LET'S PLAY SOME FOOOT (anti-abortion ads) BAAALL!!! Wait, what? Updated!

On Superbowl Sunday, along with the ads for beer, potato chips, and big manly trucks, fans will also get a very festive advertisement on anti-abortion from Heisman trophy winner Tim Tebow, and his mother. Which has some women's rights groups a little upset.

Wait did somebody mention anti-abortion and tie it to a sporting event? NOOO! Don't do that! With that combination you might awaken the slumbering creature from Wasilla, "She who must not be named", the "Mindlessly Menacing Mom from the Mat-su"....oh no it is too late! She has already flogged RAM into firing up her Facebook page.

Women’s Rights groups, like NOW, commendably call out advertisers and networks for airing sexist and demeaning portrayals of women that lead to young women’s diminished self-esteem and acceptance of roles as mere sexed-up objects.

What a ridiculous situation they’re getting themselves into now with their protest of CBS airing a pro-life ad during the upcoming Super Bowl game. The ad will feature Heisman trophy winner Tim Tebow and his mom, and they’ll speak to the sanctity of life and the beautiful potential within every innocent child as Mrs. Tebow acknowledges her choice to give Tim life, despite less than ideal circumstances. Messages like this empower women! This speaks to the strength and commitment and nurturing spirit within women. The message says everything positive and nothing negative about the power of women – and life. Evidently, some women’s rights groups like NOW do not like that message.

Yeah NOW what is your problem? This ad will only encourage women to defy their doctor's advice and do one of the only things women are good for besides fetching another beer, and destroying a Republican candidates presidential hopes, which is giving birth to a potential Heisman trophy winner. How is that NOT empowering?

NOW is looking at the pro-life issue backwards. Women should be reminded that they are strong enough and smart enough to make decisions that allow for career and educational opportunities while still giving their babies a chance at life.

Not to nitpick or anything but I don't believe that Pam Tebow actually had "career opportunities" to allow for. She is the wife of a missionary who now heads up the Bob Tebow Evangelical Association. In other words, and once again not to nitpick, but her whole job was to give birth to little Christian evangelical babies.

In other words, Palin's argument is specious and does not really relate to the actual circumstances surrounding this choice.

So in order to drive her point home more effectively Sarah is going to have to resort to her fall back position. Trotting out one of her children.

Now the question is, which one? Trig? No, even though he is the evangelical poster child for not getting an abortion, he undermines the message of giving birth to super athletes. Piper? Nope. Willow? Still under lock and key after her last B & E. Ahh Bristol! Perfect!

In my own home, my daughter Bristol has also been challenged by pro-abortion “women’s rights” groups who don’t agree with her decision to have her baby, nor do they like the abstinence message which she articulated as her personal commitment.

By the way there is NO pro-abortion group. It is called "pro-choice". And as far as I can tell NOBODY suggested that Bristol should not have given birth to Tripp. And if somebody did, they are just internet trolls who have no affiliation with any organized groups or intelligent Americans. As for people taking offence at Bristol's abstinence message, it does seem a little disingenuous to, on the one hand talk about what a blessing having little Tripp has been, and then on the other hand telling other young women "just say no" to the possibility of having a baby of your own until you can rope some guy into marrying you.

NOW could gain ground and credibility with everyday Americans, thus allowing their pro-women message to be heard by more than just their ardent supporters, if they made wiser decisions regarding which battles to pick. They should call attention to and embrace the Tebow’s message, instead of covertly and overtly disrespecting what Mrs. Tebow, Bristol, and millions of other women have chosen to do (in less than ideal circumstances).

Of course the protest has nothing to do with disrespecting Mrs. Tebow (and has absolutely NOTHING to do with Bristol, even though Palin is trying to conflate the two), it is really about proselytizing on national television. It is one thing for a running back to fall to his knees after making a touchdown and giving thanks to his God, and quite another for a group to introduce such a divisive topic in front of a huge viewing audience and pushing their religious agenda.

My message to these groups who are inexplicably offended by a pro-woman, pro-child, pro-life message airing during the Super Bowl: please concentrate on empowering women, help with efforts to prevent unexpected pregnancies, stay consistent with your message that for too long women have been made to feel like sex objects in our “modern” culture and that we can expect better in 2010. But don’t let your double standard glare so vividly as to undo some of the good to which you could contribute.

Hang on. I had to clear my throat, since reading that sentence about "being made to feel like sex objects" from the Facebook ghostwriter of a woman who used her Naughty Monkey pumps, high definition makeup, and short skirts to seduce men into voting for her made me gag a little. ("Ms. Palin? I have hypocrisy holding for you on line two.")

And CBS: just do the right thing. Don’t cave. Have the backbone to run the ad.

Translation: Oh we DEFINITELY want you to cave. But we want you to cave to us. Or else we will unleash the fury of the Palin-bots. At least the ones that are not currently unleashing their fury at me right now for backing John McCain.

To the Tebows: thank you. America is listening. We appreciate you.

- Sarah Palin

Okay just a few things to clear up here. Number one this ad is is designed to cause controversy. That is the damn point. So of course it attracts attention whores like Sarah Palin.

Number two this ad has been paid for by the group Focus on the Family. That is James Dobson's wacky group of Evangelicals. The same group, by the way, who decided that, after she gave birth to magical baby Trig, Sarah Palin HAD to be John McCain's running mate to get the support of the Fundamentalist Christians who were the most reliable voters for the GOP candidate. If Dobson had not become so enamored of Sarah Palin, and her magical pregnancy, she would NEVER have been on the 2008 ticket. And of course McCain would have still lost the election.

You to be honest. I could care less if they play this commercial or not.

Does anybody really believe that this buzz kill of a television ad is going to make some long suffering sport addicts' girlfriend suddenly make a decision like this? , "By God if Cletus's team wins and he throws me down on this futon to celebrate by giving me sixteen seconds of fumbling, drunken, semi-erect lovemaking, and I become pregnant with his slope headed offspring, I am absolutely NOT going to abort it! But instead I am going to raise it on my meager salary as a waitress at Denny's in the hopes that someday he can grow up and be a football star!" Yeah, good luck with that.

So let Dobson waste three million dollars on a Superbowl ad if he wants to. I am guessing that after the ratings come in, and they see how poorly it was received, they my decide to go back to picketing health clinics and telling women that their uterus is on loan from God, and they have no say in what pops out of it.

Update: The folks at Jezebel (usually a pretty humorous site) took serious umbrage at Sarah's latest Facebook rant.

Palin has been spouting the "liberals wanted me to abort Trig and Bristol to abort Tripp" bullshit for more than a year. NOBODY has ever produced a statement from any liberal which corroborates that contention. It is a facetious straw man argument which allows her to mount her high horse.

What liberals generally want is for women to be able to have the same choice that the Palin women had, to do as they see best for themselves and their families. What Palin wants is to restrict a woman's ability to choose. Palin would force all pregnant women to follow her path only. Palin is arrogant and stupid enough to believe that there are never circumstances which are so bad that terminating a pregnancy seems the most humane thing to do. She mocks the pain and grief of other women who've been forced to grapple with this decision. A mother’s life is endangered by a pregnancy? Tough, for it must be God’s will for her to die in childbirth. You don’t get any say in the matter. We know God and He assured us that we absolutely KNOW THE TRUTH and that you are wrong.

Palin is a liar and an arrogant moron.

Sarah Palin's ghostwriter reveals on FB: "In my own home, my daughter Bristol has also been challenged by pro-abortion 'women’s rights' groups who don’t agree with her decision to have her baby, nor do they like the abstinence message which she articulated as her personal commitment...."

As Gryphen notes, this and other charges are puzzling. There have been no public challenges--none--against Bristol Palin by "women's rights" groups. So, where does this late-breaking news (especially the "In my own home" bit, I'm wondering) come from?

I say, it is indeed from the Palins' own home: the fevered, paranoid imagination of Sarah "Say Anything to Get Attention" Palin herself. Remember those claims Palin made in Going Rogue, about "gang rape" threats against Willow (and Bristol also too, as I recall).... The same thing is happening here, with the Bristol as helpless victim of evil "pro-abortion" femi-radicals nonsense.

People get drunk watching the superbowl. I bet most people won't even see and comprehend what the message says. People will probably say why the f*** do they have this bs airing during superbowl. We want to see cute chicks in bikinis that we can F***.

Focus on the Family and Sarah Palin can go to H***. Sarah is a nobody and will always be a nobody. When Sarah's life expires on earth NO ONE will remember her. NO ONE!!!!

  7. I'm a seamlessly "pro-life" agnostic that recognizes that this ad is simply self-promotion for the Tebows and their religious foundation. Would Mrs. Tebow be doing this if her child grew up to be another "Ted Bundy" or even a second-string placekicker? I doubt it! I'd prefer they leave blatant political/religious messages out of an event like this.

  8. "But don’t let your double standard glare so vividly as to undo some of the good to which you could contribute."

This, coming from a woman who endangered the life of a premature, special needs baby by flying 10 hours on commercial flights while in labor AFTER her water had broken.

Oh wait a minute, that wasn't Sarah Paylin...she wasn't really pregnant.

  9. One. The Superbowl is swimming in testosterone, not estrogen.
Two. If there was ever more consistent and blatant exploitation of women as sexual objects, i.e.the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders, etc., I'm not sure where it can be found.
Three. Bob Tebow is an anomoly, not the norm.
Four. Sixteen year-old mothers with unwanted pregnancies can also look like this: An unwanted child + poverty - love and nurturing = the likes of Charles Manson.

Sometimes these right-to-lifers just make me want to spit! When I hear their mantra--beautiful potential within every innocent child, I get the urge to plaster a picture of Charles Manson on the nearest roadside billboard.

The reality is that the huge majority of unwanted babies do not turn out to be like Bob Tebow or Charles Manson. I would like to believe that by-in-large these young mothers live their lives loving their children. But these lives are lived walking the poverty tight rope.

$3,000,000.00. How could that amount of money be better spent? Small scholarships? Child care supplements for young, unwed mothers while they finish an education?

No, according to Andre Bauer, Dobson, Palin and others who hold their sort of thinking, this would probably be too much like feeding stray animals. They might breed--Yet, the truth is, if they are kept stupid enough and rely on abstinence rather than birth control, they will breed even more. And that, folks, is the scenario that best suits Dobson and Palin, etc., because the more unwanted pregnancies and abortions, the more young women they have to condemn with their holier than thou bunk.

As long as there is an objective network ad policy that allows both sides of any issue to be aired, I say, "let them do it." The problem is when the networks only allow ads for one persuasion to be aired, or only allow ads for some issues that they wish to promote, but not for others. If this ad runs, I say: watch carefully to make sure the network allows for 'equal time', and for placing the shoe on the other foot, next time.

The big question I have is: how on earth did Dobson decide to blow such an enormous wad of his 'charity's' dough on such a short-lived, non-productive endeavor that will probably not influence a single person, one way or the other, to pursue his charity's goals (of no abortions)? I seriously question Dobson's financial stewardship and assume the real motivation for him in running the ad is to: 1.) bleed the existing ministry dry before he leaves it; and 2.) get 15 more minutes of fame on the eve of his opening a NEW AND COMPETING ministry. The new ministry for Dobson and his son Ryan was initiated because Ryan's marital history would not qualify him to assume a leadership role in the present Dobson ministry. See blog.mattalgren.com/.../james-dobson-starts-new-business-radio-show/

Always try to dig deeper; there is ALWAYS more than meets the eye when any rethug issue is involved.

I believe if someone wants to pay for a superbowl ad that is not illegal, immoral or unethical (and I don't think an anti-abortion is necessarily any of these), public pressure shouldn't dictate what is advertised. Should NOW be prohibited from advertising during a Billy Graham televised crusade?

HOWEVER, one issue that seems to be lost is that people die and are injured (sometimes seriously) from making abortions illegal. THere are the women who self abort. But there is also the increase in violent crime. Freakonomics laid out the argument that the drop in the crime rate during Clinton's administration can be tied to the decrease in a particular kind of birth following Roe v. Wade. I never would have thought of it, but it makes sense. We know that when people live in crowded conditions there is more crime and violence. The only difference between death due to abortions, and death due to unwanted and inadvisable pregnancies is that you can point to the termination of life in an abortion AND You can't point your finger at the victim or the perp for violence caused by unwanted & ill-advised pregnancies (and not all unwanted pregnancies end with unwanted and unloved children). But doesn't mean someone didn't die.

I am willing to bet that when those testosterone-powered male fans see this commercial, they'll probably be inclined to run out to the nearest drug store and buy a box of condoms. The underlying message is, "Hey, guys, see what will happen if you engage in unprotected sex?" Maybe Trojan or Durex can follow up with a back to back commercial to drive the point home.

The real sin in this commercial is that Focus on the Family is blowing $3M donated dollars on several seconds of nothing instead of spending the money to take care of people in need (you know, those babies that weren't aborted). These so-called men and women of God sure do have a lot of moo-lah to throw around and also live in the lap of luxury. A prime example of what is so wrong with organized religion.

IMO, the biggest fear that Neo-Xtians have is that "whites" will become the minority in America. I know there's a reference out there for this belief and am not sure how far in the future they're predicting this--maybe 50-100 years? That, and they need a fresh, ongoing supply of mini-Xtians to grow up, work, support their local megachurch, witness like good little robots and have a bunch of kids of their own. And let's not forget their absolute ideal gender-specific role of women and girls in the kitchen raising the younger ones (as demonstrated by the Duggars on their reality show, and SP in her latest magazine spread). Uh, objectify much? This traditional role may be perfect for some, but certainly not all.

Bristol's "choice" to have Tripp was probably made much more attractive with the family's supply of ready cash and (I'm sure) paid help to take care of him while she works or goes to school or whatever they report she's doing now. Do any of those adoring wingnuts out there actually believe that Bristol is doing it all herself, all the time? Does every young girl faced with this momentous decision have this kind of support mechanism? I realize money's not everything, but it sure helps in the stress department, especially if Mom doesn't have to work two jobs to cover everyday expenses and day care. Gryph's second to last paragraph makes the case for a clear-headed decision that all the heart-tugging, overly cloying, "family values" commercials in the world should NOT cloud.

Empowerment for both women and men: It's YOUR life. Make the RIGHT decision for YOU--not for me, and especially NOT because some damn, meddling group of zealots (or the divine Sistah Sarah) toldja to!

The entire family, including the 5 kids, are all involved somehow in the Bob Tebow Evangelical Association which spurs their way of thinking. Last year was when I first heard about Timmy and his exploits (and I don't even follow football), but I've also read that the NFL may be having some problems promoting him for the draft after this advocacy ad airs.

These are the same people who say they "chose life" at the same time they deny other women choice. Pam Tebow gambled--and was lucky. Do we really want women to do this when they have alternatives? Pam Tebow is also active in lobbying to mandate states to open athletic programs for homeschooled kids in public high schools (why not private christian schools?). These people are insidious in working the system to turn secular institutions into evangelical centers (does the Air Force Academy ring a bell?).

And the ad is all about the control and subjugation of women--back to the bad old days when women didn't "know their own minds or their place" and were simply the property of men. I wouldn't be surprised if Mrs. Tebow doesn't walk 5 paces behind her sons.

I am also struck by the hypocrisy of the NFL and CBS. A couple of years ago, the United Methodist Church wanted to run an ad that merely stated that all were welcome in their church, regardless of skin color, ethnicity, or sexual orientation. They were turned down. The fact that some would see that message as political is in and of itself offensive. Why the double standard with that asshat Dobson?

I hope CBS does not run the ad. If they do, they will open up the floodgates for politically charged ads. If they refuse those, they will risk being sued for selectively allowing only some political messages and not others. As a network that is dependent upon the largess of the PUBLIC AIRWAVES, they will have a hard time defending allowing Dobson's ads and not those of the UMC.

<< I could care less if they play this commercial or not. >>

Really? Then why write a big column about it and solicit comments from all the Ellie Lights of the world?

A pulpit in nearly every American home at a fairly reasonable cost (per viewer, that is) is the goal of this "ad". The preachers are admitting that the "give 'em hell on Sunday" model is ineffective.

Palin piggybacks on any "event" to fend off her inevitable fate of being forgotten by the majority of Ameicans. She needs a better PR model but this is about as good as RAM can do for her.

I feel that the "pro-life" message just says that women without funds to fly to Sweden must go to the back-alley abortionists instead of a safe clinic. What a horrible message that is to cloak in phony righteousness.

Take it from me, growing up with a mother telling me about how she was forced to carry me to term was no picnic. Forcing a women to have a baby does NOT make her a loving, educated, solvent, energetic, or physically and mentally healthy mother.

    How narssistic can you get?

To bad the Palins didn’t teach Bristol about safe sex.
You, know the way Clinton practiced it?

Help with efforts to prevent unexpected pregnancies. . .

How come no one ever asks Sarah why she was engaging in unprotected sex at her advanced age and history of miscarriage?

If she even had Trig, both Sarah and Bristol are irresponsible, but want to dictate the terms of all other women's sexuality.

"...please concentrate on empowering women, help with efforts to prevent unexpected pregnancies, stay consistent with your message...."

What was Palin's record on empowering women and efforts to prevent unexpected pregnancies as the mayor of Wasilla, or the governor of Alaska? What was her consistent message?

Great post, Gryphen! Sorry, I don't plan on watching the Super Bowl, my choice.

I agree with Chris and have always thought that if Sarah was pregnant she put her unborn child at great risk in her so called Wild Ride. I have always wondered if she tried to make something go wrong so if she lost the baby it "wouldn't be her fault".

From a comment I found on Jezebel's article. I find it to express my very own feelings

"Empowering does not mean reminding women they are only a vessel for something else and that their autonomy is second to their reproductive status."

How could anyone want palin to abort Trigg if no one knew she was pregnant? Where were all these kooks from 2000-2008? Seems if they were sincere in ending choice, those eight years would have been the idea time.

    You gotta read, folks:

<< shoot a Doritos commercial for Super Bowl Sunday. >>

Not during the Super Bowl, someplace on Sunday morning on some obscure cable channel.

  65. Do you think Bristol is in this commercial or Sarah is trying to get her in the next commertial. Levi is in a Doritos commertial so I would bet Sarah is trying hard to get her name or Bristol some attention.

According to the book "The Family" anti-abortion is not about saving the babies. It's about control over women's bodies. It's not her body - it's God's body. That does help explain why there is no emphasis on providing support to single mothers and their children.

What is it with Sarah's unhealthy obsession with sex, especially when it has to do with her children? If she really wants to hammer home the abstinance issue, she should air photos of her new hairdo and cellulite striped thighs.

I'm sure there'll be enough viagra, rogaine and beer commercials to water down this message anyway.

I was reading through "Going Rouge: An American Nightmare" tonight when I came across SP's resignation speech (p.119), in which she states: "If I have learned one thing: LIFE is about choices". (caps in resignation speech are hers) Then she prattles on about choices that she can choose to make or not make (p. 120).

It just struck me as oddly ironic that she's all about CHOICE for any of her endeavors, while perfectly willing to deny anyone else choice in their lives. Her pro-life stance isn't new news to any of us, but I do appreciate the sweet irony -- and inconsistency -- of her own words (again).

  69. here's a petition to ask CBS to pull the ad:

CBS is reversing its own prior policy in not accepting "controversial" ads on Super Sunday. We all know how anti-family FoF really is, but they are just a front for the donors; according to the WaPo story, it was a small group of them who put up the money.

I want to know where the money for the "Monster.com" ad went. Never once have I seen a guy write,

"Former defensive back for Super Bowl winning team looking to land with contender. Will play special teams. Excels in short-yardage nickel packages. Willing to travel. Salary negotiable.

Once again, "Christian" statements from a fundie may not hold water. Gloria Allred is taking issue with Pam Tebow's statement that she was advised to abort Tim. Gloria says that abortion for any reason in the Phillipines carries a 6 year prison term and that the law has been in effect since 1930. Allred doesn't think the statement is true and is fact-checking it.

Ohme, I'm beginning to see why "Christians" need guvmint help in public schools when it comes to teaching their kids. Their "family values" & Sunday school classes aren't getting the job done about telling lies. Instead of bringing prayer back into the schools, maybe a 12-step program like admitting they're liars and just for today aren't going to tell a lie. Things just aren't going too well for the wingnuts.
