Rep. John Conyers announces he will not seek reelection amid allegations of sexual harassment.

Courtesy of the New York Times:

Representative John Conyers Jr., who faces allegations that he sexually harassed former employees, announced Tuesday that he will leave Congress immediately, and he endorsed his son, John Conyers III, to replace him.

Mr. Conyers, the longest-serving current member of the House and the longest-serving African-American in history, called into a local radio show on Tuesday to announce, “I am retiring today.”

“I am in the process of putting together my retirement plans. I will have more about that very soon,” Mr. Conyers said from a hospital in Michigan.

He continued to deny that he had harassed any of his former employees and said he did not know where the allegations came from.

“My legacy can’t be compromised or diminished in any way by what we are going through now,” Mr. Conyers said. “This too shall pass. My legacy will continue through my children.”

Rep. Conyers had a long and illustrious career in Congress much of it involved in fighting for civil rights.

However there are multiple accusations, and even though Conyers is still denying them, this is undoubtedly the best decision for him to make.

In the meantime Rep. Blake Farenthold says he will pay back the $84,000 of taxpayer money that was used to settle his sexual harassment case, but has no plans to leave Congress.

And that is even after the woman he harassed went on television to say that after the settlement she was blackballed, is now able to find only part time work, and has been reduced to babysitting for extra cash.

Let's also not forget that Roy Moore has now been endorsed by both the GOP and Donald Trump, and that Trump still occupies the White House.

See anything wrong with this picture?

Democrats are always morally superior to Republicans. Republicans hate women, always have and always will.

You got the conservative line down pat 1:39. A version of both sides do it. You traitors have used it so long you can convince the low info voters with it most of the time. An easy excuse and you present no overwhelming examples to back up your lies.

Right? I for one don't have any confidence that the fruit doesn't fall far from the tree.

We had that up here with LisaM being given a job by her Daddy, a woman that couldn't pass the bar exam until the 5th time, yet was given a position of power by her father.

The Conyer's "pass" is just more proof that this country is run much like an aristocratic system. In every circumstance where a leader steps down there should be a special election, and if the child wants to run and is found to be suitable and qualified then he or she wins the office.

No more of this aristocratic handover of elected office!

I live in the suburbs of Detroit and Conyers's never seemed very honest, his wife was on the Detroit city counsel and convicted of bribery.
I don't care that he is a civil rights activist,on local news he was claiming all these accusations were racial motivated.
Playing the race card, like Clarence Thomas is disgusting.
If he didn't do anything, then prove it,but don't use the race card.

It seems that Putin has taught Trump well in how to undermine the press and democrats. Both times that Putin has met with his pupil Donald came back to America and there more downfalls for the press and Democrats. I would think that by now the media and Democrats would start watching their backs. I watched a documentary on how Putin got rid of everyone who stood in his way. They fell like nine pins. Seems to be happening in this country. And the end result is we as citizens will find we are now under the rule of a dictator. And that won't be Trump. I keep saying Putin has his bald head set to rule the world. Will know one listen?

People Conyers' age have no business planning the future for others anyway. Why isn't there an age limit on politicians? How many more presidents have to have fucking senile dementia before America wakes up?

There should be a term limit on ALL politicians - be they local or national! After all, we have it for Presidents. Why not Congress? Why not a mayor/governor/anyone?! Including the SCOTUS and other judges!

    Although he calls it "retiring".

    He's 88.

    So is my Dad.

I wouldn't vote for my Dad to be in Congress. At his age, he simply can't handle it. Conyers should have retired 8 years ago at the very least.
