Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton hit back Friday at a Pentagon aide who charged that her questions about Iraq withdrawal planning have the effect of helping the enemy _ calling the accusation a spurious dodge of a serious issue.
Clinton, the Democratic front-runner for president, had asked the Pentagon to detail how it is planning for the eventual withdrawal of U.S. military forces from Iraq. She first raised the issue in May, pointing out that whenever troops leave, it will be no simple task to transport the people, equipment and vehicles out of Iraq, possibly through hostile territory.
Eric Edelman, the Defense Department's undersecretary for policy, offered a sharply worded response, saying such discussions boost the enemy.
"Premature and public discussion of the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq reinforces enemy propaganda that the United States will abandon its allies in Iraq, much as we are perceived to have done in Vietnam, Lebanon and Somalia," Edelman wrote.
So she mails this question in May, does not get a response for two months, and then when she does is accused of aiding the enemy by asking a question that nobody will ever see unless it is made public. Which the Clinton campaign then makes public to demonstrate that the Bush administration considers her to be a danger to the wars progress.
Does any of this ring true to you?
Here is my theory, based on not one scintilla of evidence. I think that there is a deal in the works. I think that the Bush administration is identifying Hillary as the real Democratic threat to the Republican nominees and the Bush administrations plans. In exchange I believe that Hillary, with Bill's help, has agreed to not pursue legal actions against Bush when she takes over the Presidency.
We all know that Bill and the senior George Bush got all chummy during the Tsunami Relief fund raising. It would have been the easiest thing in the world to gain the elder Bush's confidence and put a bug in his ear about solving a problem that George senior was certainly already concerned about. And that was how to keep his boy out of prison, or to have to suffer the embarrassment of being questioned by the Democrats who he must have known were scheduled to take power in the next election.
So in exchange for promising to let George W. off easy, the Republican machine identifies Hillary as the enemy number one of the Bush administration which the whole country has turned against. She then gains tons of support, even though she has voted to support this war every time she was given the opportunity, except the last vote in which her Democratic rivals forced her to make a public demonstration of her anti-war creds.
In short we are being manipulated again. If Hillary is elected you watch and see if I was not right on the money.
And you know the saddest thing for me as that it already tricked Keith Olbermann, who devoted yesterdays "Special Comments" to this bullshit. Come on Keith, you are sharper then that!
