The Conservatives have finally realized that Jesus was a damn hippy and have decided to cut ALL liberal passages out of Bible. NO I am not kidding.

The wing nuts over at Conservapedia, you know the fascist version of Wikipedia, have decided to strip the Bible of all of that "love your fellow man", "compassion", and "social justice". Below are their ideas for ways to make the Bible more "conservative-friendly".

As of 2009, there is no fully conservative translation of the Bible which satisfies the following ten guidelines:[1]

Framework against Liberal Bias: providing a strong framework that enables a thought-for-thought translation without corruption by liberal bias

Not Emasculated: avoiding unisex, "gender inclusive" language, and other modern emasculation of Christianity

Not Dumbed Down: not dumbing down the reading level, or diluting the intellectual force and logic of Christianity; the NIV is written at only the 7th grade level[2]

Utilize Powerful Conservative Terms: using powerful new conservative terms as they develop;[3] defective translations use the word "comrade" three times as often as "volunteer"; similarly, updating words which have a change in meaning, such as "word", "peace", and "miracle"

Combat Harmful Addiction: combating addiction by using modern terms for it, such as "gamble" rather than "cast lots";[4] using modern political terms, such as "register" rather than "enroll" for the census

Accept the Logic of Hell: applying logic with its full force and effect, as in not denying or downplaying the very real existence of Hell or the Devil.

Express Free Market Parables; explaining the numerous economic parables with their full free-market meaning

Exclude Later-Inserted Liberal Passages: excluding the later-inserted liberal passages that are not authentic, such as the adulteress story

Credit Open-Mindedness of Disciples: crediting open-mindedness, often found in youngsters like the eyewitnesses Mark and John, the authors of two of the Gospels

Prefer Conciseness over Liberal Wordiness: preferring conciseness to the liberal style of high word-to-substance ratio; avoid compound negatives and unnecessary ambiguities

Thus, a project has begun among members of Conservapedia to translate the Bible in accordance with these principles. The translated Bible can be found here.

You can read the rest of the Conservapedia description right here.

Perhaps a few days ago I might have believed that these morons represented only the most fringe lunatics of the conservative religious right. But that was before I spent yesterday attending the services at the Anchorage Baptist Temple I have become aware of the large number of seemingly regular people who readily applaud gay bashing from the pulpit, and who seem completely unaware of the compassion for others that was the foundation of Christ's teaching.

I have little doubt that when, and if, these vile individuals remove the love and compassion from the Bible, that Jerry Prevo will not only accept the validity of the new books, but that he will bring it to the pulpit and choose to preach only from it for the remainder of his life.

The information age, and scientific discovery have badly wounded Christianity, but it will take simple minded hate-mongers like this to finally destroy it. All TRUE Christians should stand up for their religion before it is too late.

  3. Gryphen the conservatives are doing the same thing they did with the GOP, pandering to the fringe and this will drive everyone else(intelligent, normal, educated individuals)out of the churches. By the roman catholic churches own numbers--they lost 800,000 members in the uSA last year--churches are dying (and it does seem strange that the RCC is now one of the least fanatical churches). The Faerie Tale book titled the bible has been rewritten many times over the centuries, but my only curiousity will be to see if they rewrite it with Bristol Palin in the starring role of the virgin Mary :)

At the risk of sounding like a Bible thumper, myself, I must guess that Jesus might take issue with this:

"Express Free Market Parables; explaining the numerous economic parables with their full free-market meaning."

Matt. 19:21 Jesus said to him ".....sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you shall have treasure in heaven...."

No matter how this passage is translated, I don't think it supports Jesus as being a preditory capitalist, nor did he consider himself emasculated when:

    John 11:35 Jesus wept.

  8. Holy fucking shit.

As a Christian, I'm starting to think that God is letting Christianity die so He can replace it with something 100% sane. I hear good things about Buddhism.

I didn't realize that being "Bible-believing" included taking a dump on the thing. I'm sorry, but that's what this is. It's a total 180 and a slap in the face to God Himself.

News Flash: That won't turn out too well. Ask Satan.

If this "version" were to become the norm for most of the 2 billion Christians, then the whole Christian religion would DESERVE to die out.

This is a disgrace to Christ, Paul, and everyone that followed!!

  10. I've always imagined that if Jesus lived on my block, he'd take the elderly widow next door to the grocery store, help the guy down the street paint his house, play basketball with the neighborhood kids, etc...

I guess in this "new and improved" version, he would turn the sprinklers on any kids that came on his property, tell the man down the street if he wasn't such a loser he could afford to hire house painters, and throw a bus schedule at the widow lady as he walked out to his Mercedes. Ugh.

From everything I have read about Jesus, he would have been a flaming liberal in present times. I can't wait to see how they transform him to a closed-minded, hateful, bigoted conservative. This should be interesting.

I can't believe any Christian would buy into this. I wonder what the Hindus, Islam and Buddhists think of all this BS here in America.

Dumbing down? They consider 7th grade reading level dumbing down? Are they aware that most newspapers are written at a 3rd grade reading level? That most adult novels are 4-6 grade reading level?

I notice they haven't done thing one with the old testament (where all those pesky commandments and rules are) but they are all over Paul.

Too bad they have to include that Jesus pinko commie hippie socialist. If they could just leave him out and concentrate on the racist, misogynist Paul they might have a best seller. Something they could display between Ann Coulter and Sarah Palin.

Jesus was a theological conservative and a social liberal, and that bugs the shit out of today's conservatives. They are theological liberals and social conservatives - polar opposites of the Jesus of the New Testament. The fact that Jesus was an unabashed liberal eats at them so much that they just can't stand it. So much so that now they are willing to edit the Bible the way FauxNews edits their transcripts. I guess they really don't hold anything sacred except themselves.

These asshat Bible thumpers would have us believe that Jesus is actually a pro-gun, homophobic, racist, white supremacist, sexist, bigoted, money grubbing conservative. Their Biblical editing makes perfect sense. If they don't resort to such theological liberalism, how the hell can they square their conduct with the Bible?

Spare me the horseshit about these folks being Christian, because they aren't. If this isn't the smoking gun that proves conservatives are totally amoral and without values of any kind other than the pursuit of power and money, I don't know what could be more conclusive.

Damn them all and go to hell.

Well, I heard about a month or so ago that the NIV was being tweeted. I also heard that Jesus' commandment of love thy neighbor as thyself was going to be removed. It is throughout the NT, so that would be a major revision. I never liked the NIV translation of the Bible anyway; I always preferred the KJV. And the KJV differs somewhat from the translation of the oldest manuscript which is now available on line. The following was taken from the link listed below:

"Codex Sinaiticus, a manuscript of the Christian Bible written in the middle of the fourth century, contains the earliest complete copy of the Christian New Testament. The hand-written text is in Greek. The New Testament appears in the original vernacular language (koine) and the Old Testament in the version, known as the Septuagint, that was adopted by early Greek-speaking Christians. In the Codex, the text of both the Septuagint and the New Testament has been heavily annotated by a series of early correctors.

"The significance of Codex Sinaiticus for the reconstruction of the Christian Bible's original text, the history of the Bible and the history of Western book-making is immense."

Sadly, the Book of Genesis was fragmented. But I am embarking on another Bible study with this translation.

    http://www.codexsinaiticus.org/en/

From what I heard, I think the new translation of the NIV will be fitting scriptures to the doctrine of man. Nothing new, just like the followers of Jim Jones who gave up their homes and families to move to the wilderness. And later they poured poisoned kool-aid down their kids' throats and their own following his order for a mass suicide. Too bad they didn't know that he was drugged up when he gave that order. Too bad they followed a man.

What really struck me was their fondness for randomly replacing just about any mention of "scribes" or "Pharisees" with the word "intellectuals" whenever the scribe / Pharisee in question is described negatively. Also, the site links to their guidelines, with some pretty wacky suggestions such as using the word "homeschool" to describe Jesus teaching his disciples (LOL). Oh I could go on...

  22. In response to Andrea: Yes. They are going to fuck with the Old Testament and remove all the Levitical laws except the one barring homosexuality.

Per dumbing it down, how are the mouth-breathing fundamentalists going to read the Bible if they raise the reading level?

On a more serious note, I'm not at all surprised that this is happening. I've done some readings on fundamentalists blogs where readers paint Jesus not for who he was but as some sort of sword-wielding, judgmental adventure with a thirst for the blood of sinners. Seriously. Among the things they don't want to be reminded that Jesus said or did:

    1. His warning that it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than it is for a rich man to get into the kingdom of God. (Give away all your wordly goods and follow me? Not if they can help it.)

    2. Jesus admonition to "love one another." (They get really bent when you remind them that Christ was all about love)

    3. Jesus' reminder that sinners should cast the first stone.

They took issue with other stuff, too. They want the Bible to read like a Godly endorsement of War and Capitalism. But it doesn't, and no amount of twisting is going to fix that. And they can do away with all the "gender-neutral language" they like. It still stands that Christ's female followers were more loyal in many ways than his male followers. And Christ knew it.

The best defense against these people is knowledge of the book itself. Now, I'm not a Christian - at least not as today's Christians define the word. But as a child my mother read us the Bible as literature and later I read it on my own because it is an interesting read. Half the nonsense that fundamentalist Christians spout as scripture is either inaccurate or twisted. And I'd wager that a very small number have read the book. The exposure to scripture that most of them get is through church's like the one Gryphen wrote about, where followers are not only given canned scripture, but told how to interpret it! Where's the potential for spiritual growth in that?

I've always had my "beef" with religion, particularly Christianity. How absolutely sad that the conservatives are now going to make Kristianity a dirty fucking word, Jesus a dirty name, and rape what is left of an old religion.

I personally belive that in his time, Jesus was considered a radical. He was for and of the people and he wanted for everyone, not just those in the top 1%. If Jesus could see what has been done in his name and with his name, I am quite sure he would puke.

First of all, its not 100% that there was even a historical person Jesus. Also, too, the bible was written by humans trying to control other humans. This latest version is just more of the crzy same. Just my opinion after escaping catholicism and doing some research. I don't discount the fact that if there was a Jesus, he was a cool loving hippeee guy who married and had kids and then 60-100 years later was reinvented as the son of god by people trying to control others. Makes alot more sense to me than the other story ever told, and may have more supporting evidence in the long run.

Whenever there has been a shift from blind obedience to the established forces of religion toward a search for enlightenment, there has been a backlash from those who stand to lose their influence, their positions of power. The Princes of the Church, as they used to be called, have been more cruel perpetrators of dominion over the masses than many secular rulers.
    Don't think so?
Here is a brief thought of religious history:
From the suppression of matristic worship in the Euphrates/Tigris triangle (the cradle of our so-called modern civilisations) came the rise of paternalistic religions, as presented in the writings of the Old Texts.
From thereon, through the dark ages and the renaissance, you can clearly see the repeating patterns.
For the past few decades we have been rapidly running backwards towards another repetition of the Burning Times, once again trying to remove Knowledge from all but "The Chosen Few".
    Sounds familiar?
As usual, it is the few who dominate the many.

  27. The real Bible has something to say to the Nicolaitanes who call themselves 'conservatives'. Revelation 3:14-16 " And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans, write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God; I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth."

He goes on in verses 17 & 18 to describe a totally insane group of people. So yes, the Lord Jesus Christ is puking. And these "Christians" won't be pleased when they see Him. grammy

Anon at 8:36. It's all kind of moot point. The interpretation of the Bible so many times over means that a lot of its original meaning was lost in translation anyway. And then when you consider what books didn't even make it in..

It's always seemed rather silly to me that religious people think we need a book to live by, anyway. I'm not minimizing the important of holy texts to those who value them, but the idea that without them humanity wouldn't intrinsically know right from wrong is ridiculous. Do we really need a book to tell us that loving our neighbor and treating others as we'd have ourselves be treated are good ideas? I hope not.

Sadly, true "Christianity" died nearly two thousand years ago and was replaced with something 100% insane.

Maybe we should take time out to look at how Thomas Jefferson saw the whole situation in his
day--and what, at least, this one founding father might think of these further attempts to bastardize the Christian philosophy.

Thomas Jefferson made a complete examination of the words and ethics of Jesus. He was fluent in Greek and Latin, by the way, and didn't solely rely upon the King James version of the Bible, or its interpretation according to a mere "hell fire and damnation," preacher.

"He told John Adams that he was rescuing the Philosophy of Jesus and the 'pure principles which he taught,' from the 'artificial vestments in which they have been muffled by priests, who have travestied them into various forms as instruments of riches and power for themselves.'"
(See "The Jefferson Bible" available online at angelfire.com)

Jefferson knew and understood, at least in part, the historical "big picture" behind the routinization, manipulation and establishment of Christianity as the religion of the Roman State and beyond. That "big picture," by the way, is not taught in Sunday School--and never will be.

This being said, perhaps the time has come for people, to come out of their dream states and start asking questions and demanding answers--as Thomas Jefferson did. In spite of what Prevo and others like him try to make their "sheep" believe, reading and responsible thinking for ourselves is not a sin. In fact, IMHO, that is exactly the example that Jesus, the Rabbi, tried to set and Thomas Jefferson tried to follow.

It certainly would give it a new meaning, Anon at 6:42. However, it seems rather inconsistent with Jesus' accompanying message to the rich young man, which was to give up all he owned and follow Him. Perhaps that was sarcasm as well? Somehow I don't think so.

  36. Morgan, Just to nitpick, I'm sure you meant that Jesus said let the non-sinners throw the first stone!

I checked for the beatitudes which are in Corinthians to see how they could spin that but they haven't gotten around to it yet. I bet they won't finish this project. I guess the fundie Muslims have done the same sort of reinterpretation of Islamic writings...

I used to think that maybe fundamentalism was religion for less intelligent people and maybe that was ok. Now I can see that it's a problem when they get together in these mega churches and decide to try to force everyone to see things like they do. How do we tolerate this intolerance?? Should we even be trying? Forgive them for they know not what they do.

So to you Christianity is ridiculous and a mental illness, and to the Far Right homosexuals and liberals are mentally ill. Sure leaves real Christians in no-man's land.

This also pisses me off from the standpoint as an advocate of 2 children with mental illnesses, a mother & grandmother...nice that you toss that word about so nonchalantly. I'm going to be driven off every blog I love. You have the chance to get the voters who do not like where the Republican party has gone, and the Christians who will wake up once they "re-translate" the Bible. But you WILL NOT get voters by calling people mentally ill for their beliefs!

Do you call your Buddhist or Hindu or Islamic friends mentally ill? Equally opportunity, right? In every blog I've read people have been respectful of other religions or quick to take back the "Religion is mental illness" statement and explain they meant Christianity. I check not only this blog multiple times daily but the blog of others who posted here, and I think I need a serious break.
