They are trying to disenfranchise my daughter!

My 21 year old daughter called me last night.

She lives in Georgia and found out that there is a problem with her voter registration.

Apparently they called into question whether she was actually a resident of Cobb county, where she is registered to vote. My daughter sent them back a packet of information, including a copy of her drivers license (issued in Cobb county) and a copy of a bill she received at that address, to prove that she lives there.

But she said that right now her situation is still unresolved.

I told her not to give up and to make sure they let her vote. I told her that this is her right as a citizen and that NOBODY has the right to take it from her.

By the time I got off of the phone with her I know she was fired up and ready to vote.

I cannot fathom how Republicans can allow this kind of garbage to happen in their name. I know that most Republicans are good, hard working, fair minded people, who cannot possibly embrace these kind of tactics. But they need to stand up and tell their officials to KNOCK THIS SHIT OFF!

Personally I am not somebody who would EVER consider cheating to win at anything! If I cannot win fairly then in my opinion I simply do not deserve to win. I cannot believe that I am in the minority with that point of view.

But I have news for the assholes trying to keep my little girl from voting. She WILL vote, you can bet the farm on that! I know that kid and she will not allow anybody to take this away from her. I have never seen her as excited about participating in anything as she is about casting this first vote.

But I understand why you fear her. Because she, and millions of other young Americans, are about to turn this election year on its head. And there is NOTHING you can do to stop them!

And as for me? Well I was going to wait until November 4th to cast my vote, but not anymore. Today I will go and vote. I will vote so goddamn hard that the voting booth will need a cigarette and a nap when I am finished!

And my advice to EVERYBODY who wants to participate in this historic election, is to get out just as soon as you can and vote to take this country back from the kind of people who believe that winning is everything and that the only valid point of view is their point of view, and that nobody else deserves the same rights that they demand for themselves.

We are ALL REAL Americans, and ALL of us have the right to choose the next President of these United States.

  1. I lived in Georgia for a few years and I could easily see *some* of the officials pulling BS like that. GRRR!

  2. I read on Huffington the other day, in W. Virginia voting machines were flipping votes from Obama to McCain - but no follow up on the story yet. The 3 districts it was happening in - were run by Republicans.

Lots of places are starting to have trouble.

Tell your daughter we are all behind her and sending our support!

If the Republicans steal the election again this time, I swear I will scream so loud you'll hear me in Alaska.

  3. The right across the country are trying to keep people from voting! They were just stopped in Ohio by the legal system! They are going to try everything! They are going to steal this one too unless we have a landslide and that is what they are trying to prevent!

  4. Yeah the Supreme Court had to step up and do the right thing here..

About your daughter...tell her to ask for a Provisional Ballot and also to take ALL ID with her when she goes to vote- it would also be good if she votes EARLY , so that she can take ALL data with her when she goes to vote, take Utility Bill , SS Card, Any communication she has from Board of Elections with her name on it, and ID should be a Photo ID....When she votes, tell her to document it- take video and photos...I am encouraging everyone to do that..

I wish her the best- I hope she can vote....and yes, that her vote is Counted..

  6. I have been reading your blog for sometime and have never left a comment before.

I live in Georgia and I am hearing more and more each day about problems that is happening. I am going to give you very good website that has some great people in the area your daughter lives that will be able to support her. They even have lawyers available. The site is Blog for Democracy at http://www.blogfordemocracy.org/

Hope this might help. We just need to make certain she votes and it counts.

I would think that someone in the Obama campaign could help her as well.

In my country (Sweden) voting is a right (for all from 1920). Voting is pretty automatic.

A few weeks before the election (always on the 2nd Sunday in September) we receive our voting cards in the mail (snail mail). Those that want to, may vote by post a couple of weeks before. If you change your mind ultimately, you will go to your regular voting place on the day, to cast your vote again. This does, however, mean that it takes a couple of weeks to get the results (not like in India ;=)

The percentage generally is in the 80%s. Where I live (as in most suburbs where immigrants live) it’s pretty low, in the 60%s. We have a problem with that…
