Joe McGinniss is a gentleman and a very decent human being. Only someone like Sarah would object to being his neighbor.

  2. Thank you for posting this wonderful show. I read Joe McGinniss's book when it first came out, and I have never forgotten it. The only good thing for me that came out of Sarah Palin's run for vice-president was that I connected to several great Alaskan blogs.

  4. Congratulation to Shannyn for a great show -- an absolutely fascinating conversation about Alaska! And many thanks for posting the videos, Gryphen.

I don't have the words to express how impressed I am with every aspect of Joe McGinniss' personality, character, and abilities. His memory is simply astounding.

It seems Joe's broad knowledge and understanding of Alaska and his love for the state uniquely qualify him to write about Sarah and the culture that allowed her rise to run for national office. I can only hope that the insiders with answers to our biggest questions have found the means to contact him. It seems unlikely they'd be comfortable showing up at his door. And, of course, I hope he's had objective exposure to the questions.

I've signed up with Random House and I'm eagerly awaiting their email with news of the publication date!

"Going to Extremes" is back in paperback

In the introduction to the latest paperback edition of "Going to Extremes," author Joe McGinniss muses that Alaska was just 16 years old and Sarah Palin just 13 when he arrived in November 1975 to write that popular best seller.

"To look back on the Alaska of then - when the oil pipeline was still being built and when Palin was playing high school basketball in Wasilla - from the vantage point of 2010, as this new edition of Going to Extremes is published, is to gaze, somewhat nostalgically, at the romantic optimism, rough edges and raw energy of youth," writes McGinniss, in the new edition published by Epicenter Press in Seattle.

  6. On a related note, I recently found another admirable Alaska blog, new to me, and which I think your readers would find interesting. His posts about Miller and SP are quite insightful. (Maybe you Alaskans already know of him, but I haven't spotted this on anyone's blogroll).

Thanks for posting this show. I enjoyed the interview.

I was hoping he would talk more about his latest book though.

Thanks, NancyDrew. The blog you recommended seems first class! I really enjoy the major Alaskan political blogs. They seem to invest more thought and energy into what they do than some in the lower 48. This one is a keeper, right alongside themudflats and IM.

Oh, dear, I left off one of my other favorites: Palin Babygate. Mr. Orr writes wonderful essays about you-know-who.
