Once President Obama announced that Osama bin Laden had been killed by U.S. forces on Sunday, it didn't take long for fake photographs of the terrorist leader's corpse to start circulating. Websites and newspapers fell for them. And so did, apparently, U.S. senators.
Three senators who claimed to have seen a photograph of bin Laden's post-mortem are now backtracking, or flat out admitting that they were duped.
One of the senators is a key decision-maker on national security issues. Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-GA), the vice chairman of the Senate intelligence committee, said earlier today that he had seen a photo of a slain bin Laden, describing it in some detail without casting any doubt on its authenticity. But sure enough, he now admits he saw a fake.
"I was shown a picture -- it looked like a picture of bin Laden," Chambliss told TPM. "It appeared to be accurate but it was not."
Chambliss said the photo was electronic and someone -- not a senator or government official -- had shown it to him, but he declined to elaborate.
Jesus, Saxby Chambliss is on the Senate Intelligence Committee, you would think he could tell when he was looking at a fake. Guess not.
You know this means that many of YOU are far more intelligent than some of our Senators, since you were all telling each other both yesterday and today that those photos were fake.
Go ahead. Give yourselves those pats on the back. You deserve it.

And of course this is just another indication as to why it was a smart move for the White House to decide against releasing the REAL pictures of the dead Bin Laden. No telling what certain photoshop dabblers would have done with THOSE images.
A buddy of mine (we are both ex military) showed me a pic he got on his smart phone. He said, your observant. Who is this. I looked and said "I don't know. It's not OBL, because they shot him in the LEFT eye, and not the right. AND there's not enough damage from having just suffered a gun shot to the eyeball'. He said you are right. It is a fake photo.

That exact photo was published in the British newspaper The Daily Mail. Apparently I saw it before the senators. Asshats.

I understand that photo's been going around for years on the 'net. Anyway. It was easy to tell it was a fake because of the beard. The beard had been blurred and blended in to the background to make it look like it belonged, but whoever put it together did a shitty job on it.

2) I read on the internet that fake pictures of Bin Laden are being circulated and do not open them because viruses are attached with them. So I had no intentions of looking for or opening Bin Laden’s pictures.
I'm not a rocket scientist, but I am smart enough to know what's out there in cyberspace are fake pictures. I'm hoping our elected officials are not dumb enough to fall for fake pictures, but if they are dumb enough to believe my president... our president is not American, well I guess they will be anything.

Yes, fake pics are being circulated, but is the operation itself not also a fake? I've spoken to many fellow South Africans and the common reaction has been absolute surprise at the news of Osama's supposed death. As far as we knew Osama died ages ago.

Chambliss looked at a photo from some unvetted source. What kind of national security congressman is he anyway? I wouldn't trust him to hold my lunch money. For gosh sakes, had they not heard that the Pres was CONSIDERING the release of the photos. Don't ya think they would have been given a heads up of the decision and know that would happen before a photo would just be flying around on the internet? I wonder if they fact check every other detail regarding the decisions they make---NOT! That is one reason the repugs are so repulsive. ReplyDeleteNot trying to be gross, but if Bin Laden was shot in the head at fairly close range, with the type of weapon that is commonly used by the military, there wouldn't be much of his head left. That middle pic is of someone who suffered trauma from being too close to an explision.
