Sarah's resignation comes too late to save 200 lives lost due to negligence by the state of Alaska.

State programs intended to help disabled and elderly Alaskans with daily life -- taking a bath, eating dinner, getting to the bathroom -- are so poorly managed, the state cannot assure the health and well-being of the people they are supposed to serve, a new federal review found.

The situation is so bad the federal government has forbidden the state to sign up new people until the state makes necessary improvements.

No other state in the nation is under such a moratorium, according to a spokeswoman for the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

In the meantime, frail and vulnerable Alaskans who desperately need the help are struggling. One elderly woman is stuck in a nursing home, for lack of care at home. Another woman, suffering from chronic pain and fatigue, said she's so weak, she often can't even pop dinner into the microwave.

A particularly alarming finding concerns deaths of adults in the programs. In one 2 1/2 year stretch, 227 adults already getting services died while waiting for a nurse to reassess their needs. Another 27 died waiting for their initial assessment, to see if they qualified for help.

This kind of negligence by our state government is inexcusable, but understandable when you consider the fact that our Governor tried to run the state via two blackberries while she was focused on becoming VP of our entire country.

(Just let that cold chill finish running through your body before you read on.)

The facts are that Sarah Palin can talk about her compassion and her religion all she wants but we have seen how she treats our indigenous people, how she slashed funding for special needs children before she realized how politically advantageous it was to use Trig as their mascot, and now how she has abandoned some of the our most fragile citizens during the most frightening time of their lives.

Some may want to give Palin a pass on this but they absolutely SHOULD NOT! She is the executive of our state, the fault for this falls directly on her shoulders and she has said and done nothing to protect these poor people. And why not? Because nobody brought it up as a political talking pint that's why!

Running a state requires more than just chasing the television cameras and keeping your name in the papers. It means doing things that may not gain a lot of notice but have a positive impact on the people who elected you to office. But no our Governor cannot be bothered with silly inconsequential things like doing her job.

Instead she spends her time twittering nonsense like this:

Ethics issue would almost be funny if it weren't such an abuse of justice. AKns deserve our public resources be used wisely, not frivolously

For one of the few times I can remember I find myself in total agreement with the Governor. You are absolutely right Sarah, Alaskans DO deserve to have our public resources used wisely and NOT frivolously! And I certainly hope that your successor will finally do just that!

Let's see... The same day an ethics complaint is filed saying, basically, Gov. Grifter abadoned the state (while collecting her paycheck)another story breaks about how the state sat idle while 200 people died from neglect. I hope someone has a memo somewhere that says Sarah new and ignored the whole thing while she was running for VP.

Oh my God!!! This absolutely makes me sick. I hope Shannyn gets a chance to go on KO with this; this deserves national coverage. Bigtime. I don't care if she has effing resigned. This is criminal neglect and she should be sued. If she had even made a half-hearted effort to help the people of Alaska rather than only concerning herself with one photo op after another lives could have been saved. I just do not think it is possible for me to despise her any more than I do at this moment.

I'm sorry to be OT and responding to the Queen Esther stories here; I've been away up until now. When I looked up the story of Queen Esther, she "won" her place as the Queen to the King of Persia (back then) as the result of a beauty contest. She was the most beautiful candidate chosen to replace the former (evil) queen who did something to end up in the King's disfavor. So, point number one: Esther won a beauty contest and $arah was a beauty contestant. Close enough.

I think that when $arah fantasizes about power, ruling and all things famou$ and $arah. The role of Queen must have come into her mind more than once. As Queen, Esther had the ear of the king, and in the midst of palace intrigue, managed to save the lives of both her protector-cousin and the Jewish people.

IMHO if Sarah can't be Queen (or King or President) then the next best thing is to have the ear of powerful people and be a King-maker. In that regard, we all have to be on guard. That bunch that she is pallin' around with (to use a well-worn conventon phrase) is a pretty conservative bunch. Getting back to the topic at hand, compassion and caring for others, they care only for themselves. $arah is in rich, powerful and nasty company.

  9. Gryphen this is disgusting and inexcusable! I have come home from working my volunteer job at our local food bank. I am tired and feeling some despair after watching our lines get longer every week as people line up for food. I come home and read this and at least I can think we are lucky to have food to give them.

Things could be so much worse and obviously are if the state of Alaska is on moratorium from the Government and have to be told to get their shit together so no one else dies.

Actually I don't know if I feel better or not. So many unfeeling and uncaring politicians are becoming a real drag. I have fantasies of all of them without tax payer paid health care and standing in freaking food lines, I wonder would they even understand then. Christians my ass! Sarah Palin is an empty vessel and the leader of the soul sucking Christian lot.

Sorry I said it was a bad day.

  11. Is this what was coming down the road for her? I am very aware of what the ramifications are if a hospital loses Medicare/Medicaid funding (just as an example). The fact that the STATE of ALASKA has been disallowed from enrolling people borders on criminal and in fact, if people have died as a result of the State's lack of action and mismanagement there is probably criminal liability here.
It appears the problem lies in the actual signing people up/enrolling due to lack of staff (why doesn't SP use some of her ill-gotten money for her citizens???). The article states that the people on the program appear to be receiving services.
Not a good idea to get in trouble with the feds with it comes to Medicare/Medicaid. They don't take it lightly and have some pretty big hammmers to smack the local authorities bigtime.
She needs to rot in a really nasty jail.

This one involves the death of Alaskan citizens due to disorganization, and basic neglect as well as complete incompetence among those who were charged with running the State's program.

This is what happens to individuals, especially the sick and vulnerable, when a sociopathic megalomaniac takes charge. $P cares only about herself. She apparently allows her staff to spend all their time on HER and nothing on their job duties (oh wait, that IS their job duty).

Over 227 people appear to have died due to incompetence in HER state program. The elderly, the sick, the vulnerable....

I'm sorry, have I missed her open and honest explanation or did these people die just to piss her off???? Whatcha think?

Palin is beyond disgusting and reprehensible as alaska's "governor". The only concern she has is for herself. Self-centered, one-dimensional, uneducated, humane-ly challenged, mean-spirited and a hypocritical fool.

What has this flute-playing, onetime loser beauty queen contestant actually done as governor that Alaskans can point to and be proud and satisfied with their governor's unassailable, committed, consistent and dedicated work for their stante and its' citizens?

Palin = drama 24/7. It is her personal soap opera and to hell with actually doing her job. She's very busy, ya know. Very busy traveling, whining, tweeting, dodging ethics complaints, tweeting, whining, bullying people, whining, tweeting, doing anything else by "progressing" Alaska, tweeting whining--and now "writing" an op-ed article. Uh-huh! Written by? Certainly not her, but who really cares because we already know she has limited brain activity, except when it comes to being adored by her base who are similarly limited by brain dysfunction.

This situaltion with the elderly is deplorable and unnecessary. 200 + lives wasted, snuffed out because of inadequate attention and care. More are at risk. Where was Palin? Where is Palin?

My heart cries, my anger rises, my soul hurts for these victims and potential victims of this travesty.

Palin's Red Shoes suddenly symbolize the loss of blood flow in the loss of lives with Palin walking over their graves unconcerned. She is very busy, ya know.

  21. I do blame Palin and anyone who would give her a pass on this is a despicable human being!. She will blame someone else, wait and see. She will also say things like: "people should not look to their government for personal needs" or "families should take care if these people not the government.
Well many disabled and elderly do not have family and are too sick to depend upon themselves! Why do Sarah and other Republicans and others hate the sick, the disabled and the elderly??? It's ok if you are one of these and are rich and have endless resources but most Americans don't. Many disabled people are treated as if they enjoy being ill so the can collect money from the government!

All these Republucans who want to do away with or privatize Medicare never mention the MILLIONS of disabled people on Medicare. Young people. Anyone can be in an accident or contract an illness and become disabled. And just look at how Sarah views and treats the very weakest members if our society. She treats them like dirt!!! These people are the weakest---disabled, sick and elderly without money! Shame on. Sarah Palin and whomever is in charge of overseeing these poor people!!!

There are times where people do need help and what is wrong with wNting help from the government. This anti and small government approach is babaric in a society like ours!!! Is this related in any way to those two doctors who resigned?? Who is in charge of overseeing these services??

There is a saying that you can judge the character of a society by how it treats it's weakest members. I once visited Denmark and Norway and the people were so happy and there were no homeless or elderly or mentally I'll people in the steers. And yes they are socialist, but who cares!! People work and have their own businesses just like here. The difference is that their taxes are high but so what!! The people don't mind too much, they have less stress, less worry. They get a month off work each summer and more during the year.
I am going off on a tyrant because I am so furious reading this.Sarah Palin seems to be a great example of a capitalist pig. And if we judge her administration by the weakest in society she gets an F minus. Sarah cates about money and business not people. She doesn't care about humanity, nature or wildlife. Her op Ed piece was a sales memo for big oil.

She makes me sick to my stomach. Her tweet about Andree yesterday was the last straw. And now this?? Will there even be any ramifications? I hope every family sues - sue Palin personally and the state.

There is no excuse for this! In the United States of America, people should not die waiting fir a bed in a facility nor should an elderly or disabled person who can't bathe themselves be neglected for weeks to rot.

This is a huge iceberg to me. Let's see the BS and excuses in the response.

Undoubtedly H&HS has sent multiple notices to the State to correct their actions. The fact that there are multiple lawsuits for this egregious behavior left them no choice. It is NOT USUAL for a State to receive an embargo order. States routinely run Medicare/Medicaid programs - evidently under $arah Palin, the vulnerable citizens are simply either left to die or helped along to a speedier death.

  38. basheert-All disabled people in this country have Medicare. Even those under 65. Just an FYI. You have to have a very low income to have Medicaid, but all people on federal disability are eligible for medicare.

These really are federal programs. But the care of people is localized. I am disabled and a health professional previously so I know a lot about all of this. But each state is different. What I would like to know is who (what person) was in charge of this program and did they report directly to Palin. And if you compare the state budget this year to last, was there less funding this year?

The Federal government financed 61% and Alaska couldn't do their part. There are states and cities with 10 times the population who do a better job. There is no excuse for it.

I am ready to move to Norway. Who cares about the cold. Just kidding. I love my country. But I do not like what the GOP have done and even though they are small, they are loud and fighting like crazy and didn't learn a damn thing from Bush. Are they are all stupid? Or do they just care about money. It has to be one or the other, sorry. The Republican party was never like this historically so no offense to anyone. I am talking about the far right nutjob creationists who ignore science and judge everyone else.

Also, lets all send this to the MSM constantly. I already started. When you post a twitter, put #Sarah #Palin. The little sign makes it so that if someone does a search for her name, then the tweet will show up.

  39. lisbeth: Married to physician at county hospital...in AZ we have AHCCCS - which replaces "medicaid".
Our program is run by the State, the dollars come from the Feds (like you say). The AHCCCS program is LOCALLY run and managed but the H&HS has oversight and responsibility.
Near as I can tell from the post on ADN and other little bits of info - this has been an ongoing investigation and an audit was done approximately 1 week prior to her resignation. You and I both know that in order to do an audit, they've been investigating for a long time. It also appears physicians have been complaining about the fact patients cannot get onto the plan and get needed care and are dying.
Bottom line: $P is responsible. She's the Governor. Even if the problem existed prior to her term, she did nothing to fix it. Undoubtedly there have been many contacts with H&HS prior to taking this step and embargoing the enrollment because AK isn't doing it according to law, or not doing it efficiently and these are Fed dollars.
I posted the link to the ADN story on Shannyn Moore - she posted to me that she'd gotten it and she plans to get it onto HuffPo. This may be the story the Wicked Witch cannot kill. Especially with the deaths involved due to neglect of assessment.
They will try to blame a shortage of nurses (something all hospitals are dealing with nationwide). IF this is the case, then it should be happening everywhere because we do have a serious nursing shortage....but it is not. It appears to be another PalinProblem - due to ignorance, neglect and flat out uncaring. Just let the people die...!!!
H&HS isn't in the business to embargo programs. Obvious to all of us who are either in or have been health professionals, this is a situation that was allowed to get so bad, with lawsuits and deaths, that the H&HS people had to stop the program. H&HS is also responsible for all the dollars that evidently were not being appropriately used for patient care - and why people are dying.
lisabeth I know you recognize this is not just a one shot deal. For H&HS to embargo enrollment indicates just how serious they view this situation for Alaskan citizens. They do NOT do this. In fact, I'm not sure they have embargoed a state enrollment prior to this one.
If this does not bring her down, we should all move because our country is officially lost.

lisabeth, thanks for your great comments. I think we all care deeply. This is probably the worst thing she has ever done, and I will wait to see just when all these deaths occurred.

Regardless of the outcome, someone should be held criminally responsible. These were U.S. taxpayer dollars sent to Alaska to care for people. This is negligence and must be dealt with properly.

And yes it is huge huge deal that the federal government has taken over. It's shameful. A few people at Mudflats said they did not blame Sarah. I don't get that. The person in charge of the department reports directly to Sarah. She knew about the lawsuits and doctors had complained and left. She is definitely responsible. She took over as commissioner in 2005 and was not replaced when Governor Palin took office last year. But Jackson says she recently compared notes with Palin and it was clear they had a difference of opinion. She says she offered her resignation and the governor accepted. Jackson declined to be more specific.

July 24, 2008, Anchorage, Alaska - Governor Sarah Palin today announced the appointment of Bill Hogan as Commissioner of the Department of Health and Social Services.

“I am pleased to have Bill Hogan join the cabinet,” Governor Palin said. “With his experience and five years working for the department, he can continue promoting and protecting the health and well-being of Alaskans. Bill has already started implementing priorities for the department including battling substance abuse, promoting health and wellness, continuing with health care reform, developing a plan for caring for seniors in Alaska and meeting the needs of vulnerable Alaskans.”

HMMMM.... I am just playing catch-up with the days' news here. I know there are other posts up re. this topic already, so I don't know if anyone has responded like this:

Someone above mentioned that these findings came out about a week before $arah's resignation. The way She i$, $he might not have taken the time to read the report until the day of or the day before her re$ignation. $he might have $een the writing on the wall and panicked - that'$ why the hasty call and hurried/angry resignation speech on the 3rd.
I am wondering if this is the iceberg (at least in her mind)?
