I Love Teachers!

I do. I love teachers. And not in that sordid "Van Halen rock video" way either. (Though there is a little of that too.) I love teachers because of the important job they do and their dedication in doing it.

For the last few months I have been volunteering at one of my kids schools during recess. It started off as a lark, just something to do to use up the day. But I find myself taking great pride in my relationships with the kids and constantly impressed by the fine work that I see the teachers doing everyday. So much so that one day I felt compelled to write a poem about it.

(By the way, if you are a teacher yourself, try not to judge this too harshly. After all I am a college drop-out.)

My Teacher

My teacher taught me yesterday how to be a friend
The day before she read a book I hoped would never end.

My teacher taught me just last week that learning can be fun.
And that the closest star to us is the orb we call the sun.

My teacher helped to pick me up and wipe my tears away.
She dusted me off and kissed my head and sent me off to play.

My teacher lets me sit by her when I am feeling sad.
Sometimes she is the best friend that I have ever had.

So I woke up this morning, I quickly dressed and hurriedly cleaned my plate.
I don’t know what I will learn today but I can hardly wait.

The world is filled with wonder and there is so much I want to see.
And all this stuff that I will learn will make a better me.

One who was taught

I posted this on a corkboard someplace out of the way. I figured that if any teacher read it they might just feel a little better about their job for a few minutes or more. I have no idea if anybody read it or not as I have never tried to find out. I assume that some have read it and I hope that it accomplished its purpose.

In my life there have been several wonderful teachers. Teachers with incredible patience who saw that maybe I did have some small potential. And a high school assistant principal who, for reasons I will never quite understand, did not kick me out of school. He instead directed me toward using my energy to help the school rather then to disrupt the school.

So to my teachers, and Mr. Magstadt, I say thank you.

And to all teachers teaching today I say keep up the good work, you will make a difference.

  1. That was really nice...teachers deserve alot of thanks and respect. And good for you for helping out at the recess- you are a very brave soul...( I homeschool- so I don't think as I count as a teacher...)

( Schools here are closing left and right-options are limited-
I thought my son would go to highschool right across the street- but nope...and they laid off 600 teachers here in the beginning of the year- not good enuf....so he is stuck with me...poor thing...)

  3. thanks....you know what I mean...there is a really cool progressive highschool right across the street, that is now closing....and he doesn't want to spend hours on buses- I agree.

( He is 14- I just don't want him to be bored or fall behind...or miss out on other things- but he says it's okay...but I worry...you know how it is....)

( and I do think it is cool that you volunteer- not enough people do that...)
