Barack Obama's grandmother, whose personality and bearing shaped much of the life of the Democratic presidential contender, has died, Obama announced Monday, one day before the election. Madelyn Payne Dunham was 86. Obama announced the news from the campaign trail in Charlotte, N.C. The joint statement with his sister Maya Soetoro-Ng said Dunham died peacefully late Sunday night after a battle with cancer.
They said: "She was the cornerstone of our family, and a woman of extraordinary accomplishment, strength, and humility. She was the person who encouraged and allowed us to take chances."
Obama learned of her death Monday morning while he was campaigning in Jacksonville, Fla. He planned to go ahead with campaign appearances. The family said a private ceremony would be held later.
I am so sorry for Obama and his whole family right now.
It is a terrible shame that she did not live long enough to see her grandson become the next President of these United States.
And I would just like to take a moment to say f**k you to the conservative pundits who claimed that Obama's grandmother was not really sick. You scumbags are the worst kind of Republicans and you owe Obama an apology.
I was furious when I heard about some people saying Obama went to Hawaii to "fix" his birth certificate instead of seeing his gravely ill grandmother. You know, if Palin had announced that she had a gravely ill loved one and needed to go home, I would have even given her the benefit of the doubt and I don't like her at all!
