Morality is not determined by the church you attend nor the faith you embrace. It is determined by the quality of your character and the positive impact you have on those you meet along your journey

The Rally to Restore Sanity was, I must say, a little insane.
Look I have no real idea of how big Glenn Beck's rally was, you my be surprised to learn I did not attend. However THIS rally was.....GINORMOUS!
I am notorious for not being able to estimate crowd size, but the number that was thrown out during the rally was 150,000 and I would not doubt it one little bit.
The crowd, which was so closely packed together that I think many of us would be considered legally married in several states along the Bible Belt, was made up of both young and old, white and brown, progressive and liberal, coke AND Pepsi drinkers, and.....well you get the idea.
I arrived before nine in the morning, and ALREADY there were several thousands of people in attendance. And that crowd continued to grow until it reached from East Seaton park to the Washington Monumnet.

My favorite sign was "I can spell".
ReplyDeleteYusuf & Ozzie dueling Peace & Crazy Trains, and the OJays calling it a draw with Love Train, were the best surprises. I'm SO glad that was kept a secret.
I'm glad you got to experience it, Gryphen. I wish I were there!
It was a wonderful change from the political frenzy that has overtaken the country. Wonderful to see so many people who want to restore sanity, and to make fun of all the fear tactics we've been put through.
ReplyDeleteGlad it was a wonderful time Gryph - Several sites (HuffPo) have some great pictures of signs.
ReplyDeleteLove the one that was "Think outside the FOX"
Nice to see the "sane" people come together.
One of the things I liked best was the age range of the participants. It seemed that half the crowd was in their twenties and half baby boomers. The people in the middle had to drive their kids to soccer games.
ReplyDeleteLooked like so much fun! I watched the whole thing on TV and loved every minute of it. I hope you've enjoyed your trip to DC. It's one of my favorite cities in the US! I love everything about it! Squeeze in as much sight seeing as you can...you'll be exhausted but very glad you did. Don't skip the holocaust museum!
ReplyDeleteThe absence of Cell and WiFi is curious.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if it because there were so many cells jammed next to each other that their signals zeroed each other out of if it was a security thing.
Dlad you went. Weather looked pretty descent too.
87,000 at becks nonsense and that number is official.
ReplyDeleteIt was amazing! And the age range was from infant to seniors. Lots and lots of twenty and thirty something hipsters, funny signs, all around great atmosphere! I hope you had fun Gryphen!
ReplyDeleteHere's some more pics from a local blogger I always read:
http://www.bluevirginia.us/diary/2164/more-photos-at-the-sanityfear-rally?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter
My cell battery died, and like you I couldn't get reception.
WTF is with the Faux report? I read it with a negative tone...
ReplyDeletehttp://www.foxnews.com/us/2010/10/30/stewarts-rally-sanity-brings-urgency-chage/
(copying in case those asshats change it):
“Good luck trying to get through that crowd to the stage.”
Those were the first words I heard within 15 minutes of joining the large crowd that flocked to the National Mall Saturday for the Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear hosted by comedians Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert.
To say that you couldn’t see the stage, or even hear it, wouldn’t be an exaggeration— many had to climb a tree (literally) to even catch a glimpse of the one jumbo TV screen.
“We did the march-of-the-penguins walk in the crowd for about an hour,” Georgetown University student Anam Raheem told me. “But it was too crowded; we had to turn back.”
Thousands of rally goers brought signs and costumes in support of politically hot-button issues.
“I came to meet some people,” said Mark Feeney, a resident of Buffalo, New York who sported a green outfit with a sign that displayed the benefits of marijuana. “But we have to be smart, not stupid. If we legalize pot, we’ll create more revenue and jobs.”
Although Proposition 19, which would legalize recreational marijuana in California, was one of the more common issues seen on signs, other topics were equally supported, such as abortion, equality for gays, space travel, and most vehemently, backlash against the Tea Party movement.
“I came to have fun,” Pennsylvania resident Eric Hafner said, “But we need to also show people that extremism is really overblown.”
Tea Party candidate Christine O’Donnell was most widely targeted, with many rally goers dressed as witches or giant tea bags, holding signs that read, “Tea Party rallies need more tea.”
Despite both Stewart and Colbert’s appeal to a younger generation, there was an eclectic age range of rally goers, including marijuana-supporting seniors.
“We love both the ‘Daily Show’ and ‘The Colbert Report,'” said Diane Gatley who is 61. “Back to sanity for us. They’re truthy.”
Although the stage and entertainment was unseeable for at least half the rally goers there, there was a sense of community support that’s hard to find on a daily basis.
As one rally goer attempted to scale a tree for a better view of the stage, the crowd chanted, “Yes, you can!"
Weather was perfect. All the people attending were in great spirits. We were packed, no picnics on the lawn at this Rally. No cranky old people either.
ReplyDeleteMy dog decided this morning was a good time for him to act weird and get me all concerned. So, I chose making sure my dog was ok and I didn't have to rush him to the vet over sanity/fear. In retrospect, I'm glad since it seems it was HELLA more crowded than they even envisioned. Husband and I watched it on our big screen HDTV and enjoyed the hell out of it.
ReplyDeleteHope you had a great time, Gryph!
I have never seen such a crowd, but then I did not attend Obama's inauguration.
ReplyDeleteIt was amazing to see the sheer mass of good willed people.
M from MD
I've been in tears watching it on TV. Why? Because we live in a country where we can (at the same event) lightheartedly and seriously call for sanity. I'm glad you were there to represent us and add to the body count!
ReplyDeleteWhat a terrific experience Gryph! I'm so glad you got to be there. I watched the whole thing and hung out at HP with all my virtual buddies. It was fun doing that too!
ReplyDeleteI watched it on the internetS - enjoyed it all, but I agree with 2:36 pm - that whole "train" thing was hilarious! loved father guido, too, it's been a long time since I've seen him.
ReplyDeleteIt was pretty amazing! I went through two full sets of batteries and am working on a third in my camera. I won't be leaving here until Monday and not downloading photos until I get back, but I will send you some of my best photos if you want me to, Gryphen. I'm so tired I can barely move after walking around D.C. for two full days...and another one tomorrow...Hoorah! This is the friendliest bunch of people I have ever been around...striking up conversations on planes, restaurants, over coffee, and all over the mall. I am so glad I came, and it was great to meet you, Malia, and the blog commentators at Malia's book signing.
ReplyDeleteWhat an inspiration! Share the wealth!
ReplyDeleteHey Gryphen, did you see this??
ReplyDeletehttp://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2010/10/sarah-palin-calls-joe-miller-a-lost-cause-quotes-skopes-monkey-trial-attorney.php
Since we all took Sarah off out twitter lists, this gem got through unnoticed!
I was sorry I didn't run into you.It was really a great crowd. We made friends with everybody around us and everybody was soooo happy.
ReplyDeleteThank you, thank you, thank you for being a normal, rational human being actually in attendance, not interested in faking anything about the event for any reason at all! We watched the Huffpo and NYT live feeds. No armed thugs and lots of really funny and correctly spelled posters. We are all vindicated, and very much not alone.
ReplyDeletefor over 6 months now, my car has sported a home-made bumper sticker that reads "I'm a Happy Member of the SEA Party - I'm sick of the endless anger".
ReplyDeletei even go to Tea Party meetings in that car (I'm what one young friend calls an Infiltrator) and yet, although i've seen teabaggers reading my sticker, none have said anything to me about it.
when i read that the Rally to Restore Sanity was happening, i was so pleased. at last, someone doing something positive. yay!
thanks to all of you (us) who made the rally a success. thanks for the reminder that we're not all filled with fear and anxiety over every little thing. thanks for sharing the joy, for i live without t.v., and i've enjoyed being with everyone through the internet.
happy happy days to us all, come what may!
What an excellent event, wish I could have been there. How lucky for all of you who did get to go.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite signs:
I'm for separation of Church and Hate.
I'm high as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore!
My opinions are nuanced and they don't fit on this sign (written with letters that got smaller with each word)
Anger is not a policy.
Glad that you had and are having a great time Gryphen.
ReplyDeleteI just got back at 7:30 pm taking Metro and driving. Packed like I have never seen it before. You could not move at all. I was across from the National Gallery that's as close as I could get to the stage.
Had an absolutely great time. Lots of pics and lots of great people.
Stewart: 'We Live in Hard Times, Not End Times'
ReplyDeleteI knew the moment he said those words they'd be 'headlines' and be all over the internet and they are :)
I was able to watch on Comedy Central from my living room here in New Mexico...and follow a constant stream of tweets viw PalinGates. Very cool.
ReplyDeleteTHe program was somewhat disorganized. Skits that would have worked in a set were awkward...HOWEVER....MISSION ACCOMPLISHED! The message as I saw it was unity....caring for others...and above all sanity...not the crazy shit being shoved down out throats 24-7 by all the news media.
Inspite of some of the awkward moments, it was a great event. Some tweets noted streets OUTSIDE the Mall were jammed with people. Way cool.
As Cat Stevens fan from the 70s, I was delighted to see him - Yusef - the dude sounds as good as he did in the 1970s! Having the duel between the Peace Train and the Train off the tracks sttled by the Love train was right on. Message Received.
The bit with Father Gadouchi (SP?) was just perfect! The Supreme Being did not pick favorites!
NOW GET OUT AND VOTE TO MOVE THIS COUNTRY FORWARD!
Was with you in spirit as I watched the rally on the Net--some brilliant stuff for sure! Wish we could have gone, but we had a last-minute job to do today. Thanks for sharing and letting us know how it was firsthand. What a crowd! Enjoy the rest of your stay--we'll be working the polls in Central PA on Tuesday morning and will keep you posted as well. YES WE CAN DO IT AGAIN!!
ReplyDeleteWowee! NBC estimated that some 150,000 people showed up!
ReplyDeleteLotsa white folks.
ReplyDeleteAnd all those people were real Americans, nary a subversive, commie, fascist or "ferriner" among them. Maybe a few hippies though. What an experience for you Gryphen (and everyone else) to be part of! Congratulations!
ReplyDeleteGryphen,
ReplyDeleteI'm still sitting here in my hotel room in Bethesda. I have never seen so many people in one place in my life. The Mall was packed, the metro was packed, the streets were crowded in some places with people shoulder to shoulder. My daughter and I took Amtrak from Atlanta to Union Station. I was overjoyed to see so many different people come together in one place to show America that the MSM has failed to do its job. I hope the MSM got the message loud and clear. My daughter and I will take the train back to GA tomorrow night after a full day of sightseeing.
Jon Stewart Rally Attracts Estimated 215,000
ReplyDeleteAn estimated 215,000 people attended a rally organized by Comedy Central talk show hosts Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert Saturday in Washington, according to a crowd estimate commissioned by CBS News.
The company AirPhotosLive.com based the attendance at the "Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear" on aerial pictures it took over the rally, which took place on the Mall in Washington. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 10 percent.
CBS News also commissioned AirPhotosLive.com to do a crowd estimate of Glenn Beck's "Restoring Honor" rally in August. That rally was estimated to have attracted 87,000 people. Amid criticism from conservatives that the estimate was low, CBS News detailed the methodology behind it here.
TBD reported that because of the high turnout many would-be rally attendees retreated to bars to watch the event.

the roots rocked - i could have taken 24 hours of the funk!!! but a half hour of them plus john legend = a real treat for the soul.
ReplyDeleteall the performers were amazing - the peace/fear/love train with yusuf, ozzie, and the o'jay's was brilliant! (though i think even jon sings a bit better than ozzie, and that's a low bar; jon's a cute dancer though).
through spectacle, music, comedy, and then plain speech jon tried to make the point he tries to make every night - that we are all in this together and that we are stronger as a country than the fears and problems we face, as long as we work together.
a lot of the signs were priceless, too - my favorite of the day escapes my mind, but i like the one you chose, gryph, as well.
glad you got to go and hope you have a great time meeting your blog readers and other sane people looking to linger a little while after this wonderful show.
safe travels home.
OT: Someone called JJinWY has been tweeting like crazy:
ReplyDeleteDid Karl Rove really send his operatives to Wasilla and MatSu hospital with lotsa cash? Is #palin fake pregnancy story being checked? OOPS
Scuttlebutt on the net and in Wasilla; Is Karl ROve really getting thru and ready to reaveal #palin fake preganacy after elections? #tcot
And many, many more. Has anyone else heard anything about this? Is Rove trying to expose her or cover her tracks? We know he can afford to.
I totally agree - the rally was awesome and a much needed dose of "sanity" with great music and entertainment - I have no idea how my photos came out - I just held the camera up, pointed at various spots in the crowd when I saw cool signs and hoped for the best. I loved the folks who had "jump rope with a Muslim" (if I could jump rope I would have jumped a bit, but lots of folks were lined and enjoying it).
ReplyDeleteAt the end I got to wander over to the huge drumming circle where folks were dancing away - it was awesome - my family indulged me (while pretending not to know me LOL) and let me dance to my hearts content with fellow sane Americans free form dancing (I put my one lesson in belly dancing to good use).
I even got to meet two folks from Alasaka! totally by chance as we are wandering about at the end I spotted their sign.
Wish I could have met you Gryphen to shake your hand and say thank you in person. But I met and chatted with a LOT of awesome reasonable "sane" folks.
It was a day to remember and the best birthday I have ever had (well actually the second best - because 14 years ago on that birthday we arrived home from China with our daughter in my arms - and nothing can top that day!)
Bright Blessings to all and don't forget VOTE for sanity on Tuesday.
CBS News crowd estimate (the same company that estimated the 87,000 Beck rally attendance) was 215,000.
ReplyDeleteClearly another blatant distortion by leftist lamestream media. ;-)
http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162-20021284-503544.html
Gryphen... have you ever seen that many people together in one spot?
ReplyDeleteIt was more than 1/3 of Alaska's entire population.
It all just makes me smile. I love the signs. My heart is full.
ReplyDeleteFor my two cents worth the best things I saw was Mavis Staples and the Mythbusters.Mavis with her sweet southern soul was a show stopper in my humble opinion. The Mythbusters were funny and smart just like their Discovery show. All in all an excellent show and unlike Becks snoozefest it was funny.Thank you Jon and Steven.
ReplyDeleteAnon 2:51:
ReplyDeleteNo, the soccer families were there too. We told our kids coach a month ago that both boys would be missng this weekend's games to attend the rally with us!
One of the signs that had me laughing the hardest was carried by three yound men, high school or college age, with a picture of Chrisie o'donnell and the caption
ReplyDelete"But, we Like masturbation"
It was really funny to see three good loking guys with that sign.
Bullshit.
ReplyDeletehere were easily 400,000 people there.
Sorry.
We were packed.
Could not move.
The sie strets were packd.
People couldn't move.
400k.
Easily.
Those of us who were there know it. Don't give a shit what is reported anymore.
It was an amazing day. Next to the inauguration, it was the biggest crowd I've ever witnessed. Loved the signs and talking to so many interesting folks.
ReplyDeleteThe people look so NORMAL. No teabaggers, inbred lookin people. These are nice people. Why don't we get to see more of this, that WE are the real americans?
ReplyDeleteAnother accurate count of the crowd will come from Metro. At 2pm they counted ridership at 349,000. That's about 49,000 over average for a Saturday. So I'm thinking total attendance for the Rally would be around 300,000 when you count return trips.
ReplyDeleteIt was a fabulous atmosphere wasn't it? I got loads of pics if you're interested and video of the people STREAMING in like waves - we were just amazed at the number of people - it was really crazy.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite sign was "Jesus, save us from your followers." Closely followed by "Even tempered like hell."
The MARC conductor said he had never seen it so busy (I know there was the Marine Corp Marathon today too). Glad you enjoyed it!
T
One of my fave signs had COD under the red circle-X, with the text "I masturbate and I vote. Sometimes simultaneously"
ReplyDeleteOh, and "The Tea Party -- Puting the dumb in Freedom"
ReplyDeleteWhere the hell were you after the rally? You missed out, dude.
ReplyDeleteThe Rally looked like a lot of fun! It certainly got good coverage here in Australia, including from this humble blogger at http://danieljames.com.au/?p=1021
ReplyDeleteI saw where a right wingy friend of mine posted on his FB page a link to John Stewart's speech. He said that he was moved by it and that we need to join together as Americans!
ReplyDeleteWOW! I never thought I'd see that. Evidence of the positive effect of the rally!
Thanks John and Stephen.
VernD
I am so glad I went! It was comforting and reassuring to see people turn out to restore civil discourse, identify problems and work together for solutions. I estimate 90% of the signs I saw were focused on the purpose of the rally. One funny one about COD's history of activism for "pure" sex read
ReplyDeleteAtheist for Masturbation
It was unreal how tightly packed the crowd was. Afterwards I commented that if we had been any closer we'd have been wise to wear full body condoms:) I made a huge mistake to leave the grass area believing I could return to or near where I had been standing. I was stunned that since I had arrived 40 minutes earlier the side street was packed and within minutes more tightly packed. Next rally like this I may bring a pair of stilts.
It was so encouraging to know the majority has not gone off nor followed extremists who throw down their gauntlets, resort to lies terrozing people spewing crazy venom for self interest and truly do not give a damn about citizens or the nation.
Funny story: My son in law picked me up from the Metro in Vienna VA. He shared that on the day of the Beck rally he helped my niece move into her dorm at Georgetown U. He explained that vehicles would pull up to the curb, students and their help quickly load large bins on wheels. He said Beck rally attendees had no regard for the students moving in plodding along on the sidewalk with their canes, walkers. He said "there was no copromise..they could have used the other side of the street..they blocked or obstructed people from moving into college!" I said, that sums up that group politically and how they must live their lives. My son in law is truly a fine person raised to respect others. He was aghast to witness the rally attendees disregard despite the major activity of move in day.
I loved how Stewart started the show off announcing we needed to have a "count off"..people shout their number and tell a bit about their self lol so we could get a "count" on the crowd.
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite signs, besides my own, of course, was one I caught accidentally in the frame of my camera shot. "Ruly Crowd". Perfect.
ReplyDelete
