Is talk radio just about dead? Or is that just their audience?

From the Daily Beast:

"There are a lot of program directors whose radio ‘spider-sense’ is tingling,” says Randall Bloomquist, a long-time radio executive and president of Talk Frontier Media. “They're thinking ‘this conservative thing is kind of running its course. We're saying the same things from morning 'til night and yes, we've got a very loyal core audience—but if we ever want to grow, if we want to expand, we've got to be doing more than 18 hours a day of ‘Obama is a socialist.’”

A look at radio’s PPM ratings for the largest talk radio market in the nation bears this out. An apples-to-apples comparison of ratings between November ’09 and November ’10 in the New York area shows that Rush Limbaugh’s ratings on WABC declined from 5.4 to 5.0—despite the crescendo of a GOP election year landslide. Likewise, year-end to year-end comparisons of the crucial 24 to 55 demographic show that Rush declined from 3.7 to 2.6—while his packaged follow-up acts Sean Hannity and Mark Levin narrowly declined and flat-lined, respectively. And Hannity was dropped from his Philadelphia radio station along with Beck last month after being dropped from his syndicator in Salt Lake City (!) last year before finding a new home in the area.

“I will tell you that a very senior talk radio executive, somebody with responsibility for a large number of talk radio stations, expressed to me just this week his concern that talk radio as we know it could be largely gone in five years and the reason for that is, just plain and simple, the aging demographics of the format,” explains Bloomquist. “Depending on who you talk to, the median age for talk radio is somewhere between 52 and, and, and 63, and it's just going up… for the most part political talk, particularly ideological political talk of any stripe, appeals to old people.”

This matches exactly what my personal observations have been.

I personally NEVER listened to talk radio until Shannyn went on the air, and still only rarely tune in. I just find it an irritating noise after awhile, and virtually ANY ONE'S voice grates on my nerves past the half hour mark.

My daughter WILL NOT ride in the car with me while the station is tuned in to talk radio, and really demonstrates only a passing interest in cable news channels. (Except Rachel Maddow.  She loves Rachel!)  And by the way not one of her friends, not ONE of them, has ever even watched Fox News!

To hear my daughter tell it even Twitter leaves much of her generation cold, and only blogs, Facebook, and texting are able to hold their attention for any length of time.  (Oh, and by the way, the friends of hers I have met are almost exclusively progressive.  Suck on that Sarah Palin!)

Wouldn't it be awesome if the blowhards and trouble makers from talk radio suddenly found themselves essentially talking to themselves in the next five years while the up coming young voters simply turned away from their bombastic rhetoric in order to search for the truth on their own?

Well than it already IS awesome because that is exactly what they are doing.

Let me just say one more time how much hope I have for this new generation coming up behind us. From what I can tell from my vantage point, we did good baby boomers, we did good.

I love this posting Gryphen. I can remember my home town's radio station that made me nuts when I was a passenger in my parents car when I was a kid....50 years ago! But it was never as nasty as these current broadcasts are today. Good bye to them!

Of course, I hope no one is grouping all people over a certain age into one category.

I am sixty-one and I do not listen to talk radio, do not watch Fox News, and never will. Neither does my husband.

I am a staunch progressive, always have been and always will be. The same goes for my sixty-four year-old husband.

So many of our age group work hard for our community, do volunteer work and support progressive causes, and tirelessly email, phone, write for progressive causes and candidates and comment on progressive blogs.

We watched Keith every night. We still watch Rachel Maddow and occasionally watch Lawrence O'Donnell and Ed Schultz. We stay on top of current events and vote in every single election for progressive candidates and enlightened judges (yes, we even research the judicial candidates in our area up for election).

I am every excited about the prospects of Generation We, but I get a bit weary of people writing off older citizens simply because a small minority of dunces in the same age group can't get their heads of out their own asses or are too damn ignorant or fearful to vote for the good of our country and the next generations.

Seniors are not all alike. Please start making sure you distinguish between the ones of us who care and the ones of us who don't.

Thanks. Sorry to rant, but I refuse to be written off or grouped with the dunces.

The hip 30-somethings I follow (some are my kids) are on Twitter. A couple are on FB too, but it seems to require a bigger time and energy investment. Thier twets are upbeat, smart- and progressive.

What I like about Twitter (and I'm well into that talk radio demographic, btw) - is the ability to shoot our a quick tweet and then go on to something else.

  8. You know what would be totally, truly awesome: if musical variety returned to the radio airwaves in abundance. I miss hearing all sorts of music, even if on AM.
That said, I'm hoping this is the beginning of the end of this plague of talk radio: if it ain't conservative stuff, it's sports or religion or financial stuff. Bring back real music.

"President Obama Follows Governor Palin's National Security Advice"

    Posted on February 12, 2011 - 6:14 PM - by: Whitney Pitcher

. . . Well, what do we have here? Governor Palin tweets, and the next day, President Obama jumps. The Obama administration is thankfully heading Governor Palin’s advice for once. However, it cannot be forgotten that President Obama largely ignored the green movement protests during Iran’s presidential election in 2009 and has not taken a strong stance against the tyranny of President Ahmadinejad. This is not the first time that Governor Palin has called for respect for human rights and allowance of freedom in Iran. . .

I tune into Limbaugh every once in awhile just to see the crap that he is spewing and it is always the same! The angry voice...constant rude and lack-of-respect commentary about President Obama, our First Lady, uses horrid knicknames for them and other members of the Administration, etc.

Truthfully, I cannot imagine living in the heart and soul of Limbaugh, Beck or Palin for that matter. They are ugly people - very hateful - spread lies - and certainly are not christian acting in any way, shape or form. They also do not represent fellow Americans that I know and love.

I'm sure there is a place in hell waiting for all three of them.

I already burned out of HuffPost about three months ago. I was never a commentator, didn't care much to be a part of that sounding board - but it got stacked with conservatives trying to game the discourse. The announcement of AOL's purchase cements my disinterest in that forum anymore.

I think theres a fine line between progressive 20 somethings who are successful in their careers and traditionally minded 20 somethings that, while still openminded, dont want the status quo to change.

Theres a huge chunk of the country thats follows the latter creed.

I'm in my late 30s and I do know people (former middle and high school classmates) who listen to talk radio. But I grew up in a very politically conservative area, in a school where we were pretty much indoctrinated into the religious right way of thinking. The people who still follow that (and who, I kid you not, make Facebook comments about how they thank God for Rush Limbaugh's truth-telling) have not, for the most part, ever lived anywhere else. If they went to college, they usually went to a conservative evangelical or bible college. Basically, with a few notable exceptions, they've chosen as adults to remain in the same bubble in which we grew up.

In some ways I feel sorry for them. I also wish they would realize that the reason they're scared their beliefs wouldn't survive outside the bubble (which they quite likely wouldn't) has less to do with what's "out there" than with the inherent flaws in those beliefs.

If Rush ever does go off the air, my dad--who's one of those mid-60s white males who honestly believes that "white Christian males are the most discriminated-against group in America today"--will scream about the horrible left-wing media conspiracy. Which is an irony, given that it would actually just be a perfect example of his beloved capitalism at work.

  18. I hope you are correct in your analysis predicting the demise of right-wing talk radio.

But I seriously question your conclusion that our age cohort has served future generations well.

In the lifetime of our children, those who are young adults and all who follow, there will continue what is already being seen - extreme, dangerous, lethal weather as a result of climate change.

It's already evident in many record-breaking events, from floods to heat with droughts resulting in wildfires.

I read this blog because you relentlessly expose Sarah Palin - but I hope you include that the worst damage she represents is the denial of climate science, and our need to address the threats as a global community with, *gasp* limitations and regulations limiting the burning of fuel!

My grandmother was almost 80 when she died
    in 1993, and she'd been a life-long Dem, a Union
member, a huge fan of FDR & JFK, and for the
last few months of her life she'd started watching
RL's show. I don't think she had any idea what
he was saying, I think she saw this fat man and
he was bopping around, and she didn't listen
to what he was saying. She had heart disease,
so she wasn't getting a lot of circulation to
her brain those last few months, at least that
is what I like to tell myself. I think that is
what is wrong with a lot of the elderly
tea baggers--their brains are giving out on

Is talk radio just about dead?
    That's an interesting question.
The listeners that radio has can either be kept or lost. There are no new listeners for traditional over the air radio. Not dead- but it is about to shrink significantly.

A friend sent me some similar ratings a few months ago.

We are keeping a list of those hosts who are either bailing out or being fired by the stations.

Including the syndicated drops- it is a trend going one way. It seems to be widespread.

Most interesting are the hosts under 40 who are out the door and probably out of the radio industry. There are more than a few.

The executives are watching each other to see who will be first to really hit the flush lever. No one wants to be first, but everyone wants to be right behind in making the big move. That is how it always is with executives, a follow the leader type thing, but there is one other detail that is different. They aren't looking forward to the backlash from the listeners and the hosts. No one wants to be on Beck's whiteboard as a plotter.

The split in the Republican party will also drive 'moderate' listeners away from these shows. That is probably significant in the recent ratings declines. The hosts can moderate the content and lose the fanatics; or they can continue to drift to insanity and drive away half the Republican Party.

The ratings will force this flush to happen, and if the declines continue, it will be soon.

  26. There is a reason for this.

The REAL truth though no one says it is the CORE hard time listeners to fox news and hate talk radio are racists.
They all know it and not a single hater is popular unless the audience believes he/she is also racist.

The largest section of the racist population areexactly the age group that listens to these haters.
That's a fact that anyone can look up.
The young are not as racist as the seniors.
    Period.

And that's what explains these people who vote and act in ways that are actually damaging to their kids.
    Race trumps everything to them.

Have you all not wondered how the hell can these people really listen and support these people??
    Of course!.

And the reason is simple, they think they are "on their side".
You think it was an accident that ronald reagan announced his presidential candidacy in the most racist spot in the country?

The "genius" of fox news was becoming blatantly racist and knowing they could never be called on it because it would be like calling your own hoped for listeners, watchers....racist!

This is as I have always predicted. While the terrible right wing rhetoric has been the standard for the last two years, it is also a message that can't survive the demographics. The next generations will not tolerate the hate-filled gargbage. They are tolerant and accepting.

What amazes me is that the gullible buffoons who hang on every word of the Pedophile Porcine Prince or any of the other right wing bloviators is that none of them ever seem bright enough to put two and two together. They never seem to be bothered with the fact that none of the febrile predictions made by any of these right wing fear mongers EVER seem to come true. NONE of them! Is there no point at which they say, "Hey, wait a minute. What about when Rush said..."

I used to share an office with one of these morons and during the 2004 presidential race he came in one day saying, "Kerry pulled a Clinton. He was involved in a sex scandal!" Dave had been listening to one of the right wing hacks.

On my 40 minute drive home I listened to NPR and there was not a mention of the scandal. I listened to both CBS and ABC national news - nada. I looked online for ANY mention and also came up with zilch. No news ever came of the scandal because whoever Dave was listening to made the whole damn thing up.

Dave never said anything else about the matter. In fact, he seemed to have forgotten it by the next morning.

    Dave was a dumb fuck.

So it goes for the other such cousin humpers who hang on every insane racist bullshit lie which emerges from Limbaugh's fetid piehole. These ignorant old farts aren't going to change so the sooner they shake off this mortal coil, the better off we'll all be.

Maybe we could encourage them to take up really dangerous hobbies. How about naked chum diving with great white sharks?

Just remember, at the Jon Stewart/Steven Colbert rally about one third of the participants were over 50. We are still the same hippie kids of the 60's. Very little in terms of cultural and world view differences has changed. Back then the South and Midwest supported the war, told us to either love America or leave it.

I wouldn't get our hopes up. I think the monsters will just repackage their hate as "libertarianism" and tweak their messages accordingly to reach the younger conservatives who do read Reason Magazine, support Ron Paul, etc. Let's not forget, as honorable as Ron Paul's opposition to war is, he still wants to take an ax to social programs for the public interest. And at heart, that is the ultra rightwing's driving goal to: to turn most of this country into serfs.

The same thing happened to Christian telecast. They maxed their market out and that's why a couple of the biggies went bankrupt. And the novelty has worn off, and the donors used up.

One of the few things that Obama is talking about economy wise in the last few months that I agree with is getting broadband high-speed to the entire population.

I spent three years in rural NE Maine, no TV unless you have a ton of money to put in dish and pay the monthly fees,
AOL dial up that was all long distance, even more expensive than dish, there was another DSL that was very inexpensive but only ran at about 20Kh, then a group came along that broadcast FM from towers that was broadband but not highspeed so a lot of pages and video wouldn't load.

None the less that last one was it was a god send and at a decent price.

There was a tiny weekly paper and a couple of pathetic country western stations on the car radio.

In other words it was very difficult and frustrating to try to get even local much less state wide or national news. I am sure there are many such places in Alaska as well.

All the major networks have been Republican parrots since Nixon. Life, Look, Time, Newsweek, US News are the same.

Time will tell if people have a choice of what news to consume, like we do on highspeed broadband internet, what will happen to the most conservative areas of the country, which are largely rural.

  39. Well, it could be that their audience is slowly dying off due to natural old age and they're just not picking up any new listeners because no one wants to listen to poison. They old geezers may be hate filled and gullible, but not the youth market. Do you know any 20 somethings that listen to Rush? Voluntarily? When they're not riding in the car with Grandpa?

  40. There is a reason people under 30 rely on The John Stewart show to get the correct spin on the news. Think about it. Think truth when he goes after Obama or Fox News. He speaks the truth and it is funny. It is something we all think but can't quite put our finger on. I challange anyone of you to rent the 1978 move "Network" and not see the comparison to Glen Beck and Fox News in general. Liberal radio isn't any better. WE NEED HONESTY. There is none. Not ABC CBS FOX NBC or anywhere on the radio. There hasn't been one leader in my life time I would share a fox hole with. This says volumes about our nation.
