John McCain distanced himself Monday from a top adviser who said another terrorist attack on U.S. soil this election year would benefit the Republican presidential candidate. Barack Obama's campaign called the comment a "complete disgrace."
Charlie Black, an adviser already in the spotlight for his past lobbying work, is quoted in the upcoming July 7 edition of Fortune magazine as saying such an attack "certainly would be a big advantage to him." Black said Monday he regretted the comment.
Black is also quoted as saying the "unfortunate event" of the assassination of former Pakistani prime minister Benazir Bhutto in December 2007 "helped us."
Anybody who has been paying attention to how the Bush administration used the 9-11 attack to ram their agenda down the throats of frightened Americans, and how they conveniently had terror alerts to divert the media's attention away from one of their numerous scandals, cannot help but know that Republicans view terrorists as political allies during election time.
So hearing Charlie Black say this out loud is only surprising in the fact that this belief is never supposed to be said to those not in the inner circle. So McCain comes out to refute Black's statements, which I have no doubt will be followed by a trip to the woodshed where Mr. Black will be firmly reminded that there are somethings that must be kept on the downlow, and everything is fine. Nothing to see here folks just move along.
So remember boys and girls, if there is indeed an attack we know who is behind it because they already accidentally showed their hand.
