Dave Weigel calls the Mat-Su Hospital. Does this really answer anything? Update!

Dave Weigel, who famously went WAY out of his way to discredit Andrew Sullivan on his own blog, decided to call the Mat-Su hospital and ask if Trig Palin was born there:

The clerk, realizing that Washington, D.C. reporters don't typically cold call her hospital, asked me if this call was about "our former governor." It was. Was Trig Palin born there?

"Oh, that's not even a question," she said. (If my reception was better I could have heard her eyes rolling at this point.) "Yes. Everybody here remembers that. Yes, this is where the Palins come -- this is their family hospital."

Well that is more than most journalists have been able to get out of the Mat-Su Hospital, who usually has taken the "We don't discuss our patients with the media" approach to these questions.  If indeed they are willing to go on the record now, that is a good thing.

But having said that who accepts "Yes. Everybody here remembers that. Yes, this is where the Palins come -- this is their family hospital." as an answer to the question that Weigel posed?  Was there somebody in the building who was there the day that the Governor gave birth? Why didn't Weigel wait to write his story after he talked to somebody with more information than this clerk? Or did he try, and nobody else would respond?

And while we are on the subject how does Weigel, or anybody, explain why CBJ, who was once a very approachable fixture in Wasilla, is now essentially channeling Greta Garbo? Here is what Phil Munger, the only Alaskan blogger who knows Johnston, recently wrote about this bizarre situation:

CBJ, as she was often called locally, was a very public fixture around Wasilla up to the time of Trig's birth. Our daughter attended ballet with one of CBJ's kids for years, and I often saw CBJ somewhere or another around Wasilla or Anchorage at least once a week for well over a decade. Between the time of Trig's birth - early 2008 - and the issuance of the election eve letter purported to be from her, CBJ was far less evident. Since the letter was issued, CBJ has been unavailable to comment on it or on any other matter related to Trig and Sarah Palin.

(And Phil if you read this feel free to chime in.)

I have developed very little confidence in Weigel's journalistic abilities ever since he misquoted Shannyn Moore, and used that as the basis for attacking Sullivan on the babygate issue. (BTW neither Moore, nor Weigel, has ever publicly corrected that story, which still burns my ass.)

This article also makes mention of strange policy decision which took place at Mat-Su Hospital:

One of the original concerns Sullivan had with the Trig Palin story -- one that's based on an absent fact, and not on innuendo -- was that Mat-Su Regional did not list Trig Palin's birth on its website. There's a portion of the web site, the baby nursery, where newborns are listed. Trig, born on April 18, 2008, is not there. And that's somewhat curious. So: Is every baby born at the hospital listed on the web site?

"No, it's not automatic," said the clerk. "Truth be told, we do take security photos of all the babies, but if the parents want their babies listed on the web site, they can request it. We're really sensitive about it, though. I think the hospital took up the policy not to publish names automatically because of possible baby kidnapping issues."

I would like to point out that Mat-Su made this decision AFTER the birth of Tripp Johnston, and that it remains the ONLY hospital in Alaska to make this strange, and unnecessary, choice. Oh and by the way, there has NEVER been a baby kidnapped from the Mat-Su Hospital.

The fact that something stinks in Wasilla about this birth, should be a scent that even a pathetic excuse for a journalist like Dave Weigel should have the ability to sniff out.

Update: Phil Munger is clearly no fan of Dave Weigel either. Make sure to read what Phil says about the Mat-Su Regional Medical Center and how unlikely that it was the Palin "family hospital."

(BTW, and completely off topic, for those who are having trouble leaving comments, I do know about it and have contacted Google.  Other bloggers are having similar difficulties and have complained, so I hope it will be rectified soon.  Until then your best bet is to use a Google account. Apparently THOSE are getting through just fine.  Thank you for your patience.)

  1. Not too swift, Weigel! He had 2008, 2009, and 2010, during which he could have posed that question, but the frantic ass-covering starts... NOW!

  2. The fact that they're even bothering to publicly "investigate" this now says something to me.

I think the media is curious, but doesn't want to seem crazy, so they keep investigating under the guise of debunking.

I seriously doubt that they believe what's being said by the Palin camp and supporters at face value, but they're not willing to risk their reputations on it.

  4. The reception lady didn't answer Dave Weigel's question. He should have asked a follow-up.

And no, Dave, Trig's birth has not been proved by contemporaneous evidence - have YOU seen his birth certificate? Because no-one else has.

The false equivalence with the Obama-birther issue is nauseating.

This also confirms that Sarah lied about Trig being born in Anchorage at that pro-life speech.

  6. AND
Sarah has recently said in a speech that Trig was born in the Anchorage hospital

    AND
Matsu hospital is not licensed nor insured nor equipped for high-risk births, which Trig's surely was for several reasons.

I call BULLSHIT on Weigel. I don't know anything about the man, but I now believe that he is a sorry excuse for a "journalist." He seems to be of the same quality "journalist" as Sarah Palin.

At least not since the wee hours of April 18, 2008.

  8. Good points on Palin saying Trig was born in Anchorage and that Mat-Su doesn't have the proper license to deliver a special needs baby like Trig.

Did the reception lady at Mat-Su just land them in a lawsuit? I mean - Dave Weigel, MSM reporter seems to have taken her response as an admission that Trig was indeed born there.

  9. Put the flat-profile photo of SP 5 weeks before giving "birth" on one side. Put these quotes from the hospital on the other side. Which is a bedrock fact, and which is hospital staff remembering an easy-to-arrange charade for their benefit?

  10. More CYA. Did Weigel ask, "Were you there that night?"

Dave, call the guy who saw her in the Seattle airport and had no idea she was in labor. Call the massage therapist who felt her early third trimester belly. Call the reporters who saw Trig at the hospital or the office and ask if he moved or made any sound to show that he wasn't a reborn doll. Call Kim Chapman of the US military and ask why she is certain that Palin wasn't pregnant when she saw her in March 2008. Heck, even hunt down O'Malley's buddy who witnessed the treadmill belly. She or he was certain enough to launch Make.It. Stop.

Just remember that a woman with a flat belly can make herself look pregnant but not vice versa.

  13. Anyone who has heard the account of Trig's birth would tell you he was born at Mat-Su. That's what everyone has been told, including the people who work there.

We have long maintained that the handing over of Trig to Sarah was done under during the night shift and privately. I'd like Sarah to allow the delivery nurses, the ones who actually witnessed Trig emerging from Sarah's body, to come forward and say so. For that matter, I'd like CBJ to say the same thing, no mush-mouthed, he is her child, he was delivered at Mat-Su. I want someone to officially go on record (other than Sarah, herself) that they actually saw Sarah Palin give birth on April 18th to the child we know as Trig (and I'm not talking about Chuck or Todd or any of the Palin kids).

Until then, I'll assume people are just reporting what they've been told is true.

  17. One thing for sure, I would never in my life go to Mat-Su for any medical treatment. First, they (allegedly) allowed Sarah Palin to give birth to her preterm, special needs child, even inducing labor, when they are not equipped for that kind of situation and should have shipped her off to a larger, nearby facility. Second, they give out private medical information over the phone to any joker who calls.

What is wrong with these journalists? Don't they understand that there is a HUGE paper trail that documents a woman's pregnancy and delivery?

  31. Yes, add this spectacular example of investigative journalism to the other stellar Pulitzer-worthy pieces that finally got to the bottom of this Trig Tale.

Julia O'Malley: Knew someone that talked to someone that saw Sarah Palin pregnant on treadmill. YEP, SOME JOURNALISM 101 STUFF FOR SURE!

Wesley Loy: Had a, previously-unmentioned-in-any-of-his-prior-stories investigating "Grandma Palin", private "tete a tete" with the Governor whereby she raised her outer garment allowing a view of her distended (read, pregnant), cloth covered abdomen. We can sure understand why Mr. Loy might not have used this in his previous quest for the truth of Trig's origin. NOT!

Dave Weigel: Talked to an anonymous receptionist at Mat-Su Regional that confirmed that the Palins do all their doctorin' right there, thus confirming that Trig was indeed born at the Mat-Su Regional. (Birthing a baby counts as a kind of doctorin', right?) EXCEPTIONAL JOURNALISM, you sir must have found your inspiration in the previous two "circumstantial" tales that were recently printed!

So thanks all you hard working "journalists" for using vague, third-party accounts or round cloth covered bellies viewed in private, to finally break this story. If only any of the bloggers would have been privy to any of this "information" sooner then we'd have had our answer back in 2008. Guess these "sources" were just saving all the "good stuff" for the "real journalists". Hats off to you impartial, hard-working journalist boys and girls, hats off to you!

  33. Well that should put the birther issue to rest!

  35. The Trig birther issue is different. Isn't it? 9:43 AM

Yes, Sig, it is. President Obama has provided legal documentation, twice. Sarah has provided ... no, wait, uh, nothing? So until she does, yes, the Trig issue IS different.

P.S., I am not and never have been a Trig Truther. I have yet to see any solid evidence that proves she did not give birth to Trig. However, I have also not seen any reliable evidence that proves that she did. Until I do and given all the oddities of Sarah's various stories, I remain ... curious.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Calling the hospital and talking to whoever answers the phone proves NOTHING except that Weigel is a shitty journalist.

Is it possible that camp Sarah has gotten to some journalists in order to debunk the Trig issue before it comes out in one of the books that have been written about her??

    ReplyDelete
  37. Jim in Texas,

I remain curious about Obama's place of birth too. Until I hear that the so-called birth certificate has been analzed with modern day forensic techiniques I'll continue to not be sure he is an American citizen.

Now Trig on the other hand, I was there and saw him born. Does that help you out Jim? If not then phone the hospital and they will tell you that Trig is Sarah's child.

  41. I know this is a little off topic but did anyone see that Indiana & FL are following three other states on making abortions harder? You can read the whole article on HuffPo (I know I am NOT thrilled with them at all).

Florida wants to make ALL pregnant women get an ultrasound before an abortion. They would have to sign a paper saying they didn't want to see the ultrasound but still have the ultrasound.

Not only that but the woman would have to PAY for the ultrasound. What in the hell is going on? Who voted for all these morons?

  42. Now -- in the shadow of the Birthers' reaction to Pres. Obama's birth certificate -- is a good time to seriously reflect on what evidence would definitively settle the questions about Sarah Palin's alleged pregnancy (at least for all but the conspiracy theorists among us, if any).

Will her medical records be enough or, after all this time, do we need DNA?

Personally, I have trouble with the March 26 photo compared to the one taken on April 13. I'd really like for a respected, objective OB/GYN to provide a medical explanation for the change that occurred in those 18 days.

  43. If that "clerk" at the hospital really did say that "everyone" remembers when Trig was born, and that the Palins "always" go to the hospital for their health care, the clerk made a serious HIPAA violation. Health care facilities cannot release information, without permission of the patients. However, it's NOT a violation for Weigel to repeat it, because HIPAA only restricts providers.

I can't imagine a clerk saying what Weigel quotes the clerk saying, though.....I mean, can you imagine some switchboard person at the hospital saying "Who? John Smith? Oh yeah--everyone here knows him. Mr. Smith's been coming here for his VD treatments and heroin detox for years!"

re Gryph's wish for me to "chime in on CBJ:

The last time I saw her was on August 29th, at the state fair, about 30 minutes before my run-in with Joe Miller. Cathy and I said "Hi," and that was it. I hadn't seen her in a long time, but I was answering questions at the Democrats' booth as she walked by.

People ask me at blogs like IM or Palingates of Politicalgates, "Why don't you confront her? My answer has been and remains, "Have you ever gone up to a longtime friend who is also a doctor, and asked that friend to disclose personal medical information about one of the Doctor's patients, so you could print it on the web?"

If you have, let me know how you dealt with it, and it might influence how I might approach CBJ. Otherwise, it is her own decision to make, not mine.

  47. The clerk may not have violated any HIPAA laws.

"Q9: Are hospitals able to inform family members, visitors, and the clergy about individuals in the hospital?

A: Yes, the HIPAA Privacy Rule allows hospitals to tell family members, visitors, and the clergy about an individual's presence in the hospital, under the following conditions:

    1. The patient has been informed of this possible disclosure, and has not "opted out" of the hospital's directory.
    2. The family member or visitor asks for the person by name, and
    3. In the case of clergy, the individual has not objected to such a disclosure."

    http://privacy.health.ufl.edu/faq/faq.shtml#Clergy

Did Sarah opt out? She may have. I believe KTUU documented that the hospital refused to confirm that she was a patient at the time. Unfortunately, my links aren't working and I don't have time to search their archives.

Even if the hospital administrator confirmed the birth in writing, I wouldn't buy it at this point. It's a known fact that Sarah has influence with the hospital board.

It's a known fact that Sarah can pull strings. The story of the Anchorage PD cover-up for Todd comes to mind.

Gryphen - If things ever slow down and you have the time, it would be very helpful to have a summary post on the Todd-Shailey scandal and APD cover-up.

  50. Wow, Weigel, you sure got suckered. Now if you'd asked, did Sarah Palin's high risk, pre-term infant get birthed in your hospital that doesn't even have a NICU with the help of a doctor that only delivers a couple of babies a year?

Probably, Weigel, your source(!) would have giggled and say "golly, yes, and she can field dress a moose too".

    Now, THAT, would be journalism.

    ReplyDelete
  51. "Now Trig on the other hand, I was there and saw him born. Does that help you out Jim? If not then phone the hospital and they will tell you that Trig is Sarah's child."

Well then, Sig, since you observed the birth - which would make you medical personnel at Mat-Su or a Palin - you won't have any problem answering all of the questions that have been asked.

A prose narrative, minute by minute (to the best of your memory, of course) of all the events beginning with her arrival should do it. You will be serving a real need since Sarah refuses to offer any DOCUMENTATION (such as a birth certificate for "analysis").

If you can't do this, then you are obviously a totally ridiculous Palin panty-sniffer with no actual knowledge whatsoever.

P.S., With an official birth certificate, a la President Obama (OR MINE), the State or County Seal is what prevents the need for the US Passport Office or Medicare or etc. to have to perform a forensic analysis on each certificate.

    What an idiot.

  55. In ordinary, usual life, it isn't one thing that we require to allow us to believe someone; we want all the pieces of info to fit together to make a credible story.

--Usually, we like our source to be a trustworthy, honest person. SP is a well-documented frequent liar.

--We like data points to match. SP has given us two birth locations. She's said she told the family about the DS, but also told us that Willow was surprised by it upon first seeing Trig.

--Data matching again: the 6+ pound chubby Apr 19 baby does not match a usual 7.5-mo preemie.

--The flat-profile photo does not fit with giving birth 5 weeks later to a 6+ pound baby,

--The Gusty photo with a watermelon-sized belly does not fit with the way smaller photos before AND after -- but before supposedly giving birth.

--The wild ride is not confirmed by Alaska Airlines or any other witnesses.

    --Soooooo many other non-fitting pieces!

So when someone asks what kind of proof are we after, the answer is: we just want the basic facts to make sense relative to each other.

    But they never have.
