I think that sometimes Bill Maher can be a little strident, and I certainly do not agree with him on all issues.
But his defense of Nancy Pelosi here is spot on.
And his call for Democrats to start showing some real balls goes right along with my thinking these last several years as well.
I always thought that our first Democratic Senator in decades, Mark Begich, could actually have won a second term if he had only acted more like Congressman for life Don Young.
I do not mean ideologically of course, but when people criticize Don Young he says "fuck you!"
And I don't mean that figuratively.
Republicans in Alaska, and most other places in the country, are arrogant assholes, and yet they keep getting reelected because the voting public takes that for confident leadership.
Alaska politicians Ted Stevens, Frank Murkowski, and Don Young were, and some still are, incredibly arrogant assholes who never apologized for ANYTHING.
If Democrats want to win elections they may not have to be actual assholes, but they do have to have the confidence of their values, and an unapologetic stand on the issues they believe in.
This upcoming blue wave may get a lot of Democrats into office, but if they want to stay there they better learn to stand defiant against bullshit attacks and attempts to paint them as wishy washy.
Sitting side by side my husband, I slapped his leg. "NAILED it!" We are independents.
ReplyDeleteI’m hoping Parkland student David Hogg runs for office in another 4-6 years. He made a powerful anti-NRA video to advertise the march coming up. He’s got the balls to make a great politician.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with Maher and have been saying much the same thing for a decade. Democrats need to stop being so polite and start taking some lessons from the Republican playbook. Stop being so afraid of offending anyone because you can’t please everyone. That way lies wishywashy inaction. Just accept the fact someone is going to be offended and move on. When you’re attacked for inane tidbits call bullshit. When you’re accused falsely call a lie a LIE, goddamit. Time to speak out and be brutally honest.
That’s one of the reasons the Republicans hate Pelosi. She’s got balls and calls them out on their bullshit.
Democrats need to be defiant and proactive. It’s all well and good to go high but you need to know how to go low and fight dirty as well.
Well, given he's a high school senior he'll need to first complete college, then run for some local offices, get his chops and then in another two decades he'll be ready for prime time. Perhaps he has other desires rather than politics?
DeleteAt any rate, he has a lot of education and living to do before he needs to make the decision.
I don’t know what the legal minimum age is in his district but he might be able to run for school board by 18. From there it’s City Council. After that it’s state legislature, then he can shoot for Federal. A few years in each position will give him the experience he needs. He can do school board and college concurrently. It won’t take him two decades to get to Congress. Not this kid. Not if that is what he wants.
DeleteI wouldn’t be surprised if more than one Parkland student decided to go into public service to really make a difference.
Yup!
ReplyDeleteBrilliant.
Well said. Especially in the wake of Conor Lamb being elected in PA. He caucuses more frequently with Republicans than he does with Democrats, so yea, it was a win for a guy with a "D" after his name, but did we really win anything?
ReplyDeleteRemember Joni Bread Bags Ernst R-Iowa? She turned on a dime once she got her foot in the door, Palin endorsed, now swamp dweller!
DeleteI don't trust any of them. Not a one, and I'll save my $$ for better causes than politics.
He “caucuses”? WTF are you talking about? Lamb has never held office or caucused with anyone.
DeleteThe guy is a Democrat. Let’s welcome another vote for Trump impeachment.
I was a registered independent for 25yrs. After this last election I decided to get off the fence and join the democratic party. Bill Maher is right on target. Stand for what you believe in. You don't have to be an asshole but you must be persistent. You cannot sway. Stand up for what you believe.
ReplyDeleteI’m not an asshole.
DeleteI’m just tired of all of it.
Jesus wants Bristol to marry a nice Muslim man. There are many.
ReplyDeleteEvery one of those electoral college folks who voted to put the idiot in the White House must accept blame for not recognizing what an unqualified, incompetent, liar, thief, Putin puppet Trump is. Time to do away with the electoral college.
ReplyDeleteBill must be a regular at Pelosi’s Hollywood fundraisers. She’s too old to lead the House in these dangerous times and she should step aside. Maybe Maher and his Hollywood pals feel “brave” when they defend her with no consequences but she is NOT the Democratic Party and she does not play in Peoria. It’s time for a new generation to take over the party. You can be a Democrat - a good one, who stands up for Democratic values - and not support politicians who have stayed around way past their sell-by date.

DeleteMaybe the best message for Democrats really would be to stop believing and listening to all the boobs on the idiot box, and start thinking for yourselves. Just a suggestion, for what it is worth.
