Did tonights debate damage the McCain/Palin ticket? No. Did it help? God help us it might have.

She winked. She flashed her super bleachy smile. She sported "facts don't bother me" bangs. And she disappointed millions of Americans by not saying anything too stupid.

Did she lose? Not entirely.

Did she win? Hell no!

Joe Biden was smart, well spoken, dapper, and boring as hell.

Did he lose? No. Did he win? Yeah but who did not expect that?

Things I learned:

Sarah Palin, unlike every other politician, does not have to respect or answer the questions posed by the moderator.

Sarah Palin will not be allowing the filter of the MSM to keep her from connecting the American people anymore. (Take that Katie Couric!)

Sarah Palin did not know what the hell she was talking about, even though she delivered her prepared answers with a high school debater's level of competence. The Republican base will eat it up with a spoon.

All in all, Sarah Palin ruined my night by not crashing and burning. And I will simply NEVER forgive her for that.

Snarky comment of the night: So at the end of the debate Palin trotted her whole dysfunctional family up on stage, with the noticeable exception of son Track, who is in the military now, little Piper, and Bristol.

Why no Bristol? She should only be about six months pregnant about now. And since she is so motherly toward little Trig, why not have her help with him to foster her maternal instincts before she gives birth to her own little hillbilly? I just can't help wondering why she was absent. It is one of those things that makes me go hmmmm.

Does she ever answer any questions?

Exactly why would she need any more power as the Vice Prez? She can't even explain why she should be Vice Prez!

She struck me as spitting back as many things as she could memorize, whether related to the question or not. I would nominate her to be a Stepford wife, not VP.

I guess Track is in Iraq coming down from his drug addiction from mainlining oxy-contin. The McCain campaign has Bristol in a Guantanamo of sorts, she must really be protruding with that "pregnancy" by now. Wonder who is breast feeding the little special needs guy, Trig, it sure isn't Sarah. God forbid she might get a little milk spot on her designer suit. The doctor who delivered Trig has completely disappeared from view, www.palindeception.com. Oh, did I mention that Sarah forgot to mention that while she gave all those tax cuts to people in Wasilla, she also left Wasilla $22 MILLION dollars in debt. I could go on and on.

Little Piper was there -- Palin handed Trig off to her on stage!!

What a nightmare - Palin represents the total fakery of our political system. Her lack of education and intelligence is totally shocking. Even more disturbing is her total lack of empathy as seen during Biden's discussions about war and genocide and his own personal tragedy - Sarah is clearly smirking through all of that. Really disturbing and really off the chart. She's just totally ignorant & too old to be cute & sadistic to the core. What kind of religion does she practice again? After all of this, hopefully, Alaska gives her the boot. Good people deserve better than this national disgrace.

I'm curious as to why you think Biden was boring? I didn't find him boring at all. He was forceful & gave the facts; even stuck in a couple of one-liners (bridge to nowhere).

I think Palin came off as a vapid, spelling-bee reciting annoying marketing corporate person. I was completely irritated throughout.

    MAJOR PALIN FAIL.

  6. I agree with Helen.

Palin exceeded extraordinarily low expectations. Joe was thoroughly a professional, and also very personable. He presented many facts in an organized and understandable way, without any gaffes.

I was watching it on CNN, with that little "independent opinion ticker" at the bottom. Biden scored high most of the time he was speaking. He got better scores over time, which is always a good sign for a speaker. In contrast, after the first third of the debate, Palin flatlined.

The independents KNEW she was lying. They KNEW she wasn't answering the questions. They KNEW she was sticking to the talking points on her little notecard, with no regard for her opponent, the audience, or the American voter.

And I think the results (CBS poll) are already in - Biden took it. His win over Palin was greater among Independents that Obama's win over McCain with independents.

McCain needed a game changer and he didn't get it.

I'm (not really) sorry to say this on the behalf of you and the thousands of other reasonable people in your state, but she's headed back your way, the morning of November 5.

I really hope you guys boot her ass out with the next election and she gets a receptionist position at some BP outpost.

  7. P.S. I also agree that Biden was not at all boring. He was almost always succinct, first calling Palin out on her MANY lies, then giving the truth. All within the time allotted.

    Thank you Jackie!!!

You took the words right outa my keyboard. Glad to see someone else saw past the bullshit. And what bullshit it is!!!

I cheered at some of Biden's comments. I didn't do that at the 1st Obama debate. Biden slew that idiot, he countered her at every turn AND managed to add some well-placed zingers. Not sure why everyone didn't see that?

Perhaps too much focus on Palin?

  10. I did not see Piper on stage. But I did see her come of the plane and then saw Sarah hand Trig to her , who she held like a stack of firewood. I did not see Bristol on the tarmac however.

Yeah Helen I just think that Joe could have been a little less wooden. I think he did great, but Palin looked all bright and shiny and he came off dull and aged. That is just a very shallow observation. You know like the Republicans will make.

But I agree with you and Jackie that Sarah did not perform well in answering the questions. The problem is that for some of our less educated voters that will not make a bit of difference.

She flirted with, and seduced, the horny neocon males and and made the trailer park females wish they could afford her "awesome" outfits and cool designer glasses.

For that group she may as well have answered every question brilliantly.

Wow, Gryphen. I'm so amazed at how differently you see people than I do. Biden, while older, was so passionate and on-message. That's the opposite of "wooden" to me. Palin came off as more wooden: Rigid, unmoving, insisting she do her infomercial rather than answering the actual fucking questions.

I guess we just see stuff differently.

I really was impressed by Biden. He actually got choked up about his kid in Iraq... without saying it, so NOT wooden. He also was passionate about defending his position.

I am wondering if peeps saying he was boring saw the same debate as me? Am I too intellectual? Or what? because he made me cheer, he said such great (and sane) things... and countered the nutstuff Sarah at every turn.

What debate were you watching, Gryphen??

I thought Biden kicked butt. Best debate I've seen him do. Sarah may not have gone up in flames tonight, but as soon as everyone reruns the tape, and filters out the blizzard of words, she's not going to fare well. She wants more power than Cheney?? She got the General in Afghanistan confused with Bush's press secretary. She WINKED....more than once! And the batting eyes, and scrunching nose lost her points with many women, guaranteed. She was reading little memorized stump speeches, and not even caring if the one she read answered the question. She just picked the closest one.

Biden was brilliant. A statesman with a lot of heart, and experience up agains some Jr. High pep squad girl. No contest.

    Just my 4 cents! :)

  13. I thought Biden was great also. He stuck to the message, got in some good jabs, looked at the camera and at Palin, and the last 20 minutes of the debate were his best. The moment he choked when talking about wondering if his child would make it is sure to resonate with some. That was genuine. He had a great closing statement as well.
Palin did better than I hoped but still came off looking and sounding like Miss Sharon from Romper Room. I predict she will get a slight bounce in the polls but then fall again. I'm also thinking Obama/Biden will win with a large enough margin to prevent another theft.

Take it easy, Gryphen...Sarah has been in debate camp for a week, and came in with very rehearsed answers in the form of variations of her stump speeches which she used no matter what the question was. She basically delivered a stop loss to McCain, at least ensuring that his "base" of white trailer trash Sams club republicans and religious nut jobs will still vote for him. She proved one important thing to these voters, that she is still one of them, and has enough "book learnin'" to be on the ticket.

The rest of America still believes she is a train wreck, albeit one who can regurgitate fed lines wihtout any regard to what they actually mean.

Very astute observation regarding Trig...she handles him like a sack of potatoes. Bristol has been MIA since the convention, and I was going to ask you if you had heard anthing about her in Alsaka lately.

  15. I think that the difference in our interpretations may be as simple as simple gender bias.

As women you all were not seduced or impressed by Palin's beauty contestant flirtations. But if you saw Pat Buchanon last night, or if you watch the male pundits this morning, you are going to see that they were far more impressed with Sarah Palin then you might imagine.

I agree that if we judge this thing on substance or gravitas then Joe Biden OWNED Sarah Palin last night.

But she was able to alter the perception that America was getting of her, mostly based on those Katie Couric interviews, by simply refusing to cooperate and by making every horny guy out in the audience think he was gong to get lucky if he chose her as his Vice President.

Ultimately this debate is going to change NOTHING. But it did stop Palin from being a drag on the McCain/Palin ticket. When I say Joe Biden was wooden, what I meant was that he was holding back because he was essentially on stage with a kitten. The Joe Biden bulldog could not savage the adorable kitten on stage like he would have ANY other candidate he might have faced.

You may disagree with my assessment, but you watch how this gets spun today and see if I am not right.

And thanks for your input, you all made great points and I agree with everything so say for the most part. I just think there was something my "Y" chromosome saw that perhaps the smart female contingent was not tuned in to.

Absolutely agree with you on that one..those little winks and retarded folksy sayings are just another SNL skit in the making...they should thank the McCain campaing for providing them with the free comedy gold.

Pat Buchanan had the same look that Hannity did when he interviewed Palin...I swear I thought he was going to jump her bones right there on the chair.

Gryphen: Well said & thanks so much for clarifying your point of view for me. I see what you are saying. I guess women may view her from a much different angle than men.

I find the objectification of her by Buchanan just sickening, btw.

In any case, I agree with the other commenter's takes, pretty much spot on. I am blogging about my take on it today, and I think as the transcripts & sound bytes emerged, any thought that she did well will dissolve. I'm actually re-reading the transcript right now & shaking my head in disbelief. I mean no one talks like that! It's gibberish mostly. She got in some memorized facts but when not spouting those, holy crap. What a train wreck.

The new thing is that she had an earpiece in her ear with the wire attached to her glasses....I would not doubt this considering the Republicans once did this with Bush...There is a pic showing this from a still from Cnn.

Othern than that I hated how she said she would not answer the questions from Biden nor the modorator if she chooses to instead talk to the American people (Something like that) She was trying top be like a everyday person while Biden in my opion was the best debate porfomance I have ever seen. He was in touch with the people plus he backed up his talk with facts...The guy is smart!!

She said that again in an interview on Fox today!! That Couric was wrong for not letting Sarah talk to the AMerican People like she wants to, instead of being asked questions.

Sarah IS a maverick after all! She wants to change the entire way journalism works, by not answering any questions and/or coming up with the questions herself!

    Who does THAT sound like?

    LOL!!

Can't wait to see the wire pic.
