Anchorage continues to dig out from a snowfall that set a record for the day and the month. The National Weather Service says 17.2 inches fell at its office just south of Anchorage's international airport and 22 inches fell in northeast Anchorage on Friday and Saturday.
The heaviest snow fell between 3 and 6 p.m. Friday at a rate of almost two inches per hour.
The monthly total at the weather service office is now 29.7 inches, breaking a record from 1963 when 27.6 inches fell during April.
The 15.5 inches that fell Friday is the third-most for any one day in Anchorage. The record is the 25.7 inches that fell six years ago on March 17, 2002.
Holy shit! That was a butt load of snow!
That was the most snow I shoveled all year long. We lost our electricity twice and there were accidents and stuck cars all over town.
But the thing that I cannot get over is that this happened on April 25th and 26th. This supposed to be our spring!
I mean sure we always get a little last minute snow to remind us that we are in Alaska, but this was literally like going back in time to January or February.
Does anybody want to argue about climate change with an Alaskan? Because trust me we are ready with plenty of anecdotal evidence to make our case.
holy crap...wow...and here I have been whining...( we are supposed to get more snow tomorrow)...
ReplyDeleteHang in there..stay warm...
Spring will come .....one day....
It already came...twice!
ReplyDeleteAnd then it went away...twice.
I remember snow in Spokane WA in May, well after everyone had drained the snow blowers & removed their snow tires & stored snow shovels & packed up their winter clothes. It is a mess anytime, but especially when you aren't prepared for it. If our southwind keeps blowing here, it'll reach you soon & help you thaw out.
