Feel good story of the morning.
From the Political Punch:
Daniel Hernandez Jr., one of the heroes of the mass shooting in Tucson, Ariz., two weeks ago, tells ABC News that he will be sitting, along with his father, Daniel Hernandez Sr., with Michelle Obama at the State of the Union on Tuesday, which happens to be his 21st birthday.
"I'm both honored and excited to have the opportunity to travel to our nation's Capitol for a once in a lifetime event. Also the chance to bring my father along for his first trip to Washington, D.C. The State of the Union is a pivotal moment because it is our opportunity to find where we are and where we will be going as a nation in this upcoming year," Hernandez said.
Daniel Hernandez, the humble hero of Tucson, deserves a seat of honor everywhere that he goes.
Many people talk about their willingness to sacrifice and to stand up for those in need, but when the chips were down this gentle giant did what many of us could only hope to have the courage to do in similar circumstances.

This is great news and I look forward to seeing it!
ReplyDeleteArizona has a true hero as one of their citizens with this man. I do find it ironic that due to the recently passed 'Papers Please' law, he could potentially be pulled over and detained at some point because of his race.
No Willow, I’m not inviting your dad Horney Toad, I mean Horney Todd to hear me speak. I don’t care what your mother says. Just because your daddy employed many Alaskan women does not make him the number one job creator in Alaska.
ReplyDeleteYeah, this is why it makes me *so proud* that one of the guv's aides immediately suggested checking his immigration status.
ReplyDeleteStay classy, AZ!
No Willow I do not need a 10 minute opening act speaker at the State of the Union. I do not care if your sister took 3rd place on DWTS. Stop calling me!
ReplyDeleteVery cool. :)
ReplyDeleteHe is so young. He demonstrated courage under fire. He provided aid and comfort to a gruesomely wounded woman he barely knew.
ReplyDeleteI wish I could end it here, but the snark, a self-defense mechanism kicks in in the State of the Union created by the machine that allowed Loughner to brew:
These are the kinds of real Americans we could only hope to be chock full of. And he represents exactly what the Ugly Alaskans and Ugly American's like the Tea Party and Sarah Palin's of this country would have had his papers checked. And to see if he is Christian. And to see if he is straight. And to see if he practices abstinence. And to see if he is pro-life. And to see if he lives beyond his means. And. . .you get it.
Gentle Giant, that's nice. It's amazing that he's so young yet so stable.
ReplyDeleteWhat an honor for that heroic young man. Weren't we just talking yesterday about young people who "accomplished more in their first twenty years than other people do in a lifetime"? Gee, let's see. This young man is getting an education, working in a public service job, and saved a life a couple of weeks ago. And that's just what we know he's done off the tops of our heads. How much you wanna bet that his parents and teachers and friends could tell us much more that he has accomplished?
ReplyDeleteMr. Hernandez is a beautiful soul. We could all learn a lot from his shining example.
ReplyDeleteNow Daniel Hernandez Jr. is someone who deserves a twenty-first birthday card, sent to Rep. Giffords' Tucson office, with a little folding green inside.
ReplyDeleteI'm game, anyone else?
THAT is 20?? Twenty??
ReplyDeleteApart from being a true hero, I also was impressed with his speech just before Pres Obama's at the memorial service.
ReplyDeleteI am in awe of this fine young man.
Seldom do we have a chance to see a young man or woman with such poise. When he spoke at the memorial, it was hard to believe he was only 20. His parents must be very proud, as any parent would be to have such a son. I hope we have an opportunity to see more of him in the future.
ReplyDeleteI got the same feeling seeing him speak at the memorial that I had watching Obama during the 2004 Dem convention. We may be looking at the first Hispanic American president.
ReplyDeleteHow many of us would run TOWARDS the scene of gunfire to save a person we had only recently met? I don't know if I would.
ReplyDeleteThis is an honorable, brave, humble young man who has an incredibly bright future. He is the kind of person that our children should try to emulate instead of some television or music star. I wish him the very best and I am thrilled to see him honored as a guest at the State of the Union.
I'm not prone to gambling nor cynicisim but I will be willing to bet that someone on the right, Beck, Hannity, Limbaugh take your pick will make some snide, snarky comment about this young man sitting next to the 1st lady. It will be of the nature of his ethnitisity or political affilation or as someone said, his imigration status.
ReplyDeleteThe word hero has been so overused in our society that it is in danger of losing its' meaning .........
ReplyDeleteThen you meet a real one and wonder how many will still condemn him because he is gay and hispanic.
Just wait till Fox and Friends trashes this nice story (douche bags).
ReplyDeleteHey what about Alaska's heroes?
ReplyDeleteWe have Track Palin who saved many kids by repairing the school bus brakes before they got hurt. He is a true Alaskan State Hero.
What Willow Palin? Willow took it upon herself to distribute narcotics to the people without health care. She sacrificed herself at nights and could be seen in dark parking lots filling the needs and comforting the underage children of Alaska.
Don't forget our dainty world class dancer Bristol Palin. She took it upon herself to sexually satisfy the many youth of our state. These boys could of ended up raping other young girls, but our hero prevented this hateful crime by sacrificing her own body fulfilling the needs of our boys.
Oh, we mentioned earlier about Willow's great deeds, but failed to mention her other contribution to our community. Willow took it upon herself by housing the homeless youth of Alaska. Willow would find empty homes and redecorate them for the grateful homeless kids. I would feel bad if I forgot to mention Willow is our little fighter for Gay Rights as well, she has spread the word and educated Alaska on the rights of our Gay brothers and sisters which we owe her a great deal of thanks.
Then there is our Piper Palin who sacrificed her own education by missing months and years of school by educating our great nation with the books filled with knowledge written solely by Sarah Palin. Piper spent many hours giving away Sarah's free books to the many people standing in line.
Then there stands Todd, a hero to the women of Alaska, their one strong beacon of light, our Alaskan Statue of Liberty and Freedom. Todd took it upon himself and even risked sacrificing his own marriage and family life to find work and to exercise the many women of Alaska.
Oh and I must not forget our Sarah. She took it upon herself to single handedly comfort our elderly Alaskan women by making them feel great about themselves by building up their self esteem. Sarah also took it upon herself to feed our many Native Alaskans with her famous home baked goods. I need to mention that it was Sarah herself that steered the Wasilla economy out of our great depression by letting our elderly and young women donate their money to our community by allowing them to purchase their own rape kits for themselves. Don't forget our realty boom, Sarah Palin single handedly insured that our property owners received 10 times top dollar for their land which they freely gave away land for our public use such as our world famous hockey rink which was built close to her house.
We thank our heroes of Alaska for their Christian family values they share with all of Alaska, the Palins.
Daniel Hernandez Jr. is a doer. He serves on the Tucson Commission for LBGT issues; yes, this guy is openly gay. He worked as an intern on Giffords 2008 campaign. Did not work on the 2010 because he was managing a state district campaign. He is a certified nursing assistant. On the day of the shooting, he checked three people's breathing/pulse before going to Gifford. While helping her, he gave advice to others who were helping others. Somewhere I heard he is Hispanic and Native American which is quite possible in that area where at least one tribe's reservation spans the border.
ReplyDeleteCompare this 20 year old to a 20 year old Bristol Palin.
ReplyDeleteYikes.
He deserves every accolade. I hope we see him in public life.

WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? What do you mean seldom do we have a chance to see a young man or woman with such poise. Aren't you proud of the Palin children? Bristol Palin is 20 years old and she is spreading her 20 years of Palin knowledge with the rest of America. This Christian family value the Palins have bestowed on their kids has been paid back 1000 folds to our community. We are just waiting for Piper to take her place on the Palin thrown and give back to the community like her older siblings are doing.

Yikes.

Are you saying the young man can't hold a candle to Bristol? Give Mr. Hernandez a few more years and maybe he can be able to give lectures and moral speeches just like Bristol. All it takes is for Mr. Hernandez to have a baby with only a high school education and he too can reap the riches by spreading worldly advice like the Palin children.
Heard him interviewed on NPR shortly after the shootings. Very impressive young man.
ReplyDeleteGryphen: thanks for some uplifting non-"screeetchy wretch" stories. It's good to be reminded that the world isnt all mean-spirited, greedy, vastly incompetent empty skirts.
