Courtesy of the New York Times:
Ever since Donald J. Trump began his improbable political rise, many pundits have credited his appeal among white, Christian and male voters to “economic anxiety.” Hobbled by unemployment and locked out of the recovery, those voters turned out in force to send Mr. Trump, and a message, to Washington.
Or so that narrative goes.
A study published on Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences questions that explanation, the latest to suggest that Trump voters weren’t driven by anger over the past, but rather fear of what may come. White, Christian and male voters, the study suggests, turned to Mr. Trump because they felt their status was at risk.
“It’s much more of a symbolic threat that people feel,’’ said Diana C. Mutz, the author of the study and a political science and communications professor at the University of Pennsylvania, where she directs the Institute for the Study of Citizens and Politics. “It’s not a threat to their own economic well-being; it’s a threat to their group’s dominance in our country over all.”
There have been other studies that have proven this point as well, and of course even our own powers of observation should lead us to a similar conclusion.
Trump recognized this ethnic anxiety among white Christians during his time publicly calling for President Obama to reveal his birth certificate.
And that made him a hero to these self entitled white racists.
Then all he had to do was drag Sarah Palin back onto the national stage to give him her seal of approval, and the basket of white supremacist deplorables were all set to do their thing.
Racism, and fear of "the other," has been a theme uniting these Trump supporters since the very beginning, and it is only a uniting of the more enlightened among us that will defeat them in the upcoming elections.
Everybody knew that "economic anxiety" was coded racism but I am glad that it's being called out for what it is. These stupid white Christian men (and plenty of women) always default to some economic or financial bullshit excuse when they want to disguise their racism and misogyny.
ReplyDeleteThanks for saying it out loud!!!
DeleteAnd Sarah herself was never going to get the job by vote. To those white male Christians she might have been a cute trick they'd love to bang, but only a pair of white balls was ever going to be suitable in the driver's seat.
ReplyDeleteIt goes to why no sexual misconduct on Trump's part will ever lose him the Evangelicals. Whatever he does personally, they know they can count on him for the preservation of patriarchy and the subjugation of women, which is cornerstone dogma with them.
Very true, dvlaries. Well said.
DeleteThe paranoid "white" nationalist around the world, the extreme right, the scientology world, the rapist, the haters, the angry, the NRA. "The Swamp" yep, their all In the same sinking boat together today. Everyone knows someone from this group.
ReplyDeleteThe Russian sanctions did not get lifted, trump is exposed, the basket of deplorable cabinet members have done their job. We are at the finish line and now we know who stands on what side.
Wave goodbye to the memories of past friends and family that have chosen the side of abuse, hate, evil, discourse and bullies.
Moving forward, helping kids, seeking justice, standing up, speaking up, never be silent to what happened to America and who and what did it. May they forever be punished by history.
Long since done. Civilly refused to speak to the BIL at the last wedding with a very pointed why.not attending g his kids. Done, fine, finite.
DeleteWhite people will soon be a minority and many are afraid they will end up being treated as they now treat minorities.
ReplyDeleteThen maybe a wiser path for Trump voters would have been being nicer to those who are presently in the minority in this country. I've refused to "feel sorry" for those who were mean enough or stupid enough to vote for Trump since he was first nominated. Most of these same people have voted against their economic best interests ever since racism became a barely muffled theme of the GOP.
DeleteBeaglemom
The problem began before the rigged election. The campaign to deceit Americans and those Americans that willingly jump onboard that nasty dirty platform. Our taxpayer paid servants that did not speak up and clapped for our destruction and unhealthy society. They cheer on. NEVER forget the republicans that were so heartless and cruel to our fellow americans and immigrants. The republicans who defunded education, infrastructure, security and healthcare.
DeleteThey wanted private prisons, education, healthcare to rape the masses. Don't forget the religious leaders that helped trump rig the election. Never forget and move forward with those of us that want better.
10 yrs of getting to know Sarah Palin and the cancer she spread. You betcha.
Although white people are on track to no longer be the majority, the racists have nothing to worry about.
DeleteHistorically, they’ve been on top so long that it will take awhile for white men to no longer have so much control over this country. I don’t think the loss of nearly total control will happen in my lifetime.
I’m a 31-year-old woman, and I think the white male freakouts are hilarious. One of the best memes I’ve seen suggests we take guns away from white men because they are overwhelmingly the majority of speed shooters. They lost their shit over that! Hearing them whine about prejudice against them, without irony, is sure something to witness.
They've always been a minority if you count the world and divide it into white and not-white.
DeleteThey just see their little slice of demographic getting smaller.
It's what drives the "quiverfull" to mass produce beyond the ability for earth (and their own incomes) to sustain them.
I’ve seen this attitude so many times where I live in the more rural areas of Iowa. Many of my own family members believe Christians are being persecuted, and immigrants are somehow treated better than them.
ReplyDeleteIt’s truly insane. I think this attitude comes when they see other groups gaining more equality, and therefore some of the privileges that white Christians have enjoyed their entire lives.
I’ve pointed out that giving someone else more equality does nothing to take away the privileges others already have. I’ve also asked family where are all the rich, powerful immigrants if they are such a threat. Logic doesn’t work on these people. They want to be angry and pretend to have some sort of grievance.
Oh hell, they get pissed everytime they turn on a sporting event. Black guys jump higher, Hispanic/Dominican guys hit farther, Kenyans run faster, even I that bastion of icy white-itude, a Jamaican and a Nigerian skate better. And at The.Rump's own game, a Samoan and an Indian star.
Delete9:51 AM - And don't forget to add to your list that rich, white Presidents are as smart as rocks - and they lie more often.

"Last place aversion" is a psychological phenomenon that I think applies...
ReplyDeleteat least it does to several (dumbass redneck) Republicans I personally know.
If one is running a long race and, despite doing their best, is near the back of the pack and some "judge" or some other "official" allows those behind one to move up even with that runner, then, even though he hasn't lost a THING, that runner still resents it.
Resents the HELL out of it.
His time is still the same, his "personal best" ranking stays the same, his position in the race is the same
...but he still resents the HELL out of it.
That is called "last place aversion" and explains why poor folks would vote against their own interests -- because it would benefit those "beneath" them on the socio-economic ladder.
"Sure I'm poor and ain't got doodly-squat, but at least I'm still better off than THAT guy!"
I believe that explains a LOT of Donald Trump (and other Republican) voters.
That's explained a lot back to slavery. White sharecroppers were all about their whiteness being better, even though the abolition of slavery would have allowed them to make better economic deals.

ReplyDeleteGlad people are waking up to this finally.
ReplyDeleteYeah, you know that make America great saying of theirs? I knew that it meant make America be the way it was once when Scarlett O'Hara was the queen. Never doubted that for a moment.
ReplyDeleteBut never in the history of America have the whites had outside help from other whites across the world.
So, Putin, Bannon, and whoever is in this keep the white on top of the over populating of brown people.
Hitler's mind was the same.
Wonder how they will attempt to rid this earth of us when the time comes? I am sure Putin has it all figured out.
Lol. If this is going to be the running theme for the liberals and democrats.... welcome to another 4 years of Trump.
ReplyDeleteHillary ran a totally uninspired campaign out of the Hamptons and Hollywood, and phoned it in to all the states she needed to win. A Terrible terrible campaign, one that probably only Hillary herself could lose.

DeleteFYI "“They are prominent African American supporters of President Trump. Admittedly, with the demands of modern-day identity politics, that support requires courage and conviction and for that those two should be respected.
ReplyDeleteBut we must be honest about Diamond and Silk.”
‘Conservatives across the country are raising real questions about censorship online, he continued. “However, this committee is instead holding an entire hearing about Diamond and Silk, who happen to be the type of celebrities who traffic in conspiracies, like the ridiculous #Pizzagate hoax.” “With the confidence of the intelligence community that Russia did interfere in our presidential election, and with the recent Mueller indictment of more than a dozen Russian nationals for these crimes, we know that social media platforms were being used to allow foreign citizens to attempt to influence a domestic election. It is in everyone’s interest now that we ensure that such a thing can never happen again,”
“This explains why government is paralyzed, ineffective and inefficient, and conversely, why the private sector operates far more efficiently. Our obsession with political theater has brought us to the point where now a respected and important House committee will spend several hours taking testimony from two YouTube celebrities — all done at taxpayer expense.”"
