Sarah Palin is headed to Hong Kong! Or not. We really don't know yet.

Bill Clinton. Al Gore. Alan Greenspan. Sarah Palin? CLSA, the Hong Kong-based brokerage, announced today that the hockey mom who quit her job as Alaska governor last month will be the keynote speaker at its annual investor conference in September. The CLSA forum is a big deal, having attracted not only Clinton, Gore and Greenspan in the past but also heavyweights like Nobel Peace Prize winner Archbishop Desmond Tutu, former Walt Disney boss Michael Eisner and scientist Craig Venter (who founded the Institute for Genomic Research and led the team that sequenced the human genome). In a press release, CLSA (in which France’s Credit Agricole is the major shareholder) boasts that it “consistently sets the benchmark for original and thought-provoking content.”

(And they asked Sarah Palin to speak? The only thought that Palin will provoke is; "What the hell is she talking about? Is that even English")

The press release from CLSA also has this surprising bit of news: The trip to Hong Kong will be Palin’s first trip to this part of the world. “We are delighted that she will make her first visit to Asia to speak at the CLSA Investors’ Forum,” the statement quoted CLSA chairman and CEO Jonathan Slone saying. During last year’s campaign, the governor touted her state’s proximity to (the Asian part of) Russia as proof of her foreign-policy bona fides, so I’m surprised to read that she has never actually been here.

(If they think they are surprised now just imagine how surprised they will be when she doesn't even show up.)

It’s great that Palin finally plans on making it to Asia. However, a word of caution to people hoping to attend CLSA’s forum: According to this story in the Anchorage Daily News, people counting on Palin to be their keynote speaker sometimes get stood up. “Organizers of an Anchorage event that has been billing Sarah Palin for weeks as a star speaker were left scrambling Wednesday after learning that the former governor won’t be there for tonight’s event and claims to have never been asked,” the newspaper reported last Wednesday. “It would be at least the fourth time in recent months that an anticipated Palin speech has fallen through after Palin and her camp disputed they had ever confirmed it. That includes the brouhaha over whether she’d speak at the annual congressional Republican fundraising dinner in Washington, D.C., this summer.”

(Okay gang what do you think the odds of Sarah showing up to this thing are? 3 to 1? 5 to 1? Snowball's chance in hell to 1?)

Might the same thing happen to CLSA? The press release from the brokerage announcing its plans to host Palin doesn’t include any statement from the former veep candidate herself, and there’s no word yet on her Facebook page or her PAC’s website about the Hong Kong gig. Still, CLSA says there’s no reason to be worried. “It’s confirmed,” says Mandy Ho, a CLSA spokesperson. “She will be a speaker at our forum.”

Perhaps we need to introduce CLSA to the Alaska Family Council. I do believe they will have a lot in common pretty soon.

Okay let's just for a moment imagine that Sarah really DOES show up. What will she talk about?

"Gee China, thanks for funding our illegal war in Iraq!"

"Why do you people keep eating your food with sticks? Haven't you invented the spork yet?"

"Why am I always hungry again an hour after I eat takeout from one of your restaurants?"

"Do you know Jackie Chan?"

You know I kind of hope she shows up. It should provide a lot of material for Jon Stewart, David Letterman, and of course this blog.

Sarah is all about the money... a six figure payment for 30 minute speech will get Sarah to go.

Read Politico article on her having over 1000 requests to speak.

It is long past time for someone to rat Sarah out... and put an end to her speaking career and political career.

She'll show up -- this one's supposedly worth six+ figures. $P = show me the money!

  3. I hope they have that contract in writing.

I'm wondering how all of palin's followers are going to like that fact that she stood up her own people and then went to a foreign country to speak.
I think that greedy streak of hers is showing.
She (possibly) shows up, but only when she's paid.

    Gryphen...PAID speech.

Did Newt's list of suggestions include speeches? She's already written an article like he suggested.

  8. ahh yes, her iffy track record with speech engagements, but were any of those engagments going to bring her a six figure income along with it? Nope, for that kind of money, I'd expect her to show up.

Hong Kong businessmen aren't really a sympathetic crowd for her and some of them are already making jokes about it.

Gryphen.... would you do the speech for 100-250K and a free ride to Hong Kong for shopping?

Did CLSA offer her free clothes to sweeten the deal?

Does she have to give Johnny Mac a cut of her fees?

Sarah's motto... "No reporters, no questions"

    ReplyDelete
  10. She'll be there, she already saying "Show me the Money" in Chinese...too bad Sarah doesn't know that she's going to be secretly filmed for an MTV Asia version of the show Punk'd.;).

Seriously, she is the best kind of entertainment...a real live tabloid celebrity, with a healthy dose of circus freakshow...more bang for their speaking dollars.

I'd love to see Sarah's "rider"...it's probably full of a whole lotta crazy...besides the shopping allowance, airfare for the Wasillabilly clan, and silk boxers for Toad.

She'll make it silly, there's a fat dollar sign attached to this one, unlike the other events. There should be no doubt, she'll make it for the right price and the right price has been met in the past for this event.

What the hell she'll talk about..........sheez....

If these people are stupid enough to pay her six figures to show up and spout her world salad, then yes my guess is she will show up. I cannot wait for Jon Stewart's take on this!

  14. Great. This is a chance for her to make a fool of herself on a truly international stage.

And she will. Has she ever appeared in public appropriately dressed and behaved and given a talk that is intelligent and to the point? They're paying her: she's going to have to talk for at least an hour. Who's going to write that for her?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Didn't she disappear for 2 or 3 weeks last September, after McCain picked her (sorry, I wasn't on Palin watch then)? I know everyone thought they were prepping and coaching her, but in looking at her summer 08 vs campaign photos I'm convinced she had some "work" done then (at least Botox, maybe a peel and a few other little procedures, and a quick weight loss program. I suspect that's why she's disappeared this time, with more intensive work paid for by Murdock (a la Greta Van Suckup). Whoever is writing her Facebook pieces will write her speech. The Domonionists and the Family have a lot riding on this woman; she'll go to Asia.

    ReplyDelete
  16. She'll go. She's trying like hell to look 'Presidential'. After all, she thinks that she's smarter than President Obama and blames McCain for losing.
    What WILL she talk about?
Why, whatever her speech writer puts in the teleprompter. And I would bet that she doesn't take any kind of questions, either.
We all know that she will make a complete fool out of herself.
Does she even know what the word 'geopolitical' means? Can she pronounce it? Can she spell it? Will she be taking her entire family with her?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Anonymous7:34 AM

Watch, she's undergoing a makeover by someone or a group of powerful people positing her for high office bid. She'll show up in Hong Kong with a speech written by someone brilliant, will deliver it well cuz she does cue cards, and will be thought by some to have become, well, informed or something.

My hope is that the mountain of stuff available and documented any opponent can use against her will bury her re-emergence as a viable candidate for anything. You Alaska bloggers have been and are our last line of defense, don't let up.

    with thanks...

Anyone got a date on this?

Ivyfree - actually, when the GOP was dressing her and writing her speeches, she was appropriately dressed and able to deliver a speech. It's when she is left to her own devices that she is in trouble.

Here's hoping she tries to go it on her own. If she listens to the right Svengali, we are all in trouble.

  20. LOL, let the FUN begin!

Even with the money involved, she may still have another panic attack and not show.

  21. Gasman7:59 AM

Either way, it is a win-win situation as I see it. If she doesn't show, she is exposed once again as a greedy, temperamental diva who doesn't follow through. If she does show up, she be the same verbal stumblebum that she has always been.

If we are really lucky, she'll write her own speech.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Anonymous7:59 AM

What a joke! We live in a very sick society when someone as clueless, uninformed and Stupid as Palin is paid six figures for READING a speech prepared by others. She will show. Money and no media seal the deal.

Also I do not believe the Politico story. It is plain advertising, trying to make her look desireable. Look where the info came from:"her aides." who are they exactly? Meg and Ivy? Also the part about her book being 85% done is a ploy to show what/where she has been the last 30 days.
When it is finished, it is one book I will not buy or read.

There are so many intelligent women in this world. They should be getting the speaking deals!! It's sickening that a phony, manipulaive liar like Sarah gets any media attention. She should be kissing the medias feet for all the coverage and they have been SO easy on her. We need to work on changing that like Gryphen and others do if she tries her hand at any public position. The woman is evil and a divider and bad for our country.

It should make everyone sick that a lying, cheating quitter is paid that much money while millions have no medical help and millions of mentally ill US citizens live on the streets in this country. It's shameful really.

Her book 85% done? Well, I guess that settles our question on how many pages it will have - no more than 10, and most of them quotes from her parents' fridge stickers, with the rest being some glorified pics of her during the 2008 campaign...

I still can't get over the 'fact' (?) that she will be able to draw six figure salaries from her supposed screeches, and that she supposedly is so sought-after. The article in politico mentions that she will also do appearances at Christian and right-to-lifer fundraisers. THAT tells me, that the article must be quite old - maybe from right before/after she quit her latest job?

I hope they have a #2 booked and ready to go. They are going to have a hard time finding a replacement less than 48 hours before the gig when she bails on them.

One has to question the choice. Did CSLA not know her history of confirming, unconfirming and failing to show? What are they thinking? It isn't going to help their reputation and credibility when she bails.

And....exactly what would she talk about. She had NO, NONE, ZIPPO experience or knowledge of finances. She's in financial trouble with the government over her various and sundry PACs.

Are these people clueless? Their choice shows such poor judgement I wouldn't trust the recommendations of this organization at all!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Her book 85% done? Didn't she say that it was already written and in the journals she kept? How hard can it be for a ghost writer to sew that up with the sports analogies? I hear the Heath's are avid refrigerator magnet connoisseurs. When all else fails there is the old testament. It would take anyone else 15 minutes to put her memoirs together. With a newly acclaim status on the international stage she is a force to be reckoned with.

When does the book hocking tour start? Remember the Christian blocks will buy it up in mass and it will be a best seller if all the pages are blank. Then Faux TV and radio. Jenna Bush will have an exclusive and so on.

Since taking the Freak Shows out of the circus things haven't been the same.

  37. Just now on MSNBC Anne Kornblut of the Washington Post said Palin's opportunity in Hong Kong came about because Palin has signed up with the Washington Speakers Bureau. So much for being that vaunted mavericky Outsider to Washington politics.

Unfortunately for the curious among us, Palin's speech in September in Hong Kong "will be closed to the media, and the topic has not yet been confirmed".

I'm guessing that the foolish people at CSLA have allowed Palin set the parameters for her speechifying and access to/by the media, just as she did while governor and VP candidate. Stupid, and enabling. When will these people ever wise up?

By selecting Palin as "the face" of America's financal expertise, the U.S. will be discredited and dismissed. This could devalue our currency and/or promote a switch to a different International monetary standard for the planet.
This is a frightening and threatening issue to National Security (if she is to be presented as a U.S. financial expert).I do not find it amusing - the implications on our image and our credibility are frightening.

For the purpose of inciting World War III ... look at the civil discourse she promoted among follow citizens here in the United States of America. On foreign soil dissing the American leader, didn't Huckaboo do that? And will those folks feel dishonored when they find out the deceptions of this woman? Will they blame America?

Considering that this is a paying gig, she might just show up. She can also use this to supposedly beef up her thin resume but that is the only reason she will do this. It is closed to the media, she can read off a speech someone with some brains and abilities has written for her and come off sounding as if she knows what she is talking about. It will all fall apart if she is asked any questions, but it's doubtful she or her coaches will allow questions in order to keep the cover up.

If she does show up for this gig, it will be proof positive that she is all about the money. She blew off something she claimed meant a great deal to her (The Pro-life gig in Anchorage with Star Parker) more than likely because it as a "freebie" and now that she thinks she is a big deal, she just can't allow herself to do something without being paid for it even if it is something important to her.

Her supporters claim that she's already done a pro-life gig this last year so she isn't ignoring the situation but they also don't mention that she was paid for her time on that deal by way of gifts, travel expenses and whatnot (heck we don't know what may have been given that she might not have reported to anyone).

RAM is also pointing out that since the AK family counsel group made some complaints about decisions she made while still working as Governor, she doesn't owe them anything, which also just reinforces the claims that Palin is one who believes you either support her 100% of the time, like her decisions or not, or you are under the bus for good in her eyes. Apparently she doesn't work well with others, because she can't take criticism of any kind without the need for some form of retaliation.

Her worshipers are also jumping on the claims of 1000+ invites made by an "anonymous aide" as proof of her popularity. Now isn't that funny how if an anonymous aide were to make a statement they didn't like they would loudly denounce it as untrue because it was made by an "anonymous" source, but if they like what that anonymous source is saying they hold that bit of information up like it is a sparkling ray of truth shining brightly amidst a sea of fabrications.

It is amusing to watch them twist and spin the information they have to somehow justify everything they want to claim about their beloved Sarah because to admit to themselves she doesn't give a rat's ass about them and she cares more about herself and just getting as much money as she can grab ahold of without regards to anyone or anything else would no doubt drive the majority into a psychotic episode! They are unable and unwilling to face reality when it comes to their divine goddess, and so when she eventually falls before their eyes, (well some will never acknowledge it at all) it will be a disturbing (and entertaining) scene to behold.

She has 3 weeks to do the act of will she or won't she.

Whether she shows or not doesn't matter to me. Maybe all the Communists in the world will adore her and see her as the greatest finance expert in the world, so what? What she is good at is to make a fool out of every sucker that buys into her same old crap. If she can make fools of Communists or Capitalist let her at them all.

If the WP article that KaJo mentions is correct she signed up with the Washington Speakers Bureau. That says she is following Newt's advice. There is no little bit pregnant. She will go 100% Newt or she will be a 100% failure. Will she quit on Newt?

If she doesn't quit on Newt she is considering a move. The game she is in won't allow considering, she must have an East Coast base of operations. That will suck all her time and energy if she is going to fulfill the GOP's dreams. Nothing maverick about it. Newt can hee haw an excuse and look the fool if he says she is just a little pg, not moving to D.C. I don't have a problem with him looking irrelevant.

The men of Hong Kong like a good ho as much as anyone.

The women of Hong Kong will love her speeches for the anti-abortion groups. They will love her for being the vision of motherhood. She must share her running and stay in shape tips with expecting mothers.

    Gryphen,
Will one of the stipulations for her getting the money be that she has to dress up in the little ' Geisha costume ' they provide for her ( at least she can take it home legally now )with the Red ' Street walker' shoes..?
Because after all.... aren't these investors just like those old white guy Politicians in the South. They are horny and want a show.

And do the modern Geishas, and $arah, wear a G-String to collect the Money they earn. Maybe I am confusing THAT with those Texas Strippers and their old Oil Tycoons.$arah pals around with them these days too.$40,000 tucked into her waistband the last time she passed though there.

  67. Somebody should send the CLSA Andrew Sullivan's list of Sarah Palin's lies.

If no one is going to be allowed to interview her or question her, at least they ought to know going in how much of her speech is true.

(p.s. the list at the link is already outdated! It was updated in July 2009)

WSJB states, in last line of article, that CLSA's Wheeler declines to say whether Palin is getting paid ( or not) for her appearance.

C4P is fighting over Palin's not showing up for a church sponsored prolife agenda but is showing up in Hong Kong for a (topic to be determined) speech.

C4P is also stating that until Sarah or Meg confirms the Hong Kong speech that they are NOT assuming she will attend.

    Let the infighting begin :)

  69. Was stunned when I read about the speaking engagement at CLSA.What were they thinking? Finance knowledge...Just read the articles on her PAC. Unless, she "starts to blink", she will be there. She wants the money and the free trip to Hong Kong. 85% of the book finished. Her ghostwriter writes fast because the book probably has the intellectual depth of a puddle. If one believes her father's emails from her, she is acting like a fact checker for her ghostwriter. Really, the world is eagerly awaiting to read about her points scored for the big game in High School. Looking forward to September and another game of will she or won't she attend?

Nora O'Donnel said Palin is exclusive, that wasn't the word she used. Palin does not leave her small little mental world of high school protectors.
She will be sheltered and coddled wherever she goes anywhere.

Can't someone research marketing in China and self publish a book that the everyday Chinese would like to buy? Instant millionaire. Present the photos of her amazing body when she stayed in shape while expecting Trig. Don't they love a good work out story in Hong Kong? They will like the video where she hikes. Translate the audio where she and Todd talk about their little fish pickers flight from Texas. What is wrong with putting out the photos of Sarah Palin being the American just like us?

They actually educate Hong Kong citizens. Someone might notice how different she is from other expecting mothers. Get the photos out there to go viral in the world, even if they are blacked out in the states. Whether she blows or shows Hong Kong, let Asia get to know the Sarah we know.

This is the game they are playing to keep her name alive. Next it will be a speech in Kenya to prove she knows what a continent is. She might claim she will be at an event in Alaska again. She doesn't have to show up for any of them.

It's only a game. I like that her handlers are taking it international.

  71. Her speech will be in private and not open to media interruptation. Of course not, it will be a "Made for Teleprompter Address", written by her ghostwriters. If it does make "you tube",the question of who wrote the speech will be answered. Am I correct that she is one of 40 speakers? If true, what is one less if she does not show? As far as her not being paid, please, she would not put her foot on a plane unless she heard the sound of a cash register ringing.

Hey, maybe the CLSA just wants to study her. I could see it: imagine you're some Chinese guy and you hear that Sarah Palin is this up-and-coming politician, and some people think she's brilliant and some people think she's crazy. So you invite her over to get a good look at her yourself.
Btw, is it possible some joker who has no connection to SP could be making these speaking engagements for her and then she never shows? Just saying.

Does the CLSA know everything she touches turns to sheet? They are doomed.

the norwegian blue on Mudflats said CLSA is more Aussie and Canadian bankers getting some of the Asian experience. Sounds like a Murdoch approved project.

Does Murdoch control the Hong Kong media, too?

She is supporting the communist economy if she uses their hotels and eats in communist restaurants. She could be a boon for their media if they cover who she is and that she is visiting. Even if she is just too good to let them see her. May be a photo op at the great wall. No one has ever done that before. She will be the ugly American. If you get a chance to watch "The 2 Mr. Kissels" there are scenes form the Hong Kong she would be visiting. It has nothing to do with China and everything to do about world dominance.

I just heard the Texas secessionists on Rachel Maddow. That is a place where Todd could find solace. Rick Perry needs a feminist like Sarah. If they can get her out of the fetal position the Palinbots could say she is next giving a speech in Texas. I think she hides out around Waco with team secret.

  80. But like I said somewhere here yesterday, she can never hold her own. Bill Clinton and Al Gore are intelligent, you see. Now, if someone writes the speech for her and there is no question and answer session or any other kind of real session, she might come out OK. But in the end, she can't hold her own and there's no fixing that.

Thanks to one of the posters over at Mudflats, the connection has finally been made. There's been prior talk of Murdoch's yacht up that-a-way, the possibility of her getting a slot at Fox, the positive stories in any Murdoch-owned publications, which includes Bill Kristol who adores Palin.....and now this:

"Jim Walker will be best remembered for creating CLSA.
Born in Scotland ,raised in Australia.
He started his career with Rupert Murdoch.
That was taken from his obituary.
Murdoch and CLSA go back a long way.
Sarah I believe is his latest project or pojectile she will be launched on America from this conference."

Amen to that! That's all she cares about. Money and Power. I don't think this Country will fall for another Murdoch puppet though. Even some neo-cons have had it with the way the Big Corporations have taken over our Government. hat will never get better. It can stabilize or it can get worse. It costs too much money to run for high office, they need big business to back them.
Teddy Kennedy was fortunate to be born with wealth. It helped him to stay true to his vision. Though, I think even if he were born poor, he would have done the same.

This is too funny. Palin blew off a pro-life gig but will travel to Hong Kong where the govermment forces abortions.

Well, I guess we know who won....her ethics or the money.

How is this helping Alaska...as Palin promised to do in her farewell speech?

    ReplyDelete
  92. Anonymous11:41 AM

So, un the "Bizarro" world of this blog there's some sort of equivalency between the ultra-prestigious "Alaska Family Council" and the CSLA?

Is there a more-uninformed, almost Chaplinesque group than the people
who are regulars to this board?

(That was rhetorical. The answer is, of course, there is not.")

I don't know why I bother. Perhaps it's because I beleive that perhaps one or two of you might be brought to the light--not about Palin--but to calm, rational deliberation about an issue.

    Let's look at the CLSA.

First, China has had, and still has, very serious civil-rights issues--one being the government's "one-child policy" which has kindled strong
anti-government feelings. (Couples can be fined thousands of dollars for violating the law, imprisoned, sterilized, or FORCED to have abortions.

This policy has resulted in a demographic where there are 30,000,000
young males in the country than females, an "unintended consequence" which not only result in deep-seated social resentments, but in labor shortages, and potentially, too few younger adults to care for the elderly.

Recently, there was an unprecedented demonstration in Guangxi province where 3,000 people overturned cars and burned down government buildings.

These sort of rebellions, for the historically illiterate, are often the seeds of civil war. That's not likely to happen because the policy is about to change.

Enter Sarah Palin as the KEYNOTE speaker at CSLA. She will no doubt
be sitting down with Chinese leaders while there to discuss the right-to-life issue and the ulitimate negative social and economic consequences of government-mandated birth control.

Whatever else she may or may not be, she will be employed as a symbol to the Chinese to at least welcome a woman who, if a citizen in their country, would be severely punished for her views.

This is a masterful move by the Chinese and an equally brilliant move by Palin. If she can be seen as working with the Chinese to hasten the
demise of the one-child policy, it will be evidence that she can be effective at the international level on matters crucial to not only China but the U.S.

The announcement that America's most-outspoken advocate of the right to life will be the keynote speaker at CLSA will be a message to the chines people: we hear you and we are open to change.

So, have some sport with it if you will but the mere presence of Palin with Clinton, Greenspan, Gore, and Desmond Tutu, gives her stock an immediate boost---except in the eyes of most of you who avoid the obvious as if it were the plague.

  94. Anonymous @ 9:43 PM, yes, Jim Walker is one of the two creators of CLSA -- but he's dead. So's the other guy, as a matter of fact.

It's entirely possible, as AJ notes just above, that Sarah Palin really will be the ENTERTAINMENT keynote speaker, that there wasn't any serious intent behind inviting her to speak.

It's entirely possible that someone remembered the fake Nicholas Sarkozy telephone call from last November just before the election, and wondered if she'd acquired enough sophistication to realize that an invitation to speak before a group of investment brokers was not in her area of expertise.

Come to think of it, if her topic is "Follow My Tips for Conning the Rubes and Developing New and Different Grifting Schemes", she might have a future in the investment field.

Until the FBI catches up with her...

And as for you being moderate-- you have come here to insult us snidely because we don't see the world as you do-- Some of us understand the current complex tensions in China. You can be sure SP doesn't.

Look (re: the 2008 election and SP's role) there are plenty of intelligent women leaders in the Republican Party-- but they were by passed for a shiny object- SP- chosen to attract and distract. For someone who has devoted so much effort to the dignity of women- I am surprised that you were not offended by this frivolous choice-- You may think your girl is "Ordinary".. but did you mean ordinary as a table or as a tumor ??

My take on the 'closed to the media' 'not open to the media' reports. . .if you look carefully at the CSLA website detailing the September 2009 event, there is a clear invitation for the media to participate. . .but it is not on a free for all 'open' basis. . .media entities must apply, be vetted and cleared/confirmed.

'They' will be there, is my opinion. It will be interesting to see who makes the cut.
