Audience member at Teabagger town hall asks "Who's going to shoot Obama?"

From Salon:

Here's the latest evidence that nothing has changed in post-Tucson America: A person at a Tuesday town hall with Rep. Paul Broun, R-Ga., got up and asked, "Who is going to shoot President Obama?"

The exact wording of the question is not clear because, the Athens Banner-Herald reports, there was a lot of noise at the event.  (The exact wording has now been confirmed by Broun's press secretary, and my headline is indeed accurate.) Perhaps more significant than the question was the response of the crowd and Broun, who is a member of the Tea Party Caucus and one of the most right-wing members of Congress.

The question prompted a "big laugh" from the crowd, in Oglethorpe County, Ga., according to the Banner-Herald. Broun, for his part, did not object to the question. He said in response:

"The thing is, I know there’s a lot of frustration with this president. We're going to have an election next year. Hopefully, we'll elect somebody that’s going to be a conservative, limited-government president that will take a smaller, who will sign a bill to repeal and replace Obamacare."

The proper response to this question should have been to tell the person who posed it that such talk was against the law and then reported his ass to the Secret Service.  However this Teabagging tool decided to pander to the most hate filled members of his party by essentially expressing his solidarity with the sentiment.

In my opinion if, God forbid, anything DID happen to our President these public servants should be charged with promoting sedition and fanning the flames of violent rhetoric against the leader of this country.

The individuals using this kind of language are certainly old enough to remember what happened in the 1960's when words were followed by actions and we lost our President, his brother, and our most famous icon in this nation's battle for equal rights.

Can you imagine if that came from a minority or the left asking that same question? jail time.

I can not believe that these lunatics sent the college boy who hacked Palin's computer to Jail. Palin is a cold heart.
    But;
    This makes me smile..

"Her major weakness is that she needs to bone up on how the government works," said Don Long, a retiree from Lake Wylie, S.C. "I don't know if she's done as much of that as she needs to."

Long was one of about 150 Republicans who showed up for a fundraising dinner of the York County Republican Party, where they ate barbecued pork sandwiches from Bats BBQ — "You'll love the way we rub your butt" — and talked presidential politics."

Yet the White House still, after 2 years of violence directed at this admin, hasn't specifically addressed the issue. Why? No one person is responsible. However, if the current Pres were a decent and honorable leader, he would have addressed it via a presser designated specifically for violent rhetoric.

Let's face it. This behavior has always existed. In fact, today's world isn't any more dangerous than in the past, when people were MORE gun happy.

Face it guys. Obama is a huge failure as a world leader. There's no evidence in his life that makes him a stronger candidate for any job other than intern, which is the only post college job, non-govt he's held

You know, this is where we have to go back to McCain and his grappling with crazies dominating his party in 2008. It must have been like dancing on a razor.

At one of the Town Hall meetings he favored, a spiteful old crone said she didn't trust Obama because he was "Muslim," McCain didn't gain any brownie points with the psycho's that were going to vote for Sarah (I mean, McCain) no matter what - but he did make the rest of America appreciate his response in defending his competitor.

As for this Congressman Douchebag and the constituency that applauded such a nasty statement, shame shame shame.

You are in the WRONG country, you must be mistaking yourselves for Egyptians, Tunisians or Bahrain or Iraqi citizens, not free Americans. Show me, in your household, how a Two Year Old Obama Administration has adversely affected your life? Curbed your freedoms, threatened your lifestyle?

When I say go to hell, it is just an expression - I'm not asking when someone can shoot you in the head. That's the difference between a rational American and whatever the hell you are.

Giving the guy his due, he *has* issued a press statement, saying he was stunned by the question and tried to move one.

here's what it said according to Huffinton Post:

"Tuesday night at a town hall meeting in Oglethorpe County, Georgia an elderly man asked the abhorrent question, "Who's going to shoot Obama?" I was stunned by the question and chose not to dignify it with a response; therefore, at that moment I moved on to the next person with a question. After the event, my office took action with the appropriate authorities. I deeply regret that this incident happened at all. Furthermore, I condemn all statements--made in sincerity or jest--that threaten or suggest the use of violence against the President of the United States or any other public official. Such rhetoric cannot and will not be tolerated."

Honestly? I don't know what my reaction would be, most of that garbage just knocks all speech out of my head altogether, anyway.

  9. Something has got to be done about these tools both the Republicans in Congress and their constituents.

Soon after President Obama took office the Secret Service reported that threats against him were up 400% over what it was with baby Bush. I wouldn't be surprised if it's even higher now due to the incessant vitriol and anger being ginned up by Fox Noise and the Republican politicians that seem to have absolutely no goal other than to oppose any and everything the President stands for.

You'd think after a congress woman was nearly killed and 6 other people WERE killed in Arizona they'd tone it down, but apparently they don't give a damn.

This is why Jon Stewart has angered many on the left. He keeps saying the left and the right are the same, that the left has just as many angry crazies.

Well, no that's just not the case. We have some angry people on the left now because the Republicans are trying to bust unions and basically trying to kill the middle and poor class while giving more and more to the richest people.

That's plenty to get angry about and it's about time we stand up against that like the protestors in Wisconsin.

This is outrageous. There should have been a follow-up and an arrest. That was a borderline express threat against the President, and the fact that Rep. Brown did absolutely nothing to discourage it or order an investigation means he is responsible for encouraging this kind of reckless, hateful rhetoric.

This is what Sarah Palin started in 2008, and it is a despicable, shameful legacy. Sarah has a lot to answer for because of her disregard for the law and for consequences of irresponsible speech.

I hope that decent Americans get out and vote for President Obama next year if he decides to run. I know I will be actively supporting him and actively working against these kinds of bozos.

Why would the president address these threats publicly. Reagan and Ford never held press conferences every time they received death threats, and as I recall, the Gipper was actually shot and Ford survived two assassination attempts. It's the Secret Service's job to investigate these threats, which they do.

What a ludicrous argument. Let's blame the president for bringing threats of assassination on himself. I must say I love how the black president gets under the skin of teabaggers and other fearful people who see their time in the majority coming to an end.

First of all, that sort of language is illegal, and it would not surprise me if that person is being investigated. The Rep should have called him out on it right then and there. The fact he didn't speaks volumes.

Second of all, the poster upthread who has the audacity to say violent rhetoric and racism is President Obama's fault because he hasn't held a press conference about it - screw you. And that's using the polite form...there really aren't words strong enough to express the appropriate condemnation for those disgusting remarks. Additionally, four presidents have already died by the hand of assassins and Broun is too much of a demagogic chickenshit to call out this goober as the unpatriotic domestic terrorist that he is?

This is just another piece of conclusive evidence that the GOP is top heavy with unpatriotic racist thugs who willingly give aid and comfort to domestic terrorists if it suits their political ends to win at all costs.

You're nearly as big an asshole as Paul Broun. Some ignorant cousin fuck with more toes than teeth threatens the president by musing who will shoot him and your nimble brain concludes that it is President Obama's fault? You are a feckless moron. Whether or not Obama is doing a good job is irrelevant to this discussion.

There is NO circumstance under which it should be ever acceptable to speak of the assassination of any president, irrespective of party or political affiliation. To openly speak of such an act is not only illegal, but it should also be viewed as anathema to our democracy. The minimum that we should expect from ANY employee of the federal government is that they would not witness such criminally seditious speech without at least reporting it to the appropriate authorities. Given that no less than four of our presidents have died by the hand of assassins, this is the least that we should expect from Rep. Broun. And yet, upon witnessing such a threat, he did nothing.

You are the kind of dickhead that has helped create our current climate where lies, bullying, innuendo, and threats of violence are frequently employed to silence your opponents. I think the Koch brothers bear some responsibility in this. Their front groups hyped up the outrage against health care reform via paid thugs and misled low-information voters. They encouraged screaming, vitriolic rhetoric.

The only, and I mean only sane moment by the right was when McCain had an uncharacteristic moment of decency and told the woman who was accusing President Obama of being a Muslim. McCain stood beside her and told her she was wrong. That should be the model for every instance of this kind of crazy.

In The Impact of Science on Society, Bertrand Russell wrote:

"There are certain things that our age needs, and certain things that it should avoid. It needs compassion and a wish that mankind should be happy; it needs the desire for knowledge and the determination to eschew pleasant myths; it needs, above all, courageous hope and the impulse to creativeness.

"Science, Russell argued, could help determine what is needed for happiness and what should be avoided. Religion, especially Christianity, should be shunned for the great harm it has done humankind and because it “encourages stupidity.”

Now, I am no longer a Christian, but I do not believe that all Christian denominations encourage stupidity, but obviously and undeniably some do just as certain factions of other religions encourage blind, unthinking devotion so the follower can be manipulated.

Every religion is only as good as the leaders of followers are. If the leaders, to whom the followers look for guidance, are stupid, that segment of the religion will be thoughtless, cruel and violent.

Religion should bring forth the best in people, not the worst.

Political and societal leaders of every kind should also strive to bring forth the best in us, not speak to or allow the basest parts of human nature to predominate.

The fact that the loons have taken over the asylum is obvious in the way the teabaggers and their ilk have been embraced into the Grand old bigots party simply because a man of color occupies the White House. There was NEVER this much vitriolic anger against any other president until Obama was elected thanks in large part to morons like Palin sticking her naughty monkey heel into a hornet's nest of under the surface racism by putting an attractive face on bigoted attacks. And the President is to blame for this HOW exactly? The same can be applied to Mr. Broun's response or inappropriate lack of. But more is asked and required of Mr. Broun, making his error in judgement more egregious.
IMO Mr. Broun has demonstrated that he is both a coward and a substandard representative.

Additionally, I am writing my Senators, House Leader Boehner, and Minority Leader Pelosi. Ga. Law Could Give Death Penalty for Miscarriages

Georgia State Rep. Bobby Franklin—who last year proposed making rape and domestic violence "victims" into "accusers"—has introduced a 10-page bill that would criminalize miscarriages and make abortion in Georgia completely illegal.

Does anyone remember when folks were being arrested just for wearing anti-Bush t-shirts to rallys? Why can't the Secret Service step in and arrest this a**hole? I'm sure he can be identified from the crowd pictures. All of these haters just hate the President because of his race - they could put up with (and like - and want to "drink a beer with") idiots like Bush!

Shameful. I still remember the day JFK was shot. My parents were Republican, but I remember my mom crying.

Anon@9:01 What have you been smoking and/or what pills have you been taking? As a black person who lives in Ga with these fools, I can say without a doubt that much of the hatred directed toward President Obama is the result of the many lies that are told about him on a daily basis, such as the one you're pushing here about him being a failure. If this were true, the economy wouldn't be edging toward recovery, and none of the nations of the world would be willing to work with him on anything. The opposite is true, President Obama is more respected by people around the world than he is by some of his own citizens. No matter what he does, people like you will never think it's enough because you don't want him in the WH anyway. F**k you, and the rest of the haters who kissed GWB's ass as he led the nation and the world to a state of near total devastation.

If you were more tuned in to current events, you'd know that the eyes of the world were on Obama in 2008, and the world took a collective breath of relief when people discovered that McCain wouldn't be the next POTUS. FYI, none of the leaders of other nations really liked GWB. You should ask yourself why GWB and the former members of his administration cannot travel to certain countries. It's because they will be detained and tried for war crimes. It's why GWB canceled his recent trip to Switzerland. The authorities were waiting for him with an indictment they were ready and more than willing to serve on him.

President Obama may not do things they way you and others think he should, but he has killed or detained more terrorists in less than 3 years than GWB did during his 8 years in office. President Obama has deported more undocumented immigrants in less than 3 years than GWB did in 8 years. He is welcomed warmly in every country he has been to since he's been in office. He had assistance from our allies in dealing with the situation in Egypt, and he is getting them to help with the protests that are occurring throughout the ME. These things only spell failure to someone who is closed-minded and wouldn't accept anyone except a white male as POTUS. Furthermore, there have been no terrorist attacks on the U.S. thus far. You're entitled to your opinion, but you're not entitled to try passing off your opinions as facts.

  65. anyone looking for a deeper understanding of the habits of feeling and thought behind that person's question ~~ look for Eudora Welty's story "Where Is The Voice Coming From?", written after the assassination of Medgar Evers. (The New Yorker online has a podcast of Joyce Carol Oates reading the story, nicely done.)
Ever since the attempted bombing in Spokane on MLK Day I've been dreaming about the Sept 63 church bombing in Birmingham. Anyone with any memories about that time, I would appreciate hearing them. I'm guessing Gryphen can pass any private messages along?
I hope we all keep lighting candles to our deities to keep us all safe....and I hope we're all rallying somewhere tomorrow, to support Planned Parenthood, workers's rights...whatever....my sign says "Another Mother By Choice For Choice" on one side, and "Hey Boner: screw us and we multiply" on the other. Should I add "where are the jobs?"??

I love the fact President Obama doesn't respond to any of this crap...he has so much on his plate...I'll wager he isn't made aware of much of it! Plus, it' absolutely wonderful seeing his approval ratings in spite of the fact the Republicans are doing everything they can to dismantle his effots. He keeps plugging along - making quiet moves - being successful. God, I'm glad he is our President! Love Mrs. Obama and the well behaved girls too.

According to the bill you'd have to be able to prove you or no one else had anything to do with causing it.

Of course how in hell you'd prove that is up for debate IMO.

The Mother Jones article says the bill probably won't go through but it's just the idea that these guys are proposing such things.

It's like they're in some kind of contest to see who can come up with the most ridiculous anti-woman laws imaginable.

And as a woman I'm totally incensed and utterly outraged that they have the indecency to do so and are not the least bit embarrassed about it.

The beginning of the end of this country is when the Republicans released Palin with her red meat rancour speeches. The Republicans thought they could control the hate but now even they're running from the astro-turf Tea Partiers, the genie can't be put back in the bottle.

I used to joke about leaving the country but between this and the havoc being created by the Winger/Bagger Midwest Governors I'm rapidly thinking about doing it. I don't want to spend my last 20-30 years on this planet living with hate, anger, and seeing citizens turned in to homeless hungry mobs. Not to mention that I'm not immune at my age from being replaced by a younger version, one whose salary is less.

Reagan started the slide, Bush 1 continued it, Bush the Lesser just about killed the middle class, and the next Republican President will finish the job...if it takes that long. It was a short run at the top wasn't it Uncle Sam and we can ultimately thank the middle class whites for voting against their own interests....amazing, utterly amazing. They can blame the blacks, the hispanics, the gays, and anyone else but when they look in the mirror they can then see who killed the American Dream.

  69. The Secret Service did follow up. The Service concluded that the questioner, an elderly person, made a "bad joke." Just kidding??? Doesn't it make you all warm and fuzzy knowing these guys are protecting the President?

Yeah because elderly people never assassinate anyone. After all, the Holocaust Museum shooter was only 89.

My irony meter just went full "tilt".
