New Jersey teenager challenges Michele Bachmann to a debate.
Courtesy of New Jersey Newsroom:
Amy Myers, a sophomore at Cherry Hill High School East in Camden County, has challenged conservative Republican presidential hopeful Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann to a debate on civics and the U.S. Constitution.
Here is Myers’ letter:
Dear Representative Bachmann:
My name is Amy Myers. I am a Cherry Hill, New Jersey sophomore attending Cherry Hill High School East. As a typical high school student, I have found quite a few of your statements regarding The Constitution of the United States, the quality of public school education and general U.S. civics matters to be factually incorrect, inaccurately applied or grossly distorted. The frequency and scope of these comments prompted me to write this letter.
Though I am not in your home district, or even your home state, you are a United States Representative of some prominence who is subject to national media coverage. News outlets and websites across this country profile your causes and viewpoints on a regular basis. As one of a handful of women in Congress, you hold a distinct privilege and responsibility to better represent your gender nationally. The statements you make help to serve an injustice to not only the position of Congresswoman, but women everywhere. Though politically expedient, incorrect comments cast a shadow on your person and by unfortunate proxy, both your supporters and detractors alike often generalize this shadow to women as a whole.
Rep. Bachmann, the frequent inability you have shown to accurately and factually present even the most basic information about the United States led me to submit the follow challenge, pitting my public education against your advanced legal education:
I, Amy Myers, do hereby challenge Representative Michele Bachmann to a Public Forum Debate and/or Fact Test on The Constitution of the United States, United States History and United States Civics.
Hopefully, we will be able to meet for such an event, as it would prove to be enlightening.
Sincerely yours,
Amy Myers
What does it say about the quality of the Republican politicians when even teenagers in high school feel confident they can demolish them in a debate?
And what more does it say about those politicians after we come to the realization that they know it too, and that they will NOT accept this student's challenge?

I LOVE THIS GIRL!
ReplyDeleteAnd I love the commenter Kerry (I think Kerry) who posted the other day that you can get kindle for pc - thank you! I got Dunn's book and it's fabulous!

Amy's parents must be very proud of their articulate, highly intelligent daughter. Her teachers should also get some recognition for her education. I hope she will take into account that Bachman got her law degree at Liberty U, which is equivalent to ordering it in the mail from overseas. I would love to see this debate take place. More like a massacre than a debate. Like Palin versus Clinton.
ReplyDeleteWhat an articulate, courteously pointed and beautifully written letter by Miss Amy Myers.
ReplyDeleteShe is an encouraging reflection of the youth of this country.
Journalists and main stream media would do well to pay attention to Miss Myers, for they have abandoned their profession and have much to learn from Miss Myers in holding our politicians accountable for any deliberate misinformation that they, the politicians, so wantonly spew.
Thank you Miss Myers for picking up the ball that journalists and the main stream media have dropped. Shame on them.
What does it say if Bachman refuses?
ReplyDeleteEnter chicken noises...Buck...Buck...Buck
Old crazy eyes will do a tea bagger move and not even acknowledge the challenge. She is one with the dumb.
ReplyDeleteO/T But can these GOP women get better surgeons to do their faces? If Bachmann's skin gets pulled up any tighter her panty hose are going to be up to her neck and her eyes will be on her forehead.
My money's on the kid. LOL
ReplyDeleteLet's have a three way they can throw granny quitter in and Amy (my hero) will destroy them boy!
ReplyDeleteI am grinning from ear to ear. Amy Myers made my day.
ReplyDeleteDuring the ´08 campaigns, my lawn had a McCain sign (mine), a Hillary sign (my 15-year-old daughter´s), and an Obama sign (my 15-year-old son´s). After President Obama won the primary, I could never convince my daughter to support the McCain/Palin ticket. Sarah Palin, my daughter kept repeating (generously for my sake), appeared ¨overwhelmed¨ on the national stage. She gave the same answer as to why Sarah resigned as Governor the following year: ¨She´s just too overwhelmed.¨
I love this generation. America will be in good hands.
Why not throw Sarah Palin and Christine O'Donnell into the mix? Those three cackle of stupid would be shaking in their boots.
ReplyDeleteLet's hope this girl is thin and pretty, cause ya know, these mental giants can only come back at her with insults about her looks when she smacks them down with her brain.
ReplyDeleteWoo Hoo, East!!! That's my husband's alma mater. Michelle the bubble head would lose for sure.
ReplyDeleteNext up: my 2nd grader will challenge Sarah Palin to a debate on world geography. Sarah's response will be that someone as important as a 2nd grader would never take the time to debate a humble housewife from Wasilla.
I would SO pay to see this "debate". "Batshit crazy" against the HS Student. It would be awesome !
ReplyDeleteAll I can say is Palin and Bachmann are like twin sisters, one looks crazy and the other talks crazy.
ReplyDeleteBrava, Miss Amy Myers, for your well reasoned, beautifully written challenge to this opportunistic congresswoman.
ReplyDeleteBravo, Gryphen, for capturing that deer-in-the-headlights/what-on-Earth-happened look that suits her so well.

I think that the girl Amy would know more than Bachmann, bur would guess Bachmann would cheat.I'm sure since the Rep can't do anything without cheating or tilting the odds, someone would be giving her the answers in her ear.
ReplyDeleteYes, I too, noticed she's had work done on her face or eyes, compare with pictures several months ago her eyes are pulled up and back.
Amy Myers is my new favorite person.
ReplyDeleteCarrie
As a regular citizen, I offered to debate that idiot Sarah on policy, American history, her record, etc., in 2008. I left the request on several blogs. Sarah, YOU QUIVERING COWARD! She is so stupid. And of course, so is Bachmann...

ReplyDeleteA facebook page has been started to encourage the debate.
I would love to see this intelligent young woman debate Bachman. I hope this request goes viral.

ReplyDeleteBachmann actually got her law degree at Oral Roberts University Law School which closed the year she graduated. Just as bad as Liberty.
Bill
I just need to fix the chicken noises mentioned above. Anyone who had raised chickens knows it's
ReplyDeletebaaaaawwwwk, buck, buck, buck, buck
What does the position of someone like Michele Bachmann say about the people who elected her?
ReplyDeleteI am so proud of this young woman! Indeed, Ms Bachman should accept this invitation to debate.
ReplyDeleteNot to take anything away from Amy Myers, because she's obviously an intelligent, articulate young woman, but a kindergardener with a set of School House Rocks videos could demolish Michele Bachmann in a debate on US history & the Constitution.
ReplyDeleteDeer caught in the headlights picture!! That marvelous teenager has her in the crosshairs. OMG what can Bachmann do? If she meets the challenge, she looks like a fool. If she denies the challenge, she looks like a fool and a coward. Hahahaha!!! What a great chess move.
ReplyDeleteGod Bless Amy Myers, her parents and her teachers.
ReplyDeleteThe only logical conclusion the Republicans can draw from this letter is that Cherry Hill High School East's funding must be cut immediately!
This article would not have been written had it been a challenge from a conservative young man with the same challenge to the President. Most of you posting here would probably look ridiculous going against a high school student with just a little motivation in their classes. It is also easy to challenge when you have nothing to loose. No politician would benefit from a challenge like this. If they destroy the girl they look like a bully, if they lose they look like an idiot. See it for what it is, a Left Leaning Media ploy. I thought they were supposed to be look at both sides. You sheep want someone who is preaching to the choir.
ReplyDeleteOh hell, from what I have seen on the political discussions and interviews on TV I doubt that any of the repugs, those who have been elected and those who want to be prez could make a buck on "ARE YOU SMARTER THAN A 5th GRADER?"
ReplyDeleteLook, I'm no fan of Bachmann's (far, far from it) but she, or any politician would be stupid to debate, or even acknowledge the challenge from, any kid on any subject. It is simply a no-win for the politician.
ReplyDeleteBill @6.28 Thanks, I always get these "religious universities" mixed up. Neither is highly recommended, especially after W stocked the WH law dept. with so many of their graduates. I think $$$ is how these people obtain these degrees, not brains or studying.
ReplyDeleteSomeone should do the same thing to Palin - wish it had been done a long time ago and we wouldn't have had this three-year period of hell seeing her idiotic tweets, etc.
ReplyDeleteAs I've said time and time again, Palin would flunk a civics class test, one on American history, one on the various wars we've participated, probably cannot name all the states in the union along w/their respective capitols and a test on the oil industry throughout the world and most specifically in Alaska. Only then would her followers learn how incapable the woman is for ANY elected office.
At least Bachman has served in Congress and appears to have a work ethic (which Palin does not!)...probably smarter than Palin too.
Amy...You make New Jersey and our public school system (of course family, friends, and teachers) very proud!!! Way to Go!!!
ReplyDeleteBe sure to let us know the time and place as we IMers will be there to cheer you on.
Greetings From The Jersey Shore
My bet is MB will not acknowledge or accept this challenge.
ReplyDeleteThat said, if it should actually occur, I want to see it. In person, if possible.
You know that things are really bad when a 55-year-old House Representative gets challenged by a young gir nearly 40 years her junior. The girl is intelligent and articulate, just the kind of student that we need as the future of this country. She called out Bachmann for her ignorant, erroneous, and incendiary comments which should be a major embarrassment to any rational, thinking woman. Knowing Bachmann, she won't take the bait, which makes her look bad either way. Of course, no one can make either Bachmann or Palin look any worse than they already do.
ReplyDeleteMichele, not smarter than a tenth grader!!! :-)
ReplyDeleteHey Amy Myers, please don't stop there... invite Sarah Palin to your debate with Republican presidential hopeful Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann.
ReplyDeleteSarah is one sharp cookie, she went to 5 colleges... LOL, but you can take her with your public high school education.
Come on Sarah, show us that you have cajones... we'll even let you use your palms as a cheat sheet.
Amy Myers how about extending your invite to the whole retarded Palin clan?
ReplyDeleteLet's see what the Palin hoes and their criminal fake wanna-be-combat vet son knows.
OMG, you have to read Congressman Jack Kimble's response to Amy (who is offering to be Bachmann's ghost debater). It makes one wonder who the high school girl is.
ReplyDeletehttp://kimbleforcongress.blogspot.com/2011/05/congressman-kimbles-open-letter-to-amy.html
I've never seen such a lifeless expression on a person's face.
ReplyDeleteThat picture captures Bachmann perfectly.
This is a VERY bad trend for conservatives. Once they start losing debates with high school students they will start descending the educational food chain futiley seeking opponents they can crush intellectually:
ReplyDeleteBachmann:0 HS student:9
Trump:0 Middle schooler: 6
Palin:0 Microcephalus:0
Thus leading to the triumphant bagger headline:
PALIN SMART AS PINHEAD!
Well, it's a good thing Amy went public, otherwise we'd never hear about this, Bachmann dismissing it and going to change her wet panties. I can see her scared pee-less.
ReplyDeleteAny student who passed high school debate could wipe the floor with Bachmann.
I must commend Amy with a superior letter of intent. If her verbal skills in any way match her writing skills, Bachmann is toast.
Which is why it will never happen. Give them a day or two to make up some credible lie, er, excuse and that will be it.
Still, kudos to Amy! You go girl. As soon as possible, you start running. Locally to build up some cred. Then take on your local senate seat.
um...anon @ 11:10
ReplyDeleteThere is no Rep. Kimble. It's a fake. A joke.
It always cracks me up to read little rants by someone who has been bamboozled by the corporatists, and shows simpleton paranoia by speculating something as absurd as how this high school girl was part of a leftwing conspiracy to embarrass Bachmann.
ReplyDeleteI grew up in the 50's, and there were such boogeyman tales of how "communists" would gather in darkened places to plot against the American Way of life, even getting PAID by Russia! (My friends, once teenaged, kept looking for someone who had the bucks being passed around, so we could pretend to be such people, calling each other "comrade" and like that...but could never find anyone willing to pay us.)
Now, the OPPOSITE of this IS actually true: people like the Koch brothers really DO pay for people to pretend they are all "grass rootsy" and against the government. I KNOW some people who are laughing up their sleeves over this.
That this tactic has worked quite well to get the 70% of Americans who at one time, not long ago, demanded we reform the healthcare system--into now screaming that "Obamacare" is going to ruin their lives---is truly frightening.
BEFORE we stake our personal reputations on believing something, we need to really examine just who BENEFITS from it, if we do support the idea!
Anon at 11:10... one musn't wonder necessarily who Amy is but one must wonder who the spoofer is over at the link you posted... that Kimble site is a parody site...
ReplyDeletePretty funny in fact... had a good laugh
I wrote a long comment that disappeared; a shorter version. Friday night, I went to the Tacoma (WA) Dome to hear Bishop Desmond Tutu speak. I really didn't know what I was getting into, but it was a wonderful event. The entire evening was by, for, and about young adults. The theme was "Be the Spark". Words like peace, justice, diversity, hope, community were everywhere. This event was very bad news for the Dominionists and a source of great hope for me. Like Amy these young adults are ready, willing, and able to take up the mantle and tackle some of the great challenges. I believe them. Us older folk just need to get behind them and follow their lead.
ReplyDeleteAnon !!:10 Thanks for the URL. That guy is a real loser.
ReplyDeleteThere is no way...NO way on God's green earth that a sophomore from a public school, at that level of eduction wrote this 'letter'. If she didn't have help from her fascist, socialist supporting/instructing public school teacher, then rev. wright didn't say "Not God Bless American, but GD America!"...
ReplyDeleteSome background on Cherry Hill New Jersey from someone who used to live, work, and pay taxes there. The public schools there should be models for all public schools in the nation.
ReplyDeleteAmy is not the exception at Cherry Hill East. The teachers there are top notch people who deserve the title "Educators". They get the parents actively involved, take into account each student's learning style, and adjust their approach accordingly. This school challenges their student's minds, invites them to question their world views, and drives them to be the best they can be.
This is not to take away from Amy's amazing letter. She took the initiative on her own and deserves the respect and credit along with her parents.
It's a shame Bachman can't possibly match wits with her, I seriously doubt she could make the cut on Jeff Foxworthy's show.
Thanks, Gryphen, for including this story, the kids are allright!
@6:33
ReplyDeleteI miss having chickens.
