Here is a brief YouTube advertisement for "A Possible Dream: The Andrea Friedman Story.

Embedding is disabled so to see the video you need to click here.

It is striking how much this young woman has accomplished in her life with the support of her loving parents and the help from professionals who helped her to not be identified simply by her limitations but to push those limits until she could achieve as much as possible.

Already the Palin-bots have started to suggest that Andrea does not have the mental capacity to compose this e-mail.

i don't think this 40 year old down's syndrome woman wrote this or formulated these political opinions. my guess is that she is being used a political pawn, to accuse governor palin of using her infant son as a political pawn.

What has been "set straight"? So you thought the line was funny. Millions didn't. Get over it. You still get paid. The only thing this "sets straigh" is that Andrea doesn't mind being exploited by script writers, and her own family, for their political biases. Read the last sentence again. As they say, "you are what you hate"...

Unfortunately Andrea may mind if she understood the complicated political arena she has been pushed into by her dad who set up this gig for her.We need to protect out special needs community not use them as pawns... and no, Sarah carrying her infant son in public or private does not make him a pawn.

in any event what does the friedman letter prove no matter who wrote it. only one family was being made fun of in the cartoon and that was the palin family. now if the friedman family was made fun of in the same way then i would care what they thought but until then i would rather hear from bristol and what she thought.

Perhaps the person who composed the above e-mail was not aware of Andrea's educational background:

EDUCATION
Pre-School: Santa Monica Presbyterian Nursery School, Santa Monica
Elementary: Seeds University Elementary School at UCLA, Los Angeles

Junior High: Fernald School at UCLA
ERAS School, Los Angeles
High School: West Los Angeles Baptist High School, Los Angeles
College: Santa Monica College, Santa Monica

(You can read more about Andrea's accomplishments here.)

The real lesson to learn here (and I certainly hope that somebody will bring it to Sarah Palin's attention) is that children who are born with certain challenges should not be defined by them. They can achieve amazing things and live a satisfying life filled with wonderful experiences and as much normalcy as any other person on this planet.

Sarah Palin DOES drag Trig around as a prop. There are literally dozens of photos of him without his much needed glasses and hearing aids, not to mention his damn socks! These are the years when he is gathering data, and making sense of the world around him. That ability is diminished badly if he cannot see or hear appropriately.

Does anybody think that Andrea could have achieved ALL that she has if her parents did not give her the loving care and tools she needed to see and hear the world around her? The obvious answer is no.

So who better to speak up for Trig Palin than this woman who shares his diagnosis, yet is living proof of how full his life can be with the proper support and educational opportunities?

What's funny about people thinking that Andrea could not compose her letter by herself is that if Sarah had her name at the end of the letter we would be saying the same thing about Sarah.

It is a fact Sarah is not capable of writing or speaking.

Andrea is pure at heart and mind and she is God's child plus her education is documented and I am not sure about Sarah's education.

    You rock Andrea!

Andrea is smarter, better educated, and more erudite in her speech than Sarah, and this is not a dig: this is merely the facts.

I now wait for Andrea's parents to tell the world what they have observed in Sarah's parenting of Trig, and how they raised Andrea differently. I can't fathom that Trig will have any of the opportunities that Andrea had to grow and reach his maximum capacity, no matter how much slush money Sarah is able to raise – because the required parental effort and know-how will simply never be there for him. Sarah has three strike-outs with regard to her 'ability' to raise her three oldest, normal children, not counting the huge strike-out she has made with respect to her own life. I can't fathom what a mess she will make of Trig.

Now that Bristol is coming out of her shell, she can begin to school us in her success with abstinence. This is a subject she can discuss in public, no more hiding behind Facebook like the quitter gov. No doubt the tantalizing Candies Foundation will put her right out front. They all care so deeply about teens who need shoes and the impact of unwed preganancies on society. Come on Bristol, talk to us and show us you have an IQ.

The American Civil Liberties Union has filed suit against the US Agency for International Development (USAID) to compel the release of documents relating to its overseas abstinence-only programs, which are funded through HIV/AIDS grants.
" It then goes on to note that "abstinence-only-until-marriage instruction fails to provide youth with the tools they need to make healthy decisions. Indeed, providing information about and access to condoms is crucial in preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS, and withholding this information can cause serious harm to young people."
"In the face of a growing global HIV/AIDS crisis, USAID is not only violating basic constitutional principles by promoting government-funded religious activities," ACLU attorney Rose Saxe stated, "it is unconscionably putting young people's health and lives at risk."

Bristol is busy with her impending custody and visitation problems due to her situation with Levi Johnston, but never too busy for her most passionate causes. Come out of the shadows, Bristol, we want to hear from you, not your mommy'c ghost writers.

P.S. Bristol, you signed off on this.
Bristol made a mistake, it was not about her "brother." She needs to make a correction or be a forever heartless jerk that puts down an accomplished actor who clearly and succinctly writes her own statements.

The sheeple are such a classy lot, aren't they? Do they think attacking Ms. Friedman is a good thing?

If there is one person who deserves to have the podium and her views heard it is Ms. Friedman. The teabaggers prove that they have the disposition of toddlers when they cannot tolerate the dissenting opinion of even Ms. Friedman without lashing out with aprobrium and scorn.

When they attack Ms. Friedman with their snotty invective merely for having the audacity to disagree with them, the teabaggers betray that they are indeed absolutely devoid of even vestigial traces of human decency.

Not only is this conduct loathsome and cowardly, it is remarkably hypocritical. The teabagger lot nearly swoons when Palin drags out little Trig like a football, only to be quickly lateraled to some flunky after the “oohs” and “awwws” subside. Teabaggers celebrate that Palin had the courage of conviction to not abort Trig (as if she could have done so with someone else’s pregnancy), because Trig is a child of God and a DS child’s life holds as much meaning as any other. Unless, of course, you are a Down Syndrome child of God named Andrea Friedman who is uppity enough to assert herself in opposition to matters of great consequence to Goober Nation. They would relegate Ms. Friedman mute and consign her to the basement where she belongs. I guess once DS children grow and are no longer babies, they cease being cute fashion accessories and should neither be seen nor heard.

I believe that there is a very special place in hell that Sarah Palin has reserved for herself because of the way she is neglecting Trig’s very real and special needs. What a bitch.

Teabaggers are odious turds one and all.

Hasn't the writer if that letter done just what Palin claims to be complaining about.
The writer basically said Friedman was too dumb to appreciate or understand what she was doing.

In trying to support the unsupportable Sarah she dis'd a woman with DS - solely becsuse that woman has DS, by presuming that Ms Friedman is to dumb to get it.

So my question to the writer of that comment is - Who is the retard here? I count two of them and neither has DS.

That is the sad mentality of Palin and her supporters. The fact that they and Sarah have no expectations of Trig will limit him in his quality of life. He should not have to grow up around this negative family. Andrea should have been seen as an inspiration by the Palin's, but they are too jealous, hateful and selfish to appreciate her accomplishments.

Sarah may be stupid enough to comment along with her followers, but it shows nasty and mean she is and may just bring her down.

There have been several other articles about Palin this week. It's not that she is such a joke anymore, I think everyone is getting bored with her.

If she pulls another rant to stay in the spotlight, it just might due her in. Can't wait.

  15. "Does anybody think that Andrea could have achieved ALL that she has if her parents did not give her the loving care and tools she needed to see and hear the world around her? The obvious answer is no."

That is entirely as it should be. And the sad part is that the same sort of loving care and tools should be provided by EVERY parent according to the needs of EACH individual child.

Allowing societal stereotypes and myths to make decisions about a child's potential, is in my mind criminal.

As the parent of a fully autistic son in his 40s who is currently serving his country in a very responsible position and with a perfect record thus far (16 years and counting), I clearly understand that a diagnosis of full-blown autism does not guarantee that the child cannot function in the world; the same goes for Down Syndrome and many other congenital conditions. If one has no expectations for a child, how is he ever to attain his potential?

Sarah the Lunk simply assumes her child is retarded, that he has no long-term potential (she also seems to think that he has no sense of ambient temperature or need for a sense of security in being held). It follows then that in her mind he won't really benefit from being best able to process the world around him, so why she she bother? She really ought to educate herself about Down Syndrome....but she won't. He is the perfect attention-getter and sympathy-assurance, at the least, and she is not going to spend that much time on anyone but herself: she has demonstrated that how many times now?

She is consigning him to a sordid life of dependence instead of a full and happy future. Yes, criminal.

  16. Reading the disparaging comments from the Palin types makes me physically sick because they are incapable of addressing this and praising Andrea's abilities. They will get rid of her by putting her in their slot and besmirching her. How convenient to forget what Andrea's early education means. It is better for them to keep the attention off of Bristol's custody and court manipulations and give her a fake outrage, I suppose. Where was Bristol outrage when Trig was half naked in freezing cold weather, exposed to bacteria and on an erratic intense schedule? Why doesn't she care about his hearing and sight? We hear her son, Tripp, collects his medical care at government/taxpayers expense. That makes it likely that Tripp has the same benefit. I don't understand why they do not care to treat Trig. The family needs to explain their positions in these matters.

What I hate the most of all is that the Palins never let the little guy walk in public. Any parent knows that babies are so pleased with themselves when they get up on their hind legs they have to be prevented from running full-pelt.

When a new group starts theraputic riding, there are eager riders and hopeful parents. At the end of the year, there are skilled riders walking and trotting their mounts in school figures and proud parents smilingly flicking away the odd tear.

And in that journey, for all involved, there is the endless re-education in the principle that there are only INDIVIDUALS with challenges, not pre-determined limitations. Generalizations about any disabilities are so unwarranted. It is the individuals, above all, that deserve the respect they have so richly earned.

Andrea is not exploited. Trig is.

Among other things, Johnston said Palin joked about her son Trig's Down Syndrome, calling him her "retarded baby."

'I was just in shock the first time I heard it,' he said, when host Maggie Rodriguez expressed disbelief. He also said Bristol took care of the baby much more than her mother: 'Sarah was never home.'

Johnston also said that Todd and Sarah would fight in front of their kids." 10-27-09

Sarah and Bristol were outraged at selective targets. The fact that they did not denounce Rush Limbaugh for the same thing makes their outrage very selective.

What Rush does is not satire. He spews hate, and makes fun of the disabled. Some time ago, he not only made fun of Michael J. Fox's disability, he made herky-jerky motions, making fun of people with Parkinson's disease. He accused Fox of not taking his medication before a TV interview so Fox's symptoms would appear worse and there gain more sympathy for him. That is not satire. That is not true. It is a big fat drug abusing bully making fun of someone with a medical condition. (Rush's obesity is not a medical condition; he eats and drinks too much. As for being a drug abuser, he sent his maid out to buy oxycontin, and Rush was caught with a suitcase full of viagra. Medical condition, really!)

Attention Sarah: Outrage for one, outrage for all. You cannot select the targets. Anyone who makes fun of the disabled should be called out, not just the people you don't like.

And, it might be a good idea to stop playing the victim and take on the role of advocate for the disabled, especially Down syndrome. Instead of blaming people, turn it into a teachable moment. But, that would be noble and selfless, something that Sarah is incapable of doing and feeling. She only feels outrage. And tells Bristol to tell the ghostwriter to make it good!

In truth, Sarah continues to use Trig as a prop, this time for cheap publicity. Stop using the kid and get him some therapy!

  26. An article in Gawker clearly explains the Family Guy 'former governor of AK' joke.

"...the best part about Friedman's response was also the point—such as there was one—of the Family Guy gag: Palin used Trig so blatantly as a campaign tool, and positions herself so squarely as the voice of the disabled community (see: "death panels"), that of course the one person with Down syndrome to appear in the Family Guy episode would be related to her"."

I wish Trig had a family that understood his potential and put in the effort to help him achieve it. I wish Levi would speak up for him.

Patience...what a powerful word. We who have children have learned it is so necessary raising our children! It often takes forever to see any reward...remember the mutiplication tables? Parents with handicapped children may never live long enough to see the outcome. Many parents are older with DS children and don't get that privilage. Can you imagine the Palins having patience? They want instant gratification with the least effort...money, fame, toys at everyone else's expense. Patience to work with a DS child just isn't in their genes. If Trig is to ever achieve any normalcy, there is going to have to be an intervention on his behalf for him ever to reach any growth. The Palins and their bots haven't a clue! If not, Trig will never progress, and remain the handicapped little guy we now see and end up in an institution with the others who were never given the help and patience they needed. But their other children will be just as hindered if they don't find the strength to do it on their own. I pity them all.

I agree with much of what Gryph wrote. As someone who has lived in a family with several people with a disability, I would like to suggest a different attitude on one statement:

PRIOR POST: They can achieve amazing things and live a satisfying life filled with wonderful experiences and as much normalcy as any other person on this planet.

I agree that some can achieve amazing things. I hope people recognize that some can't - Just like with average (as opposed to normal) people. Many can have wonderful experiences - Their lives are probably not as "normal" as any other person. Good things can be learned from and by people with challenges. On the whole however, life is harder. Oftentimes a lot harder. And it can hurt not only the person who is challenged, but others in the family, particularly siblings -or children if the parent has a disability. It's not fair. IN fact, it stinks. But it happens. a lot. I think we should support and encourage people with challenges. (I could write another post on how that is a lot harder for hte family than most people think, but I'll save that for another soapbox.) But I don't think we should expect normalcy if we just love and work hard enough.
I applaud Gryph for recognizing the respect and integrity due to people with challenges. I sometimes cringe, perhaps prematurely, when people make it sound somehow inspiring or noble or some other feel good thing. Oftentimes it sucks. But you cope, and learn, and help others, and move on with life as it was dealt to you. And always good things can come of it - which is not the same thing as "all things work for the good,: or "it's all good" or "you too can achieve great things if you just try and reach for the stars." (reaching for the stars is a good thing, but it doesn't mean you can catch a star - fortunately, it's the journey, not the ultimate destination, that counts.

I've been following this story for the last two days. I have a disabled (or, to be politically correct, "challenged") child with severe hearing and vision impairments. I know firsthand the benefits of glasses and hearing aids in the first MONTHS of a child's life and continuing from there. I'm far more offended by the fact that Palins don't seem to find it necessary to provide even these basic necessities to Trig on a regular basis.

As far as their pretend outrage about the "Family Guy" segment, I just don't get it. I wish someone would ask, straight out, "And what, specifically, is offensive to Trig and his family about that scene?" Unless they think that someone with Down Syndrome should not be allowed in public or in a restaurant, then I just don't get it.

I am saying this as a person who never watched an entire episode of "Family Guy." I don't like their brand of humor, from what little I've seen of it. Nevertheless, after watching this scene, I simply cannot find anything with which to take issue. It simply shows a guy on a date with a girl who happens to have Down Syndrome, nothing more. This is actually portraying exactly what so many parents have had to FIGHT to achieve for their children in school--mainstreaming! Proving they can function just like anyone else.

SP: Explain yourself---exactly WHAT happened in this scene that was offensive to the families of special needs kids? You and Bristol seem to have found some hidden meaning that no other parent of a special needs child with whom I have communicated recognizes. Come on, share with us SPECIFICALLY what has you so outraged?

On a different note, I'd like to add that not every special needs child will grow up to achieve as much as Andrea Friedman, no matter how good the parenting and early interventions. However, if we don't provide those interventions early and regularly, then we can be sure our children will not meet their full potential. My child has achieved more than some and less than others---but I'm at peace knowing that we did everything we could to maximize the opportunity to advance. Even if a child is capable of only very limited progress, that progress can make an enormous difference in the quality of life he/she will enjoy.

The Palin freaks are unbelievable. They don't accept that Ms. Friedman has Down syndrome because she's articulate, smart, and independent. They probably still believe that people with Down syndrome are carted off to institutions, where they are lobotomized. Their warped, bigoted beliefs reveal much about their own limitations. Someone please explain to them that you don't advance in society by following behind an inept, barely literate narcissist. You don't progress in a free society by denigrating education, marching around with Hitler signs, and believing that white skin trumps brains and knowledge. Thank goodness America is still composed of people like Andrea Friedman and President Obama--real Americans.

My son offers more joy in my life than and "normal" person does...everyday is new and bright and happy...I know that the first 5 years are the most important as far as development goes..It breaks my heart to see that sweet little boy not getting the care and therapy that he needs.

Mz Palin needs to worry less about stirring hate and worry more about working with her special needs child to get him started on the right foot....

Having an intelligent discussion with a Palinbot is like having an intelligent conversation with a head of lettuce - it's impossible.

Who pays Andrea Freeman? For her "Family Guy" gig it was Fox, or Newscorp. Same company that pays Palin. Irony.

Palin will never be an "advocate" for the disabled unless she can make a shit pot of money at it and make money off appearances with Trig.

  49. Sarah Palin is selling Trig short, way short, every day and with every rant she makes.

Sarah Palin, if you truly had a heart or truly believed Trig was a gift from your G-d... if you were half the mother or teacher to him that so many other women are for their children ... Trig would have half a chance to reach his unique potential.

Because you don't and you aren't... your claimed son Trig may as well be dumped in an institution where he gets only basic necessities of life. Only you and your grand extended family can provide what Trig really needs. In a word, it is not to be dragged around to your staged pro-life events as some kind of badge.

I feel a deep sadness for Trig, and a terrific scorn for you because of how little you truly care for him.

Shame on you, Sarah Palin. And shame on your blind, deaf and dumb minions who don't see what is happening to this child as a result of him being in your care.

Below is a one of Palin's minions expressing his erudite and compassionate opinion of Andrea:
    -------------------------------
    " + Duffer1 I'm a Fan of Duffer1 I'm a fan of this user 5 fans permalink
Andrea Fay....the poster child for stupid and don't even know it. You can lead a dog around on a leash too! Bowwww Wowwww or is it Moooooo.

This is so much fun making fun of people and their handicap children. Maybe FG will do an episode on an epileptic choking on their tongue. Now that would be a hoot wouldn't it! You go FG....you represent the majority of the people on HP......but not me!"
    ----------------------------

This illustrates perfectly why reasonable folks cannot have a mature debate about anything with the likes of Palinbots.

isn't it interesting that the palinbots seem to think that this woman couldn't possibly think or act for herself because of her down syndrome? clearly it is THEY who are the retards!

and the more I think about it, the more I think that palin is a perfect example of a retard. I've always thought she was in a state of arrested development (as evidenced by her juvenile reaction to things) and that fits the definition of retard to a T. palin is mentally and emotionally retarded.

  52. She speaks better then Paylin. I saw her on a show one of the Law and Order take offs. She was a good actress.

One of my teachers said we live up to our parents expectation. It doesn't take a rocket science to know this.

I have seen no love shown by Paylin. She hands him over to Piper as if he is a burden. I simply do not see the love of a mother in her eyes. I wish I were wrong.

I just read a comment on another blog and it said that Andrea has “Up Syndrome” not “Down Syndrome”.

That is a beautiful positive thought...

May God bless Andrea and her parents for raising such a strong beautiful young lady =D

  54. It's been my distinct pleasure and privilege to have known a few people with Down Syndrome in my life. One of them was an especially talented young artist who attended mainstream schools throughout her life and was never treated as "handicapped" by her family, teachers or her many friends and admirers. What she DID receive from those people was more than the average amount of hands-on parenting and teaching to help her utilize her abilities as fully as possible. Her mother stopped working during her early childhood because parenting a child with Down Syndrome well is a full time job. Had this child been dragged behind her mother in her mother's quest for a career, I doubt she would have grown into the fine and accomplished young woman she is today. People with Down Syndrome have huge hearts and dreams and are often so trusting and emotionally open that they're more vulnerable to the slings and arrow of cruel people. Luckily, they are also very forgiving and loving people. Down Syndrome is sometimes so severe as to be debilitating, but is more often (as Ms. Friedman so eloquently put it) a series of challenges to be dealt with and overcome. The challenges, however, cannot be met by the person with Down Syndrome alone, which is why the parents of Down children so often say that they learned so much and gained more than they gave in parenting these wonderful people. The difference in the outcome for Down children is very often the attention to those special needs at the most formative stages of childhood. This does not bode well for Trig Palin, whose mother has never shown the ability or even the willingness to put anyone's needs ahead of her own ... or find anyone special but herself.

  55. It's remarkable how many Down syndrome experts there are in the Teabagger party qualified to analyze the abilities of an adult woman with Down syndrome, whom they have never met, from long distance. Like most disorders that result in developmental delays, there is a huge spectrum of severity in impairment with Down syndrome from profoundly impaired to mildly impaired. Some of it is nature and some of it is nurture. We are not provided with details of the nature of Andrea's disorder, but we sure got a glimpse of the positive nurturing she receives. We don't know much about the nature of Trig's impairment, either, but so far the nurturing is certainly questionable. Once he is no longer a valuable political prop, the Palin's have been very clear on their negative perception of Down syndrome and their belief that is a a tragic, serious liability. That does not bode well for this poor child.
