Top Ten Things From 2009 For Which I Am Grateful

10) Alaska! I love this state, and cannot tell you how often I look out at the sky, and the mountains, and simply have my breath taken away. I have worked very hard this last year to fix the politics in Alaska, support the original inhabitants of Alaska, and to protect the beautiful wilderness of Alaska. How could I not, when this place has given me so very much?

9) The "so close we can almost taste it" passing of the Health Care reform bill. Yeah I know it is not passed yet but who could have imagined, even two years ago, that we would be this close to passing a bill that will help 36 million previously uninsured Americans get healthcare? Sure it is not perfect, not by a longshot, but it is SO much better than what we had before.

8) The faithful visitors to this blog! If it were not for you all keeping me honest there is just no telling what kind of unscrupulous things I might get up to. Seriously, I appreciate all of your support and all of your informative and fascinating comments.

7) Being placed on Sarah Palin’s “banned list”. That absolutely MADE my Christmas this year! My only regret is that if I had known Sarah was going to be so generous I would have made sure to get her something. Oh I guess if I keep digging around I may come up with something to pay her back. LOL!

6) The resurgence of 3D at the movies! Wow how did I ever watch movies without things flying off of the screen and bouncing off of my forehead? Do you remember back when you cared more about the acting and the story line than you did about super hi-definition images coming right at you at an alarming rate? Ah we were so young and naïve back then.

5) Pizza! Nothing more needs to be said. Simply the most perfect food on earth.

4) My fellow Alaskan bloggers! AKMuckraker, Dennis Zaki, Shannyn Moore, Celtic Diva, and Phil Munger, I love you guys! How could I have ever made it through this last year without your support, your informative e-mails, and your playful teasing? No way would this have been as much fun without so many brilliant, talented people standing by my side.

3) My daughter. She is the center of my world, the owner of my heart, and the reason that I will never stop fighting the bad guys (and gals) and searching for the truth. I love you angel.

2) President Barack Obama. To finally have a man in that office with the intelligence, the morality, and the honestly of this man absolutely makes my heart sing. I worked my ass off for him and I will do it again in 2012. Our country deserves a leader who REALLY takes his job seriously and who is working everyday to make this a better country. And, yes, that man is Barack Hussein Obama.

And the number one thing that I am grateful for from 2009 is....

1) That John McCain and Caribou Barbie did not win the election! Nothing gives me more pleasure this year than knowing that the American people finally woke up, and rejected the policies of the Republican party and that we do not have Uncle Fester and Queen Ester running my country.

I guess on a side note I should probably thank Sarah Palin and the idiots who forced McCain to select her as well. If Sarah had not come along and scared the holy crap out of the independent voters we may now be facing this financial crisis with a man in charge who suspended his campaign so that he could study the problem and then essentially shrug his shoulders. A man who believes that all you need to win a war is more bullets. And a man who has had cancer numerous times, and whose running mate would have been anxiously standing beside him while he slept and watching his chest rise just waiting for the moment when it would suddenly stop and give her the break that Pastor Muthee had promised her was coming her way.

I am thankful for Twitter. Without it, poor Todd would have to hike out Sarahs rantings much like Osama bin Laden and his underlings get their messages out to media sources from the caves they hide in.

I am grateful for the internet. Without bloggers such as yourself, it is possible that Palin would have succeeded in persuading enough voters that she was competent, credentialed, and credible to place a dangerous puppet of the worst elements of the right in control of the country.

  4. Gryphen, thank you for this blog. When Palin came on the scene I became very concerned and started poking around. I didn't pay much attention to blogs before but I sure do now. I guess I was behind the times. I have learned a lot. I really appreciate your efforts, the efforts of the other bloggers, and the intelligent informed observations of most who post here.

Grateful that I can come to a place with intelligent and often hilarious discourse on subjects (one bumpit-noggined creature in particular) that sometimes make me want to break every writing instrument on my desk in half with my teeth. Thankful that you guys can talk me down just by reading this blog and save on my dental bills! ;-)

Grateful for our President. Grateful that The Couple from Hell never made it into the WH in 2008 (and if it wasn't SP as VP, would it be LIEberman?) Thankful that Health Care finally has a start despite all the GOP/Blue Dog theatrics.

BTW, I LOVE "Uncle Fester and Queen Ester." The best analogy yet!

  9. In addition to the Alaskan bloggers that Gryphen mentions, I would like to give thanks to Celia Harrison at Frozen Justice (she should write a book!), the inspiring and politically active folks at Bent Alaska and Bill Bess (INCREDIBLE expose' of the Wasilla book signing, as well as amazing photography).

Agree with you Gryphen...glad Grandpa and Grandma didn't get elected.

Keep up the good work and I will be so glad when she is taken down.

  11. I'm grateful for you, Gryphen, and for the other fabulous Alaska bloggers. When challenged by one of my sons to say "ONE nice thing about $P, g'wan, Mom, ONE!", I replied that if not for her, I would never had seen and read so much about your glorious state as I have in the past couple of years.

And I'm proud of how you've fought to let the rest of us Down Here know about the Fish Picker from Idaho.

I am thankful to everyone who worked diligently, getting President Obama into the White House. I can sleep at night! I know he isn't perfect, and the wheels of democracy/legislature is slow. He is doing great considering everything that is on his plate. Blessings to the Obama Family. AND Blessings, Good Cheer, and Peace to ALL 'ye faithful bloggers.

I am grateful for all of my favorite Alaska Blogs "Immoral Minority", Palingates, Mudflats, Syrin, Shannon.

Has anyone ever told us why Palins Deceptions went into the witness protection program (Audrey). I miss her she was awesome. Did the Palinbots or AIPers threaten her?

  14. A great list, Gryphen!

Our problems are huge. And so are our resources.

I'm grateful for you and your persistence and tenaciousness and for all the thoughtful commenters on this blog. And grateful to you for reminding us about what's important (including, but not limited to, love, beauty, justice, thoughtful commentary and pizza).

  15. Like Just a Mote and Crystalwolf, I really didn't spend much time reading blogs before the Old Fart unleashed the Palin-monster on us.

I am eternally grateful to have found my way here, and to all the other great Alaskan blogs!

Better Obama-Biden than McCain-Palin; however, I really think putting Obama at #2 demonstrates blind Obama-love. Remember:

Obama DOJ let guilty Rethugs like Ted Stevens off the hook while moving ahead with the framed Dem AL Gov Don Siegelman who already served 9 months FOR BEING ON KARL ROVES SHIT LIST!

Obama DOJ refuses to investigate the unambiguous war crimes of the Bush-Cheney Regime; move along...nothing to see...

Obama dropped the ball on single payor universal health coverage and has now turned his back on the public option.

Obama put Goldman Sachs Alumni in charge of the Bankster bailout. Refuses to push for desperately needed financial industry regulation-without which we will never get out of this economic castrophe!

Obama continues unconscionable and illegal Bush torture and rendition policies.

Obama escalates war in Afghanistan; no sign of withdrawal from Iraq; and is conducting new secret war in Pakistan!

But, you know...Go Obama Go...thank god we elected him so we can say how great empty change is!

Sorry Gryph. Love your blog. I get how we have to "compromise"; but I want a REAL LIBERAL in the white house!

Gryphen, you have a great blog and I enjoy reading it. I would have never blogged until we were expose to the horror that is Mrs. Todd Palin. I started digging because I never heard of her and lo and behold I started reading the Alaska blogs to find out who she was and when I found out that she was a fraud, a liar, a bigot, etc., I worked my butt off not to let John McCain and Caribou Barbie ever enter the WH and I will do the same in 2012.

You have been an inspiration to me and I want you to know that no matter what anyone says continue to do the following:

"This blog is dedicated to finding the truth, exposing the lies, and holding our politicians and leaders accountable when they fall far short of the promises that they have made to both my fellow Alaskans and the American people."

  18. Aw, c'mon, all you guys/gals ate up all your Christmas Day leftovers? Gosh, we STILL have rolled flank steak, ham, potatoes, peas...

When I read this from you, Gryphen: "...whose running mate would have been anxiously standing beside him while he slept and watching his chest rise just waiting for the moment when it would suddenly stop and give her the break that Pastor Muthee had promised her was coming her way..." -- I have often wondered if something like this ever passed through McCain's mind. Or Cindy's ("You obsessed little twit, GET OUT OF OUR BEDROOM!").

There's only ONE person who was ever under the delusion that she'd be close enough -- living in some other wing of the White House, perhaps? -- to McCain night and day and not be married to him.

  20. Pizza, yum, homemade crust with a slight bit of cornmeal underneath before baking; topped with handcrushed fresh tomatoes and basil from my countertop garden. Then a few slices of the best Italian salami and fresh mozzarella.

Then lovingly baked on pizza bricks in the home oven.

Yep, 16 year-olds everywhere love themselves so pizza!

Pizza Hut is not the only pizza!

    Great List!

I'm one of those who went searching for information on McCain's biggest mistake, and found these Alaska blogs to be most informative.

I'm grateful for a President who thinks things though before acting. He's just like us, he's a breath of fresh air, and the man can write his own memoirs!

    Greetings Gryphen!

Thank you for sharing your Grateful list with all of us. I'm sure I'm not alone when I admit that it got me thinking what my own top ten were for 2009 - and that's always a good thing!

I am a faithful fan of IM and visit daily, however, I'm not a regular poster, but rather a silent supporter. As I hail from Montreal, Canada, it is difficult for me to judge, or easily provide an opinion. On the other hand, you and the IM community have been a vital source for my continued education of the ins and outs of "foreign" politics.

You have created a loyal and budding community that are welcoming, respectful and supportive where one feels at ease with the privilege to post a comment or two from time to time. For that, I am GRATEFUL Gryphen - thank you.

Happy Holidays Gryphen and may 2010 bring you health, peace and happiness to you and yours..... oh yeah, I forgot one - hopes for continued "intelligence, morality and honesty" in your government. ;=)

Please stop calling it the "Obama DoJ" and do some research. The DoJ was taken over by the Bush administration, who illegally staffed it with lifelong fundies. They can not be fired by the new administration, unlike political appointees who come and go with each administration.

The DoJ may never recover from what Bush did to it.

As for Ted Stevens, they didn't just let him off- they followed the LAW and the law had been abused. Yes, he is guilty, and he is being retried. But the Bush administration used the DoJ to punish people who wouldn't play along with their dictatorship and authoritarian government. You should ask yourself what Ted did to Bush to get prosecuted in the first place.

  27. I am grateful for an electorate who had the balls and wisdom to elect Obama/Biden. I am grateful for the cold, but clear, weather last January 20th, when I huddled with my children and a couple of million other people in DC and watched and listened to Obama's inauguration.

I think Obama's doing a great job in getting our once-great country back in business after eight long years of Bush/Cheney. And I adore those two little girls. Sasha's always holding her dad's hand and Malia is always holding her mom's.
What a wonderful family - showing true "family values".

  28. Pizza: I love pizza! And for me, 16 is a long ago far away memory, LOL!

Might even add some ham to the pizza ;)

I'm grateful and still impressed that we elected Obama. I'm grateful I was there on the National Mall to see him inaugurated.

I'm grateful to you, Gryphen, for always being entertaining and thought-provoking, and to your blog for remaining a place I enjoy visiting every day. It's strange that I find I find myself a part of this community of interested parties who take time out of their daily lives to discuss the Phenomenon That Is Sarah Palin. I'm happy to be a part of the (hopefully growing) group that recognizes the implications of her nomination and what it means about the press and politics in this country.

I'm grateful for the consistently thoughtful discussions here and at the other Palin-related blogs. I'm grateful for the combination of snark and insight. And finally, I'm grateful to read progressive commentary, Gryphen, that is still pragmatic (unlike Anon at 3:29, above) about the very real challenges facing Obama. You make me proud to be a liberal, Gryphen!

Ted Stevens is NOT being retried. His case was thrown out. Obama appointed the highest law officer in the land, Attorney General Eric Holder. Holder could have retried Stevens, but it was his decision-and his alone to NOT retry Ted Stevens; It is Holders decision to bury his head up his ass and NOT extend the same courtesy to former Alabama Governor Don Siegelman.

So...defend Obama all you want. His actions are deliberate and conscious. And he believes in Rendition and torture...

  33. Anon 3:09 asked, "Has anyone ever told us why Palins Deceptions went into the witness protection program (Audrey). I miss her she was awesome. Did the Palinbots or AIPers threaten her?"

Audrey was threatened by white supremacist and former Lynn Vincent co-author Robert Stacy McCain. (No relation, or not a close one, to Uncle Fester.) RSM attacked Audrey viciously and gleefully on his blog last summer. Audrey and her husband retained legal counsel, and she has not posted since August. But last I looked, everything she posted prior to going dark, and all of the comments, are still available.

RSM was actually fired from the editorial staff of the Washington Times not long ago for being too right-wing-crazy even for a paper funded by Sun Myung Moon. Google will lead you to more on RSM's squalid history, if you can bear it.
