According to the San Francisco Chronicle:
Sarah Palin is expected to raise nearly $200,000 for an appearance on a California State University campus in June. But the school foundation hosting the $500-a-plate event won't say what they are paying her, or even how much the party will cost - and that has angered a San Francisco lawmaker who is using the opportunity to push his bill for greater transparency by public university foundations.
"The CSU should immediately disclose how much money is being diverted from students to pay Sarah Palin's exorbitant speaking fees," said state Sen. Leland Yee, D-San Francisco, who has been trying to pass a law that would extend the California Public Records Act to those foundations.
"At a time when students are struggling to afford an education at CSU, I would hope that spending potentially hundreds of thousands of dollars on a guest speaker for a black-tie gala would be low on the priority list," Yee said in a statement issued Monday.
Lillian Taiz, president of the California Faculty Association, which represents CSU instructors, said Yee is right to push for full disclosure of Palin's fee.
"It just seems like an odd choice for a university," Taiz said. "If you want a moneymaker, why not Paris Hilton? She has about as much academic value and would probably bring even more money, if that's the goal." (Ahh truer words were never spoken.)
You know if I was actually ignorant enough to pay Sarah Palin to give a speech in a room full of educated people I would be too embarrassed to talk about it too.
However I have to agree with Senator Lee on this one. Why is it a secret how much money is being denied the students to pay Sarah Palin to come onto campus and kill braincells with her high pitched caterwauling?
And really how much money could they possibly be clearing if they expect to only raise $200,000 for the gig? I mean after they pay her $100,000 speaking fee, several thousand for the plane tickets to get her, Piper, possibly Todd, and a half dozen members of her Wasilla entourage to California, another few thousand for accomodations, and then pay for the damages done to the campus windows and alumni hearing aids after they are subjected to her sonic screeching which could sterilize lab rats at 500 yards, there won't be any money left for the school!.
Personally I think the school is making a huge mistake. And if you agree then head on over to this Facebook page called "Sarah Palin, Terrible Choice for 50th Anniversary of CSU Stanislaus" where you and other lovers of intellectual discourse can express your outrage.
Or you could call this number (209) 667-3131 to express your feelings directly. (However you will not get an answer until Thursday since the campus is closed tomorrow in observance of Cesar Chavez day. You just can't make this stuff up!)
What the hell are they thinking?
ReplyDeleteI perfectly agree with the lawmaker protesting.
ReplyDeleteAnd his Paris Hilton comment was bang on target, except for some condescending tone towards Paris Hilton. She deserved better, recalling the manner in which she zinged the McCain campaign about Obama being just a celebrity.

I'm a long time reader of IM who happens to be a CSU Stanislaus '94 alumni (I'm a Turkey Tech grad and proud of it!). I'm just as stumped as everyone else as to why she's coming here! I get invites to every fundraiser and event going on at CSUS and it's very strange that I haven't received a single letter or phone call about the event. It doesn't surprise me though, considering the huge amount of republican dollars in our dairy/farming community. I'd venture to guess that this event is targeted to the Ag community as a political event rather than a fundraiser... because I guarantee faculty and students are NOT Sarah supporters!!! The thought of her being less than 20 miles from my house sickens me....
ReplyDeleteMichelle Obama spoke at commencement for UC Merced last May. She took no fee but the University spent $1.04 million on costs associated with her speech.
ReplyDeleteJust seeing Palin's name along side the word University is staggering enough.
ReplyDeletePerhaps the good people of CA will protest this beast just as the good people of Canada did to Ann Coulter.
Worth a try.
$500.00 a plate... really? Does it come with a paper-mach shaped like an AK-47?
Hurray for CA Senator Yee and CA Faculty Assn. Pres. Taiz. I hope they are able to get the speaking fee disclosed.
ReplyDeleteI hope, also, that the students whose academic careers are endangered by rising fees and declining services picket the poop out of the event, if the event takes place.
Sarah is so desperate to get creds anywhere she can get them. Unfortunately, there are just enough totally callous organization decision makers willing to help her.
So, go Yee and Taiz, go get Sarah's fees disclosed so the students can shut this outrage down.
Sarah doesn't deserve to make this kind of money anywhere, but to make it at a university where intelligent kids are really trying to learn and better their lives, well . . . Sarah go home, go somewhere, but stay away from smart folks. They will eat you for an appetizer.
Tell all your FaceBook users to sign up for this FaceBook to keep her out of CA.
ReplyDelete700+ Members the first day and Almost 1400 now. Hopefully the College will get the message and we can keep her out of CA. Anybody you know who has College age kids... make sure it is forwarded to them. Email the College too.

As I recall, just a few weeks ago, California students were protesting huge increases in tuition.
ReplyDeleteHave a feeling that when these CSU kids get wind of the $$$,$$$.$$ going to Mrs. I. Got Mine, FU Palin, instead of offsetting tuition costs, there just may be an 8.0 registering on the college campus Ricter Scale.
Unlike Alaska, in California, the climate is always perfect for outdoor student protests...and the kids aren't afraid to show up, stand up and when necessary draw a line in the sand if/when a greedy grifter rolls in and tries to empty their education funding coffer into her bottomless pit of ignorance.
The students at CSU Stanislaus should take their cue from the students at The University of Ottawa and how they greeted Ann Coulter. Let Sarah Palin understand how intense is the opposition to her. She crows mightily about her own free speech rights without ever acknowledging that the students can lay claim to those same rights as well.
ReplyDeleteWTF were the powers that be at CSU Stanislaus smoking? Must be a bunch of old geezers who get their very infrequent deliveries of wood from Sarah Palin personally.
Well, $carah is THE expert on Agriculture! Remember...she got rid of the old board, brough in her experts who "claimed" they had found a million $ worth of savings within weeks. Then they claimed a $60,000 profit in one month. Then 18 days later they had to admit to losing $320,000 in ONE month. Kristan Cole was in charge (Palin's BFF), the largest loss in the history of Mat Maid. So....experts....not so much. BUT, I am sure $carah will be fabulous to listen to! And ONLY $500! What a friggin' joke. Moooo!
ReplyDeletehonestyinGov, thank you for that link. When I read this article this morning I was floored. I would like to know who made this decision.
ReplyDeleteOk, so it turns out the fundraiser is NOT a CSU Stanislaus University sponsored event after all... The CSU Foundation is a private entity that oversees the private gifts to the university. I read an article on Turlock Journal's website that had all the details (I don't know how to link).
ReplyDeletestill, the whole thing pisses me off! That money should have gone to the scholarship program or to the new building or something that benefits the university as a whole- especially in these economic times
First, Paris Hilton is probably light years more intelligent than Sarah.
ReplyDeleteI hope if this money is wasted on the Snowflake Grifter, many of CSU's donors will find a more worthy cause to support financially next year.
What a coup for CSU!!--imagine bringing a noted anti-intellectual to a college campus to toss syntax-challenged, 5-watt, ESL word salad. LOL
How hilarious! What a model of intellectual excellence! LOL
ReplyDeleteThe public has a right to know what that sleazy foundation is doing.
Maybe she'll pull Piper out of school to be her security blanket again...someone's gotta help with the big words.
Sarah Palin and academics is like having a child molester visit a day care center.
ReplyDeletePlus, Paris Hilton has better grammar than Sarah.
ReplyDeleteBwahahahahaha! I just finished watching the season premier of V, and came to IM for my pre-bedtime fix. What's the almost-first-thing I see? Why the photo of our Sarah with the uncanny resemblance to the final frame of V's Anna!!! Not gonna spoil it, so you'll have to check it out for yourselves. Gryph, you'll pee yourself laughing - guaranteed!!!
ReplyDeleteMelangell Mudpuppy
Hey CSU Stanislaus, I can do one better than Palin! I will charge you ONLY $50K for the same speech she gives.
ReplyDeleteReady? Here we go, "Dead fish go with the flow, how's that hopey changey thing, Obama and the rest of you... you are fired, kickin it old school poor man's teleprompter"!
NOW PAY ME MY MONEY!
On target, imnofred.
ReplyDeleteI hope Sarah is safe down there in California. We went for a tour with our daughter at UC Santa Cruz in November, and the students had just finished doing something like $50,000 in damage during a protest against price increases.
ReplyDeleteOf course there was a rather large group protesting and causing that much damage. Total amateurs compared to the likes of Willow. bt
If the CSU Stanislaus Foundation Chairman, Matt Swanson stated, "I've had people call and say, ‘We don't like her, but we're still going to pay to come,’" it makes me wonder if some locals are snapping up tickets as a two-fer. You get to see a three-headed monkey (chattahbox.com) and support CSU Stanislaus in one evening. Or perhaps there’ll be heckling inside the gala as well as protesting outside of it.

Okay, I'm starting to think this is a set-up. Sounds like those Stanislaus Foundation guys want Sarah to come and be the cause of a big ole California University Student Brawl/Protest.
ReplyDeleteSarah and her entourage should definitely buy up all the tomatoes in a 40 mile radius before showing up. Of course it's CA so that could be a lot of tomatoes. And pies too.
This campus is in Turlock Ca which in 1930s was in Ripley's believe it or not for having the largest number of churches per capita, just to give you an idea.
ReplyDeleteHere is a post in the Turlock Journal's truthseekers blog:
"It is also questionable to have a speaker who doesn’t support higher education. She refers to people who seek a higher education as “elitist”. She has supported higher education in Alaska by means of “vocational training”, not traditional higher education. One has to wonder if there might not have been a more suitable speaker than one who left her elected position prior to completing her term in order to make money by giving speeches, and considers higher education elitist."
Wow just Wow! A person on FB Barracuda got this connection to
ReplyDelete"Sam's purse"!!!!!!!
Barracuda Radley THIS IS HOE mSpAYLIN RECEIVED THE INVITATION TO SPEAK AT YOUR SCHOOL....ETHICS PROBLEM HERE....CONFLICT OF INTEREST V
Well, it didn’t take much of an internet search to discover that
surprise, surprise, this ties to Samaritan’s Purse.
a) Matt Swanson is president of the university foundation which
extended the invitati...on, and has been the spokesperson on this event so
far
b) Mr. Swanson is on the Executive Team of the Central Valley Harvest
Crusade, per http://www.harvest.org/crusades/2007/central-valley/index.php/190/193.html
Harvest Crusade is an evangelistic organization founded by Greg
Laurie.
c) Greg Laurie is on the board of directors of Samaritan’s Purse
Samaratin's Purse and Ms Paylin are associated , so they are feeding more monies to Ms PAylin through this association Mr Swanson should be asked to step down through this conflict of interest since he is associated with Mr Laurie

I thought it was clear that she gets $75,000 for west coast appearances so that is what she is getting, unless they would like to tell us a different number.
ReplyDeleteThey gotta show her the money--or NO WORD SALAD! You just can't get that kind of half-baked Alaska for nothin', ya know!
