Now THIS is a Christmas miracle.! And it comes from science, like all good miracles should.

From the Guardian:

A simple reactor that mimics plants by turning sunlight into fuel has been demonstrated in the laboratory, boosting hopes for a large-scale renewable source of liquid fuel.

"We have a big energy problem and we have to think big," said Prof Sossina Haile, at the California Institute of Technology, who led the research.

Haile estimates that a rooftop reactor could produce about three gallons of fuel a day. She thinks transport fuels would be the first application of the reactor, if it goes on to commercial use. But she said an equally important use for the renewable fuels would be to store solar energy so it is available at times of peak demand, and overnight. She says the first improvements that will be made to the existing reactor will be to improve the insulation to help stop heat loss, a simple move that she expects to treble the current efficiency.

The key component is made from the metal cerium, which is almost as abundant as copper, unlike other rare and expensive metals frequently used as catalysts, such as platinum. Therefore, said Haile, availability would not limit the use of the device. "There is nothing cost prohibitive in our set-up," she said. "And there is plenty of cerium for this technology to make a major contribution to global gasoline supplies."

The fossil fuels used by vehicles, ships and aeroplanes pose the biggest challenge in the search for low-carbon energy, as they are highly energy-dense and portable, unlike alternatives such as batteries or nuclear reactors. An efficient, large-scale way of converting solar energy into a renewable liquid fuel could play a major role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and tackling climate change.

You know this could be really good news for Alaska.

I mean it looks like the main components are water and sunshine.

Well we have millions of gallon of water and we have lots of sunsh.....uh.....did I mention we have millions of gallons of water?

Well maybe we could team up with another state?

How about Arizona?  They have LOTS of sunshine, and very little water. Perfect!

The only kink in that plan would be if we screwed it up by sending some of our most ignorant and useless people to their state.  Uh oh.

We can truly thank God for the miracles of science ;-).

    Merry Christmas, Mr. Gryphen.

The Daily Kos has the POTUS Christmas address with Mrs. Obama.
No wonder palin is half crazed with hate and envy.
She could never be as classy and as welcoming as they are.
I don't think palin has EVER made a remark that isn't snarky and mean.

I don't think she realizes how tiresome her continual nasty remarks are.
There is always a place for criticism. But palin, like most of fox news can't move on.
Even when they try to say something nice, there is such a tone to their voices that you don't really believe them.

    Merry Christmas Everyone!!
Let us hope that this coming year will bring us joy and happiness and jobs for those that need them!

Fantastic! Go science! Go Professor Sossina Haile! Go Sunshine and Water!

The practice of scientific discovery only reveals previously unknown wonders of nature, it doesn't manufacture them.

Sometimes the "dogma pendulum" swings too far in the other direction.

I hate to be a Debbie Downer, but if this uses only fresh water it is a no go.
There are already a lot of places where fresh, clean water is scarce and more will be so in the future (and not the far future).
If they can modify this to use salt water or impure gray water, it might be worth while. If not, what would you choose, cheap fuel or water?

    The news came out on Dec. 23, so it is a Festivus miracle, loud and clear! Happy holidays (;

Hope is the foundation of all happiness. Being open to change allows flexibility and possibility.

May the fact that we have survived the past year give us hope to sustain us through another. May we learn, evolve and allow ourselves to be the best we can be.

Whether or not you celebrate Christmas, may you celebrate yourself and the wonder that is you.

Don't worry,... they will just join the millions of other FOOLS already in Arizona. You know,... the ones who vote for the current Governor and her idiotic legislation.

Maybe "The Quitter" can finish out her term there. They do think alike you know !

  9. Way cool article. I have other ideas but that is a step in the right direction. Here's hoping Arizona get's the immigrant's they deserve.

Now the other day i saw an article on a compressed air powered car. This is something that just matches where we live. The Cook inlet is a tidal power to turn water wheels that could make compressed air. I once asked how to best transfer energy and the answer was compressed air. I dont know Gryph i guess we are just to stupid that this could ever work. Best of the day to you an yours from us here in the hamlet.

  10. Anon at 7:01am...impure water can be transformed by orgonite, a open-source substance that restores balance to the environment and that is made and distributed by thousands around the world! Orgonite also neutralises electromagnetic radiation and promotes plant growth.

    @7:01

You can use sunlight to distill water that isn't fresh.
