From Talk to Action:
Cureton is vice president for church ministries for the Family Research Council. During the FRC's recent "Values Voter Summit," he warned attendees at a breakout session on churches and politics to be ready for some intense action.
"The battle that we're fighting," he said, "is not just a political and cultural battle, it's a spiritual battle."
And when a battle is spiritual, you can be sure that some people are serving the wrong side.
"When you think about it, you know, the real enemy is not the poor, deluded souls who are advancing these evil agendas," Cureton said. "Really, they're just simply pawns in the hands of their malevolent master. They're simply doing the bidding of the devil, OK?"
But Cureton, a Southern Baptist pastor and former denominational official, wasn't done there. Imploring right-wing evangelicals to politicize their churches and blanket them with "voter guides" (documents that are always stacked to favor the most right-wing candidate), he insisted that the last thing you want to do is turn out the vote across the board. Only the people who agree with the Religious Right should be targeted on Election Day, he said.
"We're not just encouraging people to vote however," Cureton said. "That's what happened in the last election. That's how Obama got elected - a bunch of stupid evangelicals who didn't even use their biblical values when they went in the voting booth."
It is always important to remember that much of the energy fueling the engine that drives the Republican party forward is this fundamentalist religious fervor that believes the country is a Christian nation and despises all interlopers who they see as not puritanical enough.
Of course the truly ridiculous part is that many in the GOP are only Christians on the surface and continue to lie, whore, and cheat as much, and probably more, than the next guy, However so long as they say the right things, bow their heads at the right times, and appear to stand for the right issues, they easily get the support of this crazed fundamentalist right wing network that accepts that they are superior to any candidate who refuses to jump through their religious hoops.
Even George Bush really only used the "Moral Majority" and their brethren to get into office. But he did provide payback for their support by starting the Holy War they had lusted after for the last 170 years, and by putting Roberts and Alito on the Supreme Court, but not nearly enough to appease the fanatical hunger of the Rapture Ready crowd.
But now the fundies have learned their lessons to some degree and are starting to demand their own "loyalty oath." And if THAT ever becomes the norm in the Republican party all of us still living in the reality based world had better start to fight back in a big way because there is no telling how much more damage these wingnuts could do if their Representatives really believed some of the bullshit they have been spouting all of these years.
You're correct, Gryphen. Well said. Thank you for keeping up the watch, because we must understand what we're up against.
ReplyDeleteThe Evangelicals are just English speaking Taleban.
ReplyDeleteI agree with this.
ReplyDeleteAnd if THAT ever becomes the norm in the Republican party all of us still living in the reality based world had better start to fight back in a big way because there is no telling how much more damage these wingnuts could do if their Representatives really believed some of the bullshit they have been spouting all of these years.
BAD NEWS:
I think you can name 20 Senators and Representatives in Washington DC that truly believe what they have been spouting- and who hold much more extreme positions than what they are saying openly. I know I can.
How many supporters for the Ugandan gay extermination law?
How many support quarantining all HIV positive residents of the US?
They will just be talking about these beliefs more openly as their numbers grow.
Some scary crazy folks, there.
ReplyDeleteI'm wondering if anyone can tell me if it would be possible to actually get the IRS to do anything about these churches that are meddling in politics? I've seen a big advertising sign outside The Valley Baptist Tabernacle in Wasilla (I think they're affiliated w/ Prevo) telling passing motorists to vote a certain way on ballot measures. When I went in to complain, they lied and said they were doing nothing illegal. I tried to complain about it to the IRS, as tax-exempt churches are barred from this type of activity. I didn't get very far, though. Maybe all of us who are disgusted with the Religious (Not So) Right's takeover of the political system can get involved by attending their churches and photographing/videotaping their attempts to influence politics. I'd GLADLY give up my Sunday mornings to do so if we could get it to stop. Anybody else??
These are the forces that are battling it out right now in Alaska's US senate race. It's good and evil challenging each other and Alaskans have an extremely uncomfortable front row seat.
ReplyDeleteJoe Miller presents himself as a good Christian but his actions and words show he practices the opposite of Christ's teachings. He and Sarah Palin are false prophets.
So he thinks that many of them are "stupid evangelicals".Too bad that they don't know this.
ReplyDeleteIt's really pissing me off that people are saying cutting taxes on the over 250k crowd is wrong. Who do you think creates businesses and jobs, the impoverished? The super wealthy only account for a VERY small percentage of the US.
ReplyDeleteWhy Track Palin joined the Army.
ReplyDeleteFree Press
We tried to get some footage of Palin herself, but her handler wouldn't let us near her. We were told she doesn't care much for Alaska Dispatch. I'm not sure what the issue is -- I have been an intern for the Dispatch only three weeks now -- but her handler said something about her not liking that the Dispatch staff sometimes appear on conservative talk show host Dan Fagan's radio show on KFQD.
Religious zealots of any faith are among the most dangerous human beings there are.
ReplyDeleteWhat makes these zealots even more dangerous is that greed propels them.
They do want total control of others, but they want to profit from it. No small wonder that they are allied with big business.
Good thing he is a dancer.
ReplyDeleteLooking at some of my books on the Spanish Inquisition. It was about religion but the driving was fueled by greed for the land that came with it.Yes bend your mind on that over some 6 century's later it does look the same.
ReplyDeleteGet your head straight or you get nothing.
This is what we face and this is not in anyway acceptable. These people are battling the human spirit and will never win over all. But we must go uot of our way to shut these people up. and get on with living life.
OT: WARNING: If you are Alaskan you will not want to read this.
ReplyDeleteOne of your own has a drug problem. Better not deal with the facts, let these people fester. Brad Hanson is a killer coach, he shows your hockey boys how it's done, after that there is always a recruiter, join the Army boys. Just don't tell them about the downside.
In Hawaii, we're facing the BIG time efforts of these folks to take over - everything. Republicans Duke Aiona & his Lt Gov. candidate are both strong Dominionists. Aiona is head of "Transformation Hawaii" and has already dedicated Hawaii to God. Sound familiar? But he's not a token dominionist like Scarah is - he's the real deal - pals around with the Ugandans who want to kill Homosexuals & just not reporting them can earn you 3 years in prison. They're all a part of the 7 Mountain group - See Leah Burton's excellent blog "God's Own Party for details. I could go on about the things he's been doing behind the scenes during his 8 yrs as Lt Gov, but you get the picture. It's horrific.
ReplyDeleteWe defeated two of their major players - Hannemann & Okina in the primaries. YAY! Now on to the General. I cautiously think Neil Abercrombie (D) will win but don't count the fanatics down because of their dirty tricks.
We all need to stand up, speak out and VOTE to make sure these people do not succeed.
Thanks Gryphen for speaking out! You ROCK!
The Muslim Taliban relies on the utter stupidity and inability to even READ, of their sheeplike followers.
ReplyDeleteYou would THINK that such tactics would not work, in modern day America, where we are supposedly the best educated people on the planet.
But no matter where you go on the internet, or in real life, there are people parroting the crap they've heard on Fox "News" as if they personally witnessed the events leading to such conclusions.
We were treated to an example of this on an earlier posting, right here (the VERBATIM spouting of the reason to let the rich not pay their fair share of taxes, as I've heard in 75 other places--that it is THEY who provide the jobs, yadda yadda.)
If Americans are that smart, why can't they hear their own words, sounding MORE like Taliban zealots, than the original version?
Churches, when I was growing up, were NOTHING like this! Why aren't Christians NOTICING what has changed, and DO something about it?
The character of the "god" being worshipped, has morphed into some Gordon Gecko like freak, from the movie "Wall Street."
I don't understand how these idiots can claim to be people of "faith."
ReplyDeleteDo they really think God is not in charge? Do they honestly think God needs them to "take back" Uhmerika for Him?
I just finised this book:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.amazon.com/American-Fascists-Christian-Right-America/dp/0743284437
Scary, scary stuff.
Under the Democrats' tax plan:
ReplyDeleteif you make less than $10k you get a $53 tax break.
If you make more than $10k, but less than $20k you get another tax break of $324 as well as the $53.
If you make more than $20k but less than $30k you get the $53 + the $324 PLUS another $324.
$30k < but < $40k = all the previous tax breaks PLUS another $125.
$40k < another $20 <$50k
$50k < another $216 <$75k
$75 < another $768 <$100k
$100 < another $1866 <$200k
...in other words - those making more than $200k already get all the tax breaks everyone else gets!
In other words - the Republicans try to make is sound like the over $200k crowd don't get any tax breaks when the Bush tax cuts sundown.
But that's just not true. Let me reiterate:
The rich get all of the tax breaks those less fortunate get - a total of $3,766.00 - but they want MORE. They ALSO want a tax break on the money they make over $200,000.00 ($250,000.00 for married couples.)
So when your Fox News watching conservative friends tell you it's not fair that the rich don't get any tax breaks under the Democrats' plan - tell them they're wrong.
By the way - I wish someone would point out their deception when the Republicans spout their nonsense about "taxing the rich" on the news.
ReplyDeleteNot FOX news of course; they're part of the deception.
