Happy Labor Day!

I hope you are all enjoying this Labor Day so far. If you are off work I hope that you are spending some quality time with your family. And if you are at work, well then why are you reading this? Don't you have something to do? Just kidding, this is America, asking us to work hard on Labor Day is socialism.

If you click the title you will visit the Wikipedia page about Labor Day. (I am all about the learning.)

And speaking of learning, I did a little research on how Google decides which ads to display and came across this little nugget:

As users browse websites in the AdSense network, including YouTube, Google stores an advertising cookie in a user's browser to understand the types of pages that user is visiting. This information is used to show ads based on interest categories that might appeal to your users. For example, if a user browses many sports-related websites displaying AdSense ads or watches sports-related videos on YouTube, Google may associate a sports interest category with their cookie and show the user more sports-related ads.

In other words, the ads you see while visiting this site are determined by YOUR surfing history and not the content of my blog. So if you are seeing a SarahPAC ad (which surprisingly I have never seen) then that is being determined by the cookies on your computer.

Hopefully that clears a few things up. To be honest I also did not understand exactly how this Google advertising thing worked either.

Re: ads on this site. I have NEVER been to SarahPAC ( would never! UGH) and yet I see a SarahPAC ad on your site right now. So I don't think everyone has it quite right yet re: the Google cookies.

Just reset Safari (dumping cookies), and came here and there is still a SarahPAC ad on your site, albeit a different one. I can't stand to see those ads.

Now there's a Century 21 ad, and I've never been to that site, either. I don't go to real estate sites.

  5. Mommom has the right idea. (P.S. is that how it works, click on it, they have to pay more?)

We can all take heart that they are WASTING THEIR MONEY! Ha, ha!

  6. That Google cookie isn't working very well, since I automatically ignore any ad on any page.

I'm thinking that we're seeing so many "pro-Palin" ads because your blog is being surfed by the Palinbots/Palinistas and not that Google is basing the ads on what sites each of us individually has been visiting, but all visitors in general. If my take on this is correct, you've got a TON of Palinbots/Palinistas lurking about ...

Gryphen, my sister haz an Internet biz I help her with and we pay for google ads and I set them up. What is interesting is that when we sign up to adevertise on blogs//sites we are given the list of sites they might be on. That way we can opt out if we want -for ex we might not want to advertise on a competetitors site. Sarahpac or the others are given that same option. They are paying for their ads and given a choice . So they can opt out of advertising on your site. Also they must be paying a fortune per month to have as many ads as they do around the net.

I see her ad here all of the time and it makes me laugh. No other "politician"/wanna be celebrity has their pac all over the place. I clicked on it as instructed by those in the know, so they would have to pay Gryphen. Love it!

Anyway, the background is so hideous it looks like dog poo.

I guess they're trying to have some truth in advertising for once. Pitbull Crap is basically what they're selling now.

    LOL.

  12. i believe you are totally right about about the cookie thing, but the only palin related sites i ever visit are you, audrey, and maybe theopalinism -all or which are progressive/liberal (or in audrey's case, honest w/out being political). and my other browsing is mostly to science related sites and NOTHING politically conservative, so why does google think i want to support palin and ann coulter? the algorithm must need to be tweaked....

is everyone sure that they "pay-per-click?" say this site gets them 10-clicks-an-hour, does it cost them more next month to get and ad here than a site that generated 2-clicks-per-hour? i thought they just payed google and it chose where to stick the ads.

Gryphen. You do have the ability to block certain ads. The tool is available so you can keep from advertising a competitor on your site.

  17. I've no idea how all that stuff works. I sometimes see the Scarapak ad, but today I keep seeing an ad for David's Bridal!

Now that right there is just plain hysterical, considering it has been many years since my last wedding, and I have absolutely NO desire to try it again! EVER!
