Palin first described herself as a mama grizzly during her 2008 vice presidential run. She floated the current usage—as a movement—in a speech before a pro-life women’s group in May, and soon she was reflecting on the special qualities of mama bears on her Facebook page. “Mama bears not only [forage] for themselves to prepare for winter, they [work] twice as hard to slay salmon for their cubs, too.” By late June, Palin’s political-action committee had realized the emotional power of the image, and made an Internet ad—nearly half a million views to date, titled “Mama Grizzlies”—which is as plaintive and urgent as a 1960s protest song. It calls America’s women to a sisterhood of grizzlies “because moms kind of just know when there’s something wrong.”
With few exceptions, the grizzlies have been disinterested in the issues and policies that their political opponents say are good for children—despite new numbers from the census showing that rising numbers of America’s children are poor. Most of these candidates have vowed to fight to repeal President Obama’s health-care plan, for instance, and Bachmann and Haley have taken special aim at CHIP, a federal program aimed at helping low-income kids get health insurance. In 2001, as a member of Nevada’s state Assembly, Angle voted no on a domestic-violence bill that would recognize restraining orders issued in other states. In 2007 Haley, a state representative, voted against a measure that would have created a kindergarten program for at-risk kids. As governor of Alaska in 2008, Palin slashed funding for Covenant House that included resources for teenage mothers. In 2009 Bachmann voted no on a bill that would give federal employees four weeks of paid parental leave.
Palin, Haley, Bachmann, Angle, and O’Donnell all declined to comment for this story. (Most grizzly candidates regard the mainstream press as the enemy.) But a review of their positions suggests that a grizzly’s first priority is to protect her cubs by keeping government the heck out of their lives.
“Government,” in this sense, generally means broad intrusions, such as taxes, the U.S. Department of Education, and federal stimulus money, as well as smaller ones, such as proposals to increase Pell Grants (designed to make college more affordable, opposed by Bachmann). From a grizzly’s point of view, the government is everywhere, and it needs to back off. “We’ve watched the tentacles of big government weasel their way into every part of our lives,” said O’Donnell at a Values Voters speech in Washington, D.C. “Bureaucrats and politicians in Washington think they should decide what kind of lightbulb we use, what kind of toilets we flush, what kind of car we drive…They’ll buy your teenage daughter an abortion, but they won’t let her buy a sugary soda in a school’s vending machine.” O’Donnell, who doesn’t have children, refers in speeches to “our grandchildren,” thus forging a conceptual alliance with her sister bears.
Fundamentally, the mama-grizzly phenomenon is not really a movement or even a political term that represents a fully coherent set of ideas. It’s mostly a marketing tool, meant to draw attention to Americans’ broad dissatisfaction with the way things are. Fair enough. Many people are dissatisfied, and they want to vent and they want to change Washington. But in the wild, real mama grizzlies are known to be aggressive, irrational, and mean. The issues facing the country are complex, and bears are not.
I know that Newsweek is going out of business so perhaps they do no feel they have much to lose, but I am VERY gratified to see them joining Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair, and a number of courageous blogs in refusing to allow the Palin media machine to intimidate them into avoiding important stories that might piss a certain ex-half term governor, and her crazy ass followers, off.
My feeling is that the more people who speak out and hold their ground against the backlash from the Palin-bots and Fox News, the more people will then be willing to speak out in the future.
As my daughter says "She is only one little nothing of a person, who is not even a politician anymore, why are people still afraid of her?" Why indeed?
BTW please take the time to click the link above and read the entire Newsweek article. There is much more to it than what I cut and pasted here, and they certainly deserve the hits.
The whole schtick of a mama grizzly is supposed to be a maternal instinct to protect her cub.
ReplyDeleteSarah doesn't protect her kids, she pimps them for money.
Christine doesn't even have any kids.
Do "real" grizzlies hide in their den when they feel threatened? I don't think so. These women are more like chickens in a henhouse.
ReplyDeleteCluck! Cluck! Cluck!
you REALLY need to stop giving palin power she doesnt have.
ReplyDeleteshe is a creation of fox news and most likly the koch brothers are the force behind everything she does.
she has no power of her own and you should report it that way because you may start seeing other trhings too.
A (lazy) Mama Grifter Grizzly would have a pretty good built-in excuse for avoiding the hard work of an election campaign- "working hard to slay salmon for her cubs, too.”
ReplyDeleteHey Gryphen - it's one of your conservative, Charismatic ardent readers, checking in. Just wanted to say thanks for all the reporting you do. You and I couldn't be farther apart on most political issues; except that we do agree the truth deserves to stand, unaided, unabashed in the light of day, in the middle of the public square. That we agree on. I disagree with you on so many, many fronts. But on the matter of truth "taking a stand" - we're on the same page. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteIt's about time serious journalists outside the blogs started tearing away the mask of compassion these self-absorbed, unqualified, ignorant men and women running under the GOP and Tea Party banners have been trying to hide behind.
ReplyDeleteNewsweek is to be congratulated in having the courage to do just that. The dots they connect should have been connected months - even years ago. It's cutting things close to the wire to expose them now, but better late than never.
I have never understood how people who use their faith as a draw to the crowds can hold such cruel and selfish positions when it comes to social programs designed to help anyone whose life has suddenly taken a turn for the worse. Isn't that exactly when their faith tells them they should be helping most?
Goodness, I hope articles such as this hit home to those who have been tricked or blinded to the truth.
Thank you, Gryphen, for having been at the vanguard of the call to sanity many, many months before this. As an Alaskan blogger, you've been on top of this from the get-go. As the man you are, you have exhibited integrity and courage in pursuing what others wanted to ignore. At least now you are seeing your positions validated on a national platform.
I hope it is just the beginning of the end for the dirty tricks from the GOP. The Rovian tactics of half-truths or outright lies as a matter of course may still burn themselves out as more people see how they've been duped and manipulated.
Thanks for shining the light as you have for as long as you have. Keep it up. We need you.
Real mama grizzlies protect their offspring.
ReplyDeleteAnd real mama grizzleys are totally covered in matted hair and smell awful. Coincidence? I don't think so.
ReplyDeleteTHIS IS BREAKING NEWS!!
ReplyDeleteOBEY! IGNORE THIS!!!!!
Don't forget America's sweethearts are more important than ever before !!
How to restore your career and your reputation.
I think the whole world has just gotten sick and tired of this lying nasty bitch.
ReplyDeleteAll of these women are the Xtian Taliban. They want to slash everything that is good for other people's children. Cuz Xtian schooling and homeschooling is the only way to go, you betcha. You gotta get rid of government to clear the way for the rule of biblican law. There is no other explanation for the rise of these ignorant and cruel fronts.
ReplyDeleteHopefully, they all go into hibernation soon.
ReplyDeleteAll I see are cowards.
ReplyDeleteThe lady covering her nose as she passed the pack in Beverly Hills did not appear to have hay fever. I bet the rooms they left were a real mess. I remember what was said about her nasty ways on the McCain campaign.
ReplyDelete"Fundamentally, the mama-grizzly phenomenon is not really a movement or even a political term that represents a fully coherent set of ideas. It’s mostly a marketing tool, meant to draw attention to Americans’ broad dissatisfaction with the way things are."
ReplyDeletePaid for by those delightful Koch boys, who want to push women, along with their children and grandchildren, back to the 1850s.
Now THAT'S grisly!
no picture of Sharron Angle or Carly Fiorina or Jan Brewer?
ReplyDeleteWhat a shame!
These women are beyond dangerous. The damage they have already done to the image of the American woman will take decades to repair.
and I honestly believe that someone owes real female bears an apology.
- kellygrrrl
how long will Rupert Murdoch spend millions of dollars to protect Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin?
ReplyDeleteI assume he's getting a lot of that money from the Koch Bros and other corporate overlords.
He can't be carrying these two clowns on his own dime.
- kellygrrrl
haven't read the article yet, but thanks for posting gryphen.
ReplyDeleteI love this cover. it conveys CLONES. not individuals with their own ideas and thoughts, but CLONES. absolutely great because that is exactly what they are.
at some point a few years ago some powerful people decided that they were going to actively start promoting women in politics. not because they are altruistic and think that women are equal to men, but because of the kid-glove treatment they will get from the press and the public. what a way to forward your sub-human agenda, with empty vessels who will be treated kindly because they are women.
HA! love this cover. it exposes the truth without the need for any words. I hope it is next to every cash register in every grocery store in america.
OT, but Sarah is so not going to like that Pete Rouse is taking over for Rahm.
ReplyDeleteAn Alaska connection in the White House, and it isn't her.
Mama grizzlies might be fierce when defending their cubs, but all in all they aren't very smart. They are not good at discerning whether a threat is real, and as a result, leave a lot of collateral damage in their wake.
ReplyDeleteThe gap between these conservative female politicians' superficial IMAGES and their ACTIONS is vast.
ReplyDeleteThe truth of the matter is that they could give a flip about other women and children.
If these female politicians want to be Mama Grizzlies, they need to get their asses back home and take care of their own children.
This country needs public servants who are concerned about the complex problems of men, women, and all children in our society. We don't need mothering by the likes of these heartless, fraudulent and ambitious b*tches.
Hey I'm happy with the Winnie the Poo comparison.
ReplyDeleteBears of very little brain.
Poo however was/is sweet and generally very generous and gets along with everybody.
I would love to hear somebody ask Sarah to justify pit bull in lipstick/grizzly in hooker boots with feminist.
ReplyDeleteIn fact Sarah claims title to any title that she can sell, whether it is logical or even accurate.
YEA for Rouse who is a former Alaskan!
ReplyDeleteInteresting story in the N Y Times (and elsewhere) today on the use of "Queen Esther" references in the computer code Israel is suspected of creating in order to sabotage Iranian centrifuges.
ReplyDeleteAll these women are frauds. They could care less about women, children or people in general. All they care about are their careers and how to dupe other people out of their money. I am a woman and I am completely embarrassed by them.
ReplyDeleteWhen I saw the Newsweek Cover, that old Sesame Street song and game flashed into my mind...
ReplyDelete"One of these things is not like the other..."
They all sure look similar and act similar, but one of them is a sociopath.
Do you know who that is?
Mamma Grizzlies don't throw their kids in front of them for protection. The fg uses the strength of people wanting to protect her kids and be nice around them as a weakness.
ReplyDeleteShe reminds me of some members of a door knocking faith a couple of years ago. I was polite, "No thank you, I'm not interested." They pressed, would I please take their magazine from ever so cute John-John? He was just learning! I glared at them and said, "Little John-John needs to LEARN to respect a POLITE no and when to LEAVE. NO! Now get off my porch and put on your list to not come back!"
People have to treat the fg as an adult in an adult environment regardless of her kids being there. Say the f word if you usually say it, boo her, ask hard questions. She can leave the kids in the den if she wants to hunt next time and play grizzly.
Well, real Mama Grizzlies are called sows so I'm renaming Palin as Sow Sarah. That might not be what she had in mind when she chose this moniker but that's the way it is. So now I have Sow Sarah and Sarah's Sows for the other weasel women. Lovely abbreviation too: SS Palin. Heh
ReplyDeleteO/T, but reading fans comments on Bristol's official FB page, some "older" men seem inappropriately interested in her. Creepy.
ReplyDelete"Hey Nik -- Get Michelle on the line -- Shell, you there? Oh, good -- oh hey, Christine? What? I can't hear you babe ... BLUE? You wanna to wear BLUE at the photo shoot tomorrow? ARE YOU CRAZY? Hang on, hang on, babe -- oh for heaven's sake, stop blathering ... We're doing red -- YES, WE ARE!!!!! Do. not. mess. with. me. RED, or don't show at all -- say wha -- Sharon?? SHARON??? She must have hung up. Girls. Seriously now. Dust off your naughty monkeys and, for crying out loud, NO BROOMSTICKS, CHRIS!!!"
ReplyDeleteThe news that I heard today was that recently, 4 million additional people have signed up for Medicare as their other health resources have dried up. They anticipate another couple of million people to sign up.
ReplyDeleteSo, Mama Grizzlies, when it comes to rejected government aid and taking care of your own, please start by setting a good example. Have all of your relatives of retirement age voluntarily give up their Social Security and Medicare. You might follow their good example. You see, more people have turned to the government to take care of them. No one wants to get bitten by a Mean Mama Grizzly.
If Pete Rouse has Alaska connections, he might, "know stuff" or will come to know stuff if the grifter tries to run.
ReplyDeleteThe correct term for a female grizzly is "sow". Really, look it up.
ReplyDeleteSow Sarah. That is comical. I normally never spell out her name, but I will say Sow Sarah!
ReplyDeleteGrizzly Mamas are patriots. Grizzlies protect all their cubs.
ReplyDeleteShould the military contain these stories in case the Afghans get upset? Do Grizzly Mamas or many Americans care what our soldiers do while fighting for Sarah's freedom of the press?
Americans could see the photos except that photos might upset Afghans. Is that a good reason to censor them?
CHRIS McGREAL: Yeah. It really only seems that this case was dealt with when it moved outside of the authorities immediately responsible for this unit in Kandahar. Once other investigators were brought in, principally over the assault of the soldier for reporting the drug use, then it essentially moved beyond the unit and the military authorities in Kandahar, and it became harder for the military to contain it.
CHRIS McGREAL: I personally don’t know how many of these photos there are and who exactly is in them, although it is known that there are quite a few of them, and it does seem to have been part of a regular practice. Again, there seems to have been a culture of this as part of how this unit went about its daily duties.

It's going to be brutal around here on November 3.
ReplyDeleteI see that cover as the next lineup of the "The Apprentice". C'mon, Mr. Trump! It'll be fantastic!
ReplyDeleteGrizzlies - "slayin' salmon for their cubs." No, they don't.
Also, male grizzlies are known to kill cubs, too. Even their own.
So how 'bout that?
Bears are true scavengers; they eat everything they can find, dead or alive. Rotten stuff, offal, anything. That sounds about right.
Voting day is November 2nd.
Election Day - Tuesday, November 2, 2010 - Polls are open from 7:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.
Registration and Registration Updates Deadline – Sunday, October 3, 2010
So she's not happy with the teabaggers, she's going to start her own political party called the Grizzlies?
ReplyDeleteYeah, good luck with that Sarah.
Better to found the Church of the Mama Grizzly with yourself as supreme high priestess. Tax free and all the donations you can take in without all those strings.
I just read this post and right underneath is an ad showing smokey the bear! you gotta love that!
ReplyDeleteHave frequently read that Michele Bachmann "raised 23 foster children". And Newsweek says that she voted against increases in Pell grants. Have to assume at least quite a few of her foster children could have used that money.
ReplyDeleteThis may be a terrible, awful thing to suspect but I wonder how much money the Bachmans' made every month on those foster children?
Reason I say that is back in the early 70's, we had a neighbor who was a very religious member of a fundamentalist church, had four children of her own, 3 of whom were mentally...challenged. They kept 4 foster children and the state of IL paid $285 per month per child. None of the kids were ever outside playing with or hanging out with any of the other kids on the street. Never one time. I know a lot of good is done by families who care for foster children but there are some whose motives are less than what the children deserve. I would suspect Bachman of being one who might be in it for the money.
