The only armed sheriff’s deputy at a Florida high school where 17 people were killed took cover outside rather than charging into the building when the massacre began, the Broward County sheriff said on Thursday. The sheriff also acknowledged that his office received 23 calls related to the suspect going back a decade, including one last year that said he was collecting knives and guns, but may not have adequately followed up.
The deputy, Scot Peterson, resigned on Thursday after being suspended without pay after Sheriff Scott Israel reviewed surveillance video.
“He never went in,” Sheriff Israel said in a news conference. He said the video showed Deputy Peterson doing “nothing.”
“There are no words,” said Sheriff Israel, who described himself as “devastated, sick to my stomach.”
So roll that around in your mind a little, here was a trained law enforcement agent who panicked when the bullets started flying, and Donald Trump expects regular classroom teachers to walk into a hail of gunfire and kill an armed intruder?
By the way this is how a number of teachers responded to the idea of carrying weapons to school.
Guys, I’m a college professor.— Josh Grubbs (@JoshuaGrubbsPhD) February 21, 2018
I’ve also been shooting guns my entire life and own multiple guns now.
I don’t trust myself to be able to capably defend a classroom against a shooter, and I’m a good shot.
Why would we expect teachers everywhere to bear this responsibility?
#CNNTownHall As a teacher, I’m letting you know I’m not carrying a gun to work. I’m not bringing guns around my children. I am not a police officer or in the army for a reason, I teach kids — I don’t go to war every day. My job is to educate children.— skye l. (@skyelorenn) February 22, 2018
I’m a teacher. Don’t give me a gun. Give me the supplies I need, the salary I deserve, and the common-sense gun laws to protect my kids.— Jocelyn ✡️ (@jocelyndorf) February 20, 2018
This is idea is ridiculous and no serious person should even consider it as a solution to school shootings. And your solution is to arm teachers??? Are you fucking insane?? I'm a teacher, I teach children. I've been in the army, I've made the choice to no longer be a soldier, but a teacher!— Lucien (@LucienOldenb) February 22, 2018
Mother Jones also took a look at the NRA's idea for "hardening our schools" and they are chilling.
Some of the ideas include putting up prison yard style fencing, getting rid of trees, getting rid of parking lots (Well that will be super convenient for parents and staff.), installing thicker, heavier doors, vastly reducing the number of windows, and for the windows they do keep, making sure they are made of “ballistic protective glass.”
This is not an environment in which to learn, this is an environment in which to serve time AFTER you have killed somebody with a gun.
It is where a school shooter ends up, not the children that he wanted to target.
The deputy sounds like one of those good guys with a gun that the NRA promised would fix everything.

Trump just can’t shut up about the single idea of arming teachers. This morning he talked about there being a hundred or more teachers at a single school. And he was despicable at CPAC when he said in his growling rally mode voice: “And the teacher would have shot the hell out of him before he knew what happened.” And he once again talked about “bullets flying” in the direction of a teen shooter. He’s completely lost it.
ReplyDeleteThere has been a military-to-teacher program for several years now, and the uptake has been slow. The one positive, from what I’ve read, is that retention has been good in keeping teachers in schools who are ex-military, but not nearly as many people as expected have ever signed up and many people have dropped out of their certification training program. And as more than one long-time teacher has pointed out, the requirements for military to be certified are on the lenient side and the people often don’t have the kind of quality of knowledge and expertise in a subject that is required to be a secondary school teacher. I’m not sure what to believe yet. I do like the idea of this new career path for former military people. One site said that they need to have a bachelor’s degree, but another said they are allowed so much credit for their years of service and other experience, but are only required to have one year of a college record. Whatever the case, with Trump’s proposal I’d expect the enrollment numbers to now increase. But what of the good career teachers who will be pushed aside in order to reach Trump’s quota per school? (Quota. That word sure makes me recall all the GOP complaints about affirmative action, but I guess it’s okay when it involves promoting the military.)
Uh huh, so says the biggest coward of ALL.
DeleteWhat a convenient and sly way to continue to dumb down our kids, indoctrinate them into the military murika patriotic nra fucking bullshit.
DeleteSorry, I want my kids to be taught by people with real college training and degrees and clinical teaching experience. Not some poor schmuck who went into the military because they had no other choice in their minds at the time.
There may be a handful who can make the transition successfully.
But what constitutes experience for credit?? Shooting innocent children in our many and varied illegal wars??
Fuck no.
Maybe a good idea to give all students (K-12) hand grenades.
ReplyDeleteThis makes as much sense as arming teachers.
And Trump has been using this one person as all the proof he needs that teachers must have guns. I heard him go down to 10% of teachers today, 10-20, whereas for the past two days he was starting at 20% and saying as high as 40.
ReplyDeleteFrom a "president," no less. Easy to say when he's got Secret Service, and mafia thugs before that, to protect HIM.
DeletePut him alone outside that school and watch him go flying in. No way in HELL would he, the effing dotard.

If HE was afraid, how are school personnel expected to answer deadly force when they wouldn't have nearly the amount of professional training. When armed school employees are unable to quell an attack, the NRA and those like them will blame the victim. Sounds like a another set up to vilifying teachers.

Guns are killing high school kids across America at alarming rates
ReplyDeleteFirearms killed more 15 to 19 year olds than cancer, heart disease, and diabetes combined in 2016.

...I don’t want to speculate what was going on in his mind as he sat outside hearing those rounds fire one after another for over four minutes. I imagine he knew he was outgunned. I imagine he has a family that he was thinking that he’d never go home to if he stepped inside. I imagine he heard screaming from students that he’d watched grow up from his post.
ReplyDeleteThe fact is this trained and armed man froze. He failed to do is job and people died. The sad truth is: had he stepped inside mostly likely there would have been 18 dead that day. He was no match for that weapon. I do not condone his actions and I’m not excusing them. He knew his job and what it might entail. Every police officer and security guard in this country knows what they signed up for.

He was no match for that weapon.
DeleteI don't blame him for holding back. He was easily outgunned and likely would have been killed himself or possibly shot a student by mistake. These Rambo types that thonk they can blast in firing away are delusional.

Remember This Week: It’s the Beginning of the End of the NRA’s Reign of Terror
ReplyDeleteYes, it’s been said before, and no, it won’t happen fast. But this time it really is different. And the Parkland Kids are leading the charge.
...What these young people have is special. They are too hurt and shocked and angry to be told to calm down. They are too social-media savvy to be fazed by bots and trolls and insane conspiracy theories. They were born in the post-9/11 age and are too fearless to be made to back down by bullies like the NRA’s resident Cruella de Ville Dana Loesch and her fellow travelers on the right. And they can easily spot the BS of a president, who has to hold a palm card to remind him to care when he speaks to them about their terrifying experiences.
And what they are demanding is so rational it’s impossible to argue against it: an end to the ability of a teenager who can’t legally purchase Sudafed, rent a car or buy a beer to obtain a weapon of war, and to turn his anxiety, depression or suicidal thoughts into mass slaughter.

Just because you have a gun doesn't mean you have the intestinal fortitude to face gunfire to use it. That is what a pint or fifth of courage is for.
ReplyDeleteMost of these school shootings are done by students or former students from that school. How many teachers could gun down a CHILD who they have taught or might even currently be in their class?
DeleteWhen law enforcement officers, who go through police academies and continued formal training, kill someone on the job, their weapons are taken and an investigation takes place to determine if the shooting was justified. In any police department I know about, that officer must also pass a psychological screening to make sure that taking a human life at close range hasn't rendered them incapable of returning to duty.
And we're expecting teachers, who DON'T have that kind of training, to shoot a child they likely know well.

Four Broward County deputies did not enter the school during Parkland shooting: report
ReplyDeleteThree more armed officials have been accused of not entering Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School during last week’s mass shooting in Parkland, Florida.
CNN reported Friday that three additional deputies of the Broward County Sheriff’s Office are implicated along with the armed resource officer who was revealed earlier this week for not entering the school. Their actions reportedly shocked police from Coral Springs, who joined the sheriff’s deputies soon after they arrived.
“Some Coral Springs police were stunned and upset that the four original Broward County Sheriff’s deputies who were first on the scene did not appear to join them as they entered the school,” the report continued.

https://www.rawstory.com/2018/02/shep-smith-slams-trump-co-opting-nra-language-school-shootings-hes-parroting-lapierre-says/
Here’s Thursday's full video of Trump acting macho and like he knows it all at his roundtable with state and local officials. Through, his inattention and face making is so childish, but it’s especially so around 39 minutes in when two women, Betsy DeVos and Pam Stewart, the Florida school superintendent, talk and Trump is so impatient and keeps turning away from them and making smirky faces and even winks to someone else in the room. When the supe mentions shooting drills, he says he hates the idea because it’s so negative. He wouldn’t want Barron doing a drill. The idiot doesn’t realize that 95% of public schools hold such drills. He calls the drills “crazy.”
ReplyDeleteThen the AG of Indiana, Curtis, speaks and Trump loses it when Curtis explains how they have had an “innovation and technology” pilot program going that can control a school building in a number of ways from computers and do things to get in the way of a shooter as help is arriving. He talks about bullet-proof windows and doors and a kind of smoke bomb and other things. Trump interrupts and says two or three times that he doesn’t know what the guy is talking about, and then Curtis says I’ll tell you what I’m talking about, and does. The whole time Trump is fidgety and making faces.
Then he starts into how he wants a bunch of Gen. Kelly types in the classrooms. He calls gun-free zones “nonsense.” Funny, too, he is adamant here about how everyone will know who out of the teachers will have guns, but now, today, he’s saying that a deterrent will be that no one will know who has guns.
