Of all the falsehoods and distortions in the political discourse this year, one stood out from the rest.
"Death panels."
The claim set political debate afire when it was made in August, raising issues from the role of government in health care to the bounds of acceptable political discussion. In a nod to the way technology has transformed politics, the statement wasn't made in an interview or a television ad. Sarah Palin posted it on her Facebook page.
Her assertion — that the government would set up boards to determine whether seniors and the disabled were worthy of care — spread through newscasts, talk shows, blogs and town hall meetings. Opponents of health care legislation said it revealed the real goals of the Democratic proposals. Advocates for health reform said it showed the depths to which their opponents would sink. Still others scratched their heads and said, "Death panels? Really?"
The editors of PolitiFact.com, the fact-checking Web site of the St. Petersburg Times, have chosen it as our inaugural "Lie of the Year."
Quick! Somebody notify Sarah and tell her she finally WON something!
Though to be honest, when it comes to lying I don't see how anybody could beat her. I am just saying.

I think it is really cool that Sarah finally came in first at something, instead of runner up! And, they could have categories of lies -- big scale political lies, outrageous hoaxes, small seemingly petty vendetta type lies, lies about family, lies about colleagues, lies about visors, lies about buses and planes, etc. etc. And what would be really exciting is that our Sarah would win in every category, each year! It must be great to have something that you are so good at, that you blow away the competition at all levels. Kind of like someone who can run the sprints, middle distances and marathons. Oh, yeah, that's another of her lies...

ReplyDeleteThere are death panels, panels of tv monitors, what make life and death decisions. They are already being used in California. At least one hospital in Maine is planning to install these systems to monitor its own patients and those in outlying clinics and rural hospitals.
ReplyDeleteUp to 120 tv monitors that show patients' status are overseen by two to three nurses or a hospitalist (physican with no empolyment outside a hospital).
If one of the mechanized readouts from the monitor is critical it will sound an alert. The computer that controls all these electronics will determine the treatement and will also determine that if the treatement will not improve the patient's condition, it will be withheld.
In the seminar I attented where this process was introduced, neither the attending physician, famiy or patient can override the computer's decision. Hopefully those restrictions will be altered.
I'm willing to bet money that Sarah and the deather's have never heard of this and would support it if they did, becasue it will reduce medical costs, by reducing skilled nursing and physician staffing, make death speeding decisions without consultation with those nearest to the patient, and thus will help the profits of the health insurance industry.
Congratualtions Sarah, you have won an award, and if you will allow me to make an observation, I simply couldn't agree more - you are Liar of the Year!! Gosh, you should be so proud, and this is the one time I will totally agree, you certainly deserve the honor! And Anon@4.37pm I would order one of those tee shirts and wear it proudly! ReplyDeleteIn the last year or so, several big insurance companies (including mine) have been successfully sued for withholding treatment for various reasons. If any of those companies tried to set up computer death panels, they would already be in court. BS without SPECIFIC references is just that, BS. Show me the insurance clause. Show me a court case. Good luck with that. NO, wait, I'll just ask my insurance company, one of the largest in the world. They are moneygrubbing aholes, but they aren't that stupid.

ReplyDeleteDoes not have tne ring of truth so I checked Snopes.com, couldn't find anything there, then I googled"computers to decide to stop treatment on patients" and came up with a letter to a newspaper in the UK,(I'm sorry I don't know how to transfer the address, it starts 'independent.co/uk and then goes on and on) regarding some story about it that must have been published earlier. Anyway the letter denied there was any such thing. The date of the letter -August 31, 1994! So Mr/Ms Anonymous, don't know where you got your story, but don't expect us to believe it, just because you say so. But you could always send it to Sarah, I'm sure she'd love to do a Facebook post about it.
Wow Sarah should be proud of herself she got 61% of the votes. She slammed insane rubbing Vicks Vaporub under eyes so you can cry Glenn Beck he only had 12.3%. As one who pushed the number one lie of the year, Palin helped to perpetuate the actual "death panels" which are currently being run by the insurance industry. Each time they deny coverage for someone who is desperately in need, they shove one more victim into their sausage grinder.
ReplyDeleteWith the Harvard study estimating that 45,000 people die each year because of lack of affordable healthcare, since Palin made her comment on August 7, 16,151 people have died because of the system that Sarah Palin supports.
I suppose that womanwithsardinecan is more knowledgeable on this subject and is prepared to refute the Harvard study. Have at it. I’d love to hear your rebuttal. As Dr. Phil is wont to say, “Good luck with that.”

In the time it took me to write this post, another person died due to lack of access to affordable healthcare. The count goes on unabated.
Please note that the true source of the Death Panels claim comes from Dr. Ezekiel Emmanuel's own analysis and writings. It is called "Principles for Allocation of Scarce Medical Interventions." In this he describes his "Life Years" system of decision making when the government is forced to ration out health care after itstakeover.
