Paul Ryan is reportedly tapping out.

Courtesy of CNN:

House Speaker Paul Ryan is not seeking re-election and will retire from Congress after this year, his office announced Wednesday.

"This morning Speaker Ryan shared with his colleagues that this will be his last year as a member of the House," Ryan aide Brendan Buck said in a statement. "He will serve out his full term, run through the tape, and then retire in January. After nearly twenty years in the House, the speaker is proud of all that has been accomplished and is ready to devote more of his time to being a husband and a father."

According to two sources with direct knowledge, in calls this morning with his leadership team, Ryan made clear much of this decision was about spending time with his family, but also noted that he planned to leave after this Congress and didn't think it was fair to his district or the GOP conference to run for re-election only to leave right after.

A source familiar told CNN that Ryan called House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy about his retirement before the news broke.

Ryan, a Wisconsin Republican, has been in Congress since 1999 and became House speaker in 2015.

This...is...huge...news.

Ryan did not want to be Speaker in the first place, but he clearly enjoyed being in politics and using his position to screw over poor people at every opportunity.

If he is throwing in the towel it is likely because he realizes that the Democrats will almost certainly be the majority in Congress after the midterms, and that his days as Speaker are over anyhow.

He might also fear the "Iron Stache," and realize that he is going to be humiliated in this next election cycle and wants to get out while the getting is good.

Can you say "Blue Wave?"

The Republican politicians are the ugliest things in our government. They use to be somewhat tolerable until somehow they let the Jerry Falwell crew take them over. Then the NRA. And that was just a big set up for the fascist to slowly move in.
Thanks Ryan for making it possible for the rich to keep getting richer. Asshole!

iNCOMING:' Ryan’s campaign pulled no punches in a statement on Wednesday afternoon. “There are many qualified conservatives who would be effective representatives for Wisconsin’s 1st Congressional District, and Paul Nehlen isn’t one of them,” said Kevin Seifert, the head of Ryan’s political operation. “His bigoted rhetoric and his reprehensible statements should disqualify him from holding any public office and we are confident voters in Southern Wisconsin feel the same way.”'

      Delete
    3. I want McConnell to be kicked out as Majority Leader before he has his heart attack. I want him to be humiliated and have to step down and hand his gavel, baton or cricket bat to Majority Democrat.

McConnell is responsible for ALL of this, since he is the one that enabled Donald Trump into the White House. He did it for his own selfish reasons, didn't care who are what he destroyed to do it and is responsible as much as anyone (and a lot more than others) for turning this county from a democracy to a fascist state.

He alone is why Gorsucks is on the Supreme Court and not Merrick Garland. That is ALL McConnell. We will be suffering for that for decades to come.

I hope Ginsberg and Kennedy stay in very good health for the next 3 years because if Donald Trump gets to nominate one more Supreme Court Justice we are all totally screwed. He's already getting to replace the most liberal judge on the 9th Circuit court of appeals. That is going to bite us in the ass too. I'm sure he's looking diligently for a suitable replacement since Satan isn't available.

Anyone want to guess another reason he is dropping out? After the raid of Cohen's files it has slipped the memory of many that Cohen was the assistant deputy of finances for the RNC. You know the crew who took Russian money through cut outs. Ryan took that cash as well and he can pretty well guess Mueller got the receipts when Cohen's office, hotel room, and home were investigated...

  17. A record breaking number of Republican seats in both House and Senate are going to be up for grabs.

The reason is obvious. They cowards are up against strong opposition and would rather quit than lose.

I'm too cynical to think they realize they have gone too far in screwing over the public and realize that backlash is due to their misguided, sadistic political positions.

They're just stepping back. They'll blame the Democrats for everything *they* did, smear, lie, (cheat, steal) until they can weasel their way back in and continue the damage.

I only hope the Democrats can stay in power long enough to reverse all of the damage and in some way arrange so that it cannot be undone when the Republicans come back into power.

I have no illusions that the VOTERS will realize how toxic their votes for Republicans were and avoid making the same mistake in the future. I'm afraid our political landscape will be this divisive partisan "team player" loyalty crap for generations to come.

I wish there was a hell so Donald Trump, Karl Rove, Dick Cheney, Paul Ryan, Mitch McConnell and all of the architects of the fall of United States Democracy could burn in it for eternity.

    “Sam’s Club Republicanism”
"he deserves to be remembered as the person who, more than anyone else, committed the Republican Party to an extreme libertarian vision of government in response to Barack Obama’s election. In doing so, he ended up achieving little of the party’s priorities — and created an opening that helped propel Trump to the White House."

08>"Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security would be largely or entirely privatized. The corporate income tax and all taxes on investment would be eliminated entirely.

The entire point of Ryan’s agenda was to dramatically reduce taxes on wealthy owners of capital and pay for it by gutting America’s most popular programs to support senior citizens and the poor. It had no obvious popular appeal outside die-hard free marketers, who make up a vanishingly small portion of the voting public.

Amazingly, the Republican Party wound up embracing this vision comprehensively."

'A Republican Congressman has let loose and expressed his true feelings about President Donald Trump to Erick Erickson, a far right wing pundit...“If we’re going to lose because of him, we might as well impeach the motherf**ker,” the unnamed Republican Congressman we’ll call “Rep. X,” supposedly said to Erickson.'
'Erickson says Rep. X continued his rant, saying, “dammit he’s taking us all down with him. We are well and truly f**ked in November... '...The House Judiciary Committee “just might pull the trigger if the President fires Mueller,” Rep. X supposedly said. “The sh*t will hit the fan if that happens and I’d vote to impeach him myself. Most of us would, I think. Hell, all the Democrats would and you only need a majority in the House. If we’re going to lose because of him, we might as well impeach the motherf**ker. Take him out with us and let Mike [Pence] take over. At least then we could sleep well at night.”

Rep. X calls Vice President Pence “competent.”'
