Donald Trump wants authority over polling booths. Is it okay to panic now?

All your polling places are belong to me.
Courtesy of the Boston Globe:

President Trump would be able to dispatch Secret Service agents to polling places nationwide during a federal election, a vast expansion of executive authority, if a provision in a Homeland Security reauthorization bill remains intact.

The rider has prompted outrage from more than a dozen top elections officials around the country, including Secretary of State William F. Galvin of Massachusetts, a Democrat, who says he is worried that it could be used to intimidate voters and said there is “no basis” for providing Trump with this new authority.

“This is worthy of a Third World country,” said Galvin in an interview. “I’m not going to tolerate people showing up to our polling places. I would not want to have federal agents showing up in largely Hispanic areas.”

“The potential for mischief here is enormous,” Galvin added.

Holy shitballs!

Apparently this bill already cleared the House, but was excised by the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and did not appear in the version of the bill they approved.

But we have to know that this is likely only the first attempt to get this through.

I take it back, Donald Trump does not simply admire Vladimir Putin.

Donald Trump wants to BE Vladimir Putin.

They can lose absentee ballots if they want to, it is called a shredder.

      Delete
    3. They "lost" a lot of absentee ballots in Florida in 2016. They didn't get sent to those requesting them and they weren't "returned" according to the registrar.

      Yeah. Right.

Some people drove through several states to get back to their Florida polling places to vote when their absentee ballots didn't arrive.

What we really need to get rid of is the paperless machines with no accountability.

@ 7:05 PM - I can't believe that a shredder would be allowed anywhere near where ballots are being counted. If you are correct then I have lost what little respect I've had for the American voting system.

As a matter of fact, it appears to the rest of the world that the whole political system seems to have gone to hell in the U.S. So many unhinged politicians voicing their hate-filled rhetoric, inciting the fearful and ignorant. There was so much promise when Obama was elected President and now it's all washed away in this Trump era.

Exactly. And when a machine breaks, they issue 'provisional ballots,' bags and bags of which were never counted in MICHIGAN-you know, the state DumbAss WON in 2016 when the GOP stopped the recount? Our system is so screwed.

      Delete
    7. Anonymous4:44 AM

Because of our age, over 65, we vote by absentee ballot in Michigan. However, more and more often, given the penchant of the GOP to cheat in elections, I wonder if our votes are even counted.

-No. Really? Do ya think? /s

" The elections officials described the proposal as “unprecedented and shocking.”

-Not the first time this Tin-pot despot wannabe has done something 'unprecedented and shocking'...and it certainly won't be the last. He'll keep pushing the envelope to see how far he can go. 'Cause that's how bullies do.

'Trump has accused Massachusetts residents of illegally casting ballots in New Hampshire as a part of a vast voter fraud scheme he believes cost him the Granite State’s electorial college votes during the 2016 general election. Hillary Clinton narrowly won New Hampshire’s four electoral college points.'

-This is part and parcel of Trumplethinskin's vindictiveness, as well as his emulation of Putin (as you mentioned, Gryphen). He never forgets a slight, no matter how slight. And he *always* has to hit back 'ten times harder'.

'Trump has also said that illegal ballots cast in other parts of the country cost him the popular vote, which he lost by nearly 3 million ballots. There has also been no evidence that nearly so many votes were cast improperly.'

-That's because he's clinically insane. Period. Full stop.

'But Trump used that accusation as a reason to launch a commission on voter fraud through which he sought personal voter information from every state. The commission dissolved in January after many states refused to comply with the federal request and amid multiple lawsuits.'

-So he's doing *this*. 'Cause Trumplethinskin's gotta have his way. Whiny ass titty baby.

C'mon Mueller, *please* hustle it up! And everyone else, VOTE! The future of our country depends on it! This is *not* hyperbole!

In 2015, a Republican that I know of here in my state was very excited when he came back from one of his good ole boy's club meeting with the rest of his Republican teammates. When he was passing out Trump stickers, I said in disbelief, "Trump?" as if I could not believe that the Republicans would sink that low, and he said, "of coarse. Why are you going to vote for crooked Hillary?" And that's when it all started.
All the one liners. Lock her up. Crooked Hillary. These things, I believe Vlad gave the good old boys so that they could chant it into the voter's minds. With the Trumpsters who are basically angry and hateful to begin with, this ploy worked well. They were even threatening to go to war if Hillary won.
Putin is denying ever having anything to do with Trump and Co. but if you really believe that then you have your' head up your' ass.
This was a plan long thought out, and Trump is a tool. That's all.

things are really fucked up at the moment, trump has committed enough crimes in his first year to be impeached, but it's congress that does that and trump is a republican. he is also doing his best to remove checks and balances-wanting to find ways around the Constitution. he also wanted the 50 states to turn over voting records. the states refused. he would have know who votes for either party. and at this time he is trying to get a better hand on the nukes-loosing restrictions. he has proven that he has no respect for the Constitution or for the people of this country. go on line to find the Constitution- that poly-sci class was a long time ago. as for a fight-we on the ground do what we can, to fight a thing who thinks he is a dictator.

It does FOR NOW. After FDR ran for a fourth term and won, an amendment was added to the Constitution limited the office of president to two terms. But what is given can be taken away. If a majority of states vote to hold a Constitutional convention the Constitution can be changed. And the Republicans are very close to controlling the number of states needed. I think they need something like 4 or 6 more. Not many. While the Democrats were busy focused on Congress the GOP was busy winning state legislatures and governorships. So it is within possibilty that that amendment can be revoked. Once can only shudder at what other amendments the GOP would tinker with or outright revoke once they open up the Constitution.

Americans already allowed a despot to seize power. They put Trump in the White House.
