If, and when, Obama actually dismantles this ridiculous policy he will have done a great thing for the LGBT community. They will no longer be made to hide, and feel ashamed, of who they are. They will be accepted and respected in a place where,to this day, racism. sexism, and prejudice are still very much on display.
After this takes affect, and the Matthew Shepard bill is passed into law, the last breeding grounds of homophobia, like our very own Anchorage Baptist Temple, will find themselves further marginalized and their oppression of gay rights will now make them pariah's in a country where acceptance and equality is the rule of the day.
I know people that seem to have a good head on their shoulders
ReplyDeleteThroughout the campaign they saw through Palin, and McCain, and the angry crowds.. supported Obama.. yaddah yadda
I saw their true colors and was quite pleased :)
This brought the topic of how all the racism was coming back.. how we truly haven't moved on as a country
I brought up Gay people's and how their treatment is, to me, a mirror image of the whole civil rights thing.. so fine address this racism but then let's address the same hatred Gays and Lesbians, Bi sexual all that is facing
This is where they changed. OH NO! it's not the same! They bring it on themselves AND they haven't had to face the brutality that black people have
All I had to do was bring up Matthew Shepard and Teena Brandon.
They didn't want to have any more of the conversation
The civil rights years grab at alot of people's hearts.. I wish they could see a whole new era is just starting (well has been for awhile) .. Gays and Lesbians
It is just as sickening, close minded, and brings out strange rage in people (FEAR)
Another group I would like to see addressed
(though does not at all mirror the civil rights/homosexual tragedy) ... is the Midgets
They are still portrayed as cute little silly people
Couldn't at least one midget be a News Caster? Star in a movie while not being the "silly person"?
Our country has a long way to go.. if we can get through the very real racism.. and then see how those feelings are just being transferred to other "different folk" ... healing can begin..
sorry one more blab added to the post I did above
ReplyDeleteI don't, personally, think removing "religion" is the answer
YES, HOly Shiatz that is a HUGE root cause to the "hatred" towards others that don't fit "the mold"
But I am a Christian. I will never set foot in another "church" again (maybe a wedding/funeral) and refuse to try to "share the gospel of Jesus" with anyone.. because it is something I don't believe you can "Tell" someone.. it is something that takes place inside of you.. people can "tell" you how to think/believe (plus I believe God is a big God and doesn't need me as his spokesperson.. if he is "God" let him be "God" he can move in peoples hearts or whatevah.. on his own.. he is not a puppet that only moves when I flap my lips)
I think any sort of GENUINE Spirituality
(for me it is the Jesus thang) does wonders for how you see other people. That whole "Tolerance" thing..
But with Tolerance comes .. here's the sticky part that is missed so much
Being Tolerant ALSO means being Tolerant of the Intolerant
in other words.... get off your high horse and worry about ye own self for a change
Here is an excellent Quote.. doesn't exactly fit but popped into my mind
"I am not a failed attempt at being you" :D
-anne s.
That was a powerful speech!
ReplyDeleteI love our President. . . .I still worry that LGBT will be harassed in the military

The chasm between BO's rhetoric and actions are Grand Canyon-like, especially when referencing progressive causes. Rahm is calling the shots and doesn't want to ruffle corporate feathers until after the 2012 election. Gotta keep all that corporate money coming in.
ReplyDeleteI found this excerpt from Taylor Branch's new book "The Clinton Tapes: Wrestling History with the President" on the NPR Fresh Air website

to be quite illuminating in terms of what Obama himself may be facing with the Joint Chiefs and senior congressmen regarding a change in military policy.
The relevant info begins in Paragraph 9 with the following statement: " After the phone calls on Somalia, he projected his characterization of Powell back to the controversy that engulfed his presidency from its first day, over a campaign promise to lift the ban on gay and lesbian soldiers. ..."
Let's hope Obama gets elected President so he can change this foolish policy.
ReplyDeleteHere's a little something to make you smile...

File it under, "You can't make this s__t up!"
It's simply irrational that folks believe they have lost their freedoms or rights since Barack Obama has been in the White House. What these same folks fail to realize, they allowed a group of Americans to have rights granted them under the Constitution to be yanked out under their feet. Opponents state gay marriage or allowing gays to serve openly in the military would somehow threaten their religious beliefs or military function. It's a sad day in the USA when someone who feels they "could" be harmed, is given more voice then those who are clearly harmed and severely damaged.
ReplyDeleteIf gays want the "Don't ask, don't tell" policy removed, then I'm all for it. However, having been married to an Army officer, I believe you will see a great deal of violence directed to gays in the military when it becomes obvious who they are.
ReplyDeleteI am so inspired when he speaks...now he has to follow through. Anonymous at 12:30, I agree. There will be violence by ignorant, biased service members. Part of ending "Don't ask, don't tell" has to be consistent, immediate punishment and education for those who who still react inappropriately against those who are gay/lesbian. Just like taining a dog or a small child...
ReplyDeleteHow about an executive order---tomorrow!
