Sarah Palin may not have done as well on the Tonight Show as we were led to believe.

I’ve dealt with sound engineering for 30 years, as a film maker, interviewer, musician, working with master reel to reel tapes/decks at EMS Music in Seattle in the 80’s as a sound duplication engineer, or setting sound levels for my and other bands in live situations at shows. I won a Hollywood award for animation in 2000. I know sound. And it’s my opinion that audio portions of Sarah Palin’s March 2nd appearance on Jay Leno’s Tonight show were added or amplified, edited before broadcast to make it appear that Sarah Palin was more welcome than she was.

I know. I was there.

They added laughter where there was none during uncomfortable portions. Well, there was some laughter. Mine, of derision. During those pregnant pauses in her performance I was laughing long and loud, couldn’t help myself as much of what she was saying was utterly surreal, ridiculous, hypocritical - nonsense, spewed platitudes, pushed buttons. I was seriously thinking of leaving as it was getting hysterically unfunny.

After sitting through the taping of the show in the studio I can recount many portions where there was little or no laughter or response, but at the later broadcast they are smoothed over with applause and laughter that WERE NOT THERE at the taping. Groans, hoots, grumbling, or just dead silence - all missing.

Well now isn't THAT interesting?

You know I wondered how Palin was able to elicit such big laughs from an audience that I assumed was probably made up of mostly progressives. This fellow's explanation certainly makes sense.

From my seat to the right of the stage, by the band, I could tell that an average of 70% of the audience did not like Sarah Palin. Many literally sat on their hands. This is LA and I wondered when we went in, just how many people would be into Palin here. C’mon, this is LA, man! Make no mistake, the national figure for nutjobs were represented, the same insane 30% of the country that always believe in racism, GWBush, War, Torture, the Libertarians, Teabaggers were there too, and quite vocal. Throw in a shotgun microphone and you’ve got yourself a laugh riot with these guys.

Now in the interest of full disclosure it should probably be noted that this guy is NOT a Palin fan, and in fact he and his wife created the “Going Rouge: The Sarah Palin Rogue Coloring & Activity Book”.

However that alone does not insinuate that he is a liar. In fact, using my own personal measuring tool for determining if a person is lying, the very fact that he reports the opposite of what Sarah Palin wants us to believe virtually assures that he is being honest.

Check out this guy's description of what Sarah's stage presence looked like from the audience and decide for yourself if it does not jive with other times you have seen Palin in front of a live audience.

Jay came out to raucous applause, hell, we clapped too, I like the guy, not as much as Letterman or Connan but I’m a comedy fan, and some of the show as funny. Shaun White was way cool, funny, authentic, there multiple ovations, and Adam Lambert ROCKED the house, as the latest and future incarnation of David Bowie. Lots of fun.

But when Jay brought out Sarah Palin, she was completely nerved. Watch the video, check out her breathing, she’s Freaked and talks a mile a minute. Both my wife and I agreed - when you actually get close enough, she’s just plain Creepy, and those yech vibes filled the room. Nevermind the applause sign - something that’s a staple of late night shows.

Now as somebody who has witnessed a number of Sarah Palin speeches first hand, this rings very true. Even while giving her speech in front of her hometown crowd she was often frantic, with her voice changing pitch in the oddest places throughout her speech.

Now what I am REALLY interested in is whether having the Tonight Show technicians put a positive spin on the audience reaction was part of her deal for showing up. And whether that is also the case when she appears on other programs.

If true it absolutely guarantees she will never do a David Letterman show, or sit with John Stewart, or even Stephen Colbert. THEY would never provide cover for her on their shows. And I have NO doubt that Palin would never expose herself to their hostile audiences without some protection.

And speaking of protection check out what our friend says about Palin's security.

The basic rules for the studio audience were simple: NO Eating, NO drinking and NO shouting anything out. Other than that, knock yourselves out, have a good time. Yet, judging by the Security surrounding the stage where Palin brought the Silly, shouting out, “Hey Sarah, How many wolf puppies have you gassed?!” would have been suicidal.

What the hell is she so frightened about?

"Hey Sarah! Liberals don't use violence! You don't have to fear us. The only thing we would assault you with is the tru......oh....now I get it! I guess in Sarah's world truth is the scariest weapon of all."

(Just click the title to read the rest of Michael Stinson's very interesting post.)

Update: The "Take back the Media" site is down so my title link will not work right now. But if you want to read the whole article you are in luck because somebody posted the whole thing over at the Daily Kos.

I saw the tape several times on various shows...until I read your post it didn't resonate with me that I keep hearing a woman very loudly guffawing, for want of a better word...everything the Quitter said, it was the same guffawing...now it makes perfect sense.

I, too, could not imagine an LA crowd giving this chick such adoration...now we now they didn't.

  4. Thus is my favorite, and it was kind of hard to choose, part:

You've cracked the code. From Agnew to Liz Cheney, this is the trick. Too bad it still has escaped our Liberal Media.

I honestly, really thought of this angle when I heard the "audience" react to her lame comments with wild applause and laughter. It does sound overdubbed if you listen closely; some of the timing seems weird. I believe him.

Wish this little bit of useful dynamite would make it to the MSM, but I guess the big bucks behind Creepella will assure that it won't. The Powers That Be will use the amped-up Leno show as proof that she has the chops to carry a reality show. Hey, look what a reality show did for the Gosselins! Whatever--just keep her far, far away from the WH.

  10. Wow, powerful. I read the whole thing. Looking at clips, I thought something was odd about the sound, the laughter was too raucous. This is a sham. I would love to hear the original, the silence. I thought that they would never add laughter to a live guest. Leno is a liar, I will never watch his show.

I will never watch Leno again. It is over the top to think audience reaction is technically manipulated to this extent. The only thing that makes me feel better about this situation is SP must know she is riding the crest of the wave. It's over, she is milking the $$ to the bitter end.

years ago I had been to an older taping of the Tonight Show (yeah really old okay- it was Johnny Carson!)
I remember seeing those damn applause signs blinking feverishly... it was really annoying, because in the back of my mind, if your not funny I don't laugh or clap.
But in the Curious Case of Benjamin Palin... I would have been rolling in the isles with laughter.

I'm glad we got this cleared up! Outside the throngs inspired by a highly staged and stylized GOP backed national campaign, beyond her manicured and manufactured book store and speaking engagements, she truly is a flop to the 70% or so normal Americans.

Thanks to Michael, Julie and Gryphen!

Do networks still have ombudsman-like public relations folks? Can we lodge a complaint somewhere it can be investigated and make a difference?

I know our paper used to have an employee who was deemed independent in order to field and investigate readers' complaints and could then write up his/her findings and make the newspaper apologize.

If this mechanism doesn't exist for Leno's network, it should.

The Bush administration so corrupted the FCC that I doubt any complaints lodged there would mean anything.

Yet thanks again for the insights. Hopefully, someone with MSM muscle will take this on and get the dirty laundry aired.

I am interested in Sarah's new pitch for a reality show, which will have Sarah act as our native tour guide as she shows us around Alaska.

So, how is that different from Deadliest Catch, Ice Road Truckers, and all of those other near-disaster shows, that really aren't 100% disaster because there is a camera crew, trucks with food and other people standing by.

Do you think that she will return to the First Americans with another plate of cookies while explaining their native culture?

(I remember watching a reality show called Miami Ink, where the regulars in the tattoo parlor wanted to haze their apprentice by dropping him off someplace in Miami in just his shorts, ha ha. Except, he was followed by a car with a camera crew, and to add a further note of reality, he kept a running commentary going through the microphone pack he was wearing while he was supposed to be "lost.")

Instead, maybe Sarah should think about tending to her soap opera family. The kids deserve a stable life, education and discipline. Trig needs therapy. Now, following his development and care would be helpful to other DS families. But, he won't be part of the show, and I don't care to watch Sarah shoot wolf cubs from her airplane, thank you.

The Silver Spoon, a company owned and operated by women and established with a firm belief in supporting women in business and leadership, invited Governor Sarah Palin and her family to participate in a charitable function sponsored by The Silver Spoon and the Red Cross to support the Red Cross’ disaster relief efforts in Haiti. Governor Palin graciously accepted since it was in support of such a worthy and timely cause. The governor arrived with a small group about 15 minutes prior to our store’s official opening; and upon arrival, she and her entire group gave generous donations to the cause. We offered to open early to accommodate her schedule; she did not ask us to open early. The other vendors routinely set up an hour before the event opens, so they were already there when the governor arrived. No one was asked to come in early. When Governor Palin arrived, she and her guests made generous donations. I escorted her around and introduced her to every vendor, and they talked to her about their products and gifted her with samples. She never asked for anything but politely accepted the products. The governor and her family and guests were very gracious and respectful to everyone. We asked and the governor happily agreed to take a photo with the American Red Cross staff and the staff of The Silver Spoon. The governor stayed for a total of about 35 minutes, thanked everyone, made an additional generous personal donation pledge to the Red Cross, and then departed.

The stories currently circulating about Governor Palin’s attendance at our event are total fabrications. Just one example of the many falsehoods is the ridiculous idea that Governor Palin walked away with 40 AIAIAI headphones. In reality, she was given two pairs of AIAIAI headphones – one for herself and one for her daughter Bristol who could not attend the event. The idea that she took 40 pairs is an outrageous falsehood. It would have been impossible because the vendors only bring around 100 items for the entire two day event. They would have run out of product after an hour of opening yesterday.

Just to clarify things, the entire point of giving someone a swag bag is to have them take your product and hopefully purchase more. The whole point of giving away products is to “give them away.” That’s why we call this type of event style a “gifting suite.”

We would like an immediate retraction and an apology to The Silver Spoon, its vendors, and especially to Governor Sarah Palin.

The "Show" that intrigues me is political:
Which political insider (GOP or Democrat) will "out" Sarah first?

It is like an incredible game of chicken -- they all know, and can probably prove, what we bloggers have long suspected.

Yet, Sarah is a powerful force working for both parties at present -- she scares the hell out of Democrats and independents (leading them to back away from the GOP) while she still helps the GOP raise money and support from their brain-dead, credulous base.

But when the advantages for either party begins to fade...

As a woman and a native Angeleno, I found Sarah Palin's "joke" on Leno about people in Los Angeles being frozen with Botox ('ya know as opposed to in the real America - Alaska - where they are frozen as a result of healthy day of moose hunting in 0 degree weather) beyond offensive.

The fact that the "joke" was coming from a woman who obviously is the recent recipient of a facelift and who is obviously no stranger herself to interventions such as Botox and Restylane make the "joke" even more offensive, since it was clear that she was not (such as say Joan Rivers) poking fun at her own plastic surgery.

A recent facelift recipient makes jokes about the cosmetic interventions of others as opposed to her allegedly all natural moose-hunting gal self because she has gotten away selling shit all her life and no one has ever called her on it. It's not hard for me to imagine that such a creature would have no problem believing that she could get away with faking a pregnancy because, after all, she is Sarah and no one ever calls her on her shit.

Perhaps sonmeday the hemotoma will burst (hey Sarah that an "insider" plastic surgery joke).

I wonder if anyone at The Tonight Show will provide confirmation? There would have to be dozens of people who would have first hand knowledge of such enhancement. There could also be corroborating accounts from others in attendance at the taping. Wouldn’t there have been a live satellite feed? If so, there may be existing footage without the canned laughter. I hope someone makes copies and releases it. NBC might bitch about copyright, but if they try to claim there was no enhancement, such off air taping might be exempt from copyright infringement as it would be a news item. Has NBC said "boo" yet?

If Palin can’t do a simple routine on Leno without editing and/or added laugh track, how the hell is she going to do a “reality” show? Is there anyone with a brain which functions even intermittently who believes she would allow cameras to film her tribe without insisting on FULL editorial control?

“CUT! We need to do that scene again. Damn, I’ve gotta quit calling Trig ‘my retarded baby.’ OK, everybody take your marks. We’ll start over at the top of page six in the script. Can somebody PLEASE get me another Red Bull!? Alright everybody, ACTION!”

  62. Thanks Gryph. Tried to send an email to NBC, but apparently their system is overwhelmed as well. They have taken down the video on the Tonight Show page, although there is still a button for the Palin appearance. And the youtube videos are gone. You can still find other programs where some of her standup is shown. The funniest is some FOX bimbo going on about how the audience loved Sarah.

Looks like a corporate effort to shut down technical analysis criticism. Oh, we will just stop right. Too late.

I watched the show last night and thought the sound was strange. It was different with the other guests. Just went to check Media Matters and it wasn't there. Someone said NBC has scrubbed all videos? Something is wrong. Think there is a troll on here. On one site today, someone at the give away and worked there, said some pretty disparaging things about her and here troop assending on them like locusts!...gave her name!

  67. The problem with the Silver Spoon's people trying to put the toothpaste back in the tube is that there were a number of vendors who initially talked about the "Palin "locust" incident including this guy.

"She kind of cleaned the place out," Ben Russo of EMC/Bowery told AOL's Pop Eater. The website said swag-grabs included 40 pairs of AIAIAI earphones.

This fits right in with the usual Palin MO. She does something stupid, crazy, or embarrassing and demands that people who want her business or support lie about it for her.

Think back to ALL of the incidents from the past, and how Stapleton, or the C4P folks, or her dad, or the McCain people had to try and provide cover for her. Remember the chapter in Game Change when she tried to get the McCain people to lie about Todd's AIP membership?

People who are too ignorant to make good choices are forever doing damage control. Or in Sarah's case having others for it for them.

  68. Anon at 9:25,

There are many private security firms in the LA area. I worked for a company whose billionaire CEO lived in southern CA. He always had private security with him. I had a chance a time or two to talk to the guys and they were generally former secret service agents and cops working as private contractors or with small private companies.

All major cities have such services. Seems like Sarah was just amping up her persona with the 'important' entourage and security. She was working on her brand.

Nothing to look at here, in my opinion.

  74. I was reluctant to comment before that I did not understand the uproarious and prolonged laughter during the show to things that were not hilarious or left me thinking "Huh? what is she talking about? I had many "Huh..wtf" moments.

It was no accident Leno provided an audition and set up for that for it is fact Palin was in LA to pitch her self, her family in a show.

I started to feel pity for posters at C4P and their denial about Palin for thy worked hard to provide excuses and defend unable to believe Palin would offer her family for a show. Largely they needed to convince themselves Palin is doing this all for Alaska as she promised when she quit. Denial is beginning to crumble for some unable to reconcile a reality/documentay show featuring kids she lies she wants no attention or press about...geesh.

I despise her all the more for conning people taking advantage of them, thier trust, monies, naivetie while poisioning them/brainwashing them everyone else is the liar.

I'm sure The Tonight Show enhances every guest's appearance. Can't have silence or a lukewarm response to stale jokes, or yet another boring 3 minutes with a 'star' who is only there to explain the clip the studio sent over last week.
Shows like Leno's lost their way decades ago. It's the same damn formula every night. I'll bet Leno couldn't tell you one interesting anecdote about a single guest.
Palin was on to do damage control over that DS actress thingy. Sarah probably wishes she had arranged a miscarriage...for Bristol.

Sorry kids, but you've been had by an obsessive Alaskan who flew three thousand miles to wave a coloring book in Palin's face at a Leno taping.

Unfortunately for you, several Freepers were at the taping and they report that the audience reaction was as we saw on the TV. Most of Leno's audience is usually from out of town, not LA, so the notion that her audience was made up of hard core Dems was a pretty poor assumption by a hard leftie who should have known better than to write something that could have been so easily moked.

If Sarah wants to have a reality show, then I have several suggestions for her that would be more in keeping with her "brand."

On Ellen's show, there is a chamber filled with swirling dollar bills, and the contestant tries to grab as much money as possible in a short time. It is supposed to be hilarious seeing someone stuff the stray bills into her bra and pockets.

There used to be a sort of quiz show where contestants raced around a supermarket trying to fill their shopping carts with as many expensive items as possible. The person with the most steak and caviar won.

There are shows on TV already that show the results of a home makeover, plastic surgery, weight loss contest. I suggest that Sarah roll it all into her own personal reality show. Each week, we can see a new bumpit hair style, the latest nip and tuck done to her face and body, get wardrobe tips (check that black plastic bag in the closet), and, most important of all, parenting tips.

To be a little more realistic, I would like to see Sarah dedicate herself to helping the disabled. Each week, she could focus on a different group of special needs people, showing how they cope with life without limbs after returning from Iraq, or how they cope without one of the senses that we use to see or hear. And, most important of all, we will get a chance to watch Trig's therapy on a week by week basis, and learn how other DS kids, like the remarkable Andrea Friedman overcome their disability to lead a useful, productive life. The final show of the season will highlight the Special Olympics.

  89. Re: questionss NBC edited or enhanced Palin's performance reminded me of what she said about the Couric interview. Palin lied/alleged the network spliced pieces to make her appear or look bad, that they manipulated the footage. Due to her personality, narcissim she'd accuse people of what she would do or request be done. Given Palin consistently won't answer questions asked, expects she can claim grandiose abilities giving no substance, when is asked questions she has no logical or educted answers and that Couric does not have any history of malicious interviews..I did not buy the stuff made up.

Palin is a master of smiling while attacking strengths of others and lying telling opposites about things. She lied disguised as a joke the health care reform summit was a 180 flip blah blah blah..I find it hard to believe the audience was made up of people who are ignorant to guffaw at tht one.

    Speaking of violence...just an observation.

It never ceases to amaze me how Palin supporters in their attempts to spin their webs, as often as not, manage to weave in the threat of violence.

Some supporters even run to cartoon characters in an effort to validate their point of view.

You know, I can understand if these people are thirteen-year-old boys--that, perhaps, could be at least understood--but when a supposed adult turns to violence-bent cartoon characters in an effort to prop up their own make believe world, you just have to wonder if maybe their mama tied their bibs too tight, when they were a baby.

Or maybe they are just compensating for...oh well, that can wait for another time...after certain of these folks has time to think about what other cartoon characters their empty heads identify with...

I do not doubt for a minute that canned laughter was added. It's all fake. I attended the Tonight Show once when Carson was the host back in 1990 or 1991 as I lived in LA then. Before the taping began, they had all sorts of warm interactions going on with the audience to "prime" us for taping. Comediennes came out, Ed McMahon came out to make us feel as if we were the most important people on earth and we needed to laugh and clap and really have a great time and they love us, yada yada yada. I felt sooo special. Then when taping was over, crickets, not a peep to the audience. No thank you, no fuck you, NOTHING. The "talent" sat on the stage and talked among themselves and we were ushered out the door in a hurry. I remember feeling so angry that we had been totally used and set up so that we would make THEM look good for taping. It pissed me off. So, I truly believe they had to add canned laughter 'cause there is no way in hell an LA audience could be properly primed for a Palin appearance. Like the alliteration there??

  101. This doesn't bode well for Leno with the controversy of having Palin on, when he probably promised she'd be a hit & crank the ratings, so he made it happen falsely.

The Wasilla Hillbillies hitting the gifting suite is so outrageous. The entourage included nannies, assistants, etc. and all helped themselves? How are they deserving of Oscar giveaways? Just like the blatant lies Palin gave about $100,000+ looting of Neiman Marcus per Nicole Wallace that Palin denied then later said she left the items in the "belly of the plane" before her dad slipped that they were busy sorting through "everything that needed to be returned" before the RNC came to collect them.

How many times did she repeat that lie? When Elizabeth Hasslebach stumped for her, she was then screaming about it as a "sexist attack" and using it against the Dems, while Sarah claimed to wear thrift shop clothes & just be a home town girl who doesn't need all the trappings of fame. Remember how riled up the audience got with that venomous crap? Palin also lied to Greta in her home interview saying she never took anything and/or that the RNC bought it for her. PATHOLOGICAL!!!!Just like all the lies about Trig.

  102. Many of us have come to the same conclusion that the Silver Spoon retraction demand was not authentic. I just posted a similar comment on PG, and find several here as well.

The Silver Spoon is a sophisticated and professional company, owned and run by two elegant, educated, experienced, respected professional women. They must be cringing at the unwanted publicity that Palin has dragged in behind her. Not a good way to make friends in the Hollywood community Sarah.

Nowhere on the company's site will you find the slang word 'swag' to describe valuable sponsor gifts and goods. Yet, in a press release the company uses that derrogatory term. At the height of their business year - at the biggest function they organize each year.

No, the swag hag is mad and the entertainment media and bloggers should hide, tremble and apologize becase Palin bots and fanatics concocted a phony press release.

Since RAM knows the Hollywood scene, after all she was a hugely successful script writer, she took the lead in the phony demand for a retraction would be my assumption.

Compare the logo at www.thesilverspoon.com to the logo used on the retraction letter.

The logo on the hoax letter appears fuzzy. I think it was simply copied and pasted into a document, enlarged and stretched so it would appear to be authentic.

A genuine logo would have much greater pixel density so that when you enlarge it, there is no loss. At that point, you save it in a compressed format so it renders quickly on a web page.

The amateurish skill level of this hoax is really shocking. Reminds me of the forged medical letter from Palin's doctor released the night before the election.

Maybe we should compare the fonts between those two letters....

    http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/gossip/2010/03/sarah-palin-gift-suite-retraction-request.html

    Oh no she didn't.

That's what Silver Spoon, the company that hosted a pre-Oscars gifting suite attended Wednesday by Sarah Palin, said Thursday about the former governor of Alaska.

As in, oh no, Palin and company didn't do all those "grabby 'n' whiny" things that were reported by an entertainment gossip site Wednesday evening and spread like wildfire online Thursday and into Friday.

"The stories currently circulating about Governor Palin’s attendance at our event are total fabrications," partner Melissa Lemer said in a statement from Silver Spoon (read it here).

"We would like an immediate retraction and an apology to The Silver Spoon, its vendors, and
    especially to Governor Sarah Palin."

To paraphrase Lemer, who said she personally escorted Palin around the suite: Oh no she didn't demand vendors open early just for her, didn't scoop up 40 sets of headphones, didn't behave like "locusts."

Which is pretty much what the Ministry of Gossip reported in the first place.

Just Jared posted a pic Thursday of Willow Palin with her mom, and the Associated Press mentioned the Fox News commentator's $1,700 Red Cross donation -- and what one vendor called her "great skin." The New York Post stayed calm on Friday as well. Palin supporters weren't pleased with the negative reports; non-fans didn't seem as bothered.

Said Lemer: "She never asked for anything but politely accepted the products. The governor and her
family and guests were very gracious and respectful to everyone. We asked and the governor
happily agreed to take a photo with the American Red Cross staff and the staff of The Silver
Spoon. The governor stayed for a total of about 35 minutes, thanked everyone, made an
additional generous personal donation pledge to the Red Cross, and then departed."

The charitable focus of the gifting suite -- such events invite celebrities and media to spotlight luxury products and services -- was to benefit Red Cross efforts in Haiti and Chile.

Sarah's week -- which some have chastised as the equivalent of Levi Johnston's Hollywood presence -- also included a Tuesday appearance on Jay Leno's revamped "Tonight Show," which launched Monday. (Maybe Jay wanted to book the guest least likely to show up with David Letterman?)

Daughter Bristol Palin filmed a scene for ABC Family's "The Secret Life of the American Teenager" on Tuesday, and Sarah reportedly made some rounds pitching an Alaska docudrama with the help of "Survivor," "The Apprentice" and "Eco-Challenge" producer Mark Burnett.

Looks like it's spring break in Wasilla next week -- will the crew stay for the Oscars?

OK, let's see if I get this right. This guy HATES Sarah Palin, but yet he wants to make money off her. OK, believable, don't think so. It has been debunked by NBC, go somewhere else to spew your hatred.

I knew the laughter was canned when I watched the show.

"Live" show, my ass! Leno and his producers need to apologize to the viewers for trying to perpetrate this silly deception.

Palin is a fraud whose image collapses in the light of day.

Comment from Wonkette below. Love it.

She should have written, “LAUGH, DAMN IT” on her palm and showed it to the audience.

Why are the trolls coming out of the woodwork lately? Sarah's made grifting an art since she lost the vp position and quit her day job.
I'm no fan of Sarah, but I wonder why THIS, of all things, causes boils to burst on her fan's butts?

It's Sarah who chose to go on the main stream hollywood show, she so virulently hates and demeans.

    Good job, Gryphen, as usual!

Don't feed the trolls!
It just goes directly to their thighs.
