IRAN'S largest selling newspaper announced today it was holding a contest on cartoons of the Holocaust in response to the publishing in European papers of caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed.
"It will be an international cartoon contest about the Holocaust," said Farid Mortazavi, the graphics editor for Hamshahri newspaper - which is published by Teheran's conservative municipality.
He said the plan was to turn the tables on the assertion that newspapers can print offensive material in the name of freedom of expression.
Now obviously I find this offensive, but that really is the point isn't it?
In my opinion this is the approprite response to the cartoons in the danish paper showing the prophet Mohammad.
It is non-violent. And it is using he same medium to make their point about insensitivity. I much prefer this response to the violent outbursts that are breaking out all over the Muslim world.
I have to say "Well played Iran. Well played."
The cartoons are not the problem...they are a symptom of the problem. The problem is that both sides are spoiling for a fight.
