Thousands of Afghans shouting "Death to America!" protested the killings of children Thursday, the latest in a string of controversial cases in which international forces have been blamed for civilian deaths.
U.S. Gen. Stanley McChrystal has ordered troops to use airstrikes judiciously and fire cautiously to reduce civilian casualties. Still, each new report of civilians killed unleashes raw emotions that highlight a growing impatience with coalition forces' inability to secure the nation.
There are fears the problem could get worse with 37,000 U.S. and NATO reinforcements already starting to stream into the country as part of a military buildup.
More civilians die at the hands of insurgents, yet any time innocent victims are killed, the Taliban wastes no time in blaming foreign troops.
"Every time the Taliban kills civilians, nothing happens. There is no protest. There is nothing," said Hroon Mir, an independent political analyst in Kabul. "But whenever there are civilian casualties from NATO or Afghan forces, then there is a reaction."
Yes I know it is complicated.
Yes I know America has made promises.
Yes I know that if we pull out the Republicans will blame the WHOLE THING on the Democrats.
And yes I know that Obama said that he is dedicated to "winning" the war in Afghanistan.
But NONE of that matters so long as innocent people are dying at American hands.
Every time an Al Jazeera news crew captures the image of a dead Afghan child being carried through the streets by his father, a new terrorist is created. Every time a drone fires a missile and human beings become "collateral damage", we create a terrorist.
In short, so long as we are killing these people, regardless of our reasoning for doing so, we are making more enemies. And if these enemies have no army to join to fight their invaders than what is left for them to do but to become a terrorist?
And don't buy into that whole "they attacked us first" bullshit. That was a small ragtag group of frustrated Middle Easterners (15 of which were Saudis) who, either got extraordinarily lucky, or had some help from people in high places. None of the 9-11 hijackers were from Afghanistan yet, because they supposedly had been trained there, that was reason enough to start killing the citizens of that country.
Fifteen of the hijackers came from Saudi Arabia, but THAT country was given a "get out of war with America" free card.
It will do me no good to go back and dredge up all of that "we never should have invaded Afghanistan OR Iraq" stuff, instead we need to access what the war is doing to our country NOW.
For one thing it is costing us around one million dollars per year to keep a soldier in Afghanistan. (Just imagine what ending that conflict would save the American economy.) For another thing fighting it is continuing to damage our reputation around the world. And last, but certainly not least ENDING THE WAR WOULD DRAMATICALLY HELP THE DEMOCRATS IN THE NEXT ELECTIONS.
What? Does that sound crazy to you? Well then you did not pay attention during the last election.
Obama was elected largely in the hope that he would end our two wars. If he does not do so he will have failed to keep a campaign promise that will have a deleterious effect on ALL of the Democrats running in 2010. But if he DOES end the conflict the heavens will open up and shine its glory on him again, as well as any Democrat who backs him up.
Let's face it the Republicans have put themselves into a corner. They CANNOT support a withdrawal at this point, but Americans want one, so it will benefit Democrats almost exclusively.
Oh sure the Republicans will spit and call names but in the long run it will do them no good.
Mr. President you mark my words. If you pass health care reform and end these wars THE WORLD WILL TRULY BE YOUR OYSTER. And you will have the eternal gratitude of the American people and the military families who will surely demonstrate that gratitude at the polling booths in 2010 and 2012.
But mostly Mr. President do it because we are killing innocent people, and we just can't do that because, God damn it, WE are the good guys!
We are terrorists, too. With weapons of mass destruction. Don't ever forget it.
ReplyDeleteThe rethugs won't be happy till we're engaged in an all out war with the middle east. Remember when McShame was singing "bomb, bomb, Iran" to the tune of Barbaran? I know it was a joke but seriously they want us to ante up the war.
ReplyDeleteI agree 100%: GTFO of the middle east already!
ReplyDeleteIs there something else I am missing here?
I KNOW that we need a 'friendly' Afghanistan to get the oil from the Caspian Sea to the Indian Ocean but why are WE the only ones being 'the bad guy'?
What gives? I don't buy it...just another distraction from the "Secret Pakistani War"? It appears that we are attempting a clean sweep, for what? A pipeline from Caspian to Indian Ocean?
Again, why is US who is footing the bill and being 'the bad guys'? It seems that a lot of countries would benefit from the crude oil, including THE MIDDLE EAST!
Dear President Obama,
ReplyDeleteThe new headline @Huffington:
THOUSANDS OF AFGHANS PROTEST KILLINGS OF CHILDREN: 'DEATH TO AMERICA!'
Mr. President, how can you continue with this 'ethnic cleansing', because that's basically what it is. You are killing civilians sir, everyday now.
THIS, coming from the man who authored 'The Audacity Of Hope'? What happened to HIM Mr. President? Where is that man now?
END THESE DAMN WARS!
I bet there were Defense Contractors involved in this. And, unfortunately, Senator Dorgan who has been working on the abuses being made by the defense contractors, is not seeking re-election. Ugh!
ReplyDeleteOooopps: I meant Arabian Sea...
ReplyDeletewww.middle-east-map.com/topo-map.htm
ReplyDeleteAs you can see by this topo map, what countries will put up with an oil pipeline and where it would fit topographically speaking...Huh, yes to get it from the Caspian to the Arabian; Iran, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Omen, Yemen...hmmmmmm
The Saudi's are cooperating for now.
This IS NOT OUR FIGHT OR OUR RIGHTS! It is not our oil. SO WHY are we spending all this money, blood, sweat and tears if it could just be taken away if we are not in friendly negotiations?
I STILL don't get it! Anyone?

GRYPHEN...
ReplyDeletePlease take down the KAREN HANDEL solicitation. This is the idjiot who wanted to violate the Voting Rights Act provisions (being enforced in GA due to past civil/voting rights violations over the years) during the 2008 elections.
I suggest you Google her name and "voting" in GA to read about it.
Also, she a qwitcher just like SP. Quit her job as Sec of State in order to run for governor.
I live in GA, and believe me, some of the idjiots down here rival your AK idjiots.
Gryphen, we aren't the good guys. The problem is, we like to think we are. The truth is that in the last sixty years, we have killed millions around the world; overthrown democratically elected governments and propped up brutal dictators from Latin America to the Middle East, used ex-Nazis to introduce the use of "death squads" from LA to the ME, tortured and "disappeared" tens of thousands.
ReplyDeleteAnd lets not forget that our ancestors perpetrated the greatest act of genocide in the history of the human species.
American exceptionalism is an ugly, dangerous myth. This country is not special, it is not God-blessed; it's citizens are simply woefully, criminally ignorant of both history and current events.
Sorry, as an old history prof, I get worked up about this. I WANT us to be the good guys. But there is nothing more dangerous than a people who begin to realize they are in a decline.
Obama's campaign was to withdraw down and out from Iraq in a safe fashion and to return the focus on Afghan - not withdraw from there. You ask who paid attention during the election - you go back and check.
ReplyDeleteEveryone knows full well there is no way you can turn on a dime and withdraw troops. Doesn't take much intelligence to know that.
When will people learn that anything promised in a campaign is words filling air. The President is not able to do anything on his own in office without the senate and congress. If he signs and executive order - it can be overturned. I can't believe how many elections I've watched to see the millions buy in to think the President will change it all.
"Mr. President you mark my words. If you pass health care reform and end these wars THE WORLD WILL TRULY BE YOUR OYSTER. And you will have the eternal gratitude of the American people and the military families who will surely demonstrate that gratitude at the polling booths in 2010 and 2012."
ReplyDeleteSorry, gryph, but this sounds like a SP facebook rant in which she actually thinks the president is listening to her.
You wrong on two points. You say: "
ReplyDeleteObama was elected largely in the hope that he would end our two wars."
He campaigned on escalating the war in Afghanistan. http://www.barackobama.com/2007/08/01/the_war_we_need_to_win.php It is time to turn the page. "When I am President, we will wage the war that has to be won, with a comprehensive strategy with five elements: getting out of Iraq and on to the right battlefield in Afghanistan and Pakistan; developing the capabilities and partnerships we need to take out the terrorists and the world's most deadly weapons; engaging the world to dry up support for terror and extremism; restoring our values; and securing a more resilient homeland.
The first step must be getting off the wrong battlefield in Iraq, and taking the fight to the terrorists in Afghanistan and Pakistan."
Right or wrong he's doing what he said he would do. The best we can hope for is a significant draw down in forces before Americans go to the polls, but we are not going to "win" that war in any traditional sense of the word. We might come out ahead, but even that is in question at this point. Even if we do come out ahead that isn't likely to be the public's perception on election day, unless he can present Bin Laden's head on a pike and that would only be a symbolic victory.
The second place you're wrong is on health care "reform". The "reform" bill will be passed. Everyone is too far out on a limb to let it die. The problem is that without the public option what's left is likely to be very unpopular with a LOT of people. Of necessity the final bill will lean heavily to the Senate version. For a lot of people "reform" is going to mean that you either buy insurance you can't afford or face a hefty fine. It's likely that many millions of people will still not have any health insurance after the "reform" bill is passed.
The way things are going, unless Obama can pull some *real* change that people can believe in out of his hat, he had better hope that the Republicans run one of the nutcases.
No I am not naive. I do know all too well that campaign promises are not always kept, that America has NOT been the good guy, and that my post will not be read by anybody who can make the changes I have begged for.
ReplyDeleteBut you know this is how I feel, it is the place where I let those feelings out, and so if you agree fine, and if you don't that is also fine.
I REALLY do believe that if Obama could find some way to start bringing the troops home from Afghanistan it would help our country, and the Democrats in particular, immensely.
And yet I am painfully aware that such a thing is not likely to happen anytime soon.
OK... this is the first time I have posted on this new system.
ReplyDeleteDid no correct my typos.
soo: let's "not kid"ourselves...
other than that, I stand by my words.
history, repeat, doom...
ReplyDeleteIke was right. Beware the mil/ind complex.
ReplyDeleteStop war. Fix my damn roads and bridges and power grid, and water needs. Create jobs that make the world better, safer, cleaner, greener, happier, and less hungry; not jobs and industries that are designed to kill.
Now, go to your C street room and scratch yourselves
Gryphen...and do you know Why?
ReplyDeleteRhetorical Query, you DO know!
We are owned... hook, line and sinker... by the Military/Industrial/MultiNationals!
We in the US are living a reality of perceived individualism ...yet we are puppets on the strings of the above...
Until we begin to understand the key role religions play in keeping the masses in compliance, we shall be considered mindless...
May we remain ever curious, ever educating those around us, for that is all we can do...
May we do it well...
I do it "from the diagonal"... Ing
Gryph,
ReplyDeleteWhat you write is good, and makes sense. However, you avoid part of the truth. From the Jordanian who who blew up the CIA camp in Afghanistan last week, all the way back to the majority of the Saudis who pulled off 9-11, there was one clear issue that we pursue that they despised the most: blind support of Israel, no matter what the Israelis do.
Last year, when the Israelis were killing over 1,000 Palestinians in Gaza, including almost 400 children, only one Alaska blog covered it. You sort of covered Joe the Plumber as war correspondent.
Whether it comes to routinely torturing detainees, holding people for years without charge, or wanton destruction of the dwellings of innocents, or the killing of innocents, we learned all these things from one country, who some claim to be our "closest ally," but is merely using us.
Iran is next on their "to do" list for us.
Maybe you could write about that here. If you devoted eight in every 1,000 posts to our unpleasant relationship with Israel, you'd be improving the ratio at Immoral Minority, my good friend.

Of your posts on Israel, all but the two on Joe the Plumber as war correspondent are excellent, and even those two are good. And this statement, was excellent:
"If you were to compare the DNA of an Israeli to that of a Palestinian you would be unable to detect any substantial difference. For all intents and purposes they would be virtually identical. And yet they kill each other as if they are stepping on a bug, not a fellow human being."
You should write more about the core problem here, rather than the periphery.
Keep up the good work you're already doing, too!
He wants to be a war president.
ReplyDeleteGet relected
Kept j6p busy
While Geithner and Summers loot the taxpayer.
How many innocent people died by American hands during World War II?
ReplyDeleteI wholeheartedly agree Gryph....for terrorism is in the eye of the beholder~ which is the main problem I had when Bush invaded Iraq. They lost far more than we did ~ and how can we not expect repercussions down the road...?
ReplyDeletePhil, excellent comment...thank you.
ReplyDeletemidnightcajun,
ReplyDeleteAny more thoughts? Do you have a blog or a Stumbleupon account from which I may sup? Honesty and truth can be more precious than gold or water or family...
Gryphen - I agree wholeheartedly. I lose sleep knowing I can't do anything about it. It's hard living in the new world of information when you can't do anything about it. I think it will take a generation or two, but I have hope that the world will wake up - probably after I'm dead.

Ike said it was the Military/Industrial/CONGRESSIONAL complex we the people must watch out for. Even way back then our representatives were owned lock, stock, and barrel by corporate entities.
ReplyDeleteWell at least there are some people who know that the cause of terrorism is US murdering of people on the Arabian peninsula. This equates to the statement that 'the US had it coming on 9/11' but it took a long time for Americans to understand that.
ReplyDeleteOkay, all rhetoric and justification aside - exactly when did the United States Congress issue a Declaration of War on the country of Afghanistan?
