Jon OWNS this lady and she seems to be completely unaware of how badly she comes across. I want EVERYBODY to watch this interview because, once again, Jon does the job that the MSM simply cannot seem to do for themselves.

In my opinion Jon Stewart is a national treasure.

I have great respect for Jon Stewart and his self control ... I would have reached across the table and bitch slapped that woman.

Ms. McCaughey is a disgrace to women today. She shows up in her lowcut see through outfit to use as an apple to Jon Stewart who is much smarter than that. She twists the truth, uses fear tactics in an attempt to make arguments which support the healthcare industry. So old school. We voted for a change from this type of politics.

She lost it the moment that she looked through her huge notebook for some information while Jon suggested marking important pages with postit notes. Then, he hummed that quiz show theme while she searched and searched--- priceless! (The only thing that she was good at was interupting and trying to shout him down).

In the 1940's the "greatest generation" gave their all for the betterment of "their" country and the betterment of the world. It's interesting that this "greatest generation" produced children so diametrically opposed as we see in these videos. A Jon Stewart who is so willing to "give back" for the betterment of his fellow Americans and a Betsey McCaughey, so willing mislead and put fear into those members of the "greatest generation" for the sole purpose of increased profits for the healthcare corporations.

I hope she doesn't steal Sarah Palins thunder.

  7. I half-expected her to get up halfway through the interview and do some fancy pageant walkin'.
    Geesh....

  8. I've yet to watch these videos but I agree that Jon Stewart is a national treasure any day.

Thank you, Jon Stewart. The GOP is a national joke. It is both appropriate and sad that their key strategists are fodder for Comedy Central.

  10. For those of you sick of obsessing about Sarah Palin (I know I am!), start obsessing about health care reform. We need your help. Please promote this effort:

"March for Health Care Reform" on Sept 13 in Washington DC or major cities across the US.

I was blown away by Jon during this interview! He is so damn smart, but not smug...he called her on stuff and she couldn't comprehend what his was trying to say. I also liked where he told her..."I like you...but I'm trying to figure out how your brain works...?" He has READ this bill, and he can't see what she is talking about!
If you look at a copy of a "advance directive" it is meant for when/if something happens and you can't speak for yourself. For her to say, oh yes, but people change their minds in this situation is ludicrous! How can you change your mind if your brain dead? Because that is what this is about. Do you want to have IV nutrition pumped into your veins like Terri Schiavo? Or not?
She is missing the WHOLE point of a advance directive and making it into a bad thing.
She is the Dangerous one, just like Palin and her Death Panels. These people have no fricken idea of what they are talking about and should STFU!
Jon Stewart he is just great, gets right to core issue and rips into her.
My dream is to have Sarah Palin go on Jon's show!
OMG! She wouldn't last 5 mins with him! I'm 100% positive he wouldn't fall for the winky, blinky shit either.

  12. Don't you just love the way Jon calls people out and they don't even know it?
I absolutely love it. We DO need more people like Jon and Rachel. No two ways about it.

  13. Jon is my go to guy for news. He not only keeps me informed (and entertained) but he can be brutally honest in exposing hypocrisy in a way no mainstream news organization seems to be able to do anymore.

He is my new Walter Cronkite. I trust him more than any other news reporter. And yes, it *is* the news.

She was absolutely clueless. She and Palin and Bachmann deserve each other. It is truly frightening to know that people like these three (and others) actually have a voice in our government as well as a platform from which to shout that voice. So many will believe them and never find out where the truth lies.
I also believe that Jon Stewart is a "treasure". Wish there were more like him.

    God help us!

Thank you Gryphen for helping to expose them.

P.S. this is my first post but I read you ALL the time and appreciate all you do.

That bleach she uses on her hair has destroyed her brain. Agree with the commenter above: Jon is the new Walter K.

  16. Patrick Appel on 'The Daily Dish' said this today: "I have been far too soft on Betsy McCaughey. Even when conferring on her the title of "most destructive effect on public discourse by a single person" for the 1990s. She is way less responsible and tethered to the world of "normal" facts and discourse than I had imagined."

Is Sarah going to be jealous or what? Betsy is upstaging Sarah for the most destructive, polarizing, batshit crazy person - and Palin nowhere in sight to defend her title.

  17. I agree with his comment about he doesn't get how her brain works.

Interesting to see a good portion of the time she wouldn't even look at him and instead looked at the audience. He even called her on it when he said 'Who are you looking at?'

Jon's points, as always, are clear. I have no clue how she was able to make the leap from what was said in the bill to her thought it would 'kill old people'

National Treasure, indeed. I'm glad he & the show's staff are taking a well-deserved break, but gawd. I'm gonna miss them for the next three weeks!

Maybe the GOP can run Palin/Bachman while announcing that McCaughy is their choice for Secretary of State.

Of course Bachman would insist on Bachman/Palin

  19. She is not clueless unfortunately. She is a paid shill for corporate healthcare. She sits on the board of Cantel Medical Group - a medical equipment company. I wish Stewart had questioned her on who pays her. I would like to see her defend her board position of a medical eqipment company as not being a major conflict of interest.

But her whole schtick is disturbing. She starts out by throwing down the '1000 page bill' as if to say.
"Hey, it's so big it has to be bad!" That is probably as far as she has to go with most low-information voters.

But then what got creepier is how she DIDN'T have those important pages marked - those pages that PROVED big government was going to 'reward' doctors for killing old people.

Jon Stewart was masterful. He never let up on her all the while maintaining grace and good humor. The sad thing though is that on his show it's preaching to the choir.

I have seen her being criticized for being 'unprepared' and 'disorganized' on other blogs. I call BS on that. I content that was part of her 'act'. She knew exactly what the bill said and more importantly didn't say. She isn't used to people calling her out to read them the exact section of the bill to justify her lies and tried to cover the fact that she could not substantiate her lies by pretending she was unorganized and at one point saying the page was missing!

What a piece of work. I'm tired of this crap. I'm tired of liars. If you oppose this bill for legitimate reasons, fine - give them! But don't say doctors are punished for offering end-of-life counseling.

When a side has to resort to out-right evil lies to convince people, that is a clue how desperate that side is.

Jon did a great job on this one.

For someone who supposedly has a PhD in whatever, she did not sound like it. Her rhetoric "death panels," the inducement to force doctors to comply, and the money away from Medicare, should have been explained better. Her use of language was not very well chosen. More inflamatory than scientific. She is from what is called the "soft science" or as some call it "pseudo-science."

She has been reading too much legislation or maybe she got her degrees the other way. We won't mention that rumor.

There is so much of a drive to keep open capitalism forging ahead to make bucks that no one seems ready to put a stops anywhere. This bill might just do that or start the process.

One cancer treatment cost someone $23,000. That is one single treatment. It broke them. This is a young viable person. My sister was given high end cancer medication that cost her $1500 per month.

Without any insurance my asthma maintenance medication costs me almost $800 per month.

Insurance companies are in this for the bucks. That's it. We need across the board health insurance.

When an aspirin given in a hospital or other facility cost $10, there is something radically wrong with that.

Also, the lady was much more interested in her stage presence and talking down to the audience than in a real discussion with Jon.

Another thought: Did she consider printing the bill on both sides of the paper? Didn't look like it. It would have been a little green of her.

  25. Newsflash. Seems this lady resigned her job today:
    http://foxyurl.com/sjZ

    FTA:
"CANTEL MEDICAL CORP. (NYSE: CMN – News) announced that on August 20, 2009 it received a letter of resignation from Ms. Elizabeth McCaughey as a director of the Company. Ms. McCaughey, who had served as a director since 2005, stated that she was resigning to avoid any appearance of a conflict of interest during the national debate over healthcare reform."

  26. If she thought she could go on the show and win over a few converts, she is sadly mistaken.

  27. "...she was resigning to avoid any appearance of a conflict of interest during the national debate over healthcare reform."

Yeah, her and Dick Armey both.

TOO LATE! They're both the poster shills for conflict of interest.

One of the neatest things about Jon Stewart is his ability to call people on their shit and not do it in a mean way. Just telling it like it is.

You know, I think following the tricks and trash kicked up by Palin following the election last year has altered my perception and maybe even my brain chemistry. When Ms. McCaughey bounded out on stage with her big professionaly whitened smile, swinging her dyed blond hair holding a big binder of papers I thought: Uh-oh. The same super-confident attitude, the same reliance on props, and of course she is all "for healthcare reform". Except she mostly tried to use fear tactics and mis-information, and when this didn't work, tried to be condesending "isn't he cute" bullshit. God bless Jon Stewart, he never gave her a pass; and I think she was too unaware to realize how skillfully her perky fear-mongering was shown for what it was by him.

Her incessant finger-wagging, just like Sarah, is so condescending. Mittens should be required of both when they speak. (A muffler might be a good idea too.) Stewart is masterful.

  30. That woman has a PhD in Constitutional History? Which constitution was it? The reason she was looking at the audience is they run in packs. They can’t stand alone because their individual thinking won’t stand up to argument. Every time he would make it clear she did not know what she was talking about she tried diversion and it did not work. I asked thousands of patients if they had a living will or advanced directive over the years. I also asked them what they wanted done if they coded or became unable to tell us what they wanted. A doctor would also ask and then right their wishes in the form of an order. Not myself nor any doctor or nurse I worked with were trying to ration care or cause someone to die sooner because they were “no longer a use to society”. All we wanted was to know what that person wanted when they could no longer speak for themselves. We thought it was a waste of resources and was costing society a lot of money to keep someone who was say brain dead on a ventilator for months or years, but we did it because it was not our choice it was someone else’s personal choice. The problem is in most states when they do become unable to speak for themselves their families can go against their wishes. I’ve seen countless heartbreaking situations.
