March For Our Lives Anchorage students advocate for a number of solutions, which include:
- Reclassification of the AR-15 and other military pattern semi-automatic rifles as Class III, Title II under the NFA. Semi-automatic rifles are only fractionally different than fully-automatic rifles, and are just as lethal. Military grade weaponry deserves to be regulated as such.
- Reclassification of magazines over 10 rounds of ammunition as Class III, Title II under the NFA. According to a 2013 study on active shooters done by the FBI, active shooting incidents take place over a matter of minutes. Being limited to 10 rounds per magazine, as opposed to 20, 30, or 40 can save potentially dozens of lives within a mass-shooting timeframe.
- Repeal of the Dickey Amendment, a 1996 measure which effectively bans the CDC from researching preventative measures for gun violence.
- Purchase age increase to 21 years.
- Mandate for gun show and private sale background checks.
- Mandatory gun safety training accompanying first legal purchase.
All of these measures comply with the modern understanding of the 2nd Amendment, and in no way infringe on the right of Americans to bear arms. Furthermore, each one individually, and certainly all of them together, show real promise in reducing the risk posed by mass shooters.
Here in Anchorage this march will take place on the Delaney Park Strip starting at 12:00 PM.
I am hoping to get there, but unfortunately I am actually working today so I am trying to move some things around.
But if I can swing it I will see you there.
78% of americans do not own a gun. If not for the scum of the earth, Bolton, NRA, etc., this would not be an issue or cause of our deaths. It is well past time to put a stop and end to this hateful evil assault on America by hateful ugly NRA deranged criminals. It is time to arrest them, charge them and prison them. Time is up and those involved in this crime must be exposed and rounded up TODAY.
ReplyDeleteThe crime of protecting a guaranteed right in our Constitution? Lol. Seriously get a brain.
DeleteSeriously, you are allowed your musket under the second amendment.
DeleteWe are sick of the terrorist group called the NRA dictating their bastardized version of the second amendm
7.46 this has nothing to do with a right to own a gun if you are legally able to own a gun. We are talking about assault weapons in the hands of criminals. A criminal does not have the right to own a gun. Seriously your brain is fried in dung. There is no guarantee. There is no protection for ignorance. It is a done deal. Assault weapons are illegal, criminals will not own guns, and there are no protections for the NRA to continue. Its over bozo.
DeleteYou live in a fantasy world where criminals are somehow prevented from doing criminal things, while law abiding citizens are having their rights, including the right to protect themselves taken away, due to ignorant fools like yourself 9:12.
DeleteThere is no 'musket' argument 9:03 (other than in your head). The Supreme Court has already ruled against your incorrect belief.
DeleteThere are limits on the First Amendment. Why not on the Second Amendment? Yer “freedom” worth more than kids’ lives?
Delete"The first school shooting was more than 150 years ago — and changed the way courts see the Second Amendment"
ReplyDeletehttps://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2018/03/24/first-us-school-shooting-gun-debate-217704
"he decision sparked condemnation with abolitionists particularly angry. Gun control activists were horrified by the broad interpretation of the Second Amendment by the court and the jury. Legal critics argued that the interpretation “veered too far from mainstream American constitutional thought, which had always balanced the right of self-defense against other rights, such as the right to enjoy peace,” Politico explained. Under this legal interpretation, Ward’s actions weren’t about the Second Amendment but distorting the law and encouraged anarchy instead of liberty."
"All of these measures comply with the modern understanding of the 2nd Amendment, and in no way infringe on the right of Americans to bear arms."
ReplyDeleteWell that is a huge line of opinionated bullshit right there.
Well, as is your right, you made the statement. Now defend it.
DeleteHOW is it bullshit? On what do you base your opinion? What LEGAL decision BACKS your opinion? Show us the court decisions that back you up.
And DON'T just tell us the 2nd Amendment says that because the SCOTUS, in its latest 2nd Amendment decision, has already said the government retains the right of oversight and control. Also, like all of the Bill of Rights, there are limits on each one.
Do any of these measures prevent you from owning a weapon for hunting, target shooting or personal protection?
DeleteKeep in mind that I didn't say 'limit', I said 'prevent'. The Supreme Court ruled years ago that all rights can have limits imposed on them for the safety and security of our country and its people.
Of course, I'm assuming that you're not a convicted felon, domestic abuser or known terrorist.
8:23 you are i hope aware that the Florida shooter was well known to authorities, and that individuals who had the knowledge, voice and ability to have him committed by the state (ie against his will), did attempt that very thing, and were denied- and now the massacre.
DeletePeople failed (not the people who tried for sure), the robotic people in the system failed. They are ultimately responsible for this.
Mandatory gun safety training/refresher course with every subsequent weapon purchased or every five years, whichever happens more often.
DeleteNo one is taking your penis extenders away. Just ensuring the safety of the populace, which is the basic purpose of government.
Don't like it? Then you can get rid of your iron dicks.
Lol. Mlaiuppa creates a laugh with her sheer ignorance.
DeleteROFLOLPIP.
Delete12:52 opens his mouth and removes all doubt.
It works in Japan.
No one is preventing anyone from getting A gun but conditions must be met. There's nothing in the second amendment that says it has to be easy. It's already recognized that you have to demonstrate responsibility and to some extent mental competence. If you have to renew your driver's license no reason you shouldn't be required to renew your demonstration of gun owner responsibility. Just because you're competent at 21 doesn't mean you will still be at 86 when Alzheimer's has set in.
Where again in the Constitution are vehicles, vehicle rights mentioned mlaiuppa?
Delete"...the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
Everything you mention is an infringement. And this is not Japan, or any other country.
You don't get to take other peoples guaranteed rights away. Sorry, I know that is what the fascist left desires, but thankfully this country won't bow down to fascists like yourself.
It isn't 1776 and as usual you leave out the rest of the amendment, why don't you go to some gun nut site and argue your stupidity.
DeleteIt was actually 1791 8:49. Regardless it is part of your guaranteed rights and the Supreme Court has upheld the individual right to bear arms. The important portion being: "...the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
DeleteSo, that basically means you have no merit or argument other than your stupid fee fees.
No, it's not.
DeleteThe kinds of arms you can bear are ALREADY INFRINGED. Try buying or making a hand grenade, LEGALLY. Plenty of weapons must be registered. If a regulation isn't infringement then there's nothing preventing further regulation. So it's not easy. So you have to jump through more hoops. Suck it up, buttercup.
Your "free speech" is also INFRINGED. (movie theater, yelling "fire".)

DeleteThese kids will be voting in November, in 2020, in 2024.
They will be one issue voters and that issue will NOT be abortion. It will be guns.
Those weasels and toadies in the Florida legislature will be the first to go. Don't fool yourself. All of those kids took notes. They know how everyone voted. And they will be gunning for them. They will work in the campaigns of those that oppose their targets to get them elected. And when old enough, they themselves will run.

ReplyDelete...He also accused the students of arguing that anyone who disagrees with them want to kill children. According to Carlson, such ideas disqualify them from making policy decisions.
“You're definitely not fit to be making policy for the rest of us. You are by definition an extremist," Carlson said. “You should not have power if you really believe anyone who disagrees with you is evil and wants to kill the innocent.”

If extremists are unfit to make policy for the rest of us, then that means the NRA and Pro-Life extremists are unfit.
DeletePlus the Tea Party.
And by his definition the Republican Party.
And John Bolton's nomination should be shot down in flames.
Just ignore this asshole and get out the vote. We waste time on meaningless stupidity while our children are killed.
DeleteAs one Parkland, Florida, student explained, in every generation, something happens that gives them a reason to rise up. Today, students along with parents, teachers, friends and other allies are taking to the streets, not merely in the United States but all over the world.
ReplyDeleteEvery so often, there comes a point in time where many factors align in such a way that changes history. I believe this is one of those times.
Delete1. Nationally, we have reached a saturation point with mass shootings, and even those who lean right politically have finally seen enough carnage to say ENOUGH!
2. People are no longer willing to tolerate the NRA/GOP's blatant refusal to consider any effective gun reforms. We're finally willing to stand up and shout that our children's lives are more important than the right of a tiny, but loud, minority to own weapons just because they think they look scary. Both the NRA and the GOP are rapidly losing their popularity and their influence, thus their power to control Congress is being continually diminished.
3. Young people have long had a history of changing society, partly because, unlike adults, they don't have jobs or financial security to lose if they take a controversial stand. In addition, the changes they seek will have a direct impact on their lives and they are VERY personally invested in making those changes take place.
4. The young people from Parkland are a unique group because they are well-educated, politically active, and experienced in debate platforms. They come from what appears to be an affluent community that is supportive and provides them with the resources necessary for travel and media outreach.
We adults have shamefully failed this young generation, and I sincerely hope that they can accomplish what we could not, and would not, get done ourselves.

ReplyDeleteMy plans are to possible take my dog to A vet if I don't get a call back. He may possibly have Addison's. His symptoms are worsening. He had a very expensive test that wasn't even going to be read for a week because the business model of this place seems to be that all of the vets are part time. If I get today's call, this will be the THIRD vet he will have seen about this in a month.
ReplyDeleteIf he needs meds he's going to get them today. After his condition is stabilized I am going to find a practice that has vets on staff full time rather than once or twice a week.
mlaiuppa, my sweet dog was diagnosed with Addison's when she was 2 1/2 years old. I was terrified at first, but it was very manageable. Small dose of steroids daily, and a steroid injection every 7 weeks. She was very healthy and happy the rest of her life. If you don't get the diagnosis soon, when your dog starts going, he'll go fast so keep an eye on him.
DeleteI know it's manageable once it is diagnosed and medicated. The problem being it's taking a month to do that and if my dog has an "episode" he'll DIE because I won't be able to get him to the emergency care fast enough. He's 14. He'll have a heart attack because their business model sucks. Third vet in four weeks. Takes a week after every test to get the results. Not because the results are in. They're in the next day. But because the vet that is supposed to look at them and call me is only there ONCE a week.
DeleteToday I'll have to pay for a full office visit just to get test results from the third vet that has never seen my dog.
My old but otherwise healthy dog shouldn't have to die because of their cheap-ass work schedule.

This routine gun violence makes up a huge portion of America’s gun problem. In 2016 (the latest year for which data is available), there were nearly 39,000 gun deaths. More than 14,000 of those were homicides, and almost 23,000 were suicides. In contrast, the Gun Violence Archive, which defines mass shootings as those in which four or more people were injured or killed (excluding the shooter), tracked 456 mass shooting deaths that same year — about 1.2 percent of all gun deaths.
