The Washington Post responds to my offer to help look through Palin's e-mails. Update!

I just now received this in my e-mail account.

Hello from the Washington Post newsroom,

We have had a strong response to our initial call-out on the Palin e-mails. And as a result, we've decided to ask you and everyone else who responded to our initial call-out to post comments, questions, and information related to the e-mails directly to comment threads on The Fix: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-fix

Starting this afternoon, we’ll be posting digital versions of the Palin emails here:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/palinemails

So, once they begin to appear, we invite you to:

1. Browse the emails.
2. Read what other users have posted about them in the comments of The Fix blog. Take note of what has already has been pointed out.
3. If you find something new, interesting, and noteworthy, post a comment on The Fix blog under the embedded documents. Include specifics in your comment: page numbers, direct excerpts, etc.
4. Discuss what others have found by replying to their comments.

Our producers and reporters will have an eye on the comment streams as they read and report the emails alongside you. We may contact you for further details, by way of your registered e-mail with The Post (not necessarily the address this e-mail is being sent to). If you would not like to be contacted using your registered e-mail address, please specify that with your comments.

Of course this is not news to all of us who were reading the Post yesterday, but I figured I would share with you their official response, which I am sure everybody who volunteered received as well.

So folks it looks like we have a busy day ahead of us, and in anticipation I have cleared my calendar, fired up my Mr. Coffee, and prepared to spend the day sorting through this massive, and way overdue, e-mail dump.

Personally I will be checking in with the Washington Post throughout the day as well as doing my own searches over at Crivella West, and putting together my own posts based on what I come up with.

Your help in the comments section is, of course, more than welcome.

If you DO find something blogworthy, PLEASE make sure to send the link.

Hmm, I wonder HOW Sarah Palin will be spending her day today?

Pouting?

Throwing cans at her  new Arizona refrigerator?

Getting ready to have a Facebook post written for her portraying her as the victim of her own e-mails?

Well though I may not know exactly what she will be doing, I am fairly certain what the expression on her face will be all day.

Oh yeah!  No doubt about it.

Update: While we are waiting here is a PDF, courtesy of MSNBC, of the documents that list all of the redacted emails and the reason they were redacted.

Update2: Here is the first of the e-mails that are NOT completely redacted in a Washington Post PDF. Currently they only go to February 20, 2007.

Todd Palin just called to warn me about Sarah's mood status and she is in a very bad mood today. So stay clear of her.

  7. She is running out of diversions, although she may have a big one lined up: the "demise" of Trig Palin. She will use it to explain her failed road trip and her bizarre behaviour. Grief. I would not put anything past her at this point. The obvious failure to even mention him is very troubling to us tinfoil hat wearers. She has to come up with something to counteract the e-mails. Nothing, and I mean nothing, is outside the realm of possibility.

...How over the top is this media frenzy about emails from the administration of a half-term governor of a state with three electoral votes who was a defeated candidate for vice president and who has not held any elective office for almost two years?

It’s mass media hysteria. I’ve seen nothing like it in regard to government documents since Daniel Ellsberg leaked the Pentagon Papers forty years ago.

And as The New York Times wrote at the time, the Pentagon Papers “demonstrated, among other things, that the Johnson Administration had systematically lied, not only to the public but also to Congress, about a subject of transcendent national interest and significance”: the Vietnam war.

Here’s the irony: the very same mainstream media whose paid pundits tell us over and over again how inconsequential Sarah Palin has become are treating the release of Palin administration emails as an event of transcendent national interest and significance.

The New York Times and Washington Post (see above) are asking members of the public to work without pay to help them sort through the emails, looking for nuggets of gold amid the dross.

MSNBC, Mother Jones and ProPublica have together hired technological experts to help them create a full database of the emails asap.

The ghost of Paul Revere set out on a midnight ride tonight to warn, “The emails are coming! The emails are coming!”

My question: given that almost everyone has agreed that Palin has become as irrelevant to our national discourse as a third tit on a mule, why–especially in this age of journalistic decimation–are so many major MSM outlets pouring so many resources down a dry hole?

The New York Times and Washington Post putting out help-wanted ads in order to attract volunteer labor to work on this story of transcendent national interest and significance?

Think about that for a moment: those twin pillars of MSM have never tried to shanghai crews of amateurs in advance to help them with any other story. But for the Palin emails it’s all hands to the pump.

    Why?

All the experts tell us Sarah will not run for president next year.

If she doesn’t, her political career ended on July 3, 2009, when she resigned as governor of Alaska.

Yet the political chattering class can chatter about little else but Sarah, Sarah, Sarah. They remain obsessed.

As I write in THE ROGUE:

Sarah Palin practices politics as lap dance, and we’re the suckers who pay the price. Members of our jaded national press corps eagerly stuff hundred dollar bills into her g-string, even as they wink at one another to show that they don’t take her seriously.

Anybody who thinks I exaggerate need only witness the spectacle about to unfold over the weekend.

  20. Yesterday someone posted an email about Erika using some Foundation's funds to get Bristol a trampoline at the Governor's Mansion.

Bristol was a teenaged child when she moved to Juneau. She had fun. She played basketball. The next year she was often sullen, out of school, calling herself a slut, probably pregnant. How very, very sad.

I know this sounds pessimistic but we know the lengths she goes to make herself appear perfect. They've had over two years to scour these emails. I think she probably has been assured she's going to come out alright in this.

The only think one can hope for is that something accidentally got through...or that Frank Bailey will come clean with any additional information he has to take her out of politics.

That's not to say that these emails won't be interesting, and of course I'll be pouring through them myself, but for as much comptempt as the MSM has for Sarah (and vice-versa), she also has them on a very tight leash and when she says 'heal!', they best comply. Truly a sad situation.

Now I am feeling I helped contribute to this disaster and couldn't be more sorry about how I cast my vote. We enabled her and caused this travesty of a loser to be unleashed on the world.

Transparent government... What a joke. The blank pages speak for themselves.

Who was in charge of doing the redacting, making the choices as to what was "sensitive"? Have they been in touch with Palin or any of her staff or 'bots? Is there a trail to follow there?

    ReplyDelete
  61. Anonymous10:25 AM

Just remember, a ton of redactions are just as important as the emails. They suggest things that they know will cause waves.

Also, Frank may never release his emails because they might implicate him in things he might face charges over. No one in their right mind releases emails that implicate them in a crime. Not even a Christian looking to do right. Probably why he's stonewalling on Trig - he knows that might be construed as fraud if some of the crazies decide they were duped and sue to get their donations back.

Just as I feared, like when Geraldo opened Al Capone's safe and found it empty. Still doesn't explain why it took so long if there was nothing there. Someone will need to step up and sue for the complete emails. Won't help immediately but if there's enough pressure put on them then Parnell will have to keep covering for Sara and use state funds to fight their release or give them up. At least you'll know if Sara is still running Alaska from the sidelines. And who knows, maybe Parnell is hip deep in the muck and he's covering his and several others asses. Fuck Andrea Mitchell. She is MSNBC's version of Greta Van Susteren. She is repeating a right-wing talking point. She is a just another right-wing Palin apologist.

"Everybody should read $arah Palin's e-mails, and everything will be fixed, and her poll numbers will go through the roof!" What garbage.

I don't know how many times I have heard some idiot on cable news say that something was going to work to Palin's benefit, then didn't.

Examples: The Fox News gig, the book and book tour, the Tea Party convention speech, the foreign trips, and speeches, the T.V. show, the recent media-whore bus tour... None if it helped her. She got more unpopular.

Most voters don't give a crap about these e-mails, and won't read them. $arah Palin is still an unqualified, right-wing extremist, divisive, quitter!

Sounds like they are seeing signs she had her eye on the VP slot long before the supposed McCain "maverick move" selection. They are saying she met with Cheney about the/a pipeline in '07. They are saying at the time of the VP selection there isn't much to indicate she was too concerned about vacating her governorship in AK (AK's welfare, in other words).

If they can establish that she was identified for the short list long before they pretended she was with that bs story about the kid with his "draft Palin" website, it will be significant. I am sure Big Oil and the GOP picked her long before, but they knew her professional and personal life could not withstand scrutiny beyond a few months' duration.

And they were right about that.

If Parnell were smart, he'd be careful with what he redacted. If anyone pursues this through the courts, he could end up guilty of conspiracy after the fact. Although, since he was probably in on all her illegal activities in the first place, he probably has a double reason to redact--for his own sake as well as hers.

    Meg,

Shoot. I made the mistake of looking at the ADN blog to find out about todays "Sarah Palin the Blogger" issue......I knew I shouldn't have looked through it!

The first entry I looked at was a slam of you or your answer to the blog issue. The rant sounded familiar - like someone we know. It was ridiculous and offensive.

The other entry I looked at was a question of my ethics...it said I was trying to get my "Dad's best friend the deputy job at F & G". (Obviously referring to the Mat-su guy, Corey Rossi, whom a lot of game guys were lobbying for - my dad passed on a few comments from guys he was hearing from that were favorable to Corey.) I just called my dad, he confirmed that 1). Corey Rossi is not his best friend 2).he's not lobbying for anything for Corey, he was passing on comments from Alaskans who wanted to make sure I heard their input 3). he would never try to sway me to hire anyone 4).he knows I'm not micromanaging Denby and the choice of Denby's teammembers is is in Denby's hands.

It was another offensive blog entry.

And it sure leaves me puzzled as to the rumors that are able to spread like wildfire. Kind of makes my stomach turn over.

Looking at that blog was also my reminder to NOT waste my time and energy peeking at it to find out what's on readers' minds.

Tibbles - where is Denby on putting together his F & G team? Until he gets his deputy(ies) in there, we'll keep hearing controversy re: who's doing what.

    ____

That email is at the New York Times database on page four of February 12, 2007 emails.

Geesh, the media frenzy is ridiculous and they will never learn. It's sickening!

Cue the Accusations of The Media’s KKK Style Lynching of Sarah Palin

The Emails Are Coming, the Emails Are Coming! Palinistas are so upset over the Palin email dump that they’re calling it a “KKK lynching” and whining about why no one is doing this to Obama. They follow this up with the petulant insistence that her emails are none of our business.

Here is Glenn Beck today via Media Matters comparing the media coverage of the Palin emails to a KKK lynch mob:

Glenn Beck ironically lectured his audience first on how liars and people make things up destroy themselves, he moved on to defending Sarah Palin, “This thing that’s happening with The New York Times and Sarah Palin, I’ve never seen anything like it. Have you? Where they take the emails, and now they’re asking readers to though and find things on her.”

After getting sidetracked with some race baiting, Beck resumed his defense of Palin and compared the media to the KKK, “Why is it that they are so against Sarah Palin? You may not agree with her policies or you know may not want her to be President of the United States, but do you have to ask yourself have you ever seen such a lynch mob that wasn’t wearing a hood, ever? Have you seen one? I’ve never seen such a lynch mob. You might as well just put hoods on every member of the press, and it’s not about the content of character or the color of the skin. It’s about can they move people in a sense of freedom and independent spirit.

Let’s get these objections out of the way so we can carry on with the day. I’m glad the right is bringing up the KKK and lynching. It’s so nice when they admit to their own behaviors via projection (Kenyan no birth certificate not America etc). No one is reading President Obama’s emails because for many reasons, Presidents’ emails are not available until after they have left office and are then presented in the national archives (unless you are George W Bush whose team destroyed emails, computers, and used non-government servers).

One who is even remotely serious about politics will understand the necessity for secrecy around a President’s emails until he has left office. But then, Palin fans are more Twilight-esque with a twist of violent, demented fan rage most akin to “leave Britney alone!’ wails followed by violent threats backed up by various psalms that prove she is being persecuted by us because we hate the “message of Christ”. I kid you not. I know Christ was all for lying to the people in his name, they just left that part out of the bible. If you don’t believe me, check his Wiki page which has been conveniently updated by rabid Palin fans to revise the bible and Christ himself to fit in with their leader’s notions of how he rang that bell of secrecy to warn the anti-Christ.

As for the claim that her emails are none of our business, these emails were requested two and a half years ago when she was running for Vice President. She ran for office as Governor under the mantle of “open and transparent” government but then used Yahoo accounts to conduct government business off of the government servers to get around the state’s public records law. Her emails were our business two and a half years ago as she told us she was ready to lead this country. It’s not our fault that she delayed this process for over two and a half years.

The fact that the e-mails are so heavily redacted means that she had A LOT to hide. These are GOVERNMENT e-mails. They said they redacted things that were personal. What was so personal in a GOVERNMENT e-mail that resulted in a blank page?

This whole thing is a farce. The fact that they had three years to redact and that her attorneys were able to review them says plenty. My only hope is that since Sarah is so secretive, she left out information that the attorneys would never look for and that we know will be a smoking gun that will get her into big trouble. Like what happened around the time of babygate. No way did that lazy ass look through the e-mails herself.

Did Bill come out commenting about how much information was actually withheld and what it was since he has the actual e-mails.

The Palins were lambasted during the 2008 campaign for spending big Republican Party money on clothes and other items for their family. But the family was tapping into the party long before she was asked to be on the ticket. On April 15, 2008, Todd Palin emailed an official at the Republican Governors Association, with a request:

Christi, any chance we can hook up with Dallas Mavericks' bball tickets for their game here tomorrow night? Just checking... Thanks! Todd Palin, Alaska

    Ghost-writing letter to editor

From Kyle Hopkins in Anchroage, 11:35 a.m. --

In another example Palin’s effort to counter-punch criticism in the media, she ghost-wrote a letter to the editor – quoting herself – that would reply to a complaint that Palin had failed to appear at the 2008 Miss Alaska pageant.

In the July 26th, 2008 note to Frank Bailey, Kris Perry and Rosanne Hughes, Palin drafted a letter to the paper and asks her aides to find someone to send it to the Daily News under his or her name:

    Palin writes:

“I’m looking for someone to correct the letter writer’s goofy comments, but don’t want the letter to ADN in response to come from me.”

Palin then provides her aides a draft of the letter:

“Dear Editor: To address Judi Spry’s Anchorage Daily News letter-to the editor on July 26 asking where the governor was during this year’s Miss Alaska Pageant:
First, when I asked Gov. Palin if she was ever Miss Alaska (as Ms. Spry stated), our Governor replied, “Nope, a mere “Miss Congeniality”, one of the runner-up sashes, and much-needed college scholarships were my wins as a participant in that scholarship program, about 100 years ago it seems now.’”

Palin tells her staff she wants the letter to argue that she didn’t blow off the pageant because of a “lack of support” for the event, but in order to keep a commitment to travel to Fairbanks to meet with U.S. Congressmen who were touring ANWR.

Palin aide Ivy Fry replied to the e-mail later that day, suggesting Palin friend Kristan Cole could send the letter.

“Kristan Cole would be perfect as she knows the pageant world but also she knows how busy you and Todd are. I’ll touch base w her today, and Frank too to make sure we’re sending variations and not duplicates of this letter,” Fry wrote.

“Also, we’re rallying the troops re: letters for dps and agia. Phil Schneider’s should run this wkend,” Fry added.

Re the email of Tuesday, August 05, 2008 12:40 AM
"WOW! why would she need to check trig's birth for INaccuracies? this is pretty damning evidence right here."

Because there were people in that office who knew Trig had been born earlier, and also some who were not in the loop and still believed the "April 18th" lie. Palin was obviously nervous that Trig's real birthdate would go out by mistake.

Sometimes what's not there is just as revealing as what is there:

Go to the page showing the redactions, both partial and all withheld--http://msnbcmedia.msn.com/i/msnbc/Sections/NEWS/palin_withheld_emails.pdf

Now, scan through them. You'll notice that emails to and from Sarah have lots of people listed as both cc'ed and in the "to" column. HOWEVER, on Jan 23-25, 2008 (see for example pages 140, 136, 146, 144--they're all muddled up) there are dozens and dozens of emails only between Sarah and Parnell, or from Sarah to Parnell, Kristina Perry, Frank Bailey, and Ivy Frye, with occasional additions of Sharon Leigh and Tom Irwin.

This is so different from her administration's usual pattern of cc'ing everyone, that it stands out like a sore thumb. The usual reason given for the redaction? "Privacy."

So SOMETHING happened around January 23-26, and we now have the names of the people "in the know."

Why did Ms. Henry quit, resign or was fired 2 months after being appointed by Talis Colberg when she suggested changes that needed to be made?

Something stinks in Denmark. This is a woman who was highly spoken of for defending victims of crimes and even had a monument in her honor for it.

what the hell happened that involved Wayne Anthony Ross (WAR), Palin and her AG and this woman? And then Palin attempts to reward WAR latter with an appointment?

"I am pleased that Ms. Henry agreed to serve the Department of Law in this new capacity," said Colberg. "Prosecuting criminal offenders is one of the principal responsibilities for the department. I'm amazed to read the wonks saying that this kind of release of info on a politician has never happened before.

    Really??

If the wonks had half a brain and used it instead of sniffing panties, they would know that it is not uncommon that every candidate when running for President has FOIA requests for their emails to be reviewed and if something is wrong, to be brought to the attention of the public.

The only difference in this case is the fuckers in the government in AK took friggin' 3 years to release them and it was within Palin's first speech upon McCain picking her for VP that we knew she was lying. That she continues to keep herself on the national stage of course makes this a bigger issue as everyone is curious now.

So Palin wonks -- it's the weekend -- go suck it somewhere else as we know who you are.

Afraid or jealous of Palin -- you need to find some new terms in that it never has been or will be that. Never have I been afraid of a media slut. There's an exchange between a former Governor's Mansion House Manager, a Sharon Lane (worked from '87-'90 assisting Michael Cowper, First Lady) and Erika Fagerstrom (Palin's Executive House Manager) about the fact that Todd hosted a luncheon honoring past House Managers on August 2, 2008 - and Ms. Lane was not publicly recognized at the luncheon when others were, apparently?

She writes to ask why this happened, and the response is cagey if nothing else. So funny to see this Palin staff person dance around it, not actually apologizing but expressing regret that the woman felt disappointed. Just kinda wonder if it was an honest oversight or some weird dis/punishment by the Palins.

Cowper was a Democrat, but that probably has nothing to do with it. Minor incident, of course. The fact Todd was in on it rings bells for me though.

Palin's Pop Quiz: What's the biggest private employer in Alaska?

"Safe to say [t]hat fisheries are our largest private-sector employer in the state? (Tourism is second?)" Palin queried staffers and her husband in January 2008.

"I'm sure it's correct but want verification," she added in a later email. Staffer Frank Bailey suggested that it might be construction. "Considering the caneries I believe it's fish," Palin replied.

According to the Alaska Department of Labor, fewer than 10,000 people were in "seafood processing" in April 2011, while nearly twice as many worked in construction. (That figure presumably doesn't include the fishermen and women themselves, or cable staffers who ride along.) Meanwhile, 30,400 worked in "leisure and hospitality." That's more than twice as many as oil and gas.

The fact they continue to suck off of Palin's teet means there is going to be a friggin' major storm in the next election and Parnell ain't safe. He best move to fucking AZ with Palin to get his teet fix.

Sarah Palin, Todd and her lawyers and minions had over 2 years to redact what they wanted as she still has her devoted bots working in Alaska govt.

Critics writing to her had their names, addresses and phone numbers left in the e-mail dump. Now these people have cross-hairs on them by Sarah and the bots will probably go after them. See article on Politicususa.

Sarah and Todd Palin are evil people and they should be in jail.

Palin's hostility toward the use of teleprompters didn't fit within her world back in 2007. When Calgary's "Energy TV" called up looking to interview Palin, Palin communications aide Meg Stapleton wrote to staff:

Energy TV would like an interview with the Governor and I thought this Wednesday might work - the questions are below . What we need to do is simply book the Governor's time, provide the answers to the questions below, use the prompter and have her look to the side and answer the questions for use by the TV station. I just need help on the answers . It needs to be very conversationally written . Needs to be on 3:30pm Governor's feed Wednesday - could record according to Governor 's schedule on Wednesday morning and would need answers by tomorrow. Possible?

Palin recalled that she had a "long cabinet meeting" scheduled for the same time they had allotted to shoot her side of the interview. Stapleton replied:

We're working around that. Joe Balash is crafting the answers right now , Sharon will ask the questions, we will have the answers in a teleprompter, and then send those answers over the satellite tomorrow afternoon . It shouldn't take long , once we have the answers. Expect them tonight.

Panicked Email Over An Apparent Computer Search

On Aug. 19, 2008, in the midst of Troopergate, Palin sent a distressed email to staffers, apparently under the belief that her computer at the governor's mansion had been searched by authorities, writing: "who, when, etc conducted this search of my bedroom's computer and the other house computer? And what were the reasons given and responses given to whomever must have officially entered the residence on whatever day it was that this occurred?" Palin's scheduler, Janice Mason, checked into the search and discovered that the governor's office itself had copied all staff computer hard drives at the request of the state Department of Law.

The news didn’t please the governor. "it's not comforting at all knowing this took place with no one present…. Who are 'they'? Who went to the bedroom, where else did they go?"

But we'll have to find a legitimate Piper /willow reason to travel Friday night - Sunday

Can a timeline of all of her activities be established in the 24K emails doing the period of gestation that can answer the following questions?

Did she ever allude to a Dr's appointment?

Was she watching what she consumed as a mother?

Did she ever call in sick with morning sickness?

Did she ever share the joy of pregnancy with anyone?

I have a feeling the divorce is not just a rumor. Why is it so hard to find out the truth about this. Someone needs to ask Sarah directly "ARE YOU DIVORCED?" or "DO YOU HAVE A DIVORCE SETTLEMENT?" She might try her "Divorce, have you seen TAAAWD?"
but maybe we could see her facial expression. It just seems that if she does run for president as a Republican nominee and lies about this, that is a very serious offense, isn't it? Although no one will catch her at it. She lies about everything and has never been held accountable, even doing many illegal things.

In Dunn's book, he points out all of the outright lies Sarah has made on things she has been found guilty of. How do her fans keep justify this? Are they simply afraid to admit they were wrong? Pretty weak excuse.

I'd like to ask a Palinbot how they would feel if they found out that Sarah had been divorced for months but was pretending she wasn't. Would they care? It is the divorce, it is the LYING. She is a sick sick pathological liar. It isn't funny and this kind of thing can truly screw up a kid. Her kids are going to have serious issues, they already do.

Btw, that wedding was referenced in the 09 emails."

So, Bristol went to a wedding in Nov. 2007. Is that the best you got? Nobody said Bri$tol disappeared off the face of the planet in 2007,

She was probably pregnant at the wedding. Got any pictures to prove otherwise? There. Pregnancy "rumors" not solved.

From Gawker re the emails, spotlighting an email from Elan Frank, the Israeli filmmaker:

"I love her and what she stands for and want to make sure she is shown only In the most positive way."

Elan Frank, an Israeli filmmaker, met Palin randomly long before her ascension to the national stage and spent time filming her. When she was named John McCain's vice presidential nominee, he contacted Palin's spokeswoman to offer congratulations and pledge fealty: "Let me know if I can be of any help with the footage I have. The footage I have and my approach present the governor in a bright and positive light, and can be very helpful. You can direct news agency's to me, I will make sure they get only the very good stuff." Guess who eventually purchased Frank's footage for a documentary about Palin, and hired him as a consultant? FOX NEWS, DUMMY [pdf].
