Bush caves! Gitmo detainees to get Geneva Convention rights!

The Bush administration said Tuesday that all detainees held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and in U.S. military custody everywhere are entitled to protections under the Geneva Conventions.

White House spokesman Tony Snow said the policy, outlined in a new Defense Department memo, reflects the recent 5-3 Supreme Court decision blocking military tribunals set up by President Bush. That decision struck down the tribunals because they did not obey international law and had not been authorized by Congress.

This is a huge victory for those of us who believe America has squandered its moral relevancy in the world with this criminal behavior toward these prisoners.

We have a long way to go, but this is definitely a step in the right direction.

I am impressed that the Supreme Court did the right thing here. I certainly hope that they maintain this level of integrity when dealing with future challenges to the "Bush Doctrine" and other decisions by this administration.

This cannot be seen as anything except an indictment on how Bush and his cronies have conducted this war and treated these prisoners. This is more then just a slap on the wrist and it might do much to rein in this out of control government.
