Gabrielle Giffords not aware of the details surrounding her injuries.

I have to wonder how she will process the information concerning the deaths that resulted from the attack and the news that somebody attempted to assassinate her?

  1. I work with people who have brain injuries and to my knowledge the victim never remembers the incident.

Thanks for the link to Shailey's blog - went on and read it. She sounds like a very interesting lady. Left a note for her - also many others have done the same. Only saw one real tacky comment to her.

  3. Glad to read that Gabriel Giffords is recovering. It may be best if she does remember any of it.

OT - There is some serious and interesting feeds across the top of Huffpo on RSMCCAIN - the other mccain about his possible flirting with other women. What goes around comes around!

From what I understand it takes about 7 seconds for a memory to "set", so a person with a severe brain injury could not remember anything after 7 secs before the injury occurred.

Thank you Gryphen, for posting this. Her progress is so encouraging and uplifting. It made me smile.

Unlike all the crap I read about the Grifting Palins.

I suppose ubtil she asks what happened to her/ why she's where she is, they will leave it alone. Imagine explaining to her she's wearing a helmet because half her skull has been removed.

Glad to hear she is still improving.

I've been blaming Palin all along w/her negative rhetoric and the gunsite map. Many I know also place the blame soley on sister Sarah. And, then think of her speech after Gabby had been shot. Absolutely amazing. Remember, everything is ALWAYS about Sarah.

Cannot begin to imagine how awful it will be for Gabby once she is made aware of what happened. Keep her in your prayers everyone.

  10. She will never remember the incident and will be able to process the information. She needs to use her energy to get better and needs to be able to ask questions over a period of time to come to terms with it. So, that is why they are waiting. It is like teaching a child about sex, you answer the questions honestly as they come up. The person asks the questions when they are ready for the information.

@Andy 3:22: I think many people who suffer a traumatic injury have similar experiences. In Gabby's case I believe the newscaster was wrong to push the "recovery envelope" asking if Gabby knew about the whole tragedy. It was a stupid, sensationalistic question.

She does not need to know the specifics of the event where she was injured just yet as she is in the very beginnings of her recovery. Hell, I wouldn't explain the totality of sadness unless or until she asked for it. Then she's probably ready for the full "crosshairs" of the facts and how to digest them and possibly respond. Until then:

    God Speed Gabriel!

  12. For what it's worth, my partner suffered a traumatic brain injury about 10 years ago while coaching a softball team. She was struck on the left side of her head with a ball, had a temporal lobe hemorrhage and was in and out of consciousness for several days. Afterward she suffered generalized seizures for several years and is now left with memory deficits and temporal lobe epilepsy. She remembers everything about the incident in detail. She's just very sketchy about the five years following it.

We won't know for a while how she'll process that information, and that's just fine with me. Anything that would set back her progress would be horrible.:-(

It is not surprising she has no memory of the event as her brain had no opportunity to move through the stages of short, medium and long term memory.

what is important to her recovery is how much of her stored knowledge and experiences she can remember and process.

I don't suppose Sarah has sent Giffords any kind of good will message.
Like, say, I can get God to open doors for me so I will pray he opens the "get well" door for you.

Probably every politician and public personality in the country has sent some kind of message to Giffords, even some of the hate mongers at Fox may have, and probably very Republican in Arizona.

Any body want to bet a C note that Self Absorbed Sarah has send good wishes or prayers or asked her bots to pray for Giffords' recovery?

As a retired EMT, I have to agree with Andy and others.
Victims of brain trauma almost NEVER remember the incident, and that is also very common in serious traffic accidents.
I think the human brain has the capacity to lose that immediate short-term memory from a trauma to be able to heal and move on, much as Celia described.
For Gabby, all I wish is the best recovery and outcome for her, her family, and everyone who loves and appreciates her vibrant personality.
