Right wing religious groups fight against anti-bullying legislation for fear that it promotes an acceptance of homosexuality. Are you thinking "WTF?" Yeah, me too.

From Think Progress:

Last week, Rutgers University freshman Tyler Clementi jumped to his death after two classmates secretly recorded his sexual relationship with a man and broadcasted it over the internet. Tragically, Clementi marks the fourth gay student to commit suicide in three weeks because of anti-gay harassment from fellow students. Seth Walsh, 13, Asher Brown, 13, and Billy Lucas, 15, also took their own lives last month because fellow students bullied them in school.

Many states across the country are taking laudable steps to enact measures that bolster administrators’ ability to protect students who face such harassment. However, despite the evidence supporting the need, right-wing lawmakers and activists insist that anti-bullying measures are nothing more than insidious tools of the “homosexual agenda”:

– The American Family Association of Michigan has spent years decrying a proposed anti-bullying measure as “a Trojan Horse to sneak [homosexual activists'] special rights agenda into law” and to “legitimize homosexual behavior” which is “a practice scientifically proven to result in a dramatically higher incidence of domestic violence, mental illness, illegal drug use, promiscuity, life-threatening disease, and premature death.” The bill “died in 2008 in the state Senate because senators could not agree” on whether to address bullying based on sexual orientation and gender identity in the measure.

– In Minnesota, Republican gubernatorial candidate Tom Emmer said he would not sign the anti-bullying Safe Schools For All bill because “I don’t want the government” instead of parents to be on “the front line of defense of our children.” Indeed, Emmer voted against and Gov. Tim Pawlenty (R) vetoed the same bill in 2009 after the right-wing Minnesota Family Council pushed legislators to reject the bill in 2009 because it would “promote acceptance of homosexuality.”

– The right-wing Christian media ministry Focus on the Family is attacking an anti-bullying standard on the federal level. Insisting that bullying prevention is being “hijacked by activists” who are “politicizing or sexualizing the issue,” Focus on the Family’s Candi Cushman claims that the anti-bullying bill currently before Congress “cater[s] to a narrow political agenda” that “becomes a gateway for homosexuality promotion in school.” In their current back-to-school guide “equipping” parents with tools against the “sneaky” gay agenda, Cushman told parents to look out for bullying seminars, diversity lessons, and “cute little pictures of furry animals” as “red flags” signaling the “gay agenda.”

If this were forty, to forty five, years ago how many of us believe that the argument then would have been "The anti-bullying agenda is being hi-jacked by racial equality activists?"  Same argument, just targeting a different minority.

Obviously this is ridiculous and feeds into the Fundamentalist's idea that homosexuality is contagious and that the more accepted it is the more likely that the gays will be viewed as equal to the breeders that are now the dominant force in America.  And doesn't THAT remind you of the Teabagger's fear of brown people coming over the border in Mexico, their fear of Socialism replacing Capitalism in our government, and their barely contained rage at the African American sitting in the White House?

It seems like everything that drives these groups is fear of change.  Fear that what they have always seen as "normal" will be forever altered and that they will no longer be able to victimize groups different then their own like they did back in the "good old days,"  Did you ever notice that the "good old days" seemed to be much better for the white males in this country over every other demographic?

"Hey Frank!  Remember how we used to be able to make those lewd jokes around the break room, without fear of one of these skirts accusing us of sexual harassment?  Yep, them was the good old days alright!"

Sadly it is natural for the dominant groups to harass and bully, and even kill, those different from themselves.  We see that same savagery play out in the animal world all of the time.

However the difference is that we are self aware.  We can choose to resist our natural instincts, and learn to accept, and even care, about those who are not exactly like us. That is what makes us human. And for those of you with faith in the bible, I am sure you have read that humans were made in God's image, therefore to use the abilities that God bestowed on his children is to honor God, don't you think?

I would think that if EVERY Christian stopped for just a minute, and asked themselves "How would Jesus treat this person?" That it would fundamentally change our county, hell even our world, for the better.

Or am I simply misunderstanding the message that Jesus tried to teach mankind?

Of course you're not misunderstanding Jesus' message to mankind. As I've said before, the rightwing fundamentalists aren't real Christians. They wrap themselves in the mantle of Christianity as a cover for their brutal agenda. Believe me, these are the direct descendants - in mentality and ideology - of the very mob that insisted on crucifying Jesus. Can you imagine what the response would be if Jesus showed up in front of Focus on the Family and told them to be perfect, they must sell everything they own, give the proceeds to the poor, and follow him? Within an hour, they would have a press release out denouncing this anti-American "Socialist."

To add to my last post, I just want to emphasize again how important it is understand that these people are frauds, rather than waste your time wondering why they don't get the message of Jesus. They get it, loud and clear, and have perverted that message for their own nefarious purposes. As for the blind sheep who follow them, I have no sympathy for these people either - because instead of reading the Bible themselves, they allow these charlatans to interpret it for them.

  3. This is really Old Testament of these a-holes. All too often administration and teachers do nothing. I was bullied in school and when I struck back, I got in trouble for it. I asked more than once, "Why is it ok for them to beat the crap out of me and when I defend myself, I'm the bad guy?" I never got an answer on it. What's wrong with this picture?

They are so homophobic that it keeps them from acknowledging that these measures are not only about preventing anti-gay bullying. Kids have been bullied for such things as race, appearance, the way they dress, and even for doing well in school. I totally agree that they are fake Christians who use religion to bamboozle gullible people. At the same time, I also have no respect for people who seem to think that being religiously devout absolves them from the need to analyze and think critically. Those are the kinds of people who are most likely to be Palinbots and to swallow the toxic nonsense the Tea Party spews.

Yep, they're frauds. In their religion, their relationships, and their finances. We used to have a pair of these assholes living "up the hill" from us in our 10 home hood. They were sure that the evil homosexuals, Hillary Clinton included, were trying to force the government of the USA to ram homosexuality down their kid's throats. (Sorry about the visual).
This pair of hypocrites change churches like Tiger Woods changed mistresses, declared bankruptcy in 12/09, and then mailed back the house keys to their mortgage holding bank, leaving it with a $690K white elephant to try and sell in SE IN in a depressed real estate market.
Did I mention this asshole worked for a firm that got home loans for people who could never qualify for them at a real bank after being fired for incompetence at the only industry in our tiny town? He still does work for a different firm doing the same thing and I often wonder what they'd think about his hypocrisy...
Oh he also ran a "church" out of his basement.

In light of what has happened over the last couple of weeks, and the current flap about Michigan's ASSistant AG, I just want to cry for the humane race. Bullying is Bullying and it needs to stop. To single out someone for doing something against the law, or being hypocritical while running for office is one thing, but to single someone out because you don't like what they do in their private time is intolerable and we need to stop these morons. Fundamentalist Christians are the plague against our future. Once we get this mindset out of the conversation, only then we will move forward. Right now, we are tumbling back to the stone age.

  7. I am with Anon. So true these people are calling themselves Christians but they are not anything at all what one would glean from the Bible they espouse. I cannot respect those who flock to there house of malcontent every sunday and think they are helping the human situation. Think for yourself for cryin out loud. No ignorance is bliss.

If you try to match the words of Jesus with the actions of this Jesus-invoking horde you'll go crazy.

One has nothing to do with the other.

Let's just stop calling them fundamentalist Christians, they're fake Christians, period. Believe me, there are millions of humble, decent, kind Christians in this country and throughout the world, representing churches who do try to get messages out to the media about their initiatives and efforts to the media - but instead, the media has allowed and thus legitimized imposters like Sarah Palin and Focus on the Family to speak for the religion instead.

And so a growing number of people are now disgusted with Christianity, at the blatant hypocrisy and cruelty displayed by those who claim to be Christian. Thanks mainstream media, for your unforgivable part in allowing this travesty to happen.

  13. It is not the Christians who are bullying these kids... Most are NOT Christians... I was billied in school, I am not gay, I just didn't fit in the crowd and was new to the school. The different with me, I knew how to fight. I grapped one boy (I a female) and beat his @$$ real good and the bullying stopped.

Just because a kid committed suicide, don't mean it is because of a bully or bullies. Just because a person being bully, it may not have anything to do with his/her sexual preference. The Rutgers' student, it was two nasty, mean students who thought it was funny invading someone else privacy. I went to Rutgers, 1977-81... they were open to gay on campus and there were no problems. There were people that will bully anybody who don't fit in their group... I stayed to myself and had just a few friends and crazy, but nice roommates. There one girl that nobody like, because she had sex with a married janitor... I watched some student billying her and mashed her hand in the food line with their tray. I knew some people had nasty evil roommate like the kid committed sucidie, but didn't have the technology we have today.

It NOT about religion, it about BULLYING... It attack anybody who don't fit in and weak... It ONE of the cause of sucidie... many young people suffer depression and are most likely to commit sucidice. Going away to college and being isolated from friends and family can be a problem if the person already suffering depression.

  14. If, as Saray Palin says, her Down's Syndrome child is a creation of and a gift from god then so by god are those who are born gay!!! Don't any of these controle freak bible thumpers EVER read THE BOOK they claim to have faith in and live by!!!

Try replacing the word GAY in the bill with DOWN'S SYNDROME and imagine the child being bullied and terrorized was yours!

Gryphen wrote, "I would think that if EVERY Christian stopped for just a minute, and asked themselves "How would Jesus treat this person?"

Think about this all you bible thumping fundi hypocrites, HOW DO YOU KNOW JESUS WASN'T GAY, BLACK, OR A "BREED"??? OR HIS DECIPLES!

Before you blow a gasket trying to think of an answer with your little two celled brains I say, PROVE IT OR STFU!!!

I like to term the fundies as "X-stains".

They have noting to do with Christ and it avoids using his name in vane.

Well, myj, I can tell you that in my experience, many if not most bullies do, in fact, self-identify as Christians. And, it's hard to argue that it's not about religion when religious groups are fighting against anti-bullying legislation for religious reasons.

The sad truth is that in our culture, boys are often teased for being gay even when they aren't. Of course, it doesn't always end in suicide, but it often does horrible damage, not only to the victims, but also to the entire school atmosphere.

In my high school a few years before I was there, a young man was tormented by groups of kids for being effeminate (he later came out as gay). Everyone in the school knew it was going on, including teachers and the principal. I suppose because the abuse wasn't physical, it wasn't taken seriously. The taunts happened everywhere, in the lunchroom, in the hallways, everywhere. The kids doing the tormenting were almost exclusively Catholic (that's the demographic in our town). One day, the poor kid had enough and attacked one of the worst offenders in the lunchroom.

Who do you think got suspended from school that day?

  17. I don't think there's any use trying to figure out the brains of Christians. They just don't practice what they preach and wouldn't stop for a second and consider that they are exactly the opposite of what they expect others to be. Maybe that's the reason most atheists remain atheists. The example the Christians set would never attract a decent person and hence there is no draw to the fold.

If there is a HELL (I sometimes think it is right here on earth as we are currently living it!) I'm sure Palin, Beck, Hannity, Limbaugh and many others will have front-row seats!

  19. GKerry, I grew up in Colorado Springs in a church that a lot of Focus on the Family employees attended. They don't believe that people are born gay. They claim it is a "lifestyle decision" and cite "scientific evidence" to support that. To me, it's kind of ludicrous to think that kids as young as 13-14 would choose a "lifestyle" that can alienate them from their families, subject them to ridicule, and cause profound identity crises as they grapple to come to terms with this part of who they are. BUT FotF has never specialized in rationality.

My own brother told me his son will not be gay because he "won't allow it." He also said he'd rather have his son become a meth addict than gay. This is the level of irrationality, lack of compassion, and homophobia going on.

Some of these "Christians" feel that "namby-pamby liberals" put too much emphasis on Jesus' teachings about love. I have been out of that milieu for nearly two decades, so I no longer remember how they justify this, but they can spew Bible verses all day long to rationalize their hatred and judgmentalism.

Oh, and they think that if they say it's not hatred, then it's not. No wonder Sarah Palin resonates with these people.
