Backed into a corner Governor Palin finally addresses the crisis in Emmonak and other villages in the region.

Of course the first order of business for the Governor is to deny any culpibility.

As she released her state energy plan Friday, Gov. Sarah Palin defended criticism of her team's response to the economic crunch being described by people who live in the region.

"We want to make sure, of course, that no individual is hungry out there. And that nobody is cold out there," she said. "And we want to know if the community itself -- if anything fell between the cracks, between (the power-cost equalization subsidy program), energy rebate checks that were sent to each individual."

Palin said she's looking into a trip to Emmonak, which is one of roughly a dozen Y-K villages that make up the Wade Hampton Census area.

Nick Tucker's letter was printed in the Bristol Bay times on Monday, CC spoke out about it on her radio program "Cutting Edge" on Tuesday, I wrote my first post on this crisis at 6:42 a.m. on Wednesday, by the time we reached noon of the same day almost EVERY progressive blogger in Alaska had weighed in on the topic, and contributions started rolling in almost immediately following my post and increased throughout the day.

And earlier today Dennis Zaki left to go to Emmonak to film the situation facing the villagers for broadcast on various news outlets. By the way his trip was paid for with money raised by Alaska bloggers in less then THREE hours!

So all of this happened in a two day span of time. And our Governor? Well she is "looking into a trip to Emmonak". That is the difference between WANTING to do something and HAVING to do something.

Are you impressed with her response? Neither are the native regional leaders.

Though the underlying problems go back for generations, the picture of suffering villagers poses a tough political problem for Gov. Palin. Some regional leaders are already saying her administration has been slow to respond to a problem that has been brewing since the end of fishing season.

"Gov. Palin was out on the campaign trail, so why would she have given a damn? She was trying to get elected," said Naneng, the AVCP president.

Governor Palin can try to change the facts and spin her web of deception, but we know the truth this time don't we?

The governor has her priorities, and this doesn't seem to be one of them. If she cared about the people of the Delta, she would have prepared for this eventuality back in the fall when everyone predicted it.

    She's not good for Alaskans.

Apparently (I was just over at the Oasis) she's packing to fly outside to appear on some talking head's show. Maybe she'll provide commentary for the inauguration since she wasn't invited!

Her staff will handle the real work.

  3. They're already trying to put a spin on it! From you previous post:

Palin has been very engaged in mobilizing staff and has orchestrated the response, Jollie said. “It’s a priority for her,” she said. “She’s been asking for updates and information, all week as matter of fact.”

    Really???

  5. There are alot of things Sarah Palin could be doing - rather then just talking...

Palin belongs to a large church group in Alasaka, she could ask them to pitch in with food and donations - she could speak to or send a representative to speak to folks in washington - she could talk with your senators who are already there - and she already knows the power of the web - one post or web appearance by her on one or more conservative web sites could also get the word out - letting folks know that immediate help is needed, and that she will continue to work on legistration and government help as well but that takes time

There is no excuse for her lack of action and total lack of compassion.

The background to all this, that she was out on the campaign trail promoting herself rather then working to protect the citizens of Alaska has to be remembered when she runs for re-election - she has proven she only cares about herself and will not be devoting her time and energy to the state.

The reason I did not post about it because I did not want to take away from the problems they were having by having people here go into attack mode on me. I only posted this time because of what I saw in one of the messages. I respect of this blog he has shown class and restraint and not afraid of different viewpoints, he is a true rarity from the left, a number of people can learn a lot from him.

Notalib: oh gosh darn it, your so like The white witch! White witch/aka gov. grifter has done nothing in spite of Dud, her husband and children being of Native ancestry! She cares only about her self and IMO narcissist personalty disorder. I am not a dr. but plenty drs have weighed in on this.
She will go on Glen Beck, Grandstanding how the awful anonymous bloggers have done it again when the truth of the matter Trooper Monegan brought this up in oct. She did nothing. Alaska (certain parts, just like US are not patriotic) in her words. She is racist, not Christian, a liar in the "christian" aspect b/c christians I know want to help, and just good people want to help. She is a Big boil on the A$$ of alaska, get rid of her...!!!!

  12. Actually Monegan brought up the topic in July 2008 in his farewell (after being fired by Palin) letter, warning Palin that this storm was a'brewing.

So it's not like Palin didn't have time to act; she had a month or so to do something before getting all busy with McCain and the national election.

But just like when she didn't fill the Rural Advisor position in October when that person quit; she did nothing.

Now, it's "OMG, we have to evaluate this! We didn't know! Do they want me to go out there and shake hands, pose for pictures?"

AVCP Inc did/do not do much about their communities, until it gets coverage. The issue in Emmonak is a couple of years old and of course applies equally to the other rural communities, Yukon especially.

It is interesting that individuals in the AVCP/YKHC villages are finally getting recognized for their own efforts to raise awareness and to get support for their own efforts.
