When you see more of something, doesn't THAT mean that their numbers are increasing? Not when it comes to Polar Bears!

In Nunavut, polar bears are wandering into towns, chasing children, poaching food from caches, and generally putting pressure on the people who call Northern Canada home. The increased instance of human-bear interactions, people in this region claim, is a sure sign that the polar bear population is increasing.

However, research suggests that a decreasing habitat is forcing stressed bears into territory they once left for humans.

Biologists working with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Anchorage, Alaska, have looked at 27 years of data from the U.S. Government Minerals Management Services. The trend that seems to emerge is that a decreasing habitat is related to an increase in polar bear sightings.

Between 1979 and 1987, 138 bears were spotted in the southern Beaufort Sea region of Alaska. This number increased dramatically, however, to 271 sightings between 1988 and 1996, and finally 468 sightings between 1997 and 2005. Moreover, the data shows that between 1979 and 1987, 12% of sightings were associated with no-ice conditions but between 1997 and 2005 90% of sightings were associated with no ice.

Polar bears are NOT the kind of animal that want to hang around with people. Unless those people are stranded on an ice floe. Only then may the bears temporarily change their policy.

If villagers are seeing an increase in polar bears it is clearly not because the bears are looking for some company. It is because they are starving, and their traditional method for finding food is failing them.

And yes that is the fault of human beings.

That photo brings tears to my eyes. It's horrific what we humans are doing to all other lifeforms on this planet. The Endangered, the innocent civilians we are killing in OUR WARS, etc.
Sometimes I wish the planet would spit us out like a poison, as history shows it HAS and CAN. We deserve no less.

this has always been my main complained about Palin....her total disregard for nature. I'm also dismayed at the stance of our Prim Minister. Like the poster ahead of me some of it brings me to tears.

Tea Party members come to MASS and work for Scott Brown.
We can beat the corrupt Clintonite, Martha Coakley for Ted's Senate seat.

Scott's vote in Senate will defeat HCR.
Great victory for America and the Tea Party.

Yes, Tea Party members, please do go to MASS and don't forget to go to confession as well. Give yourselves plenty of time, as I'm sure you will have a lot of penance to do. Just sayin'....

I agree Gryphen, hungry bears are gonna go in search of food, and it does not mean their numbers are increasing just because of sitings. They are adapting to change, as they have to.

That is a heartbreaking picture Gryphen... :(
Unfortunately the people who need to realize this won't...they will say Oh there are more bears, their not endangered! Idiots!
OT: the ocean of pea and elsewhere are getting a lot of mileage out of trashing the "john birch society" and how great that grandma grifter doesn't want to associate with them...lol! There's that pic when she is gov where she posed with a JB newsletter in a binder? Have they not seen that? She is a great friend to the JB society...
    idiots!!!!

  8. This is such a sad picture of what is going on and it boggles my mind that some can't see the importance of trying to stop the progression.

crystalwolf~I think $arah is trying to slam Glenn Blech by denouncing the JBS because of his reaction to her saying he's a hoot.
She certainly does seem to embody what they believe and Blech likes them. It's the only reason I can think of that she won't be at CPAC. Oh, and 'cuz they won't pay her and she is completely unelectable, also too.

Texas Parks and Wildlife every year allows more hunting permits for deer because they say there are more deer in their census every year.
Of course they never admit that 1) not body knows how many deer there were before the census began.
    2) nobody acknowledges that aerial counting did not exist in the 1840s or even 1940s.
    3) TPWL does not admit that deer habitat has been hugely diminished and populations compressed in to smaller and smaller isolated less advantageous areas.

So the mentality of approaching census counts for animals that people either enjoy killing for kicks or don't want around is extremely warped pretty much everywhere

  10. I grew up in a small lumber town in the Mtns of Northern CA - the Real N. CA (not SF - LOL) and whenever the winter had been bad - with little snow or rain, the bears would come to the town dump to forage - lots of them. Some even wandered into town. The difference was that we knew why they were coming and didn't try to claim there were record numbers of them like the climate deniers and Palin/Parnell administrations do in AK.

Starvation WILL drive animals to do things that are against their very nature.

    That picture breaks my heart.

    Thanks Gryphen!
