The Pentagon's paranoia causes them to spy on Americans who are against the war.

A year ago, at a Quaker Meeting House in Lake Worth, Fla., a small group of activists met to plan a protest of military recruiting at local high schools. What they didn't know was that their meeting had come to the attention of the U.S. military.

A secret 400-page Defense Department document obtained by NBC News lists the Lake Worth meeting as a “threat” and one of more than 1,500 “suspicious incidents” across the country over a recent 10-month period.

“This peaceful, educationally oriented group being a threat is incredible,” says Evy Grachow, a member of the Florida group called The Truth Project.

“This is incredible,” adds group member Rich Hersh. “It's an example of paranoia by our government,” he says. “We're not doing anything illegal.”

We seem to be slipping further and further into this Vietnam era time warp, where our government becomes more and more suspicious of the anti-war movement and less and less forthcoming concerning the war that it is fighting. I swear I almost expect to see long haired college kids in bellbottom pants and paisley ties standing on the street corner holding "Make Love not War" signs. That would be so cool!

But come on! A meeting of the Quakers is labeled a threat? How paranoid do you have to be to be frightened by one of the most non-violent religions on the planet. So much for religious tolerance in this country.

How can we preach freedom to other counties and then try so hard to suppress free speech in this country? How deep is our hypocrisy?

Here is an idea. Maybe if the Pentagon were to take some of the resources that they are currently using to spy on their fellow Americans, and instead were to take the money and man power and go to look for Bin Laden they might actually find his skinny ass!
