Most Americans want the Bush administration investigated for the use of torture and using the Justice Department for political purposes.

Even as Americans struggle with two wars and an economy in tatters, a USA TODAY/Gallup Poll finds majorities in favor of investigating some of the thorniest unfinished business from the Bush administration: Whether its tactics in the "war on terror" broke the law.

Close to two-thirds of those surveyed said there should be investigations into allegations that the Bush team used torture to interrogate terrorism suspects and its program of wiretapping U.S. citizens without getting warrants. Almost four in 10 favor criminal investigations and about a quarter want investigations without criminal charges. One-third said they want nothing to be done.

Even more people want action on alleged attempts by the Bush team to use the Justice Department for political purposes. Four in 10 favored a criminal probe, three in 10 an independent panel, and 25% neither.

The ACLU and other groups are pressing for inquiries into whether the Bush administration violated U.S. and international bans on torture and the constitutional right to privacy. House Judiciary Chairman John Conyers and his Senate counterpart, Patrick Leahy, have proposed commissions to investigate.

I have said it before, and I will never stop saying, that the Bush administration MUST be investigated thoroughly for their criminal activity!

The American people are owed the truth about what really transpired behind closed doors which hid from view the actions and policies fomented by Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Alberto Gonzales, Paul Wolfowitz, George Tenet, Condoleezza Rice, and George W. Bush.

How many lies were told to the citizens of this country? How many people were really tortured on our behalf? Who were the wiretaps truly directed against, and how much information did they gather? What is the truth about what happened on 9-11? And how did that get perverted into permitting us to invade Iraq? And there are so many more questions that I cannot possibly list them all here.

We simply cannot move forward until most, if not all, of these question are answered. Nor should we.

In addition to the fact that we owe ourselves and the world the honest truth about what happened, it is imperative that the Republicans be held accountable for their actions.
From Nixon, to Regan to Bush sr. and now Jr. they have abused the power of the presidency and broken laws and had No consequences.
If we allow them to get away with these behaviors, they will continue.
Jr. was a great example of power abused.

Holding these people to account can't happen soon enough.

If only Tony Blair could be included! He was GW's lapdog and has to answer for his actions as well.

  3. 100% agree! President Obama doesn't have to directly be involved ( I understand the "politics" involved and the tremendous amount of legistration he is going to want to get passed to help our country so he doesn't want to directly anger the repulicans any more than he needs to) - by he can just simply allow and support the legal process to unfold.
