Even as staunch of a conservative as ex-Nixon speechwriter Ben Stein cannot stomach Joe Miller's brand of politics.

Now much of this must be taken with a grain of salt, because Stein is clearly a Murkowski supporter, however he does make some very valid points.

From the Alaska Dispatch:

The GOP candidate for (much too) high office in Alaska, Joe Miller, who beat the redoubtable GOP stalwart, Lisa Murkowski, in the primary, with major Tea Party help, is a bit reminiscent of Willy Stark. Only stupid.

Joe Miller supposedly is a graduate of Yale Law School, as I am, and I never knew one stupid person at Yale Law, which makes me wonder if Mr. Miller really went there. A Yale Law grad would not have security guards who would for a moment consider "arresting" and handcuffing a member of the Alaska press, Tony Hopfinger, who had the audacity to ask questions about Miller's past transgressions involving computer stuffing of a polling place in an unofficial GOP poll.

A Yale Law grad, especially one supported by the Tea Party, which is all about curbing abuses of power by the government, would not even think of taking away the reporter's video camera, as Miller's guards did. That's what stupid people do. Maybe I am wrong and he somehow slipped through the Ivied doors when they weren't looking. Maybe Miller thinks he is boss of some kind of third world country and his mirrored sunglass-wearing Tontons Macoutes can just bully anyone who gets in his way.

That is not what the Tea Party is all about. It is certainly not what the GOP is about. It isn't even what the Democratic Party is about.

Can you imagine a statewide official doing this or allowing his guards to do this -- and not then sending out a full throated apology? Yet Miller is accusing the reporter of assaulting his guards, who, as apparently seen by witnesses, surrounded Hopfinger and menaced him, and then cuffed him when he tried to escape. How stupid can a candidate be? How can this be happening?

As you can probably imagine Stein, a man of Jewish descent, was especially appalled at Miller's reference to East Germany's success at curbing the flow of immigration as a model for the U.S. borders.

It gets a lot worse. When asked how the USA could seal the border with Mexico, Miller, astonishingly, gave as an example of effective border closure the regime of Communist East Germany. That border sealing involved shooting or blowing up with mines or electrocuting potential border crossers. Can a GOP candidate actually be suggesting such brutal means of border control -- which took the lives of hundreds of East Germans seeking freedom -- as a model for the United States?

Yes, he can and he did.

If you visit the Dispatch you can read the rest of Stein's condemnation, which is followed by a call to write in Lisa Murkowsi.  Of course we all know there is a much better choice than the Senator who has rented her Senate vote to big energy companies time and time again.

(I don't know about the rest of you but I could not read Ben Stein's words without imagining that voice of his calling out to the shadowy Senate candidate, "Miller...Miller...Miller)

While I am on the subject of Joe "The Berlin Wall was keen!" Miller, I thought I would share with you a portion of an e-mail that was sent to me just today from somebody who was very curious about Joey's military discharge papers.

My brother is back in the US and called tonight; I sent him the link to the DD214 for him to look at (he was on a military computer while gone; not smart to be looking at it then, likely). Based on his 30 years of hiring or not hiring people in his military unit he deemed it "definitely covering up something". Said he'd checked with a protocols person and yes, the "unqualified resignation" is a category used to get rid of someone or used when someone is forced out, something used, "usually at the higher levels to keep someone, usually an officer, from facing embarrassment, either at the time of discharge or later".

I asked about the list of achievements, etc, and he said there is nothing there that isn't either the result of a training, most required but possibly one or two elective, or they are the automatic result of what the UNIT (not necessarily an individual) did in the way of military duties. There is nothing, according to him, that wasn't completely triggered by the "usual activities of being a minor officer on duty during a conflict".

Which brings up another thing; he questioned why Miller had advanced no higher in at least the 3 years he was in active duty; said "something's wrong there."

He said there is definitely enough there to warrant suspicion, just on that one document, that something was "seriously wrong with Mr Miller or his performance". When I asked about the "serious disability" Miller himself mentioned, he said that if it had a military cause it was likely in one way or another either a cover for "sexual preference issues" or psychological issues, being as the man shows no sign of physical ailments. He suggested that one of those might be behind the 'unqualified resignation" code.

Now granted this is not definitive, but from somebody with 30 years of experience examining discharge papers, it is still a very interesting take on the reasons WHY Miller's active duty service may have been cut short, and what that might say about his personality and his ability to perform the duties of the job that he is seeking.

Along those same lines I sat in the audience at last night's debate and closely watched Miller's face when he was called out on some of his more outrageous statements, as well as his unethical politicking with North Star Borough computers in Fairbanks, and I could see his jaw tighten in anger numerous times, as his body literally stiffened up in barely restrained rage at being confronted with his own behaviors and remarks.

My feeling while watching him is that he is a powder keg just waiting for his fuse to be lit.  My only question is how much damage can somebody like that do with Senatorial power at his disposal?

Well, the East Germans weren't keeping people of Jewish descent from escaping over/under/through the wall. There weren't too many of those left at that point. But anyone should be appalled at Miller suggesting East German Communist government efforts at keeping their citizens at home was a model to be emulated.

The thing about living with someone who has anger issues is that you learn which buttons not to push so they don't go over the edge on you.

I can't help wishing however, while meaning no harm, that sometime during the next nine days, something causes Joe to have a major tantrum in public, on camera.

Australians have a couple of terms for this, both of which I find amusingly appropriate for Joe Miller. One is chucking a tanty and the other is spitting the dummy.

30 plus years Alaskan here, and registered "Undeclared" until Palin became VP pick. Changed my registration to Democrat, until she is off the political stage. She is a huge embarassment to the GOP, and when they get the backbone to face her down for the lies she spreads, then I'll go back to "Undeclared".

Myself, and family members are voting for McAdams. If Miller wins, because of split votes, the people who talked her into being a write-in candidate can be responsible. McAdams is on the ballot. He is the only one who is the "people's candidate" - Murkowski and Miller's campaigns are largely supported by corporations.

"My only question is how much damage can somebody like that do with Senatorial power at his disposal?"

Well, study your German history and see just HOW much damage someone like him can do with that kind of power at his disposal. Remember, the party took power incrementally. They started out just like these other Rogue players, on the fringes. Then they got into the seats of govt, small numbers that grew and grew. Finally, Hitler grabbed the reins after the fire at the Reichstag and then became a dictator, with all of his cronies in positions of power to cover his flank and keep him in power. The parallels are so similar that it almost appears that they are following the same playbook. Only this time, a charismatic woman wishes to be the queen of the motherland, with all of her "patriots" (volk or good germans) as her followers...who will gladly perform any heinous act against the perceived enemy, if the queen wishes it done. And we have a SCOTUS that will consider it all "legal". The Millers and Palins of the world need to be kept as far away from the power they seek because their psychological makeup makes them a threat to our democracy. They cannot help themselves. It is a mental illness.

Sounds like Mr. Miller has the same problem as you-know-who: "How DARE the people ask me any questions that I don't want to answer"!

Being defensive is NOT a good strategy for getting elected.

Since he has publically stated that he is SEVERELY DISABLED, then you the public have the right to ask him to explain the disability. He doesn't get to let that one go unanswered. What a wuss!

I also note that Mr. Miller has not apologized to Mr. Hopfinger for the shoddy way "Dropzone Bill" treated a member of the press. One would think if Mr. Miller would like to gain votes from some 'undecideds' that he would try to make nice instead of turning off even more voters.

Gosh I hope for you guys in Alaska that Scott McAdams wins!!

I will say I have questioned his Yale Grad status as well. It simply doesn't ring true at all. Nor does anything with his military status. Oh hell NOTHING about Miller rings true other than the fact he's an asshole.

I also agree with the email that something is way off with his DD214. As I mentioned before the fact that he altered his re-entry code is very disturbing.

Generally if someone is redacting they black it out. In Joe's case he changed things - most glaringly the re-entry code. If he didn't want to share that he should have blacked it out. But that would have told its own story so he changed it to say NA. The military would always put a code there because it is always applicable.

We already know he didn't get a full merit scholarship to Yale (as he claimed)since Yale has never given full merit scholarships. He lied there and 15 years later is still paying student loans off. Maybe it's time to find out where he did graduate from.

  15. Miller"s discharge code only falls under an "officers resignation".

So WHY did he resign after 3 years and 3 months?

It seems like an odd length of service, but then again he wasn't discharged, he resigned.

If he were discharged the code would have been KND, not FND.

There is a HUGE difference between a "voluntary discharge" and a "resignation".

If you go to the link, you get a better picture of what your e-mail referred to.

You don't have to be military to "get the picture".

I think Miller is another closet gay GOBPer, like all the rest of the self-righteousness ones are: or hooked on hookers or having affairs etc.

She was lazy, over confident, and took you Alaskans that supported her in the past for granted. She had a huge war chest that she didn't want to spend on a primary. Well, she got schooled, and now she pays the price.

So now, you wind up with a retarded three way race with a write in candidate polling alongside Miller. This basically gives the seat to Gestapo Joe. Lisa does not deserve anyone's vote...she ran a shitty primary campaign. Scott McAdams is the only choice in this race. It is still vitually impossible for her to win as a write in candidate. Don't waste your vote, or you'll be stuck with Gestapo Joe for the next 6 years.

Think about this...if Joe wins, he could very well be indicted or forced to resign over any of of the various issues still swirling around right now. 8:26 partial answer to
"are any (or all) of joe's kids adopted?"

"After the war, Miller was accepted to law school at Yale, Harvard and the University of Chicago. The Army wanted to send him to a cheaper school, but Miller instead opted for early release and attended Yale on a scholarship, said Randy DeSoto, Miller's campaign spokesman, who attended the academy and armored warfare training with him.

Miller and his wife, Kathleen, who had two children from a previous marriage, one with Miller and one on the way, rented an attic in New Haven, Conn. Miller, a handyman, fashioned it into a livable apartment."

    http://articles.latimes.com/2010/sep/07/nation/la-na-alaska-miller-20100907/2

He thinks hes rilly smurt too.

" Gregory Feeley, who met Miller in New Haven, said they once discussed that year's presidential elections, when Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush and Ross Perot were in a three-way race.

"He said very simply and very succinctly that all three of them were stupid. Absolutely stupid. He bore down on the word with obvious disdain in his voice," Feeley said. "It became very plain that he felt they were less intelligent than he was, and that was his criterion.""

"I think that our leaders have got to be transparent… I think when we made mistakes we need to admit to it and drive on. I think if you’re aware of problem… [unintelligable] You end up with somebody in office that you don’t really know who they are. I mean, if you really knew about Obama’s background, being surrounded by progressives and, in fact, even communists, you’d have a better understanding of where this administration is headed… The press should be aggressive, the questions should be asked and ought to be answered."

Great writting and investigation into possible reasons why Miller got discharged from the military. While I always thought he was discharge for psychological reasons, I don't know if it was for anger or not, but I certainly believe it was probably for psychological problem. I'm sure we will never know because I doubt he will ever allow his military records from being released. Even if his employment records are released, we will probably still not know the reason he was released if it involved a psychological problem, because those records can not be released. If their is not a clear reason for him being released, it might be a clearer indication he does have a psycological problem.

Ben Stein is a very conservative individual, and for him not to support Miller says a lot. That should also be a red flag for members of the Tea Party if they don't want to see their party and reputation damage any more than it is already.

The discharge creates more questions than it answers. Officer misbehavior is generally covered up with vague codes, like Miller's. If you look at the placement of Miller's separation code in the Army manual, it falls in the middle of codes for a number of behavioral problems. Officers don't do that stuff, so they get a generic code. What we need now is a copy of Miller's disability retirement papers. He should be in the military Retired Pay system, drawing benefits as a partial or full disability. That would be another Federal payment to add to his monthly collection. He doesn't appear disabled in his moose ads. What qualifies him as severely disabled?

    4:53,

just google "how long does it take to make captain"

    Some Results

It depends on the year group you are commissioned with, but the answer is somewhere between 3-4 years. The difference has nothing to do with ability (or sucking up). Getting promoted to captain is pretty much automatic (again depending on the year promotion rates are usually above 95%).Source(s):CAPT US Army

Becoming a Captain in the Army does not necessarily have to do with time but skill and experience.

2 to 3 years in the Marine Corp.

Marines - The armed forces offer a highly structured environment, and part of that includes an established system of rank and promotion. There are separate rank systems for enlisted Marines and commissioned officers. On the whole, Marine officers move up according to the following schedule: from Second Lieutenant to First Lieutenant after two years, Captain after four (Note: Marines) , Major after 10, Lieutenant Colonel after 16, Colonel after 22, and the General officer ranks at some point thereafter. Generally speaking, rising through the ranks in the Marines takes longer than it does in the Army, since fewer spots become available in the former over the same period of time.

    Conclusion

For such an exceptional guy such as Miller, surely he would have made Captain before he resigned his commission for unspecified reasons.

  43. Taxpayers are entitled to know how & why Joe Miller got out of his 5 year commitment to the Army after serving only 3 years. He graduated from West Point Military Academy with a taxpayer funded college education.

    http://joemiller.us/download/DD214-Joseph%20Miller-redacted.pdf

Miller’s DD214 shows he entered active duty on 5-24-89 and his Separation date was 9-1-92, having served 3 years, 3 months and 7 days. The reason for separation was “miscellaneous reasons – unqualified resignation”. The Separation Code was given as FND and the Separation Authority was AR 635-120, Chap 3. (This is now outdated and replaced by a newer code, but suffice it to say, this was pre-DADT, if ya' know what I mean.)

Researching AR635-120, I only came up with the following PDF:

    b. It is essential that all facts indicating homosexual tendencies, or acts, be recorded properly. The file will consist of the following documents in addition to that required by AR 635-120:
    (1) Report of investigation will include but not be limited to-
(a.) Statement of date and place of birth.
    (b) Amount of active service.
    (c) Date and current period of service.
    (2) Statements of witnesses (see UCMJ, art. 31).
    (3) Medical evaluation reports as specified in paragraph 5-9.
    (4) An individual’s statement in his own behalf, if it is desired.

The only other reference was for second failure of selection for promotion, which would not apply to Miller since he was only a junior officer.

    Conclusion: Joe Miller is g g g g happy????

DADT was not until 1993. Joe Miller's “miscellaneous reasons – unqualified resignation” was in 1991, pre-DADT.

Joe Miller said he had a disability, but would not state what his disability is. He seems to sit, stand, move, run and even mow over an 8 yr old kid with ease while running away from the reporter. How much are taxpayers forking over for his "disability"? If it is the "disability" I suspect from above, there ain't no cure for that, and with the crowd of militia he-man types with whom he associates, that would be a 100% "disability"!

What is it with these "disabled" veterans flocking to Alaska - William "DropZone Bill" Fulton is retired on 75% disability, but he handcuffed Tony Hopfinger. Did you SEE the size of Tony Hopfinger? He is a big dude, not a scrawny kid like one of Fulton's helpers! Is there a VA facility in Alaska that verifies these "disabilities" or are they members of the mafia, er, militia as well?

  44. Option B:
One more thing about that “miscellaneous reasons – unqualified resignation”. In the more current Army Regulations:

    Page 28:
3-5. Rules for processing unqualified resignation
    a. Any officer on AD (for more than 90 calendar days) may tender a resignation under (his paragraph except when action is pending that could result in resignation for the good of the Service; officer is under a suspension of favorable actions, pending investigation, under charges; or any other unfavorable or derogatory action is pending.
b- .Normally, resignations will not be accepted unless on the requested date of separation the officer has fulfilled the service obligation below.
    (1) Graduates of fully funded commissioning programs must* complete the ADSO incurred by participation in such programs. However, this obligation may be waived if the monies are recouped.

I don’t think Joe Miller was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. In which case, how would he have been able to repay the U.S. Army for his college education at West Point (which would have been in the THOUSANDS of dollars) AND then afford to go to 3 years of Yale Law School????

My conclusion: Option A is more likely.
