Eight false things the public "knows" prior to election day.

This was brilliantly written by Dave Johnson:.

I believe it is something we all should see so I reposted it here.

There are a number things the public "knows" as we head into the election that are just false. If people elect leaders based on false information, the things those leaders do in office will not be what the public expects or needs.

Here are eight of the biggest myths that are out there:

1) President Obama tripled the deficit.

Reality: Bush's last budget had a $1.416 trillion deficit. Obama's first reduced that to $1.29 trillion.

2) President Obama raised taxes, which hurt the economy.

Reality: Obama cut taxes. 40% of the "stimulus" was wasted on tax cuts which only create debt, which is why it was so much less effective than it could have been.

3) President Obama bailed out the banks.

Reality: While many people conflate the "stimulus" with the bank bailouts, the bank bailouts were requested by President Bush and his Treasury Secretary, former Goldman Sachs CEO Henry Paulson. (Paulson also wanted the bailouts to be "non-reviewable by any court or any agency.") The bailouts passed and began before the 2008 election of President Obama.

4) The stimulus didn't work.

Reality: The stimulus worked, but was not enough. In fact, according to the Congressional Budget Office, the stimulus raised employment by between 1.4 million and 3.3 million jobs.

5) Businesses will hire if they get tax cuts.

Reality: A business hires the right number of employees to meet demand. Having extra cash does not cause a business to hire, but a business that has a demand for what it does will find the money to hire. Businesses want customers, not tax cuts.

6) Health care reform costs $1 trillion.

Reality: The health care reform reduces government deficits by $138 billion.

7) Social Security is a Ponzi scheme, is "going broke," people live longer, fewer workers per retiree, etc.

Reality: Social Security has run a surplus since it began, has a trust fund in the trillions, is completely sound for at least 25 more years and cannot legally borrow so cannot contribute to the deficit (compare that to the military budget!) Life expectancy is only longer because fewer babies die; people who reach 65 live about the same number of years as they used to.

8) Government spending takes money out of the economy.

Reality: Government is We, the People and the money it spends is on We, the People. Many people do not know that it is government that builds the roads, airports, ports, courts, schools and other things that are the soil in which business thrives. Many people think that all government spending is on "welfare" and "foreign aid" when that is only a small part of the government's budget.

This stuff really matters.

If the public votes in a new Congress because a majority of voters think this one tripled the deficit, and as a result the new people follow the policies that actually tripled the deficit, the country could go broke.

If the public votes in a new Congress that rejects the idea of helping to create demand in the economy because they think it didn't work, then the new Congress could do things that cause a depression.

If the public votes in a new Congress because they think the health care reform will increase the deficit when it is actually projected to reduce the deficit, then the new Congress could repeal health care reform and thereby make the deficit worse. And on it goes.

If you have friends and family who seem confused by the issues please have them read this.

Remember we are battling back against the flood of false information being disseminated by Fox News and the Republican party, and all we have on our side is the truth.  Hopefully if enough people are exposed to it, this election will turn out substantially different than Sarah Palin, the teabaggers, and Rupert Murdoch have anticipated.

  4. We very clearly need a second stimulus. I wish Obama would start a program similar to the CCC camps from the WPA like they had during the great depression. I believe he would like to but is afraid the right will start yelling socialist. They got a lot of infrastructure done and kept a lot of young people who could not get work or even food out of trouble.

o/t but Sarah needs to realize JFK was killed by politics, literally. He threatened the country with change. He died. That is the only conspiracy theory I believe. She may have the GOP in her pocket but she needs to watch her back

Wolf Blitzedhead now yammering on about Obama raised unemployment from 7% to 9% since he took office -- not once mentioning that more private sector jobs have been created in Obama's 2 years than in all of Bush's 8.

CNN also seemingly obsessed with Palin's FLA speech today, failing to mention that Marco Rubio ditched Palin behind her back. She introduced him in her speech, and he was nowhere to be found.

Obama pulling in huge crowds everywhere this week. Sarah, not so much.
How's that "Enthusiasm Gap" working out for ya'

1:02 PM - I have wanted programs like that from the first word that there would be a stimulus. It would mean lasting infrastructure which we are in dire need of rebuilding, repairing, retrofitting etc. Kudos to you and to Gryphen for all his hard work and information, to say nothing of all the arrows sent his way from the uninformed.

The ignorance of historical facts shown by the right wingers constantly invoking "Reagan" as their standard bearer is frightening. If the Teapartiers and especially $Palin were really savvy to the governing Reagan put forth and his personal life they would never tout him as their role model:check these few examples and then go figure how $P can say we want more of this because it was so great:>(

Reagan left us with the largest deficit since the Great Depression until GW Bush came along

As a 1st term CA governor Reagan added to budget deficit for the state
As president froze COLA (cost of living) for Social Security recipients as president
    Supported Nixon during Watergate
Liberalized abortions in CA state while governor
As president fired all the air traffic controllers on strike who did not return when he said for them to
Appointed first female Supreme Court justice
His “supply side” economics was a Trojan Horse designed to benefit the rich/ per his budget director
Reagan’s 1983 budget projected a deficit of $91.5 billion (after campaigning on fiscal conservatism) and by September the nation was in the worst recession since the Great Depression
Reagan’s 1984 budget submitted with $189 billion deficit
    1985 budget $180.4 billion deficit
August 11, 1984 while checking a microphone before a radio broadcast Reagan makes a joke saying, “My fellow Americans, I am pleased to tell you today that I’ve signed legislation that will outlaw Russia forever. We begin bombing in five minutes. “ This while he was running for re-election as president. (Not funny, even as a joke! What if the mike had been live as has happened so often? Would we have had a Soviet invasion?)
Married Nancy Davis when she was already pregnant with their daughter
February 1986 submits budget with deficit of $143.6 billion bringing his cumulative deficits during his administration to one trillion dollars!
Reagan publicly states on television in November, 1986 that he did not trade weapons or anything else for hostages. Oliver North was successful in shredding many, many documents throughout the night. Not all the evidence was destroyed and the Iran-Contra fiasco came to light and Reagan either lied or his memory failed him For this debacle Reagan could have been impeached, but was not.
It was public knowledge that the Reagan’s consulted an astrologer for guidance for some of the president’s actions
Though he was not diagnosed with Alzheimer’s until 1993 it was evident several years before that his memory was faulty, and there are records of his confusion earlier, and there was much reference to Nancy Reagan’s whispering in his ear to keep him on track while he was still serving as president, as well as his “snoozes” during meetings where he was doing our nation’s business

great list! i put it up on my facebook page - i'm sure i'll either hear crickets or have a few arguments with conservative fam and friends.
why is it so hard to get the truth to people? it's right there, available to them, just as available as limbaugh and fox and beck and palin, but people don't always choose it. it rocks their world too much. with freedom of speech, there also seems to the freedom to lie in this country. "we the people" should demand better from our sources of information, but human failings and shortcomings keep the lies alive and well, and the above mentioned liars even build careers on them. i am so tired of all the lies and fear and hate and -ism's. i could use a sanity vacation, too. wish i could make it down to dc, but i will be sure to tune in to the live stream. it's a small gesture in troubled times, but who knows if it might build some critical mass for sanity.
yay sanity and truth and all that makes light out of the pits of mordor!

Margaret, all it takes is ten minutes of channel surfing and you quickly find out that the number of problems facing America seem to correspond with the number of channels offered on cable television. I told Harold to cancel our subscription and get out the old rabbit ears.

If Glenn Beck hasn’t met a half-man-half-monkey yet, he didn’t get out much during his rally. There was more knuckle dragging on the National Mall that day than the National Zoo… about 89,000 more. And I find it odd that Sarah Palin can see November from her house but she couldn’t see a teen pregnancy coming if her life depended on it. Maybe if she spent more time at her house rather than at Tea Party rallies, one of her children might actually graduate from those abstinence only classes with a passing grade.

Folks, from where I sit, we’ve never had it so good. One less war. Most of the TARP money paid back and another Great Depression avoided. Unemployment numbers are shitty – yes - BUT imagine how bad it would be if Republicans had done away with unemployment benefits like they wanted. And as someone who has Medicare, I can assure you that government-run healthcare isn’t Obamacare, it’s common-decency-care.

The Tea Party wants to complain about Obama’s “run-away spending” but the fact is Bush spent billions on wars while Obama has spent billions on an economic stimulus package. Fact. More private sector jobs were created in the last 8 months than in the entire 8 years of the Bush presidency. Fact. The only thing the Republican Party has increased recently is the number of gay teen suicides.

And yes, Whoopi and Joy shouldn’t have walked off. But Bill O’Reilly never should have walked on. He has plenty of air time to get his view out. Barbara didn’t need to give him more.

Did anyone watch the Charlie Rose interview with Nancy Pelosi? What exactly do people not like about her? I think she is lovely. But who am I kidding? Most Americans can list the accomplishments of a Real Housewife of New Jersey but have no idea what Nancy Pelosi has done or not done.

Thank God PBS comes through on the rabbit ears. I mean it really.

    However that's not all.

Your lawyers also told the judge they wanted to take a statement from me.

To quote the great Robert DiNero; "you talkin' to me?"

  19. Breaking News:

    Source: Anchorage Daily News

FAIRBANKS -- A judge ruled today that the Fairbanks North Star Borough must release personnel records of Senate candidate Joe Miller.

In an unusual Saturday hearing, retired Superior Court Judge Winston Burbank ruled that the public's right to know about candidates outweighed Miller's right to privacy.

Burbank ordered no release until Tuesday afternoon, however, to allow for the decision to be appealed to the Alaska Supreme Court.

The judge said at least some documents being sought would not be released, and some would be redacted.

  21. Very good. Thanks for that. I knew a lot of it but not all.

I don't see how people who are supposedly qualified to vote can forget that it was Bush who implemented the bailout.

If a lot of people don't know that the government builds and maintains roads and such, then maybe that explains why they think the government cannot run health care.

Concerning #5 about businesses hiring if they get tax breaks.....

I just read an interesting article that claims a study was done and they found that businesses and the rich actually invest more money when taxes are raised on them as spending and investing gives them more tax breaks. When taxes are lowered, they take profit because with lower taxes, they can keep more of it.

If I can remember where I read it, I'll post a link.
