Most American taxpayers would get $100 rebate checks to offset the pain of higher pump prices for gasoline, under an amendment Senate Republicans hope to bring to a vote Thursday.
However, the GOP energy package may face tough sledding because it also includes a controversial proposal to open part of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska to oil exploration, which most Democrats and some moderate Republicans oppose.
The GOP hard-on for drilling in ANWR is blinding them to the fact that it will take a decade before we see the first barrel ready to ship to a refinery. In ten years we will either have an alternative energy source or we will be riding horse drawn buggies to and from the local Wal-mart.
The fact that the Republicans can not come up with any other answer for our out of control gas prices then to poke giant holes in my pristine backyard is really an indictment of their lack of foresight and imagination. If we drilled all over ANWR tomorrow it would not make the slightest difference in our oil or gas prices, even after twenty years.
It would however bring hundreds of millions of dollars back into my state and we could pave our streets with gold. Thank you! If I were a selfish prick I would just say "Screw all of you" and support my Senators aching desire to turn our local tundra into swiss cheese. As a matter of fact the recent high oil prices will be reflected in my annual PFD (Permanent Fund Dividend) that I receive every year for living in a state lucky enough to be sitting on a buttload of decomposing dinosaurs. Thank you for that too!
But that is not who I am. I want what is best for all of us in the long run and not what is best for me in the short run.
Oil had a long and polluted run, but it is time to go elsewhere for our energy needs. How about Hydrogen? We have lots of water too!
